I have a well and also 1.5 acres in Central PA. How would you handle keeping Cool Blue watered? Not sure I want to spring for an irrigation system for that much lawn. Maybe the answer is TTTF..
it does help brother
spot on with the city water and well water. Changed my mind on how to proceed with seed selection
What's the difference between cool blue and SPF-30 hybrid?
Appreciate this video. I reside in Nashville so the summers are crazy. I do like the idea of both. I've inquired in the past about mixing TF and KB. I hear KB repairs spots. I plan to grab a bag this fall. What size bag do recommend for 5000 sq ft lawn?
Great video your yard looks great. Thanks for all the tips. It really will it cost you even more due to the drought in Georgia especially the north part it’s been weeks and months since we got any rain more than a couple hours. Thanks.
I’m glad that Pete/GCI switched to the Mountain View seeds TTTF varieties that spreads and requires less water (A-list varieties), I’ve been using Mountain View seeds for 6 or 7 years and it really is the best seed that I’ve ever used. (I live in the transition zone in VA and have little to no irrigation (above ground/water hose sprinklers).)
Live in Charlotte, what type of non-liquid fertilizer would you recommend?
Protene is a slow release 90 day fert that’s wonderful. Will keep it green til Thanksgiving
The blue goes dormant, doesn't it. It doesn't die. Just goes dormant.
Depends on how long it goes without water I do believe!
Is this for the new blends? I went to buy some and it changed from when I looked at it earlier in the summer. It now has "blue tag" and "A List" seed cultivators. I will be trying out the grass seed this fall.
He put out an email about his seed changing. It’s never been blue tag certified, but I believe it will be going forward? Also the new blend, I do believe, will include spreading fescue cultivars. I’m sure he will or has a video on it at GCI Turf.
Toooooooo much talking...got to go...bye
✌🏻
😂
Love your videos ! I’m a new subscriber! I was considering triple threat, GCI TTTF or even Jonathan green black beauty (for the variety and I’ve admired the spreading tendencies of KBG- but am not patient enough or attentive enough for its high needs lol). Currently have a mix of fine fescue and tall fescue, maybe some blue mixed in? What would you recommend for most cost effective as well?
Thanks Wes. Not sure really. That’s all up to you, your budget and preference. Can’t go wrong with Jonathan Green or GCI but there are other options too. Best of luck and thanks for watching Wes!
I have hard soil and full sun what type of grass should I use I live in central California
The GCI turf type tall fescue does great in full sun, and I would continuously hit the soil with humic acid to soften it over time. Aeration with core aerator every 3-4 years to loosen it. If you don’t, roots won’t be able to dig in deep.
What is Best for summer heat? Stress. I want to avoid watering due to water bill gets out of control. Thanks
I would look at Jonathan Green Heat & Drought. I think it’s fescue and Texas bluegrass. I’ll have a link for it Monday in that video.
@@MrFergusonLawn ok good. Thanks
Does anyone have alternative suggestions to GCI Tall Fescue? I saw some Elite Tall Fescue Pennington seed at the sod store (Super Sod) . Curious if there are others as good for around the same price.
JG Black Beauty is a great seed.
I’ve had success with the blends from Twin City Seed. Elite cultivars and a bit cheaper than GCI. They regularly have sales too.
@@brettarias7 I actually ordered seed from heritage - Artimus Tall Fescue blend and I must say it is the best seed I have ever used.
Man my first season of growing a lawn, I did Jonathan green ultra black beauty (which is a TTTF and KB blend) and it looked amazing but I had no how much water it needed and I lost a lot of it my first year and I’m not even on city water I just didn’t know how much water was needed
Yep, it take a ton for that kbg. More than I am willing to give it.
Great video
Thanks as always!
I must say this iam in NJ and this season I've started using next bio stim package and I have not once watered my lawn this summer except for the light watering it gets when applying product and my lawn hasnt turned brown at all ...
Awesome!!
Cool blue in my yard and just did my front in cool blue.....I slay the neighborhood in lawn domination!! Lol 🤙🏼🌱👑
My seed is a Mountain View seed mix with a few TTTF ,s and Texas Bluegrass. Im sticking with the Southern Belle Brand , It worked so well in the renovation last year. Time to spice it up a lil and try this blend.
Awesome Rob. I have a very small amount of the TX bluegrass in my lawn from that JG solar green, nothing I can pick out.
@@MrFergusonLawn gotcha , going to try brother , we need a rain dance live feed lol
Hey mr.ferguson, quick question, some one asked me today and I couldn't answer the question, so here I am, what are your thoughts on mixing some gci tttf with some Johnathan Green black beauty for some over seeding in a few weeks,
I mean you can do what you want, but I wouldn’t do it. It’s a different green between the two brands. It not be as noticeable mixing it, but I can definitely tell a difference in green color from each. If you are good with it, go for it, but sounds like it could be a pricy mix too.
I can attest to Jonathan Green Black Beauty being noticeably different. The blade is much thinner than typical TTTF and struggled this summer in Charlotte, NC. I had major plumbing work and they tore up my entire front lawn. Had to try something….
