Lake Superior PP Interior Canoe Trip: Gamitagama Onward (1 of 2)

  • A trip into Lake Superior PP's interior (Gamitagama to Old Woman Lake and beyond) with a good showing of wildlife, speckled trout, and fall colours. A less-than-accurate map, 7km of steep and muddy portages, along with the rain, wind, and chill of autumn made for a fairly challenging trip. But in the end, Old Woman Lake proved that she was worth the effort.

    I find myself watching your older videos in between your new ones coming out. They are so enjoyable to watch, especially the ones catching brook /speckled trout which are my favorite fish. I am looking forward to seeing more adventures up in God's country with Jon and Erin. There is just something intangibly refreshing about watching you all having such a good time with the simple pleasures of canoeing, fishing, camping, etc. in such awesomely beautiful country .

    Felt your pain at the start of your journey. We stayed over night at Far Island as well. FYI the Lake Superior Backcountry team cleared what they could of that trail from Gamitagama to Old Woman to Mijinemungshing summer of 2019. August 2019 - the path from Mirimoki to Mijin was a killer. Nearly dried out marsh due to the huge beaver dam at end of Mirimoki. Scooted synchronously for a long time along the marsh until the water got deep enough for us to paddle. Then portaged along the edge of the marsh for 2 Km thereafter until reaching Mijin. Beautiful lily ponds!

      Thanks Julie! They weren't that bad overall, I was mostly caught off guard by my own preconceptions. I almost never paddle in operating parks and I guess I had this vision that they were all Algonquinesque. I've heard that is a very rough go through Mirimoki. Well done! I believe Brad from Explore the Backcountry documented it on video, if memory serves.

    I’ve been following your videos since last year and the most obvious detail is your concern for the fish and ensuring that it doesn’t suffer any more then it has too. With that being said I’m curious on which is your preferred means of dispatching a fish. I’m not an avid fishermen but I do fish and I’m always concerned if I’m doing it the most effective/humane way.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  5 років тому +1

      I appreciate that Alain...I try. While it looks and sounds like the most barbaric and least humane way to do it, I really believe crushing the skull with a large rock or heavy stick, and with a solid object beneath, is the most humane way. I crush it repetitively (probably half a dozen times in quick succession) to make sure it's done, but I try to make the first one count so that the fish dies instantly. I paddle to shore immediately, and keep the fish in the water (in my net) on the way so it's not suffocating all the while. Stringers or allowing it to suffocate in the boat should be illegal, and bleeding the fish out sounds like a bad way to go. For ice fishing, if it's at least -15, it seems like the cold takes them pretty quickly. Good on you for thinking about it.

Now all I can think about is googling" the movie Backcountry" Thirty plus years of sleeping in bear country and I still get nervous.I am not afraid of being attacked but just having to deal with them in camp is completely nerve-wracking. Thanks for all your great work and videos. My wife and I are planning this trip next month. Any advice on that 800m port from pond to Picea. Your video suggests following a stream below the pond after the first 450 m Portage instead of the portage marking on the old map? Any recollections would be great! I used to camp with Joe Robinet, our second trip together was the Belanger Lake series many years ago. It was fun watching you guys work together, as buggy and mess as that trip might have been. KGD

    • @benalles8122
      @benalles8122 4 роки тому

      Same question I think. After the 450 and pond, there's an 880 marked on the map. It looks like you did the first part of that, then went down the creek for the rest of it. Satellite looks like the creek is do-able the whole way. Going with family in August and deciding between Belanger and Old Woman. Old Woman seems to offer more adventure and unknown.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 роки тому

      Hey KGD! Joe mentioned that when we were out on Mijin last month :) Yeah that 800m port doesn't exist where it's marked. Go to the southwest end of the pond. You'll see a beaver dam and a port sign. All you have to do is lift over the BD on the west side of the creek, then follow the creek along the mucky shore and you'll run into the trail after probably 100m or so. It's not hard if you do that...confusion was the main obstacle. Lots of elevation change on these trails though that's for sure. Hahah no disrespect taken whatsoever but I appreciate your thoughtfulness!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  4 роки тому

      Hey Ben, I haven't done Belanger but I definitely get that sense as well. However, as I said to KGD, there's significant elevation change on the ports getting in there that could challenge a family with heavy loads...unless you're planning on playing pack mule :) And you gotta do them all on the way back out too!

      @@LostLakes So in other words, the same saying immortalized by Andy Baxter (of Happy Camper fame) applying to Killarney applies to Lake Superior...."In Killarney all portages point up". • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  5 років тому

      Thanks Michael! It sounds like that route from Mijin had literally dried up. Definitely...Most important thing I could say is to get two loops of ropes for each end of the hammock to extend the distance you can find trees to hang from, and to help you get the right distance so that you're positioned right under the tarp, since it's not custom made to fit like a packaged hammock solution. The ropes should be different lengths so you have a bit of play as to which end you need to be closer. I bought a thick 50ft polycord and made one loop about 17ft (34ft of rope) and the other about 13ft (26ft of rope). It can be a bit awkward solution, but once set up it's by far my favourite setup.

      Thanks again!! That's awesome--it's an excellent route. Bark Lake is okay (has the lodge and an outpost camp), but the very best part is Big Trout to Boumage (and walk the Bark Lake portage as a trail for the giant pines). And then this past weekend in the backcountry I did NOTHING but think of bears the entire time. Had a dream about a moose running through my camp and getting caught up in my tarp and running off with it, and then I poked the side of my tent and a bear swatted my hand. then I woke up to a completely deafeningly silent night.. so I laid there listening for bears... Somehow though I know I will watch it despite the fact lol. I actually got bluff charged by a mama bear once when I was in st croix state park which is a park about 45 minuets north of mpls. I stumbled upon her and her cubs while hiking next to a creek. She was pissed that I was there and I could tell. When she came at me I about had a heart attack. Only on the main camera...thought about it for the GoPro but the onboard mics are reasonable most of the time as long as you project, especially Erin's Hero7 (I've got the 6). It's no longer waterproof and much less convenient (e.g. can't slip it in your pocket) with the external mic, so at that point it defeats the purpose of a GoPro for my applications. I used to really enjoy Lake Superior Provincial Park before the Harris government privatised the provincial parks. By that, I mean that the provincial government greatly reduced funding the parks and forced them to partially rely on "user charges." The charges are so high that I practically cannot afford to fish there anymore. The soak (cost) resembles the gouge for a lift ticket at ski areas. If fish only a single day, and the fish decide to be inactive, it can seem like I've been had by a sleazy salesman.

    Oh no !! My wife watched that stupid movie. We just got back from a trip in Algonquin. Radiant lake. That’s all she could talk about was bears and bad dreams. Lol we should have warned you about that movie. Lol sorry Jon.
