From a soon-to-be physical therapist (or physiotherapist), I appreciate you taking the time to give me insight into how you transfer. I know my patients in the future will appreciate it! Hope all is well!
Thanks Levi!
Im a C5 quad and have been trying transfers unsuccessfully for the last 2 years. I keep falling to the front or back as my trunk balance sucks. Your videos are great and I hope to transfer independently one day.
Man, I feel like this was forever ago! But I'm grateful for all the comments and views. I hope it's helped people out and i know that I've made some amazing connections and met some truly inspirational people. 84,000+! Woot! Thank you.

Man you’re killing it. Great work. T-8 complete sending love from Cali 💙🌴
Hi! Not trying to be rude or something but I am just learning about these things to become a physiotherapist once. If quadriplegia means that all four limbs are affected how can you perfectly move your arms? Thank you for your answer.
@@skoklarisa9596 you’re not being rude at all. You actually answered your own question. Quadriplegia means that all four limbs are “affected”. I am not able to use my triceps, forearms, or hands. So I have limited limb function but because the limb is still affected I’m still a quadriplegic. A paraplegic has full use of their upper limbs. Hope that helps.
@@luisguillermo ohh thanks for your answer. I thought that quadriplegia meant that all four limbs are completely without sensibility and motor function. I understand now. Thanks!
Great video. Very educational. I really like how you kept explaining balance and the danger of falling forward. We have all fallen and it's not fun getting back up. Thank you again for the video.
Brother, this is a great video. Thank you for sharing all the wisdom and encouragement. I have been a physical therapist for 20 years with the last eight years only treating spinal cord and traumatic brain injury and I don’t think I’ve seen a better video on transfers. I can count the number of UA-cam channels I have subscribed to on one hand and yours is definitely subscribe to. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to seeing more videos from you.
this video will give a lift of spirit to those who suffered the same. keep it up stray strong bro!
Great video! I am getting ready to take my Physical Therapy Boards exam to get licensed and this helped a bunch with my studies. Thank you!
Thank you soo much for this video. I am currently on 2nd year Physical Therapy student and we are learning how to teach patients with SCI how to transfer. Your explanations are super helpful in helping me learn how to teach patients. Thanks for your videos!
This was really informative. I'm an OT student, and this vid helped me understand better ability at C5-C6 level. Thanks!
Exactly. Show this to your patients. No excuses...😎💪
Awesome... c4 c5 here.. was in the back seat of my car while my friend drove and after she ran a red light I woke up in the hospital quadriplegic. Don’t know how you do it, good for you for having strength. I barely get by every day
Hi Lou.... that is absolutely amazing... I love that you are so positive and you are an inspiration to all those in a similar situation. I have a friend who is also a c5-c6 and it is now 9 months since his accident. Transfers have been difficult for him but there are coming along and I will send him your link which I am sure will help him. Many thanks and I wish you all the very best. Take good care and keep on posting... you are the best!
Awesome stuff! Really useful video for me as an occupational therapy student. All the best!
Awesome video.. you are a bright light.
you really are an inspiration to other quads c5/.6 but i have never been able to transfer that well my legs and gut go so hard in spasms they fight against me throwing me bk.chair/car ok with board. please be careful with bottom as easy to mark and problems later in life so take care now, hope still doing great 3yrs,on
im glad it helped. yeah its pretty much all shoulders and technique. twisting at the wrist and pushing the elbow in towards the body. its kind of hard to explain, takes repetition. it really helped me knowing someone had done it before me.
such a great educational video on transfers and bed mobility. Thank you for sharing.
Hey Handsome, thank you so much for your demonstration. You are a gem!
Thank you for sharing the video...I am PT student and this helps me gain tips on how to teach my patients on doing transfers and bed mobility...wish you luck..
Love everything about this video! I found it extremely helpful for exploring strategies for folks with SCI at your level as I sit here and study for my NBCOT exam! You are inspirational and adorable at that! Keep doing your thing!!!!
Thanks! Always glad to hear that these videos are helpful. Good luck on your exam.
Thank you. I am an adaptive yoga teacher trying to help a private client with transfers. Your video is very useful.
I'm a c 5-6 quad for 40 years, hurt at age 17 now almost 57, , you machanicaly lock elbows and transfer board is safest, stay strong and limber
Great transfers!!! an love that you are thinking safety first!
I had to adapt to longer arms. A perfect vid four your size.beenthgere done that a bit impro/1991. improve of transfer and lock elbow is a must.
glad to give or get new info for c5-c6 incomplete.
That is a terrific video - thank you for giving some good tips. I loved it when the screensaver kicked in :-) You are a quality guy.
awesome video.. you are one brave Lion
Way to go young man!!!
yes i agree. i started working out and its made a huge difference.
Really enjoyed your video! Really helpful and I liked all your tips!
Hi! I’m in PTA school, and this helped me a lot to learn! Thankyou so much for demonstrating, u r amazing 👍🏼👍🏼
Glad it helped :)
Great man. never give up!
