    It's great if you have one or two young cats with no pre-existing conditions. Otherwise, those of us who have elderly, chronically ill animals or who are managing colonies or have multiple pets it's just not feasible or affordable - the premiums go up every year. I see the amount of homeless pets and shelter euthanizations skyrock along with the cost of vet care - who can afford to adequately care for multiple animals anymore? Owning a pet is becoming a luxury only the well off can afford and it's a tragedy - so many kind and generous souls out there who just can't afford it any more. The system is broken, hand in hand with our broken human healthcare system.

      Agreed to all. If you check the price of a 2 year old domestic mixed breed. Now look up 15year old.
      And if you switch insurance, anything will be preexisting conditions on the next company.
      At least if you are a human and have continuous coverage, then switching companies isn't considered nonpayable, and pre-existing.

    As someone who's spent tens of thousands of dollars just saving ONE pet's life, I cannot emphasize enough to get pet insurance. Not only will it ease the difficulties of managing your pet's darkest moments, it'll save you a ton of money too. You don't want to be in a position where you have to choose between money and your pet's life (or even worse, not have a choice at all). And the sooner you can get it, the better, as most insurance plans won't cover pre-existing medical issues.

    My previous cat, Calista, lived until she was 18 years old and developed a heart murmur, tooth issues and ultimately stomach cancer. That made for some very expensive tests and treatments. I had no pet insurance. During the Pandemic in 2020, I adopted my Vivian from a shelter. She had a clean bill of health from the shelter and from my Vet, so I signed her up for pet insurance. I researched it well and went with Trupanion. I also checked with my Veterinarian's office to see who they recommended and they gave Trupanion a sterling review. As a pet owner, you really need to shop around for what insurance works best for you and your pet. I highly recommend Trupanion.

      For what it is, Banfield is great, and the contract you sign tells you what is/isn't covered based on the plan you choose. I've used it for all my cats for the last 13 years, and it's saved me a ton. Every office visit is free, dentals are free, vaccines are free, urinalysis and fecal is free once a year, and bloodwork is free once a year. You can do the free stuff as preventative/diagnostic baseline, or save it for an emergency. You only get a discount on other services. I've saved thousands on vet visits alone for chronic health issues. They will tell you it's a care plan, not insurance, because it's supposed to be more for preventative issues. I'm sorry your friend had a bad experience with it.

    I have trupanion. Just got it since my two of my four cats have chronic issues. Really wish I had gotten it sooner. People I know have been hugely let down by pet insurance (uk) where they would only pay a max of £1k or so and refused to pay up for chronic illness. My sister thought she had top teir insurance then her cat ate a whole strand of tinsel and it cost £5k for the operation to remove it, the insurance only covered £1k. I'd rather just have 1k in the bank and save the premuims. Maybe there's better insurance out there idk.

    • @JT-mz5oc
      @JT-mz5oc Рік тому +4

      There are different forms of coverage... lifetime is the kind you want because the payout limit resets every year as long as you renew. So if, for example, your cat/dog is diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (a lifelong condition) the policy will payout up to the maximum every year for the rest of their lives.
      There's also a huge variation between the level of service and reliability between different insurance companies. I'd only recommend Petplan, Agria and possibly Waggle in the UK. Many less reputable companies will try anything and everything to avoid paying out.
      I would personally never leave a pet of mine uninsured though, because I'd never want to find myself in the position where a beloved pet needs treatment and I cannot pay for it.

    • @MikeWalls7829
      @MikeWalls7829 Рік тому +4

      @@JT-mz5oc maybe I've been too lucky and it's warped my perspective. I have had 8 cats over the years and none of them ever needed any medical attention other than being neutered or speyed. The bigger influence on their life expectancy was whether or not they were outdoors cats. Indoor cats live 3 times longer than outdoor ones cos of the plethora of dangers they come across outside. I feel bad for only having indoor kittys from now one cos they might not have quite so much fun, but they get lots more life.

      @@MikeWalls7829 You've definitely been fortunate I'd say. I've only had the one cat, and she was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease when she was 11 years old. It's a genetic condition but she never showed any signs of illness until her latter years. Anyway she lived for another 3 and a 1/4 years after her diagnosis, and in that time her vet bills totalled over £8000. If she hadn't had insurance I'd have been in a real mess. I'd have found some way to pay for it (I'd have sold one of my own kidneys if that's what it took!) but thankfully her insurance paid for almost all of it (besides the excess of £80 once per year).
      As for outside access, I trained my cat to walk on a leash around the garden with me initially. But eventually she learned to stay in the garden without the leash and I just stayed around to supervise. She had a great time chasing bees, butterflies and frogs around during the summers, but she was also safe. The best of both worlds I guess.

