I just fixed my sons S4. 2nd gear shift solenoid intermittent failure. When re-installing the valve body, the humble mechanic on his page said 28mm. In this video, he said it may depend on your year. Well my sons B8.5 I noticed it was about 4mm off. I set the servos for 32mm and it fell right into place. Great video.
I did the circuit board replacement on my B8 S4 on my driveway. Here is a tip. If you ended up like me trying to push the mechatronics and it doesn't go in place, even with everything aligned by the book. Get six M6 long bolts(100mm long). Use them in place of the short bolts, they'll keep all aligned properly, push it in place(was a snap), then replace with the correct bolts. My S4 is working like a champ, don't know for how long. 😊
@@michaelstrongbow2336 Yep, I have other cars, so I put about 5k miles, but works great. I added 034 Stage I, 034 tranny tune & intake which is enough for me. Also added Apple Car play. I still need to finish some cosmetic things, this was a Copart "special". Cheers!
In 2007 I bought a 2005 TT with DSG. The DSG was a new thing then, it was only the second year of production. and everyone worried about how costly it would be to repair. About a year in, my TT started shifting really badly…and I thought to myself “oh hell, this is gonna hurt”. I took it into a dealer and they called me the next day to say it was fixed. Turns out the DSG was fine. They replaced a Brake light switch for $45 bucks and it ran perfectly. Apparently, a signal from the brake light harness is important info the car uses to decide which gear to preselect? Anyhow… I still have that car at 130k. The 6 speed DSG still runs perfect.
The stalling looked like the clutch calibration was way out of whack, most likely because operated for so long when faulty. The controller just tried to slowly creep, but because the old shot clutch needed rather high pressure to do that, the controller just send that high oil pressure there. The new clutch grabbed way stronger on it, so before the controller had any chance to respond, the engine stalled. Same reason for the jerky shifting afterwards. I would guess normal procedure would be to reset the calibration. But as it managed to run, it will gradually recalibrate itself even on its own, it will just take some driving time, preferably involving a lot of shifting at various engine loads. For the exhaust bolt direction: I'm pretty sure the engineers knew what they were doing. The thing is, they have to observe other objectives too. First of them is to make sure it will be possible to disassemble even when exposed to road salt. The thing is, the flange forms a kind of barrier, preventing the salty mist just above the road to go above that flange. So what is below, will be way more exposed to that salty mess vs what is above that flange. This way below, so more exposed is just the bolt head, which is rather immune. The way more sensitive thread is then on the upper, cleaner side. Putting the nut down means the thread would be the more exposed part, so more likely get completely jammed by corrosion. And the other aspect is related to the car makers priorities: They care for these things to be serviceable at least somehow, last till the end of the warranty period and then be cheap, so fast and simple to assemble on the production line. The fact it becomes harder, so more expensive (labor) to service after the warranty goes out is not their problem, that would be paid by the customer. Plus I don't think disassembling this would be that big of a deal either, taking into account you have to replace that bolt anyway. So taking an impact hammer-wrench to loose it from the bolt head side and so eventually snapping off that bolt heat would still be good enough way to disassemble that.
My mechanic just recently bought a s4 with a bad Trans, and he replaced it for about $2500, considering that the mech unit alone cost basically as much you 100% should just replace the Trans and don't bother with dsg nightmares.

After replacing the clutch pack the clearances will be different to the adapted values. Therefore using a new or used clutch pack always requires basic settings and adaptions to be performed. Hence when you tried to select drive or reverse it stalled. But repeated attempts will probably get it to work as its always adapting.

My experience is limited to a 2011 Jetta with 7 speed DSG. Two recalls, both for DSG made no difference to the shift and take up quality, which was very poor before and after. At 45,000 km we decided to sell. The best we could get for it was Au $12,500 - for a four year old, always VW serviced, in otherwise good condition. So the depreciation was Au$0.50 per km!! An expensive car
Just to make things easier. The measurements depends on the pins that must be set to neutral inside the box. And for some knowing the production date. Thank you for the video 🇿🇦
So is it strange to have +230k on a 2010 VW CC 2.0t DSG? with 70k with APR tune and the last 30k with APR's K04 turbo and tune and have absolutely no issue with DSG?
I have a 2013 S4 that has a donor transmission from a 2016 S4. I was one of the first S4 owners to post online about upgrading the transmission. Got it done at JH Motorsport . Turns out the B8.5 Transmission does fit in the B8 , but it needs to ODIS to code the unit to the car. Great content fellas.
