- There are lots of questions around if you need to actually code the battery when replacing it on newer Audi models. In this video we show you how to perform that coding on a B8.5 Audi S4. And show you where the battery is on that model.

They could just as easily have a reset function, like the oil change and Inspection reset. The system just needs to know that the part is new.
The fact that they look for part#, vendor code, and serial # is to reinforce the idea that you must have a genuine Audi part. This will work on many folks who do not know better, and go to the dealer and drop $350 on a batt that can be had for $150.
I have a family member who recently went to Benz dealer for her car and way, way overpaid for a battery. And the dealer reinforced the idea with her, that you should never use a 3rd party batt in your car, " because it will cause so many problems" .... Marketing BS.

are you sure on this and that the bem code contains no information as to the battery capacity and type? (agm vs we cell, which have different voltages, and affects how much charge the car sees it needs to give...
@@wrxkyle That's a very fair point. I guess I'm thinking that you would only put an AGM, but you could do a traditional batt. and that info would indeed matter.
@@wrxkyle my car needs the part number because it contains the correct AH of the battery. I replaced my battery recently and the car wouldn't charge it past 80%. I changed the serial number in Vcds by 1 digit and the car then knew it was a new battery and allowed it to charge to 100%. The new battery would have failed prematurely as it wasn't fully charging.
Any way to do this without a laptop?
Wow I came back from a deployment a few years ago to a dead battery and had no idea I was supposed to reprogram it. This would of saved me from having to buy a whole new battery almost 6 months later. Thanks for the videos guys!

Great video. Addressed every single question that I had about changing the battery in my A4. The dealership wants 1 hr of labour to recode. Seems absurd after having watched this.
I mean, it does take time, its not like they will charge 1/2 hour instead of 1 hour. You pay by the hour.
@@CarsandCoding Auto mechanics routinely charge for partial hours; i.e. 2.4, 1.6, 3.5 etc.

Johnson Controls makes the OE battery and they make Autocraft, which has codes embossed in the plastic. It’ll work.
I put a generic battery in our Q7 and just changed one digit like you did. Seems to be ok so far. It's been about a year.
Did you not change the battery brand in the software? Or what about Ah?
@@Tinez87 it wasn’t a brand that was listed. It was an Exide. I think changing the serial number just resets the state of health calculations.
@@dB_944 Ahh ok so changing the serial is enough for the car to reset and recognise the new battery and charge it accordingly?
@@Tinez87 well, it seems to have worked so far. It’s been 3-4 years since.
Requiring a serial number to change a battery is stupid, the car already knows how much voltage the alternator outputs, days and mileage since last battery service, all it needs is a “Reset Battery Life” option in the same service menu as the oil change and brake pad resets.

You can just make a serial number up. So long as the car sees a new serial number it will recognise it as a different battery. Common advice is to just change the last digit. A option in the service menu would be convenient though.

Thanks for the video! Upgraded my B8.5 to a Braille Endurance battery. The #s on the battery are not enough for the coding. So I just changed the last two digits of what was already in the system and saved it as it was accepted during the test. We shall see!

@@zendaq no, I just changed that last two numbers before the the letters at the end.
I changed mine right before it died! It was really low! I used a jumper to foul the computer that battery was fine and I installed the new battery! That’s was About 2 years ago and it’s still running good 👍🏻

Hi there! Well one day! I tried to start my vehicle and I did.. but barely so I knew that battery was going out.. So I got a new battery with the exact serial number.. and before I disconnected the old one.. I hooked up the jumper to the terminals tu and turned on the jumper on a boost mode! And then I disconnected the battery.. then I put the new battery hooked the terminal and removed the jumper.. and I didn’t have to program anything.. and I did it right out side the Audi dealership! when I took in the battery core! They asked me how did you do it?! Lol.. and I told him and they just huh 🤔 lol! Well it worked 🤙🏼😎

You need obd11 it’s about$100 but it will be worth having one in the future to troubleshoot check engine lights etc.

