It's CRAZY that you posted this because I just stumbled across the SAME thing recently. A little background: I am a partially self-taught drummer (got basic lessons when I first started but most of my journey over the past 20ish years has been having to learn on my own). I used to play gigs on the weekends but ran into a huge problem: I would play a 4 hour gig Fri and a double (5 hour gig followed by a 4 hour one) on Sat, then every other Sun I would play a 3 hour gig as well. By the time I was done with the weekend, it took the whole week to recover my hands and feet to play again. This stunted my ability to practice outside of the gigs (my "Practice" would usually consist of listening to songs but not playing them). It got better over a long period of time but never great. As I've taken time away from playing gigs, I went to practicing on the pad for endurance. At first, I was just trying to play at full volume to build my chops and was hitting a wall around 5 min. Recently, I came to the same conclusion and started focusing on getting through the whole 20 min practice session relaxed and loose rather than trying to play at full volume. The ironic thing, is in just a few weeks I was able to play the full 20 min at full volume but completely loose. The next time I went to the kit it was an UNBELIEVABLE difference! So TLDR: Try this exercise, I'm a living example that it works!

Funny this video came up in my feed today. Yesterday I was trying to play radar Love and the little snare hits kept throwing me off until I started playing them really softly and then all the sudden I was nailing them. You definitely lose control when you try to play harder, I also find that I even get pain in my wrist sometimes because I'm gripping the stick too hard

Thanks again, for another stepping stone in our path to becoming better drummers. I have followed you from the beginning of my road, for two years now. I wish I could sit down and REALLY practice all of the lessons you’ve provided. I usually get the jist and then tear off into a song. I still appreciate every video you provide, and take in the wisdom you provide.

Perfect timing for this video. Just starting to learn Plug in Baby by Muse. Not a complicated song but quite loud and relatively fast for me. Trying to play fast, loud eighths is really hurting my hand. Will practice it at a lower volume and slowly increase it to see if it helps. Thanks for another great video.

Well, that was crazy. Getting older (probably the oldest drummer here) and I believe I was overcompensating by hitting the drums too hard. It was exhausting. Watched this video and, wa-la, I played well. I applied deep breathing exercises throughout my 35-year public relations career (I'm retired) and it didn't occur to me to use the same exercise in my drumming. I spent 15 minutes playing softly before starting. But the older I get the more challenging drumming becomes. Got any other tips for older drummers? Thanks for a very useful video. Most aren't. BTW, I started at age 65 and played in public as a substitute about 25 times. I took lessons for three years before a medical issue hit a family member.

Success depends on the actions or steps you take to achieve it. Building wealth involves developing good habits, such as regularly setting aside money for sound investments.

Hi Stephen, always enjoy the videos. I don't know whether you already have anything on this subject, but one thing I'm not really sure I'm doing correctly is setting up my kit, getting everything at the right hight for me. Do you have any tips on this? Thanks in advance.

  • @jeremyschneider9531

Interesting thoughts about keeping the same motion / stick height while pulling back the volume. Usually it's taught to reduce stick height to reduce volume. But that's not possible when moving quickly around the kit. Thanks!

Hello, I am working with a 70 metronome. How long should it take and how much should I increase the metronome? Do you recommend how many metronomes should I increase each day?

  • @juhapeltola8232

Why not to practise to hit drums harder like virgil on his power drumming? You eventually improve your stamina when actually play drums harder.