2013 is a B8.5. You did not upgrade your transmission (unless you have a very early 2013) You went from a b8.5 to a b8.5 that required a OTIS update for the new mech. If you had just replaced your mech, OTIS would have to been used to recode it to your VIN.
Hey! That's why I rather have a manual transmission, RELIABILITY!!!!! and proven repair method 😁. Nice job guys, I love to watch both of your channels 👍
I have replaced a dsg gearbox in a 2010 125TDI diesel Jetta with one from a 2007.103 TDI Jetta. It worked straight up with no coding however the gear change points were not right for the more powerful engine. So I then replaced the mechatronic unit with the one from the original gearbox and presto it all worked as it should and we still have car.
ive been an audi mechanic for 7 years now, incredible how bad those things are, the s-tronic in the b8 s4 is the worst, i am so happy to drive a stick shift with a single mass flywheel from factory that doesnt rattle and without a pos mecatronic, at least the b8+ are easy to work on, more money and less hassle for me :D
My dad and I replaced the clutch and mech unit on my 2013 s7 last month, fixed all my shifting/slipping problems! Did it in the driveway on jackstands as well, that was a nightmare lol
Very nice video . Please note that these tcu's can be cloned with tools like PCM FLASH , this will allow the DIY guys to not have to go to the dealer or use ODIS with geko account .
DSG (DCT) used to screw up the Chinese automobile market in 2012, especially the VW model that have DQ200 7 speed and DQ250 6 speed . The DSG malfunction model include Magotan, Golf, CC, Skoda, Satigar and Scirocco. Mostly, these phenomenon of DSG are low gear palsing noise, lost speed for no reason, and clutch pack overheat.
Very interesting video, personally I have never really worked on DSG gearboxes. I once worked on a Mercedes w221 gearbox that had it's clutches all burnt due to oil starvation, the transmission oil ran close to the radiator with coolant. Defective seals were the culprit.
A common problem is mechatronic failure. You need to learn how to swap the mechatronic and flash it with it software. You can do it with aftermarket tools like kess cmd…
Ended up doing both tsb’s and a clutch upgrade on my b8 by myself. Tons of labor and parts and now i have all these special tools I’ll probably never use again.
I'm getting ready to do the gear range sensor myself. watched tons of videos(mostly Russian which I dont speak) online and downloaded the Audi service manual and I'm feeling confident about doing it. Any info you could pass on I would appreciate it.
Iv got a GOLF MK6 R in the UK and it’s only in 76K and runs like a dream, gear changes are so fast, but I’m going to be putting in a DQ500 in next year as there stronger than the DQ250 because I’ll be going for much more power,DSG is a great box i love it but I’m really lucky because my mate build these boxes and knows them inside & out does RS3 builds in a MK6 GOLF R or a R36 engine in a MK6,many things so I’m blessed if something were to go wrong
Replaced a mech unit on a mk6 golf and just like yours it would stall in drive even after adaptation of clutches, but after some driving it got a lot better with mild problems when cold. In the end car got to the dealer and they replaced the clutches too. Old mech unit had a cracked housing on the accumulator.
Cracked housing is a "common"/known problem, this is a design flaw (VW wants cheap(er) parts from suppliers), customer is the victim...happens over and over agai at VAG.
Great video, I recently had a DSG issue where I could no-longer go into reverse or into even numbered gears ( 2,4,6) on my B8.5 S4 that had only 37k miles. Luckily I had an extended warranty as AUDI quoted the repairs to be £11k
@@Jurrmie The sales rep couldn’t tell me exactly what it was, as it was “too technical”But I believe it has something to do with the clutch 2 as explained at 10:50
@@egeg4216 I have a 2017 Audi S3 and a the dq250 gearbox, and my clutch went after 37k miles from the pervious owner smoking it. Just out of warranty too so I had to pay £1.7k for a new clutch to be fitted!
