    These are my tips for eating in a restaurant with kids or a baby in Japan. If you’re travelling to Japan with kids, especially a baby, dining out could be a little bit intimidating when you don’t know what to expect. To be completely honest, it’s still tricky for us too, even though I’ve lived in Japan for many years since it’s different from restaurant to restaurant. Today, I’ll share with you what I’ve learned during this last year and half with my son. I’m sure some of the tips I mention are common knowledge worldwide but since I’m not familiar with the standard in other countries, I’ll simply share the specifics about Japan and you can let me know how it compares to your country. Today, we’re doing this video at a Japanese family restaurant which is reasonably kids-friendly but these tips will apply to most Japanese restaurants.

      This is why I'm happy to live in a less urban area in Japan. Where I live at least (Mie Prefecture) we can pretty much bring kids anywhere without trouble. Wide sidewalks, kid-friendly restrooms, stroller/wheelchair ramps almost everywhere... It just seems like raising kids is way easier outside of the big cities.

    I went to a restaurant with friends and I really wanted omlet rice and fried chicken with my beer. They didn't have it on the adult menu but it was on the kids menu. Everyone stared at me and the waiter giggled at my order. I don't get why that is such a big deal. Why can't an adult eat off the kids menu particularly when they don't have the same items? It was actually better bc the sizing was perfect so that I didn't eat too much....

    Thank you for sharing. We brought our 18 month old to Japan from Canada and visited Kansai, Kanazawa, and Tokyo within 12 days in 2019 to see the cherry blossom. It was hectic in terms of the time difference, but all the restaurants were really nice and let us brought him in (even the small boutique ones in Kyoto). I really hope I can bring my kids to Japan again when the right time comes! A memorable experience was going to the Ritz Tokyo for afternoon tea and they prepared kids toys for him, and the ryokan experience (the kids meal was better than ours lol). We find the best options for restaurants were the ones that are located in the department stores or the ones that have private dinning rooms.

      Are your child tempered? We are going to Japan in just 2 weeks with 2 toddlers. Older one is very free spirited and loves to play and have fun.
      Seeing Japanese society is so quiet and reserved I'm quite worried of having trouble with her esp in restaurants - in southern europe we could get away with anything - running around barefoot, breaking stuff, chatting with other people, etc...

    • @blueluna86
      @blueluna86 Рік тому

      @@dzhiurgis my eldest boy is well tempered and my 2nd boy is quite active this time around when we went to Japan (last month). But he sat still during our meals in Japan (we try to entertain him with toys) while we eat. If your daughter likes to move around, I would suggest going to malls that have food courts or restaurants that are more spacious. Most of the chain stores have kids meal and may come with a toy so hopefully she will enjoy that. But like you mentioned, Japanese have somewhat lower tolerance of kids running around/being loud so we tried to be mindful of that. Good luck!

      At home, there are all the toys he wants, he doesn't need a screen. But *when you're on the go,* in public transport, carrying the baby bag, stroller, and the baby, *it's hard to carry toys for them to play.* And you probably have to carry at least 3 toys, in case he doesn't wanna play with the others.
      He also didn't spend all the time with the phone. You can see him playing with a bus toy.
      And in the video, you see only Wolfy eating, so the table is pretty empty. If the whole family eats, there wouldn't be space for toys on the table.

      The footage you’re seeing is only a short moment. Don’t judge people on that.

      Agree, this just creates a dependency on electronic devices as they get older. Kids never had this 20 years ago, it’s unnecessary.

    In Japan, definitely use a harness carrier or wrap instead of a stroller! It's 9999x more convenient!

    Im not sure if you have done it yet but can you go down one of them narrow alleyways with the restaurants in the walls. Often only sit 3 to 4 people. Iv always been fascinated by them. Also biking in japan would be a cool thing to learn about.

    Back in 2020, actor Ashton Kutcher petitioned for diaper changing stations in men’s restrooms. That would nice for fathers to have a place to change his baby.
