Lake Superior PP Interior Canoe Trip: Old Woman & Back (2 of 2)

  • A trip into Lake Superior PP's interior (Gamitagama to Old Woman Lake and beyond) with a good showing of wildlife, speckled trout, and fall colours. A less-than-accurate map, 7km of steep and muddy portages, along with the rain, wind, and chill of autumn made for a fairly challenging trip. But in the end, Old Woman Lake proved that she was worth the effort.

    Big hugs, brother. You getting a bit choked up about the end of the season, hit home for me . I get the same feeling, every time that I do a backcountry canoe trip, as I'm always missing my dad, who was my travel buddy.

    I watched your April trip with Xander where you mentioned “this is where it all began”, and i decided to go back to the beginning. I found your channel last year at one of the lowest points of my life. I have deep roots in the Northcountry of Minnesota so watching canoeing videos from the boreal forests of Ontario became just what I needed to break out of my funk. I’m putting this here, five years after this video/trip posted, because your heartfelt speech at the fire about how much you miss canoe tripping during the long winter left a mark on me. Some of my best memories have been “out there” and I don’t take enough time to visit the woods anymore. Your videos are inspiring and therapeutic (for far more people than just me I am sure!) and I look forward to making plans to get outside more again. Thank you for sharing your passion, your vision, and your soul with us.

    I adore your videos. I find in you what I think is a kindred spirit. I am of the north, kapuskasing, Ontario. I was s junior ranger as a teenager. I crave the wild, the wind in the trees, the silence. Your videos both make me jealous and inspire me...thank you

    That was a very very good episode! A bit sad but with the camping season winding down...you capture the north’s beauty...its disregard how you’re feeling (rain,weather,cold). I envy your trips, when I come home from the North takes me at least a week to get my mind back to home /work. Soon to be retiring hopefully spending lots more time roaming about as you do! I admire how you only ever take what you need! It would be my pleasure to bump into you in the woods. Erin too...she’s a trooper! I can feel warmth in the suns rays now...doings coming! Hope that makes ya smile! Bye Timothy

    My 18-year-old son, Jonathan, was your number 740th subscriber. We recently rehabbed a debilitated old heavy Pelican canoe. Removing the plastic seating and installing painstakingly custom wood seating. It’s beautiful, but sea worthiness is yet to be proven.
    It’s channels like your’s that inspire us. Your drive and tenacity is contagious. We were once land ‘lobing’ fly fishermen, exploring the trout streams along the Southern Appellations. Tight, dense foliage makes specialty casting a priority. Yet the dream of paddling, exploring waters unknown gets into the bones. We don’t have the abundance of water you have up North, but we’ll make do. The point is... you’ve had an impact! The time, the effort, the pain, the joy, the calm, the rush of accomplishment and the medical scotch are not lost. Your personal quest to fish around the next corner and the next corner and the next corner are epic. You don’t shy away from publishing your failures or your accomplishments. You got style!
    UA-cam is a funny vehicle. You’ve been at this awhile, paid your dues, provided more than quality content and you have a million dollar smile. Let’s be honest. You have 740 subs. I want to know why? I take my UA-cam viewing very personally. I’m very loyal to those that are worthy. I rank you among the ‘Joe’ ‘Robinets,S’ the Shawn James, Doug Outside, and others....
    We need to get these numbers up. Bottom line! You are worth it. I don’t know what I can do personally, but I have skills too... just be patient, and the rewards will follow. I will put the word out in my own little way, but you will SUCCEED ON YOUR OWN if you just keep doing what your doing. (Maybe you should invest in a Grandfurs Bruks, The Bushcrafter’s dig the axe). It’s a compromise. I know. I dig the axe... mine is a eBay score rehandled for under 50 US $. Put ‘Bushcraft’ in your damn title. Get a farro rod. Leave the Triskets at home (I love triskets)
    I get it. You are who you are. We all have are priorities. We all have our limits. But your channel should be bigger. You should be reaping the rewards. You know it, I know, so throw a curve ball. Change it up a little. Bushcraft is hot. Take a ride. You’re a bad ass, and don’t forget it. Hell, get a puppy. People love dogs. And don’t get a job.... there over rated. (They do pay the bills). But UA-cam could be the dream come true. Let’s get these numbers up where they deserve to be. Your channel gave something to me I can’t repay... so I will do my best to champion your channel.
    Best wishes...... MG

      Snail, I can't thank you enough for such a kind comment. Coming from someone whose passion is evident (and with such excellent child-naming skills) and who has taken the time to watch and comment, that means a lot. And "leave the Triskets at home" & "medical scotch"...LOL.
      You're entirely right about how to make a channel succeed. But fads, clickbait titles, gimmicks, giveaways, asking people to subscribe, etc. isn't my nature. I was in marketing before I reset my life a couple of years ago, and now I have a strong aversion for self-promotion and silly trends. Organic growth is the strongest, even though it may take the longest. Perhaps it will never amount to anything that way, but I guess I'm stubborn about my values. If the content is good enough to merit sharing or telling a friend about it, then it can grow that way. And if it doesn't get that support, then it's not exceptional enough.
      I think most of my trips are too obscure to be frequently searched (this video being an exception), compared to someone who hits the big parks and therefore their videos are likely to be searched. Moreover, a lot people aren't looking for a monologue in their videos---they want interaction and comaradery. And dogs as you say. So true that people love bushcraft but I'm just not into it. It's something I might do at home in retirement, but in the backcountry I find it really impractical (despite that it's portrayed as the opposite) and I'd rather go fishing 10 times out of 10. My only angle is, well... angling :)
      I do this to share my passion, for a creative outlet, to extend my trips (mentally), and to "share" the trips with others since I'm usually solo (by choice). Sure, if I could make money from this that would be the dream, but I don't see that happening even if I were to push it, and certainly don't have a burning desire to recruit subscribers though self-promotion or gimmicks. A comment like yours is what makes it all worthwhile for me.
      Enjoy your "new" vessel (kudos on the rehab and saving it from wasting away) and thank you (and your son) again for your support! I really appreciate it.
      -Jon

