I also want to spend less on books. I buy around 80 a year (mostly thrifted, thankfully!), but I have over 170 on my physical tbr. Reading slower and more intentionally is a good goal, too!
I have the same e-reader goal. With the new election my stay in this country is up in the air so I’m going to try to work through my physical TBR and then stick to e-readers
Love your idea of enjoying a reading year that is richly deep and slow. Something I am still considering for the upcoming year. I also have so many books on my shelf that I would like to read...so that will be one of my biggest goals. One of the most out of the box goals for me is to lead a reading group for my kids and their friends, hopefully inspiring them all to love reading more. I have so many ideas, but I'm worried I will over commit and run out of time. So I need to build some REALISTIC plans on paper. Excited for the upcoming reading year!
yay for book goals! I love the slower pace you are thinking about! I need to sit down and type out my goals for next year and save them into my phone. If I write them down I tend to get sick of seeing the piece of paper laying around and throw it away 😛
I get that, I print them out and put my goals into the binder that I use each morning for my line a day. If it was just a loose piece of paper it wouldn't stand a chance.
So funny that we have several goals in common: reading slower & with more intention, reading more classics, and re-reading! I'm feeling hopeful that it's gonna be a great reading year!
Aw, a pigeon! We currently have a pigeon hanging around our yard (which is weird since pigeons don’t live out here, but whatever 😂) and she bizarrely hangs out with our wild quail group, lol. We’ve named her Persephone. Actually by buying ebooks the authors (indie ones especially) get more money as opposed to physical books which the “middle man” printing companies take most of. And I totally get the financial problems, I’m already buying less books too. 😩 You have such great goals! I hope you have figured out my goals for reading and writing by January and have a video up then!
I love these goals! I'm not always a big re-reader either (I only re-read 4 books this year). I'm looking forward to reading some of your poetry if you share it, but I completely understand it being hard to do so. That was the hardest part about my creative writing classes in college: having other people read and critique my work (even though I realize it's also very much necessary).
I use the library all the time! Unfortunately since our move the library system isn't as good as I'm used to but it's still decent! I get ebooks and physical books out each week!
I stopped buying books for years after listening to my husband complain about how heavy book boxes are since we had moved a few times in a short amount of time. But now that we've lived in our home for 4 years (in March!) and we've settled and nestled in pretty nicely, I find myself wanting to buy books because they're such beautiful works of art. I love seeing them stacked and shelved on my bookshelf. Admittedly, I'll pretty much only buy thrifted books though. All of that to say that years ago, I purchased a kindle so I would stop buying books and I love it! I use the Libby app and my library to check out books and have rarely ever purchased them for a while; maybe 1-2 a year for several years. Also, I'm really bad at watching tv and movies, too! I fall asleep easily and would rather be reading a book. Anyways, happy reading!
We just moved this year and I got rid of a lot of books prior to the move but still had a lot to move. 😬 Definitely was wishing I had a few less books during that time!
❤ I'm still working on getting my non classics books down and have read a few this year but keep adding more. I'm around 60ish now and have been hovering there all year. My classics have gotten read tho so that's a good thing. I don't make too many other reading goals because i feel too constrained when i have really embraced my mood reading this year.
I'm taking a few days off of work next week to do a little bit of a mental/spiritual reset and think about goals for the next year. I know I want to do a lot of rereading as well
I love all of your goals for the year! My word for 2025 is “quiet” and I plan to read Sarah Clarkson’s new book, Reclaiming Quiet to bring in the new year. I definitely want to read more intentionally and slowly as well and make it through quite a few classics. I’ve hosted a book club for the last 3 years and it’s so fun! We meet at a local restaurant once a month and rotate between fiction and non-fiction books. You’d be a great editor! And you should definitely share your poetry with the world 🤎 I started sharing mine on Pinterest and my website and I’m so glad I’ve put it out there even if they’re not perfect. You have a great year ahead of you 🙌🏼
Love these goals! I have gotten back into Storygraph this year after dropping it for a while, and I've been enjoying it. It doesn't have as much of a community aspect as Goodreads, but it's better in terms of stats and book information. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. I made a re-read list for the first time last year and am going to do it again next year. I never used to re-read but I find I do more as I get older, because I have forgotten books I read years ago. 😂😂
I want to be a rereader, too! I have this issue where I feel like I'm "wasting my time" when I could be reading new-to-me books, but I know that's silly. These are great goals!
Thank you for sharing your goals that are scary to you. It takes courage to do so. I will be praying for this. Sidenote, how have your headaches been? You mentioned in a video that after you cut out a couple things that you stopped having headaches. I hope that relief has continued. ❤️
Thanks Crystal! The headaches have been almost nonexistent! I've only had two since I've made the changes, so in the last month and a half to two months, definitely a record!
You totally can do it with reducing your physical tbr! I started out 2024 with about 30 and currently (not counting my stall stack of Shakespeare) have 3 waiting to be read. (I hit zero in November then bought a few more.) You read way more than me so you will probably meet your goal by summer!
I started out 2024 with over 200 books on my physical TBR and now I'm down to 31! Tons were unhauls and I think I'm done unhauling without at least trying the books but I'm excited to have made such a decrease this last year!