    We NEED to really address the fact that vet prices are way too high. Private companies are raking it in on the backs of average people that cannot afford even annual vaccinations. This industry needs to be government regulated to have reasonable costs for basic care or foods and tests. This is for USA and Canada.

    I have had cats most of my adult life and never really heard of pet insurance. When I got my first puppy, 2 years ago, I started looking into insurance for him. I ultimately went with embrace Insurance, one thing I really like about them is they have a 24 hour helpline you can call and as a first time puppy owner boy was that helpful, I mean why do all emergencies happen at 2 AM? I also had a nine-year-old cat that I got insured, that was a little pricey, and she had a pre-existing condition, which was not covered but a year after we got her policy, we found out she had a heart condition. I consider all of that money very well spent as if I ever need to make an important decision about her health, I really only have to consider what is best for her, not what it’s going to cost. I recently got a kitten, and I immediately put her on my policy, that was cheap since she was young and healthy. I intend to cover all of my pets from here on out.

They saved my brother's cat when I was younger. he had kidney stones and my mom was going to have him put down cuz she couldn't afford to have him sedated. we all knew he was going to be gone and she comes home with the cat alive. they wound up getting the kidney stones out without sedating him which he did not enjoy. we had him for 23 more years he took off after she died he was an inside outside and he just disappeared...
    She got a prescription of Prednisone for the itchies, she was given an antibiotic shot, and like I said she no longer gets flea collars... She doesn't need them anyway...

    One of our cats is ours because my girlfriend literally couldn't afford the vet care for her. We took the kitty in to keep her out of a shelter. It also means she can come over and spend time with her kitty as much as she wants to.
    A lot of people are surrendering their pets because they can't afford the cost of care. This is especially true of senior animals who need more frequent care and more expensive care.
    Veterinary care is on track to be just as broken as our human healthcare and there is really no excuse for it. Pet insurance is only practical for young and healthy animals. Cost goes up with age and their coverage doesn't help enough as the animals get into their senior years with the more expensive care needs.

    I can’t agree enough. We opted not to insure our first cat when we first adopted him. Within a few months, he developed some mystery issues. It turned out he had allergies but he had over a thousand dollars worth of tests before someone did an allergy panel. We learned our lesson and insured our second cat the moment we had her home; now listen, the insurance has already paid for itself for years into the future. She ate something, had an obstruction, and had emergency surgery. It was a BLESSING to be able to stand in that office and ask them to do exactly what is best without batting an eyelash at the bill. Not only did it save money but it made a horrifying, no-good-very-bad situation so much easier.

      @@caros8298 Yes! That's how they were with us. I wasn't offended. I thought it was a great idea make sure your new pet won't be alone for a long period of time. You know how some people say they want a pet, but after work they go out with friends, come home and go to bed with no interaction with their Furbaby.

    I had to stop my pet insurance for a while because I didn't have the money anymore. Never had needed it anyway. That was after I had adopted 2 Kittens from the Streets and had gone through the whole medicine song and dance with them. Then, at their estimated 2 year birthmonth, one of them went missing and the other decided to eat a silicone brush and almost die from a clogged stomach. I went back on insurance real fast, but obviously the one time I needed it, I didn't have it...

    I have 5 cats ! I had insurance once for my oldest at the time. It didn't pay that well(Nationwide) and I had to pay upfront and wait weeks to get paid by insurance. Didn't work for me and i can't afford to insure 5 cats. Not possible. Otherwise, I would do that. Now I'm retired and its even harder. Companies AND vets maje it very hard to take care of your pets. And then folks and vets complain that you are not taking adequate care of your pets !! It is entirely cost prohibitive.

    Where I’m from it’s now law that all cats must be chipped, registered and have insurance. Also I think you have to make sure your outdoor cats can’t reproduce, so to not create strays or more abandoned cats.

    Stripey👖 here has insurance. Insurance also meant I was able to save Kitten when she suffered a blood clot in that Y-vein by her tail. Emergency - as in right now - treatment and the insurance saved her life.