The main problem is coolant leak of the coolant valve going through the wires to the mechatronics connector and inside the mech unit. That causes malfunction and burn the clutches. Also the trans fluid cooler leaks and the coolant goes into the trans mixing coolant with gearbox fluid, is necessary to do a glicol test. Common issue on all 0B5 DL501 gearboxes
I have a q5 2012 that was unable to engage in reverse gear. Mechanic indicated that I should replace transmission. With the replacement transmission I had to change the drive shaft. Took it to an independent programer to delete TCU files. Currently the replacement transmission drives smooth and engages all gears when cold, and when it is warm it slip in gear 3 and it produces the following intermittent codes: p17e100, p174d00, p17d800, p176b00. and it also produces static code: p179c00 This vehicle is a pain in the ass
Watching this makes me happy that I got rid of the Audi I had I had an 05 A4 quattro it got to the point where every week something was wrong with it it lost power had sounds of air leaking from the boost piping and would not go faster than 50 mph
Nice video!!! do you think it is also possible to have the same result by only replacing the friction plate discs? or it is necessary, let's say a "long term repair" to completely change the clutch
Hey, The DSG on my 2008 A3 TDI is working fine when driving, but mostly when putting it into reverse it makes a clunking noise and it seems to go into gear on the 3rd attempt. Struggling with a no reverse and no even gears. Solved the slamming and jerking replacing the clutch pack but now ive got a clutch pressure too high code
Have same issue with reverse was stall the engine. The problem was I was getting the pressure high for both clutches and I couldn't do the adaptation. So I checked the harness was good and I order the solenoids and now it running without problems
Awesome video! I know you guys are super busy I just wanted to throw it out there that I really miss Cars and Cocktails! Will they're ever be anymore episodes?
Any DSG from 2010-2016 is interchangeable. It is very much possible to run a b8.5 transmission in a b8. I have a 2014 S4 transmission in my 2010. The rear differential is exactly the same 2010-2016 so gear ratio doesn’t matter. Only thing you need is ODIS and maybe a b8.5 driveshaft if you have the early b8 transmission with flange instead of shaft. Also update cooler lines if you have early model in-line filter.
Sounds like an endless money pit, and time sapping excercise, given it seems like the bermuda triangle of transmission issues. Give me a cold beer at the beach anyday over doing that, sure was fun to watch though.
How hard on the clutches is launch control? I have a '13 S6, APR stage1ECU and TCU tune. 125k miles. I've used launch control 9 times. Hopefully the mechanics haven't had fun on the test drive. Service is done more often than called for by about 5k miles.
Thanks Gentlemen very informative looking at an Audi TT mk1 3.2 with a gearbox fault fingers crossed I’ll be able to sort Can the mk1 be converted to manual transmission? Thanks folks 👍👨🏻🏭🇬🇧
What I want to know is how hard is it to swap a DQ250 into a Q3?? I want one sooooo bad cause in theory it could be a good golf r competitor if it had a DSG in it..... seems like it would be pretty straight forward.... no??
I purchased a 2010 s4 which had a bad mechatronic 6 years ago. Purchased a new mechatronic online and had the dealership put it in. Cost me about $3500 with parts and labor. The interesting part was that the new mechatronic that I received stated that it was made it 2014. So I’m wondering if this would be the same mechatronic that is in the b8.5 s4? It was changed when the vehicle had 35k miles. I am currently at 123k miles on the vehicle and haven’t had any mechatronic problems since than.
Stage 1 tune doesn’t require gearbox mapping. But its highly recommended as it completes the package and makes the car go that much smoother with the Stage 1. Stages above require box map.
Having a similar issue with DSG Transmission on Audi A4 B9 2017 after performing an oil and filter change. After putting everything back together and starting the car, running through the gears was not doing anything. The car was simply stuck in place. Tried changing one of the circuit boards, did't resolve the issue. The mechatronic unit was not functioning at all. Not sure sure how a simple change of the filters and oil (OEM once), following the procedures in the repair service manual cause this, but it happened. The solution was replacing the mechatronic unit with a new one. So even though trying to maintain the car as best as possible, it turned out in a bad way and cost quite a lot to repair.
The deal ar has a tsb repairing the whole mechatronic(replacing solenoids with circuit boards), and even have a kit includes solenoids and circuit boards, I've done it millions of time and it 100% fixes the problem.
I had a 93 Beretta that was auto that used to stall after it got warm...wouldn't come out of gear when you slowed down...I would have to floor it to force a downshift then I could stop
My son has code p2711 and p0729 on a 2015 A3 2.0t Quattro 50,000km and no warnings happened on way home. . It’s in limp mode. Poor kid looking at 15000 to replace. Where can I find information on these codes I didn’t see it in your link. Thank you for the video
I visited the offical Audi service few months ago to do a 7 speed s tronic transmission service (oil and filter) for a4 b9 2016. and they replaced the oil. I asked if filter is replaced and they told me that it is not needed. Is this correct, and what should i do? Btw. everything works fine in this moment with the transmission.

Depends on the type of DSG. The DL501 was a problematic one in the beginning.
Is it still working? My dsg stopped at 182k. I had bought car at 140k miles.