Great job Lil Bro ~ Keep up the gd work
Cool video. You seem to have a really cool personality and confidence.
nice work Lou, keep up the great work.
You explain this very well..thanks!
Broo- I am a second year Doctor of Physical Therapy student. I stumbled across this video randomly. Great stuff! Thank you for sharing and best of luck in all your endeavors!
Thank you!
yo man good video i'm a c5-6 quad ,muscle spasms and all.i tried your way of transferring and it was so much simpler.I just moved 2 my new apartment from a nursing home so i'm having 2 learn all kind of new stuff . Life as a quad has it's challenges and is not recommended 4 the weak at heart..Thank u...
Nice work and I'm proud of how you made the transfers with your own twist. Good carry over! I bet your P.T. is still proud of you!
Thank you and I hope so. They definitely made a difference here.
I really really hope you see how AMAZING and VALUED your hard work and willingness to share is. This was incredibly helpful for me as I recently graduated OT school but my friend had a really bad spinal cord injury and I'm trying to help teach how to use the sliding board but I still have a hard time wrapping my head around how to extend your arm with no triceps, are you just using your shoulders and then locking for everything? You make it look so easy! You are inspirational, own it. :)
I used to do side to side by holding the push handles with my wrists until i learned to get up from leaning forward but once I got the j3 cushion and testing it out I no longer do weightshifts as long as I move a bit here and there. Its a great cushion but make sure you constantly check for sores when testing new cushions.
Great strategy, Mr. Guille! I do some of your strategies too.
great transfer skills! I still use a sliding board. The hardest part is getting my legs onto the bed. I'll check out the sleep number bed. Still very much used to hospital beds and dependent on rails and a trapeeze. Thanks for the video!
Lou ur adorable! Im a c5 c6, 15 yr post injury & have never been able to figure out a self transfer. Could be my ever growing booty..haha. Anyway, just wanted to say u rock babe, keep up all the good help ur spreading! ;-)
That's was great! Thank you!
Wow! You make it look so easy .
It definitely gets easier with practice. 💪🏽
great job man I wish I could do it
Lou your awsome...Carter from Ottawa Canada
Good videos should be shared, looking real good! Keep going :)
Holaaa brooo me alegra que este mejorando lo admiro ! ... Saludos desde Colombia xD
haha yeah, i'm finally out of mine! :) got out of it like two weeks ago, & tomorrow i go to indianapolis for a meeting with a therapy place for intense rehab since the brace limited me so much.. but i'm really excited to be independent finally so i can feel normal again! i got stem cells like 3 weeks ago in mexico though.. and they said to do lots of therapy because it should help stimulate them, so i'll see how they work.. it can take 2 to 3 months for changes to happen
Amazing! ✨😊🦋
Great explanation
school. but not only is the sleepnumber an awesome air matress it also has a tilting frame. I didnt get it since its an extra 1000 but its ends uplooking like a queensize hospital bed you might really like it.
Your vids are great they're helping me with a lot of stuff. I can transfer with a slide board but I have to have help with my legs because I'm 6'4" and they're pretty long lol but you should really make a dressing vid its my next goal. I'm almost completely independent with it but I could really use some pointers. THANK YOU
Awesome video, thank you for educating us Luis! I am about to take my OT board exam and this was helpful since I am a visual learner.
Good luck!
@@luisguillermo Thank you, I appreciate it!
Great job man you rocked it. I'm aiming to develop a method of assisting people with c5/6 injuries who aren't as mobile as yourself get into bed. Something hopefully which can offer more assistance than a transfer board. If yourself or any others reading this can think of anything which you would like to see included in the design which could make the transfer easier I would love to know! Keep up the good work dude!
well working out and pushing could help with that. Also, if you get a sleepnumber bed you can make it firm for the transfer and soft once youre on it. It helps a lot when youre just learning.
I helped out a friend before in and out of the bathtub. It was a great experience. Could I suggest that you work your upper body so lifting is a lot easier. My friend says it is a must to be in shape.
@jmccaf pushing my wheelchair is the biggest one, then doing the transfers themselves because technique and balance are more important than strength at first. Every now and then i use wrist weights and bands. if you get sore just stretch and get a massage.
Thans bro! Maybe you don't know but you helped me for my exam. I'm a student of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation :)
Glad I could help!
awesome video!
Thank you!
Very nice
Goooood job!!!
I'm gonna start trying again. I've been in a chair for like 7 years, I'm also a C5. I tried for sooo long to transfer, but couldn't, and no-one could really show me. I also have INSANE spasms, which doesn't help. You look really independent, which I'm the complete opposite, and its really embarrassing and degrading. I'm going to try this technique tonight, and I'm gonna keep trying til injuries or success happens! Hopefully the latter....THANK YOU!!
Funny thing is i was going to switch to the roho. I use the j2 cushion which out of all seats i tried at first was by far the most safe. its big and sturdy so you can push off it really well. i chose it to learn how to transfer with. It also works great with pressure relief.. almost too good i never do pressure relieves.. i know i should but as long as you dont sit in one spot all day you shouldt have to worry with the j2. i want to switch to the roho because its smaller but it doesnt matter.
its a bed with an air matress that you can make soft or firm depending on whether youre sleeping or doing a transfer.