I remember visiting the local Audi tech maybe 5 years ago and he was changing a battery like this. "Will you look at this shit?" or something to the extent of that was said. I get that Germans do crazy shit, but man, a battery shouldnt be this involved to change, or am I crazy? :)

Tbh they should've made batteries last the life of the cars by now. Even Tesla is only now starting to do it for the 12V system. Lead acid technology is as old as cars are. A typical gas car could do just fine with some 20Ah lithium pack. I'm waiting to see what type of battery Tesla is going to use for functionality in colder climates.
You guys have great videos on this S4. How come no rear diff and transfer case service DIY? I've seen that you recommend the service even though Audi does not.

Very helpful video...but my OBD app has a different screen. Is it different on an iPhone versus Android? Also, when I enter in the serial info and part number it keeps telling me "wrong entry", even if I just repost the current info. Any tips?

wow i learned something new about my car today
My 2011 VW CC wasn't programmed from the factory even. Later the battery was replaced for a genuine (Varta) & the dealership didn't re-program. I did it myself via VCDS, and it was much simpler than this OBD11, don't need these codes, except one correlating to battery capacity if I remember correctly.
Battey needs to be coded because based on the voltage of the battery, the alternator will ramp up charging as the battery gets older? WHY is the car not smart enough to read the new battery and figure out the new battery has higher voltage on its own?? 🤔🤔🤔
I'm from Mexico and I just installed a new battery in my Leon Mk3. The battery had no BEM code, but the adaptation battery only asked for Ah capacity, vendor and serial number. I changed the original efb battery for a agm battery. By the way, I changed the battery 'cause it had almost 4 years. It worked fine but the midtronics says replace battery. I prefer to replace battery before it fails.

Hi, I have to remove the battery for an upcoming indoor car show so I will be reconnecting the existing battery. If that's the case do I need to update the info if it's still reading the info from the previous coding which would be the same battery I'd be reconnecting?
I bought a dashcam and an external battery for my 2019 Golf R. When direct connecting to the fuse panel I would assume I need to disconnect the cars battery first when dealing with the fuse panel? Will I need to recode the car if I disconnect the battery?

How do you perform a physical boost leak test on a Mk7 GTI? I did mine incorrectly and some oil shot out my timing chain cover because I didn't leave my oil filler off. Please make a video on this .
Wonder if I could get your professional opinion. The battery in my A7 died suddenly, no slow decay, just one day wouldn't turn on and was sitting at basically 0V. After some research and decidedly not wanting to spend $400 on a battery recode, I decided to hook the car up to a charger and then hot swapped the battery while the system was running from the charger. I did this in case Audi would notice and acknowledge the disconnecting of the old battery and potentially stop me from driving with an non-official replacement; just being overly cautious. I do however have an OBD11 but did not know I could recode it myself, do you recommend this now a few thousand miles after the initial replacement?

My 2017 B9 A4 doesn't show "Long adaptation" in my OBDEleven menu. It only shows "Adaptation." It gives you the option to change the Amp hours (Ah), the manufacturer code and the serial number. I hope this works.

B7 Audi A4 Avant Quattro here, I just had my battery and stuff tested and they said i need a new voltage regulator and to replace the entire alternator. Can I get a way with just replacing the VR?

I think the BEM code supplies battery capacity data to the car, so faking it may be a problem if installing a codeless battery. Probably best to buy one with identical capacity and technology, and just change the serial number, leaving the BEM unchanged.
In the Audi warranty & maintenance booklet it references filling the battery at a certain mileage. Is that a hold over from Europe or are these batteries servicable?

FWIW I tried to follow this and it would not take the serial, even with the spaces and also trying to use the random # thing for the serial numbers after the mfr code. I ended up having to use may clunky hand scan tool to perform the function.
do you suggest connecting a spare battery for the duration of the swap so that computer is still powered memory memory is not cleared? I also saw a case where the radio was asking for a code after battery was swapped. why does that happen?

Very interesting , went to Audi and was quoted 400 euros to supply and fit and code a new battery , when asked what the guarantee was they said 2 years ! How many correctly coded batteries don't last that long ?

I did what you said and followed the instructions on everything. The only thing is my GTi change to an Audi S4 when I was done and now the car laughs at me when I try to start it up. Says something like "try again B!". WTH 😳

Yes. My B8.5 A4 requires coding. (same as that S4)