You may be able to clone your old unit with pcm flash or AC-DP
Hey! That's why I rather have a manual transmission, RELIABILITY!!!!! and proven repair method 😁. Nice job guys, I love to watch both of your channels 👍
Oh man im happy that i only have manuals 😂 It was still interesting to watch and a lot to learn.
As long as you have the tools and repair manual, you're good to go!
Granny shifting yes! Double clutching no! “2nd brake pedal” for the win
what do u drive?
Is it the same as in the B8 A5 3.0 TDI?(240hp one)
What about the dl 382 on the b9
My dad and I replaced the clutch and mech unit on my 2013 s7 last month, fixed all my shifting/slipping problems! Did it in the driveway on jackstands as well, that was a nightmare lol
That’s brave.... bravo to you guys
Full respect 👍
What’s the measurement for the shift forks for the 2013 model
Very nice video . Please note that these tcu's can be cloned with tools like PCM FLASH , this will allow the DIY guys to not have to go to the dealer or use ODIS with geko account .
Do you have more details or a know of a guide somewhere for PCMFlash?
DSG (DCT) used to screw up the Chinese automobile market in 2012, especially the VW model that have DQ200 7 speed and DQ250 6 speed . The DSG malfunction model include Magotan, Golf, CC, Skoda, Satigar and Scirocco. Mostly, these phenomenon of DSG are low gear palsing noise, lost speed for no reason, and clutch pack overheat.
And cracks in the housing of the megatronic, this is actually a common problem...and expensive to repair!
@@stefan2796 I'm sorry to hear that
Thank you for these fantastic videos. They are of enormous value. Well done.
Where have you guys been? Miss the more frequent videos and definitely miss the cars with cocktails podcast.
Is there an option for converting it to manual?
Ended up doing both tsb’s and a clutch upgrade on my b8 by myself. Tons of labor and parts and now i have all these special tools I’ll probably never use again.
Now you're the guy to go to. Put the word out, can make some money doing this job for others!
I'm getting ready to do the gear range sensor myself. watched tons of videos(mostly Russian which I dont speak) online and downloaded the Audi service manual and I'm feeling confident about doing it.
Any info you could pass on I would appreciate it.
Why not ebay the special tools? Others will need them too.
I refer to an article called [DSG SOP 5.0] Thru it I really understand how properly to use DSG
You guys together is just the best shit ever!
Does it worth to do a manual swap instead if DSG is bad ?
There are torque screwdrivers for this sort of thing. Check PB swiss tools for example.
Great work, knowledgeable and funny!
Great video, I recently had a DSG issue where I could no-longer go into reverse or into even numbered gears ( 2,4,6) on my B8.5 S4 that had only 37k miles. Luckily I had an extended warranty as AUDI quoted the repairs to be £11k
what was the issue? My 2014 Jetta TDI is currently doing that
@@Jurrmie The sales rep couldn’t tell me exactly what it was, as it was “too technical”But I believe it has something to do with the clutch 2 as explained at 10:50
@@egeg4216 I have a 2017 Audi S3 and a the dq250 gearbox, and my clutch went after 37k miles from the pervious owner smoking it. Just out of warranty too so I had to pay £1.7k for a new clutch to be fitted!
@@Jurrmie its your clutch 2 tolerance limit will have been reached which means the clutch needs replacing desperately, its on its last legs haha
@@MrWaheedulHaque thanks, I’ll look into it. I was sure that the mech unit could’ve caused that
Can you fix my worn DSG clutch plates for me :), Its the dreadful 7 speed dry gearbox on the MK6 Golf
Common issue on all 0B5 DL501 gearboxes
afaik, the 0b5 is cooled with an oil cooler, there is no coolant near the transmission?
@@benjaminberger9629 yes, 0b5 has the oil cooler but is cooled with coolant. is an exchanger
Do you have any overview of the DQ200 7-speed? Having some issues with mine. Great video though!
I did think you were gonna read that whole list. I was pleased when you didn't. : )
I have a q5 2012 that was unable to engage in reverse gear. Mechanic indicated that I should replace transmission. With the replacement transmission I had to change the drive shaft. Took it to an independent programer to delete TCU files. Currently the replacement transmission drives smooth and engages all gears when cold, and when it is warm it slip in gear 3 and it produces the following intermittent codes: p17e100, p174d00, p17d800, p176b00. and it also produces static code: p179c00
This vehicle is a pain in the ass
Watching this makes me happy that I got rid of the Audi I had I had an 05 A4 quattro it got to the point where every week something was wrong with it it lost power had sounds of air leaking from the boost piping and would not go faster than 50 mph
The wheeler fat wrench is good for light torque specs, goes 10-65 inch pounds. 3 newton meters is about 26.5 inch pounds.
