  • I picked up this old wooden mallet at a house clean out. I thought they were having an estate sale, but after picking up a few things the folks there said they were just trying to clean up and there was no charge. The Disston No. 12 saw I did a restoration video for a while ago, came from the same place.
I picked this mallet up with the intention of fixing it, but I've had it for a while. Overall, it was a pretty easy fix but it took a little longer than I originally anticipated. It was was fun though!

I love the video. However as I'm ageing I have extreme difficulty reading your comments at the bottom of the screen because of the colours could you just use black?

Thanks PB, I've used the color to try and create more contrast with the background, but maybe I can find a way to put the text on a strip of contrast so its easier to read, that way I can stick with black. I'll give it a try and see what I can do in future videos. -Philo

A lathe would have even faster and have better results. Just saying ,but you did a great job

FStP, I think you're right, and I have a lathe, but because my ability to hold stock on my lathe is limited, I probably would have had to glue scraps on each end, and then cut them off after the tuning. After thinking about it, this way seemed easier and a little more fun. Thanks!

I like the 2 tone effect of the new v's old wood - it makes it unique and stylish.

I can't argue with that, I think it looks cool as well, but It may eventually get to be a similar color. Thanks!

Nice job, but why not turn down on lath, easier to do, and more precise……

Thanks Ken, I thought about it, and if this fix fails, I'll turn a new one. My lathe is small, so I would have to glue on some sacrificial ends and then remove them, and I was interested in keeping the worn faces.

Beautiful piece… the contrasting colors give character… ( new sub)

The UA-cam powers that be suggested your channel, and I like it. That looks like white oak to me too. If this mallet is ever going to be used again for its intended purpose, will the glue hold the new piece? I was thinking you were going to drill and dowel it in place.

Thanks AJ, in the end I was pretty convinced it was white oak too, which is what I used. The mallet has been working well so far, but it was a close call whether I was going to chuck the whole head and remake it. It probably would have been quicker, as I could have done it all on the lathe. If it does break, I'll make a new head, but I wanted to try and save it.

@@moonlightsnowfall6734 You did a great job, regardless. The more I think about it, dowels really wouldn't do a lot, other than keep the piece in place, as its parts break apart. Still I do like the design.

Thank you everyone who took the time and watched this video, this is the first time a video of mine has reached 10,000 views! It was just 2 weeks ago that I thanked everyone who watched my Rekord Clamp restoration video when it was my first video to reach 500 views. Amazing! Thank you! Thanks for watching, commenting, and hitting the like and/or subscribe button! I'm glad you're here, and I want to know what you think. -Philo

Thanks, I think you're right. And I've been using it, and it's working well. Its bigger and heavier than the other one I made for myself a few years ago.

I am new subscriber to your channel.
Nice work, I like resturation channel and follow it. Nice caring of detailes good tools.
But I think glue its not fair enough to make strong.

      @moonlightsnowfall6734  2 роки тому

Thanks Farouk, and welcome! You may be right about the glue, but I have had good luck in the past. I made another wood mallet that is laminated with the same glue. You can see me using it at the 1:50 point of this video, so far that one hasn't broken. If it does break, I'll probably make a new head for the mallet.

@@moonlightsnowfall6734 My thought would have been to screw in several deep screws to hold the new wood firmly in place, then grind down the screw heads so that they would be flush with the wood. They'd perhaps augment the glue to give strength. Worth a thought if you wish to modify the job...

@@marklammas2465 Thanks. I was trying to keep it all wood in the restoration. That way if I have to cut into it in the future the screws won't be in the way. If the repair fails, I will turn a new head from firewood. So far, the glue is still holding.

@@moonlightsnowfall6734 Fair enough. I'm not a restorer, but ideas come to mind and should be shared. I suppose I am not a woody purist; I would restore something with the intention of using it rather than worrying about artistry or beauty; you have advanced skills, so remaking a head is no big deal to you. Nice work anyway; it's worth a subscription. Added.