Great you have taken the time out to show and make people aware of such techniques. Have you suffered any pressure sores (ulcers) from this technique like if you catch the wheel? Also, have you developed tenodesis grip from how you picked up the phone?
You are very cute :) lol im a paraplegic but I still have a while until I'm healed I have to wear a big turtle shell brace as some ppl call it, but I can still do transfers, you make this look pretty easy, good to see u have such a good attitude being a quad:)
I love you from Japan
good job.
thx man, that means a lot.
very impressive.
@kellyje03 i use gloves that have both.. these are rubber but i have dycem ones that i feel work the same.
@johnnycupakes I self cath, it fits my active lifestyle the best. Theres many ways to do it, all good, just have to find the right one for you. It took months of discipline to train my bladder... cant get anywhere without putting in the effort.Went from 4 hours to 5 and so on now I can push 8+. Its more complicated than that... ill make a video and blog post this week, k?
Hi. I am in physical therapy school amd just wanted yo let you know my professor is really impressed with your video. He made us practice how you did your transfer. I am starting my clinical roation in 4 weeks and am going to a SCI speciality clinic and was just wondering what your therapist did that really helped you or anything they didn't do that you wish they did? Any tips or advice would be much appreciated. I am a little nervous lol. Thanks!
You have such a beautiful smile just a compliment and sure hope you keep an eye on your mental health ever need an ear il listen ❤
i salute you! you are very strong huh...NICE!
very nice job… I'm complete C6 since 2002, and these transfers are still difficult. But I'm surely a lot heavyer than you, my legs for example, look like they were before my accident…Your wheelchair seems to be a little wide for you, but also it gives you more room for your hands on the sides too…it may help…
I am c-5, c-6. I've been around similar quads who show tension in their legs and abdomen, but do not possess the initiative for independence. My problem is, my abdomen doesn't restrict my guts in one place. So hooking my legs with my arm, well basically my loose, fat gut inhibits me from moving my legs efficiently, or really at all. My question is, does anyone here have a similar problem and/or any suggestions.
Excellent video by the way, it has helped many friends of mine.
Man thanks i never learned how to do tht
actually i just saw the video and i do it subtlety here and there for cntrol. hope that helps.
@tetrakite good observation haha my chair is a bit big but my insurance wouldnt change it. no big, it gets the job done. legs suck ma mine are heavy too it might not look it but im tall.. thats a queen right there.
merci beaucoup
Nice video man, im a c5/c6 im not sure at all maybe c4 lol i have a lot of questions and i think you can help me if u have time we can get on some chat ill apreciated.
Cool vid man, I'm a c6/7 Asia B. where'd you get those gloves? I have regular gloves that are a b*tch to get on/off. You're doing great with no triceps
yea, i just kept tweeking the angle of the chair, that helps.
thanks.
@nomaileric haha actually my spasms were so bad that i couldnt even feed myself but imade the decision to get the baclofen pump, since oral medicine wasnt working, put in me so that i could do everyday activities and live on my own.
Hi,
you mention a importance of working out. Can you show some exercises you do and the time you spent on strengthening your muscle.
I am looking for some good quad workout.
Thank you
c5 complete
hey man good job, im c6 quad too, how do you manage your bladder care if you dont mind me asking!
Great vid, I'm a c5/c6 myself. How long have you injured? Does your cuffs have dycem or rubber on them?
Hey man alll the best to you always. I had a spinal cord disease. Let me know if ee can talk.one of my rwally good friends plays wheel chair rugby.
@MrGuille1122 Where'd you get them from, if you don't mind me asking?
Nice Vid Man. I made one too, i'm also c5
hey bro, thats awesome, im a incomplete c4 c5 , and 3 lumbar, ive tried and tried im tall and about 200lbs. the bad thing is i have terrable leg spasms. nothing stops my spasms except for marijuana, anyway, kudos man,
kudos
hm... ill get on the video but since i use a gym set up it might be hard to duplicate. As a c5 thought you can use bands and handweights. Make sure to change up your workouts though doing the same thing repeatedly wont help. Ill try to put something together though.
im an incomplete, i havet gotten any mobility back but i do have quite a bit of feeling below my injury lvl.
Hey Lou, I have a question...Im a c5-c6 quad also and i was wondering how you manage pressure reliefs in your manual wheelchair? Im trying to get into mine more to get stronger but I cant figure out an adequate way to do one by myself.... Lemme know.....btw ur video helped me alot too Thanks
Rapid, Im c5/6 since 2003 had some things get in the way of strength training but am on it this year. What exercises do you find most effective to help with transferring?
i hv c5c6 disc extrusion..a fragment has fallen into spinal canal..doctors said it wont mattter much..i think he is afraid of surgery..I hv full strength in my body except in night when i sleep i feel a bit weakness in legs and hands...plz tell me ur experince of how it started and when the real attach came when u got paralysed...didnt u had any surgery?..plz reply