This GCI seed is also expensive.
2 years ago I paid 10.85 a pound canadian for kbg. Barenbrug
point being? that seems high!!! like Criminal High!!! Hell my 40 # bag was $116 just yesterday Why so much ?
@robturner7853 no idea. I drove to speare seeds and bought the 50 pound bag.
@robturner7853 my point is .....Mr. Ferguson was talking about cost of seed. I wanted to let him know what it was like in Ontario, Canada for elite seed.
@@terrykeith5206 gotcha !!! that just sounded very high so I had to ask.... hope those prices have come down for you. Oh and good luck on the lawn ...Have a great day Terry
And I failed to realize you said canadian and I have no idea what that would be in US currency.
Dont forget that lowes and home depot will sell you seed even if the dates are expired. Not only should you look at the weed seed and other crop percentage look at the dates
Good point
I’ve always wanted to try Pete’s grass seed. I use what’s called TLC fescue which also has spreading capability’s which I can’t really tell if it does. Be cool if you good do a video comparing them
Good video. I'm not sure if the price is worth it or not. I live about 100 miles south of Pete. I've tried Pennington Rebels TTTF, Defiance XRE TTTF and FIVE STAR TTTF. Like you said in NC it takes a lot of water. I live in the country south of Mount Gilead but my well isn't sufficient to use for irrigation. I currently have a mix of TTTF, fine fescue, dallisgrass and other weeds. It's a hard choice of what seed to buy especially due to water costs at $8/1000 gallons and it takes about 6000 gallons to equal 1" rainfall.
Absolutely Ronnie. Thank you for watching and commenting sir!
@@MrFergusonLawn I mistated the number of gallons. It's about 6500 gallons per 1/4 acre.
I tried that Cool Blue and to be honest, didn't like it. Aside from the slow germination of the Kentucky Blue Grass it is not heat tolerant and does poorly in shade areas as well as needs a ton of water because of the shallow roots. It didn't do well here in CT. Was hoping to give Pete more business.
Even my TTTF don’t do fantastic in the shade. That’s why I used a shade mix in those areas. Glad I did. I hear you though, all points I laid out in the video haha.
MR.Ferg guzzles those orange monsters 😅 love your vids buddy
I’m slowly decreasing them…slowly. Thanks man!
I wouldn't use either honestly. I like GCI but when it comes to their grass seed it's high price for average seed. Heritage offers superior grass seed.
@I3arbarian, I've heard of a lot of grass seed but I've never heard of the Heritage you speak of. Do you have personal experience with this seed?
And that's why I said this is a choice for each homeowner to make based on many different factors. This isn't a "you must use this seed" video. It's a comparison video. Saying another brand is superior would be an opinion as well, which will vary per customer. Thanks for the comment!
@@johnnybocchetti6196 I have experience with Artimuss. It is a blend with 4 high ranking NTEP cultivars from Mountain View Seeds. There is also a blend with some KBG.
@johnnybocchetti6196 it's the scotts tttf brand
@@kenmunger6110 Thanks Ken. I have used Scott's products but I've never used their grass seed.
Ive used both - thick and lush dark green not a weed in sight anywhere - using the cool blue now for the partial KBG spreading helps a bit , will never use anything else .
Have a great one my friend. Thanks for commenting!
@@MrFergusonLawn 👍🏻👍🏻
Buying the cool blue RIGHT NOW
I used the cool blue very happy
I haven't heard of anyone being disappointed with it yet. It's a great product.
15 percent by weight, the the cool blue, but more like 50-50 in actual seeds because fescue seeds are larger
Yea the seed size is definitely different
This makes sense because there is A LOT of KBG in my cool blue back yard!
Love the content!! Great video!
Thanks, good to hear people enjoy it!
If I lived close to you I'd give you my bag of Spreader Elite since I'm in the process of converting the lawn to Bermuda/Zoysia.
I appreciate it Neal, but hoping I don't need it this fall
@@MrFergusonLawn Yeah, same! I bought a big bag last year thinking I'd need it but.... here we are! I may dump it in a neighbors yard just for fun.
It's too rich for my blood, Mr Ferg. I use Pennington Rebel seeds, and I just kill the weeds that pop up. One day maybe🤞🏾
Completely understand that, and excellent point. There are other priorities than lawn care, that is for sure. You are just fine to do as you said, kill the weeds later on. Definitely don't want to insist that you can't have a nice lawn without this particular seed. Not true at all.
Good video bud. 💪🏼
God Bless You And Family ,Looking Good As Always Fred Latimore Apex NC
Thanks Fred, enjoy your Wednesday sir!
I use spreader elite exclusively. Amazing seed. Produces amazing turf.
That it is sir!
I'll have to say the cool blue pops... If you want to dominate from Fall to the first of summer that's the way to go. Happy Wednesday everyone.
Agree!
@davidcrowson4745 You said,"If you want to dominate from Fall to the first of summer that's the way to go". What about AFTER the first of Summer? What about mid to late summer heat? Does it thin out? I have an area under Pecan trees (shade) that I grow TTTF . It always thins out in mid to late summer.