Nice video!!! do you think it is also possible to have the same result by only replacing the friction plate discs? or it is necessary, let's say a "long term repair" to completely change the clutch
Hey,
The DSG on my 2008 A3 TDI is working fine when driving, but mostly when putting it into reverse it makes a clunking noise and it seems to go into gear on the 3rd attempt. Same when putting it into P. If it doesn't go into R or P the PRNDS Flashes and engine light comes on but drives fine.
Fault code 1: Turbocharger Boost Control Sensor "A" circuit low.
Fault code 2: P2711 'Unexpected mechanical Gear disengagment.
Can you please share the photo of the solenoid you replaced i am having clutch 1 pressure too high and it stalls the car on reverse and 1st gear.
Awesome video! I know you guys are super
busy I just wanted to throw it out there that I really miss Cars and Cocktails! Will they're ever be anymore episodes?
Good engineering job guys, congratulations from Hungary. You might know a country where the A3, TT, S3 were produced and still.... Rgds Jácint
Did you open the replacement clutch pack for inspection. Why didn't you simply replace the clutch friction and steel plates.
Is there a final verdict on the GTI 6 speed DSG vs 7 speed DSG when it comes to tuning, power handling, and overall reliability?
Any DSG from 2010-2016 is interchangeable. It is very much possible to run a b8.5 transmission in a b8. I have a 2014 S4 transmission in my 2010. The rear differential is exactly the same 2010-2016 so gear ratio doesn’t matter. Only thing you need is ODIS and maybe a b8.5 driveshaft if you have the early b8 transmission with flange instead of shaft. Also update cooler lines if you have early model in-line filter.
Or you can send S4 to the junkyard and live trouble free.
Any idea where I can find a guide to do this with ODIS? Fitting B8.5 PWW box to my 2010 B8.
Sounds like an endless money pit, and time sapping excercise, given it seems like the bermuda triangle of transmission issues. Give me a cold beer at the beach anyday over doing that, sure was fun to watch though.
I did the repair kit twice failed both times exactly one year apart. 3rd time changed the mechatronics.
wow crazy thing
@@TVTika if you have a s4 from 09/13 and you start getting mechatronic issues just replace the whole unit with a newer one and you’ll be set for life
How hard on the clutches is launch control? I have a '13 S6, APR stage1ECU and TCU tune. 125k miles. I've used launch control 9 times. Hopefully the mechanics haven't had fun on the test drive. Service is done more often than called for by about 5k miles.
B8.5 mech unit will work with B8 , just need to adapt immobilizer to tcu.
My 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit. I'm glad it has a manual transmission built to last
Please do more upgrade videos on the B8.5 s4! Something like the motor mounts! There are no videos on that!
Thanks Gentlemen very informative looking at an Audi TT mk1 3.2 with a gearbox fault fingers crossed I’ll be able to sort
Can the mk1 be converted to manual transmission? Thanks folks 👍👨🏻🏭🇬🇧
S4 B8 only or even the A4 ? Thanks
Thanks for the video. My Passat flashes the PRNDS on the dash display when I put it into reverse :( and it hangs ... have to restart the car :((
What I want to know is how hard is it to swap a DQ250 into a Q3?? I want one sooooo bad cause in theory it could be a good golf r competitor if it had a DSG in it..... seems like it would be pretty straight forward.... no??
Yes b8.5 videos. Love it. I have a 14 s5
Do you think the 7 speed DSG from the Golf R 7.5 can take a stage 1 tune without having the box mapped?
Map it.
Stage 1 tune doesn’t require gearbox mapping. But its highly recommended as it completes the package and makes the car go that much smoother with the Stage 1.
Stages above require box map.
I have an obd11 - what can I do to find the adaptations needed if I change the mech electrical harness?
Is this the same transmission in the S6? Would 2016 S6 be safe bet?
My 2008 mk5 fsi 1.6l has a error code P0734 gear 4 incorrect ratio. What you show in this video would u say the fixes are the same
Hi.. did you change the axle shaft seal in the gearbox??
How much to fix your gearbox then????
Do you have any content on a 6sp automatic Quattro trans for a 2014?
hello please 2can you tell me how or what's the best way to know the oil level of this transmission
I have a B9 is stronic okay in those ?
I have a 2006 A3 8P FWD DSG, 270 000km and ZERO Transmission Problem! 🤘😎
