You are 100% correct about using Jazz to get better. I can play pretty much every genres of music but totally suck at jazz. And most jazz drummers I've met can really play any genre of music. Maybe you should do an intro to Jazz drumming video because I love your teaching Style. After 25 years of drumming I feel as if my drumming has gotten stale, so I've been trying to reinvent myself and your videos are certainly helping. Thank you mr. Beatdown👍

Thank you for sharing your love for drumming. I’m an educator and do for fitness what you do for drumming - make it SIMPLE!! I never played traditional grip and have always envied that nasty left hand of the greats. So - now that I’m 60 - I’m back to learning things I never spend time on - my rudiments! For the first two months of my journey back - nothing but left hand and boy what a difference that’s made already. I always have sticks with me, EVERYWHERE!!! Whether it’s a 5 minute ride in the car, time watching news on TV, or I have one hour to practice, it’s basics EVERYDAY!
I’m not even buying my electric set until I have my rudiments down solid - smooth light single and double rolls, funky triplets, paradiddles, etc. My drum kit is my reward for developing HANDS!! My ultimate goal is a left handed, traditional grip, single hand roll!
Man - if you could do something on that I would (and think others as well) would appreciate it. Keep up the great work and thank you!

Man thank you so much. I am a veteran musician from 1980. Started in 5th grade band a as Trumpet player. Played in the sky ryder Drum and Bugle corp in 87 and 88 on a 2 valve G bore bugle. Put myself thru college where I started singing as a weekend warrior vocalist. Played in the corp with many great drummers like Chad Sexton, Mickey Hartzog, Jason Sutter. I started taking drum lessons in 2005 for about 6 months and loved it until my instructor suddenly quit and I never went back. Now I find myself behind the kit again. I cant stay away from it. I practice about 4 to 5 hours a day in my recording studio and I absolutely love the kit. I have been struggling as a beginner and it is tough, but videos like these keep me going. Thanks for the inspiration and I absolutely love the channel. I will be buying some swag as soon as I get some coin. Man thanks again today has been a bitch studying some of your exercises and the book stick control, about to play along to some tunes. Thru my sticks a couple times today but saw this video and I feel lots better thanks again and thanks for listening to me vent. Peace

Mr Brown you're the best teacher here!! I Hated Jazz during my college days, but got to experience a director who was ALMOST as bad as the Whiplash director!! I thought I was great, but in my adult years I know how wrong I was. Now I actually wish I would have taken the time to get back to basics and slow down!!! in practice. I was into Hard rock and Dance music, still am. also DJ Scratching this all applies. My suggestions from an Ark hick drummer AKA DJJetfuel, 1 METROKNOME!!! hic spelling. In the pocket is a KEY thing. 2SLOW SLOWER AND precision before speed. I'm stuck on the friggin 1st Basic DJ scratch used in herbie handcock "Rockit!" it's so simple but... yea One DJ friend told me, People don't care! just play music. That's not my goal. If I woulda put serious "Perfect practice" into this in 1986! I woulda been hot. but nope... 3 practice does NOT make perfect.. Perfect practice makes perfect. Learn to practice!! Basics. Timing, Sticking. The Pocket. With UA-cam I can do 2 years worth of lessons, 1/2 hr once a week, in a day with help from YouGuys!! I never was prepared for lessons.. 4 Get Smoked!! by someone better... Yep its painful but Humble is good! I'd rather have a pos 4 piece kit and play circles around someone with a big expensive DW etc kit... no offence. haha 5 Record yourself! I still don't have youtube videos up because I still can't quite get outta the suck zone. I have a great resume, I played Madison Square Garden once. Basketball game NIT championship 1986 87' Played live with Aerto Morrera, Jack Dejonette, Bill Clinton, Done DJ scratch battles and drummoffs at guitar center. ^ Enter Contests... Get smoked!! best lessons ever! My goal today is to play breakbeat techno with TTAble as a center instrument ALL electric with percussion ensemble form. I'm not impressed with a DJ turning knobs to pre done tracks, I wanna see y'all Beatin on shit!! Tell me who said that first! on a record! Hint WHAT .... IS IT! My college teachers were super bebop jazz Art Blakey type, Saw him live in NY. in 86. Hated it, But now!!! oh I understand!! My idea of music was Methods of Mayhem and Depesche Mode in those days. I need disciplin, ARk skools and structure to reach my goals. I've been chasing the same idea for 25 years and still not there. Im 53 and want to be known as on Funky MF. I have a hard time working with others and need to work on that. Not many decent players understand the Dancefloor like I do. My ideas are very Visual like STOMP, or Jamaican type beats with a super hard electric edge! Thanks for your service Man I hope to meet ya someday! 1 more tip Play outta your comfort zone! If ya ain't messin up ever, You ain't doin nothin!

Solid advice. I've been playing for 27 years, and this is truly golden. For a number #6, I would say practice playing backwards. At one point when I wasn't in a band and had hit a wall in my abilities, I flipped my kit around completely with my left foot playing bass drum and the hi hat on my right side where I would use my left hand to carry the rhythm on the hi hat or ride. It was super humbling. It was like learning to play when I first got behind the kit. After a few months, I got up to a basic level of playing when I got back into another band, a man did my playing skyrocket when I flipped everything back. Speed and independence through the roof. #7 is to play live. I started playing live way before I had any business getting on a stage, and man did that push me like nothing else to improve.

“Play along to difficult music.” YES.
I always tell drummers to get into The Mars Volta.
The music is physically demanding , its got hard rock, latin, avant garde jazz, funk, eratic and odd time sigs, etc etc. Playing along to that really pushes you as a drummer and just inherently makes you better.
P.S. You’re the man, Rob. Keep puttin out great stuff. 🤘🏼

Hey, another nurturing and tip laden find, thanks Rob. I am thoroughly enjoying your channel and in particular working on my right hand index and middle fingers in precisely the way you advise for stick control. In particular focusing on quiet relaxed ghost note syncopations is really starting to take out some of the heaviness in my playing. MY TIP would be ultra slow practice. Start with the metronome as slow as you can comfortably play a tricky passage and loop it. When comfortable start to go DOWN in tempo a few bpm and repeat. Things get REAL instructive at about seventeen BPM and an awful lot of confusion disappears and with it difficulty.

I think this carried over from when I played guitar (didn't start drums till I was 27). I figure ingest all the music you can and REALLY listen to it. You'll find stuff in pop songs you didn't think had wild parts in it. For example, Journey's song Seperate Ways there's a little hi hat pattern Steve is doing with his left foot while banging that rhythm on the toms and bass drum. In Toto's Goodbye Eleanor, Jeff has this aggressive bass drum pattern going on as that song just rocks along. Not to mention just listen to Spectrum, Yes/King Crimson with Bill Bruford or Phil Collins work on Robert Plant's solo albums where he played some tasty stuff as well as Brand X. Missing Person's with Bozzio has great parts on those new wave pop tunes.

Huh, I seem to have combined point #3 and #4 inadvertently in my own practice; most of the music I’ve been playing to has been extremely challenging. A lot of Hella in particular; very difficult stuff but rewarding as hell when I finally nail it.

Additional Tip... learn to play another instrument other than the drums. It expands one's musical awareness, which is absolutely applicable to how one plays the drums. Primarily, you should think of yourself not as a drummer but as a musician who expresses themselves through one or more instruments. It's really not about the drums but about you as a human being. That's what comes out in the playing of the great drummers (Rob being one of them) we admire and love. The drums are just a vehicle to express themselves in a particular context. It's okay, of course to play only one instrument but, it will only make you a better musician/drummer if you learn to play some bass or some piano or even guitar or sing or...