    It hit 97 degrees F herein Virginia today. My last trip to Ontario was in 2010 when my wife and I drove the north shore of Superior, turned right at Nipigon, and took 11 all the way back to return along Lake Champlain to points south. Really wish we could have squeezed in some back county camping. Your channel is inspiring. Thanks!! 👍🏻👍🏻

      Thanks so much Jesse! Oh man that heat kills me. Here on the north shore of Superior, the big lake moderates the summer temps and it rarely even hits 25C (77F). I love it. Making that drives just fills you with wanderlust eh...every lake just begs to be explored.

    Hi, As a fellow paddler and angler I’ve recently watched a ton of your content, I can’t get enough! I’ve fallen for many of the places you’ve shown me. I use the map apps you’ve suggested and discover the routes myself. I’m from Wisconsin USA so I know a bit about your geology, Lake Superior is on our border too. An inland sea divides us, but we have much in common; a love of freedom and the pursuit of happiness through natural beauty found in conjunction with water. Cheers man, I can’t wait for your next show :)

      As we slide closer to the snow and dark, I want to share with you, Jon, some tricks I use to beat back the winter doldrums. I too struggle with the absence of backcountry “living” during the winter and I’ve been struggling a little longer than you (almost 45yrs old now). I started hot tenting a couple years ago and its made a huge difference in my attitude! I pull an expedition-length sled with skis and snowshoes, getting way out to the backcountry lakes I like to go to in the warmer months, then set up a winter hot tent base camp. I drill holes near the “lodge”, set up tipups, then do day trips from there and fish other lakes. On a week trip I might move the base twice, just to get some different scenery. Seeing the country under snow, so so quiet, has inspired me. The aurora is usually stronger in the winter too, and it brings out different landscape and wildlife. Do you hot tent, Jon? Maybe give it a try, it could stave off that thirst.

    • @cybersincere
      @cybersincere 6 років тому

      The Tuber that totally inspired my hot tent passion is @Wintertrekker. I’ve learned a ton about winter safety and paddling from him too. You Canadians really have it going on!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  6 років тому

      You're so right about this. Last winter, I told myself I would get one this season. However I've talked myself into a pop-up ice fishing hut instead. With the hut, I can still hike into back lakes (albeit not as far), and if I want to sleep overnight, I'll try a quinzee or even just a lean-to. I think too much condensation will form inside to sleep in the hut. The hut is also $250 vs. $1500+ for a quality hot tent setup. One big factor is that I would rather save my vacation time for soft water, so if I'm limited to just weekends, I don't think I'm getting the most out of that investment. Another big (silly) reason is that I'm a huge Leafs fan and I hate missing HNIC :) But setting up a base camp, fishing, the silence of winter, powder, etc. sounds pretty wonderful, especially if an aurora comes along. Someday, I'll get one... it may even be in retirement.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  6 років тому

      And agreed about Wintertrekker. Solid channel with no gimmicks or garbage. Over a quarter-million lakes in Ontario alone...gotta love it!

    When you are on a solo trip have you ever tried sitting in the front seat facing the back of the canoe? I do that whenever I fly fish by myself. Helps balance out the canoe front to back without adding a weight. Some canoes have a brace that would make that difficult without modifying, but yours seems to be pretty open behind front seat. Love your vids and it is really cool to be able to ask questions and converse with you in the comments. Glad you liked the boat fishing rules I shared on your hook removal video.

    • @LostLakes

      Yeah that's definitely the way to go. This canoe doesn't have any thwarts to get in the way, and it's only 15' so pretty solid for soloing. Our new 17-footer is not as ideal for it lol. Thanks Charles :)

    Beautiful video. I plan to do this one too to the Sand River, and decided to check who might have done it. I'll take a small drone in for extra coverage. One thing I have found is that with specs, which are so sensitive, it is really helpful to cut 2 of the three treble hooks and pinch the barb on the single hook left. I rarely lose one when keeping the pressure on the line, and a slacking of the line near the canoe or flip with the old needle nose pliers is sufficient to send them on their way without damaging the slime layer. Every Spring I go far into Algonquin and "flip" 60 to 100 specs off the hook, with only one having to be taken for a shore lunch in the last 5 years because of too much damage. I can understand how Manitoba makes this mandatory. I wish Ontario did as well.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  5 років тому

      Appreciate it! Doing this route with the Sand is 100% the way to go if you can shuttle. A lot more fun than doing the ports again on the way back, and it's supposed to be a wonderful section. Hope to see some drone footage after you go :)
      Great suggestion and I completely agree---I wish we would adopt Manitoba's regulations on hooks. On my to-do list for this winter is to cut all of my trebles to tandems and pinch the barbs. I already do both to some hooks, just not all, but healthy C&R is so important to me...I gotta do it. The fear is that it'll lose me a big fish given their power, but I take a lot from fish for my own pleasure so it's the least I can do. I've even considered lobbying the province for this, but that's a tall order.
