  • Do Different Grass Seed Varieties Matter?
    Yes, Different Grass Seed Varieties Matter...but when you enter the realm of the top performing varieties I personally cant see any difference. My test plot has 22 different varieties and it all looks the same. They all get taken care of the exact same way and they are all green and healthy.

      I only buy my seed from Pete now. I also buy it for my dad! I use the Blue Heat KBG and my back yard is small so I’m going to covert that to tall fescue and purchased another 45 pounder just for the
      Back! I want in on some of this TTF!!! Ha. I will still keep my front KBG! Best of both worlds.

    Hey Pete from Upstate NY. Much appreciated words. We all need to hear this message. I just ordered your Cool Blue/KGB yesterday and can’t wait to aerate/over-seed this fall. Looking forward to a lawn I can proud of. I have clumps of that kbg31, creeping fescue and annual rye and just not a fan; nothing but fungus issues. Pete, will i have good results with your seed “smoking out” these other varieties?

    Pete, just wanted to let you know I planted Cool Blue in the Spring. Wish I could post a photo here. Granted, it gets shade half the day which helps reduce heat stress, but it's still dark green and lush! Was a plot of my woods under pine trees that I renovated in March and seeded in Spring. The seed germinated within 7 days, and I was mowing in mid-May. I couldn't be be happier with it!

    Just wanted to pose the question, is it possible the over-seeding over the years had an effect on the overall look of the turf by diluting the original variety mixes. Now I could be wrong and the varieties are undistinguishable from each other in any noticeable way, but it got me thinking when you mentioned over-seeding with the GCI turf blend and the plot has been around for 8+ years.

    My mind interprets “GCI Turf” as a company that not only does the maintenance aspect of lawn care but also takes a literal grass roots “science, research and treatments” approach into growing a healthy and beautiful lawn. And that is exactly what you do, even going as far as proving the naysayers wrong with your test plots. Proof is in the pudding, as they say. God Bless you and family.

    My lawn has tall fescue and zoysia, mostly fescue. The fescue is a mix of Pennington Rebels and Barenbrug Watersaver. My lawn is mowed properly, fertilized and watered when I can. My lawn survives heat and drought better than all of my neighbors lawns, I do water on the weekends and during the week if I have time. The Watersaver actually spreads with rhizomes, It spreads into my garden beds all of the time and repairs it self if there's damage

    Pete, you mentioned that you planted the Water Saver TTTF in one of your test plots. I also have this variety exclusively in my yard. One section of my yard looks awesome but the other does not. The blades of grass are yellow as if the grass is not absorbing nutrients. I did a soil test on this poorly growing section. This is a new construction lawn and the soil test came back with higher phosphorus levels. Everything else is perfect. Do you have any product suggestions that I should be using that can help with the grass color and to lower the phosphorus level? When I put down iron along with fertilizer it helps with the color but it’s only temporary and I think it’s only masking the issues. Thank you for everything you do for the community.

    There is a big test going on and they have tests all around the country and publish grass seed ratings.... That is how I found my grass seed for Virginia , near DC. Closest test was Landover Maryland. If I saw the GCI seed I probably would have bought his because it was much cheaper and really good. Yes seed matters. Make sure you get 0% weeds as the bag will say the weed %

  • @toddfromflorida

    I imagine you cant see differences because you have overseeded for the last 8 years. I dont recall you saying you continued putting down the 5 different types of seed like when you first planted it.
    I say that but I am assuming you have overseeded that area like you do your main yard.

    • @davidhensel7666
      @davidhensel7666 3 роки тому

      Exactly. Those plots probably received a 10lbs/1000 seeding of the different blends 8-9 years ago and then 5-8lbs/1000 overseed of CGI TTTF for the next 7-8 years. That's 40-64lbs/1000 total of CGI seed vs 10lbs/1000 of the different blends. Of course they are going to look the same now.

  • @cbrown6755
    @cbrown6755 3 роки тому

    Pete, had you continued to overseed with the 5 varieties, we would probably see a little color variation, but your point is well taken. The difference in a “quality” seed is slight. The years of overseeding with one variety has harmonized the test plot, but section 3’s color is noticeably better at close range imho.
