This video made me feel better about clipping their nails. I also get very nervous and usually have to cut my guinea pigs nails on different days because it stresses me out too much. Also, one of them has the black paw. So scary! I find if I usually give my guinea pigs large pieces of lettuce to eat it helps them stay in one place longer vs giving them smaller sized snacks. I also use a pillow and kind of gently sandwich them in it. Then you can sort of isolate the paw that you need to clip.
Honestly, I found that human toe nail clippers work the best. Wrap them up in a towel and their feet are easier to get to and they feel secure. Love your videos!
I caught my piggies skin once cutting his nails, i felt dreadful, i left it as long as i could, till he had claws like freddy krueger. He forgave me bless him.
My Gatsby is always calm and really enjoys being held, so he's super easy. However, Gilbert is a demon. He never likes being held and freaks out about everything despite him being tamed first. Your guinea pigs are SO CALM
You did so well! Your piggies are so calm compared to mine. I feel like ours are more anxious and jumpy because I'm very anxious about it too, and they sense it. I can't do them alone, always need someone to hold them while I trim, otherwise they squirm around too much!

Black nails are terrible! Thanks for the tip with the flashlight. My piggies each get a baby carrot stick on nail trimming day. It helps keep thier teeth busy long enough for me to get the clippers situated just right. The inner front toes are always the most difficult.

The nail clippers you were using - are they easier than regular nail clippers, and how do you know you are not cutting too short? I also have a hard time doing my piggie's nails. I am concerned about cutting them too short.
Ah the struggle for all guinea pig owners :'D You did well! Just clipped my piggies nails yesterday. I start with one with white/brown nails, remember how much I cut and repeat that length with my dark brown one xD Always proud that I can manage it on my own. They go through lots of lettuce in the process (and some peaflakes).
I hate cutting mine too but I've heard of using a Dremel with the sanding tool to use instead (have yet to try) and also if you give them treats while doing it they will stay better still!

Plus my little guys throw their heads back and headbutt and for some reason I can't get used to that, it scares me so bad I'm afraid I'll drop them (I almost do every time). Unfortunately, I had a pretty bad cut to one of my pigs nails because she jerked away right when I was cutting (thank goodness I had the styptic powder on hand to dip the nail into, but it was bleeding everywhere), so now I take them to the vets office for their trim. I just can't go through that again....
This happened to me recently! I looked like an extra in a bloody movie scene. Had blood all over my hands and shoulders and arms... My guinnea pig didnt seem to even notice he was bleeding... Took alot of corn starch, toilet paper and 2 bandaids for it to finally stop bleeding..ugh
Hi I have two of your liners! I find that using the box or tunnel that comes with the liner really helps to keep them in one place! Only problem is that they keep eating them.....
One of my girls makes a habit of completely stripping her tunnels and then trying to eat the paper, even with stuff to chew.,,,..don't know why they find it tastier than kale

I have 4 guinea pigs and I've found the best way to clip their nails is to hold them against your chest with their back tossing your chest so they are basically standing up. It's best to be in a slightly reclined position so they are laying on their backs against your chest but almost upright. Then just hold one paw with your off hand and clippers with main hand and clip away. With this technique their head is usually not in the way and you can get to all paws By the way Guinea Dad, why are you using a transport crate for the piggies instead of just picking them up like you would do to cuddle with them. Are they not hand trained? If anyone is having a hard time hand training their guinea pig. The easiest way to train them is to pick them up even if you have to chase them a little. All guinea pigs run at first. Then sit back in a recliner or something. Put the piggy on your chest and let go. Just let them have out on your chest. My piggies love sitting on me under a blanket. So grab a comforter blanket or something and put it on your chest and legs like normal. Make sure the piggy is up by your neck when you put it on. Lift up the blanket near them so they can walk under the blanket. My piggies usually will go to my tummy and lay down. I've even had a couple of them fall asleep there. I could tell because they would start to wiggle their legs like they were running in their sleep. It's the cutest.

My daughter holds mine,they don't really mind it tbh....i use hooman nail clippers,I find it easier that way....gizmo used to wriggle a lot I had to wrap him in a towel like a burrito lol🤣🤣🤣🤣my 3 new boys are due a clip soon...never attempted that before lol should be fun lol
I've had my two pigs for 4 years and the hardest part is definitely cutting their nails! I try to distract them by hanging some lettuce off of string. Also for the nails that curve I have had some success with using a file and cutting them every 2 weeks instead of once a month. Funny to watch because I have a similar experience.
All my piggies have black nails and 1 of them in particular (male) Screams bloody murder. I usually pop them onto a pillow on their back and give them a treat to eat while i do their nails. I sometimes just put them on their back while on my lap (if i am too lazy to get a pillow for them, altho pillow instead of my lap is better somewhat!) I usually just do their toenails but occasionally their front paw nails too. I try to put it off as much as i can as it's always so draining for me.

Ugh, it is the worst time... I get scared just when I'm about to cut and I think the piggies know because it is at that time they move. Making me more scared for the next mail 😅 I notice a difference when I'm more determined, they feel more calm too. So I have to do it when I'm in a "good mood" and feel confident 😝 Front nails are definitely the worst! Back ones goes so quick. And it's so strange about the curly nails, only one of my pigs has that and her nails are very tricky to cut because of it 🙄

In case you accidentally get the quick, have a little tub of cornflour nearby so thyy don't bleed too much! If you can, take it slow when you cut because it can not only give you a cleaner cut especially if your scissors aren't really sharp, but they'll tell you when it's really hurting. If you've had a piggie go to a vet and get a shot or a wound gets touched, you'll know the difference between "I'm in pain!" and "I'm gonna pee on you if you take cut more nail"
i used to file my guineas nails with a small nail file while giving them some treat and there were no risk for finger cut no pain and no stress for guineas
@@GuineaDad it was real pedicure - it depends how long nails are you can count 10+ minutes but i used to do it every ten days or two weeks so they won't grow to long however at the same time you get cudling with them too as i see it is just joy. you can cut your foam nail file in thinner pieces but remember file only out from the body not towards the body that may hurt!
Accurate guinea pigs are so hard to hard to cut their nails and you don't want to they're always squiggling but they're sharp and you might get a few scratches along the way

Find the source of the ants! One time we kept leaving honey treats away from the pigs and the ants gradually just started going there instead. They could be under your house and that might be why they're getting in so easily :(
Normally our piggies won't really be too bothered about ants but try and lure them away or kill them (not with poison) just in case they bite or something
I have 2 piggies and Eddie has one white paw which is good but then he has 2 ginger and one black one (aaah) and the Elvis's nails are all black (double aaah). It's traumatising lol

Guinea pigs do not really like being held that's why you need a distraction to keep them busy. 😄 Our girls are frequently held also but there is still resistance during nail clipping so we give them cucumbers so they won't resist much while we're trimming their nails. It's also our simple way of thanking them for their cooperation. 😊

We feed our pigs constant cilantro while nail clipping. Keeps them distracted and really speeds up the process.
I have always filed them so I don’t have a good tip on clipping but a flashlight is good to have close by sometimes

I usually pay for the vet to do it because one of the girls peed and pooped over 45+ times in my lap and I just had enough at that point.
