It’s not as robust, but this functionality is built into Catalina now by default. Drag to left or right side will split the app to half the window. Drag to top will full screen it

Keeps me from having to minimize every screen when I need to find a particular window.
hot corners for sure, tpL desktop, btL display to sleep, tpR launch pad. btR Mission Control. Dark mode, 3 finger drag, reverse scroll, turn on scroll lines always, shut off the auto sync for doc n desktop, I do not like stacks can not get use to it, mine seems more messed up, if I stack my desk top I can't find crap.
It's not just tap to click that is essential for an awesome experience with simple dragging... You also have to go into Accessibility and check off these two things (it's night and day with dragging and making the trackpad super awesome). Check Enable Dragging "without drag lock" and also choose Scrolling "with inertia" under Accessibility. These things make a world of difference and I'm not sure why they are buried in Accessibility. It makes dragging windows effortlessly and pleasant. I can't stand it any other way.
I would advise against this if you use tap to click, because it introduces a very noticeable delay to the click. Your MacBook waits for a split-second to see if you'll tap again, thus delaying the click. Instead you could use three finger dragging which doesn't have the same issue.

Easy access to all applications! Im big into folder management, making hierarchies in the file system. I always enable drag with three fingers on the trackpad. It used to be in the Trackpad Settings but a few years ago it switched to the Accessibility Settings. It's so much more convenient to move windows and other things around with three fingers on the trackpad than clicking with one finger and dragging with another finger.
First thing is enable three finger drag. This enables the ability to drag and drop without actually clicking on the trackpad. I love it. Preferences>accessibility>track pad> enable drag.

For you Vets there is a 10% discount. I only paid $1619.00 for mine. After close to 30 years using a PC, its great finding these tips. They are really helpful.
Thanks for this video! I want to acknowledge some people’s first Macs may not be from Apple and are purchased secondhand. I don’t recommend the first thing they do is download updates. Some older Macs-which will work great for some users-may have a recommendation to update to the next OS and the computer works better sticking with the previous. In those instances, it’s helpful to do a little internet research on what users are saying before updating.
One of the first things I enable is three finger drag to move windows with a trackpad. The three-finger drag option is hidden in System Preferences > Accessibility. Click the Trackpad Options button at the bottom of the Accessibility window on Pointer Control. In the pop-up window, check the box for Enable dragging and choose three finger drag from the pull-down menu.

The macOS app TextSniper has been added to my list of must-have apps. So far this is my top app of the year. Now I can instantly copy any text from my Mac's screen and it is super useful. I recommend to try it.
Shift is my first mac app install. I can have all my emails, Google apps, Dropbox, Slack and Trello all in one place without ever having to open up another app. It’s life changing.
One thing I do beside (most) of these things you showed is activating right bottom hot corner for screen standby. I use this very often to turn off the screen with a swipe.
One thing I like about macos is Hot Corners. The lower right corner reveals the desktop (Windows' only feature I really miss, hence the placement), the upper left activates Application Windows.
Out of curiosity, why turn Desktop syncing off? I think it's extremely useful. I can access my Desktop files even when I'm not on my Mac. I sync with other Macs plus I can access them via my iPhone. As a bonus, I don't have to worry about losing my files.
Thanks Tyler, great tips. I have done 95% of your tips already and you gave me comfort of other like minded and organised mac users :-) One other thing I tend to do is set the views of all the folders on my drives (cloud & local). View > CMD+J > Always open in List View & Browse in list view, Arrange by : Modified, Sort by : Added, Then tick all the check boxes, Click Use as default. Reason i do this is that when you see your files, these are always shown by date accessed and you never loose the file and stop thinking "when did i make this file" or "Where did i store this file". :-)

Better still, I use Hazel to do this all for me automatically. As I don't show any system icons on the desktop (like drives etc.) this keeps the desktop nice and clear.

It's 2022 and I just picked up the early 2015 mac air due to budget reasons- did my research and people are still raving about this version of the Mac but I'm wondering, will these tips be helpful for me? I used to have an iPhone back in 2015 but I went to android afterwards and I can't access my old Hotmail or apple account cause I also changed phone number, kinda gutted lol 🙃
As a first-time Mac user, I did find the tips sometimes went too quickly and assumed I knew more than I do. The video is jam-packed, but I will have to pause and listen over and over to find some of these things to change. Just a tad slower would be helpful. Thanks for your work.
Perfect time for my new Macbook Air. Thank you! Just had to buy new Mac as my only computer bought since 2008, the first generation on Macbook Aluminium case with DVD-Writer! It's still running well.. let's see how long this Macbook Air will lasts..
I like the tip about cleaning out your dock to just stuff you use often. They can always be found in the launchpad if you need them. One thing that bugs me (as I only got a Mac this year) is not having a quick calendar preview like Windows does where the date and time is.
I have been copying and evolving my .bashrc file for over 25 years now, along with a small bag of useful shell scripts. It's in the top 5 things I copy over to any new computer. Blender, VLC, and XCode are the first few apps I will install. Lately Darkroom and Affinity share my attention for raw image processing.
iI personally always turn on the three fingers drag for the trackpad: Accessibility / Trackpad Options button / Enable dragging -> three finger drag. You will never turn it off after you start using. great finger stress relief
That's counter intuitive in the smartphone era, I believe. I think of it as dragging text on a screen but on your track pad instead, just like you would on your phone.
There's an app that increases my magic mouse sensitivity. The iMac screen is too big for the max sensitivity that apple has set. It also lets you make custom gestures for different apps (and custom universal gestures). Really can't remember what it's called (my iMac has been sent back as it was faulty) Comments about safari were interesting, I might look into using it more often
New mac user here so.. thank you for the video! Also at 04:05, I see that you have CaptureOne, Luminar and other other non-adobe software. Can you made a video on what you would recommend from these? Thanks!