I like the idea of watching adaptations. Sometimes I accidentally watch mini series before the books because I like the genre for movies/TV. It gives me a bigger TBR, and it can be helpful for things like Classics where you may get lost in some of the languages.
I too am only reading books on my ereader this coming year! I’ve chosen the kobo because after years with the kindle, I’m Over it. Also, kindle (Amazon) encourages over consumption and I just don’t want that for myself in 2025.
I have many, many series I am in the middle of that I want to get as close to finished as possible next year, as well as read from my own shelves more, and doing a Disney themed reading challenge
I haven't worked out alk of my goals yet but reading more ebooks (I keep downloading them but then don't read them),a book ban except for books for my in person book clubs, and finishing series.
I was just thinking the other day how I want to read more for quality and not quantity this upcoming year. In the past few years, I've been obsessing more over the stats of my reading than the enjoyment of it! I would love if you'd share at some point your annotating process. I've always wanted to do this but have been so intimidated by it for some reason!
I just moved to e readers as well. I only buy books I absolutely love and will reread over and over again in my life and want to share with my kids. I used to have a ton of books for the sake of it but they become so unloved. I bought the kobo library colour and am enjoying it very much.
When I started watching your video, I was thinking you should be an editor. Maybe you can offer your services to those indie authors who are working on books and need feedback before publishing 🤔 Charge $100 (or however much you determine) to read through their book and provide suggestions on ways to improve the flow of the story or point out any holes that need to be filled in. And maybe part of that charge could also include doing an episode of marketing on your channel for their book?
I’ve started buying a lot more ebooks recently. The 99p deals are so hard to pass up when it’s a book I’m confident I’ll like and it’d be £10-15 if I bought the physical copy. I’ve actually been reading a lot more ebooks this year too - either my own or from Libby which I’m pleased about. I do love my physical books though and as I’m a big fantasy reader I’m now trying to keep that space on my shelves for those 5* series that I know I’ll reread.
My reading goals are 1) to read a book from a Korean or a Korean-American writer each month (cause I am studying Korean so I wanted more Immersion 😊) 2) read all the books I already chosen for the year 3) To start a reading journal where I could annotate them and review them, just for me 4) Read more Non Fiction, at least 1 book about Korea and 1 about a skill I would like to improve per month. 5) no a reading goal but I would like to stop watching so much UA-cam (mostly mindlessly scrolling on shorts) and choose to read more, or watch shows, movies Korean Dramas and UA-cam channels with more intention. In general be more mindful about what I consume. I think you could be a great editor and you shouldn't be afraid of showing your poetry. 😊 I wish you Good Luck to make all your goals realities. 🍀
My reading goal is just to read every night or bet my goodreads challenge. I am conpleting a degree in education so not huge goals as i read alot for study.
Just want to make a suggestion which might make your goals a bit more achievable and not so overwhelming. Make a list of book goals you'd like to achieve but have them in a way that you can read the same book and it would tick multiple boxes. For example here are some of my goals that could potentially tick multiple boxes: 10 nonfiction books 10 new (to me) authors 10 translated books 10 Award Winning Books 40 1001 books (I'm reading through the list) 70 books I already own This way I could read an award winning book from the 1001 list that I already own and tick off multiple boxes. The dopamine rush from seeing those little squares (It's in a bullet journal format) colored in is going to help build my motivation. I'm hearing a lot of really good ideas, but it still feels a little scattered (nothing wrong with that!) I highly suggest that you join a book club (or three) - especially of a fellow book tuber - to see which ones to like and which ones you don't like so that you can decide whether or not there really is a need for your own book club. Basically, the reasearch you do in other book clubs can poplulate a list of things that you are looking for in a book club or where you could fill in the gaps. I like your business ideas. Getting some good affiliate links are also a way to make a bit of money per video (for example, linking to a book you're talking about through a place you believe in where other people can shop for books in an ethical way. Hope this helps! I'm only offering because making and achieving goals is sort of my super power and I wanted to make some suggestions that might help you not feel so overwhelmed. Obviously, these are ways that work for me and I don't expect there to be a good one-size-fits-all.
There will definitely be some overlap in some of my goals, but certain ones I don't want to overlap in for various reasons. For instance, I'm going to have a list of books I want to re-read but they are not going to include the L.M. Montgomery books I'll already be re-reading, I want it to be outside that. I've joined a number of different book clubs before, this year I want to focus on meeting local people/readers so joining a book club from a BookTuber wouldn't help that goal. Thanks for your suggestion though.
I have been considering getting an e-reader/kindle myself but I'm not sure. I prefer physical and I find I'm more drawn to it but e-readers are very useful?
It's taken me years of trying to enjoy ebooks to get to the point where I feel like I can justify purchasing an e-reader but I still need to train myself to pick it up, it's not as easy as picking up a book but I think it's just a mental thing I need to get past.
Ive seen someone do online zoom book club for kids. They created great questions for kids. I would sign my kids up to a book club you run . She charged $20 per kid and it had a huge waiting list. If you do it at a good time for both hemispheres
I would like to have a goal where at least 1 of the books I purchase every month comes from Enclave, a small publisher, or a self-published author. I'm thinking about other goals. I'll have a video up eventually.