Better still, I use Hazel to do this all for me automatically. As I don't show any system icons on the desktop (like drives etc.) this keeps the desktop nice and clear.
About to get my first Mac so this was really helpful!
Why do you prefer a 3rd part password manager instead of apple keychain?
Installing Homebrew has to be the first.
And Cask for Desktop applications
TheRapDistrict But this is a part of it.
Can someone explain to me what homebrew does? I’m a noob lol
@Yochem 2311 Thank you! :)
@Yochem 2311 can i also download Microsoft office like word, powerpoint?
Thanks, you could slow down a bit for us oldtimers/first timers, but very helpful. Bought my Mac at Costco with Apple Care plus...but do I have to activate that or is it automatic somehow ?
its automatic and tied to the serial number of your device. I just bought a Macbook with AppleCare+ as well.
Great tips!
Stacks was a revelation to me! Thank you!
As a first-time Mac user, I did find the tips sometimes went too quickly and assumed I knew more than I do. The video is jam-packed, but I will have to pause and listen over and over to find some of these things to change. Just a tad slower would be helpful. Thanks for your work.
Sitting here and watching videos of macbboks in anticipation of mine finally arriving. Thanks to Corona that´ll take a wile.
Awesome video I always come back to your video when I get a new Mac. You should do an updated video
Its crazy, you Mac is pretty much set up exactly like mines lol except for the dock placement, I put mines on the left
You can edit widgets panel and add calender widget. Get widget panel by swiping with two fingers from right of trackpad.
@@ankita3081 I did not know that. THANK YOU! Just added it. :D
I have used Mac for years and most of these tips were new to me and very useful. Thanks!
Literally the first thing I do after disabling iCloud sync is installing iTerm and homebrew :)
Last time i was this early the macbook air didnt even exisit
iI personally always turn on the three fingers drag for the trackpad: Accessibility / Trackpad Options button / Enable dragging -> three finger drag. You will never turn it off after you start using. great finger stress relief
For me is removing "natural" scrolling on trackpad...if I move my fingers down, I want the page to go down.
Blasphemy4kidz agreeee it drives me insane!
I like the natural scrolling. Maybe i'm just used to it. I see why it would make more sense to turn it off tho.
That's counter intuitive in the smartphone era, I believe. I think of it as dragging text on a screen but on your track pad instead, just like you would on your phone.
When I use the iMac at school, the first thing to do is to uncheck the natural mode & the tracking speed in the System Preferences. Thank you. 8)
The first thing I always change is to show Macintosh HD on the desktop along with any external drives and servers
Oh yeah that’s a good one, like the olden days. I don’t think they should have hidden them
How did you move the apps to the right side of the screen. Whewww you are quick for 1st time users
Thank you.
There's an app that increases my magic mouse sensitivity. The iMac screen is too big for the max sensitivity that apple has set. It also lets you make custom gestures for different apps (and custom universal gestures). Really can't remember what it's called (my iMac has been sent back as it was faulty)
Comments about safari were interesting, I might look into using it more often
How again do I move things from the dock if I don’t use often? You were going kind of fast on that part. But I so need to do it. Please and thank you.
The first thing I do is to add the volume icon on the top bar to easily connect my airpods
This +1
How do you add it?
System preferences/Sound/Click show volume in menu bar 👍🏼 (I just did it)
I don’t even use a Mac but always enjoy watching your videos man. Good stuff!
New mac user here so.. thank you for the video! Also at 04:05, I see that you have CaptureOne, Luminar and other other non-adobe software. Can you made a video on what you would recommend from these? Thanks!
just bought a new macbook pro and thanks Tyler - great help. But how do I get the Mac HD icon on the desktop??? I.m lost without that
Forget that... I've found it!!!
1st thing: Go to Starbucks...
Lol legit
No kidding😂👍
then grow a beard, wear circular glasses and a denim jacket and you are set for life!
Second thing, realise your mistake and then go find a decent cup of coffee in an independent cafe!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 so true
i need help.
since I was a kid, i used windows as my main os for anything like schoolwork or movies or web browsing.
now that macs are more known to me, i was a real big problem to deal with.
i program in python and maybe more languages when i go to college, watch movies or browse web usually.
right now I'm stuck that what laptop I shall pick?
a 13-inch MacBook pro?
a 13-inch razer blade?
a 15-inch razer blade?
Dell xps 13?
Dell xps 15?
This is (a) gold and (b) perfect timing as I've just ordered a new MacBook Pro :-) Thanks Tyler!!
Thank You for the scrollbar tip! Out of curiosity...how do they want you to scroll without it?
Tyler, thank you, thank you-for this helpful video. Priceless stuff! 💛😎
Thumbs up for the clean my Mac sponsorship and plug! I am a first gen CMM user.
Automatically hide my dock and changing the select colour to green instead of the standard blue are two things I always have to do when setting up a new Mac... I don’t know why...
yes. and i change the show the dock timine in terminal, so its super quick and super clean
Laurens Klep the color green is more visible to the human eye
@@jeffstropky8914 That's a fair point
Having a clean slate is so nice