After moving and getting rid of a lot of books, I am leaning hard on my local libraries. If I LOVE a book then I will buy the book.

Girl! Library! I spend less than $30 a year on books and read around 60 every year. I don’t know if your library is as good but go support them.
I use the library all the time! Unfortunately since our move the library system isn't as good as I'm used to but it's still decent! I get ebooks and physical books out each week!

I really love StoryGraph for the graphs /charts and content warnings! I still use Goodreads though too because of the community there. ❤
I'm taking a few days off of work next week to do a little bit of a mental/spiritual reset and think about goals for the next year. I know I want to do a lot of rereading as well
That sounds like a wonderful break, Anne. I hope you have a restful time!

I totally missed the fact that Sarah Clarkson had released another book, I love the title, will definitely have to read that at some point.

Haha, yes, it's definitely easier to reread once one gets older!
Your goal videos are always inspiring. I love the words you chose for 2025 ❤
Thanks! Those words are making me excited to see what 2025 brings!
I would love to see Annotate with me video. I want to start annotating but not sure where to start or what to annotate.
Sweet!
I want to be a rereader, too! I have this issue where I feel like I'm "wasting my time" when I could be reading new-to-me books, but I know that's silly. These are great goals!
I often have that same issue with re-reads, I am going to try to retrain my brain for 2025.
I love the StoryGraph!
Thank you for sharing your goals that are scary to you. It takes courage to do so. I will be praying for this. Sidenote, how have your headaches been? You mentioned in a video that after you cut out a couple things that you stopped having headaches. I hope that relief has continued. ❤️

@@ChantelReadsAllDay yay! I am praising God for this wonderful news!
Yeah, there are so much we need to balance in life. I am on the same boat but not as well read as you do.
You totally can do it with reducing your physical tbr! I started out 2024 with about 30 and currently (not counting my stall stack of Shakespeare) have 3 waiting to be read. (I hit zero in November then bought a few more.) You read way more than me so you will probably meet your goal by summer!

Those are some fun goals!
Love these goals! Makes me want to make a list of re-reads as well! ❤
You totally should!
You inspired me to write out my reading goals for 2025!
Oh yay!
I haven't worked out alk of my goals yet but reading more ebooks (I keep downloading them but then don't read them),a book ban except for books for my in person book clubs, and finishing series.
Those are some good goals, Diana!

I'm looking forward to starting and sharing my Anne of Green Gables annotating!
@ChantelReadsAllDay ooh this will be great! I'm joining in on that read a long, so I may start annotating them as well!
I just moved to e readers as well. I only buy books I absolutely love and will reread over and over again in my life and want to share with my kids. I used to have a ton of books for the sake of it but they become so unloved. I bought the kobo library colour and am enjoying it very much.

Good job saying the scary things out loud 🎉 Editing and sharing poetry: go for it!
I’ve started buying a lot more ebooks recently. The 99p deals are so hard to pass up when it’s a book I’m confident I’ll like and it’d be £10-15 if I bought the physical copy. I wish you Good Luck to make all your goals realities. 🍀
My goal for 2025 is to stick to any goals I make. 😂 I have yet to make any except two, which is to unhaul some books and read more off my own shelves.
Hehe, I love it!
My reading goal is just to read every night or bet my goodreads challenge. I am conpleting a degree in education so not huge goals as i read alot for study.
That's a great goal! I didn't read for fun at all during or even for a few years after getting my education degree.
Have you seen any of the Gaskell adaptations? North and South, Cranford, Wives and Daughters?
I haven't but I've been meaning to (does that count?). Hopefully 2025 is the year!
Just want to make a suggestion which might make your goals a bit more achievable and not so overwhelming. Make a list of book goals you'd like to achieve but have them in a way that you can read the same book and it would tick multiple boxes. For example here are some of my goals that could potentially tick multiple boxes:
10 nonfiction books
10 new (to me) authors
10 translated books
10 Award Winning Books
40 1001 books (I'm reading through the list)
70 books I already own
This way I could read an award winning book from the 1001 list that I already own and tick off multiple boxes.

I'm a big fan of StoryGraph, especially because it's founder is a Black woman. I looove the statistics!
One of my goals is to read more nonfiction Christian books as well as Christian bible characters fiction. Any recommendations?
I have been considering getting an e-reader/kindle myself but I'm not sure. I prefer physical and I find I'm more drawn to it but e-readers are very useful?
It's taken me years of trying to enjoy ebooks to get to the point where I feel like I can justify purchasing an e-reader but I still need to train myself to pick it up, it's not as easy as picking up a book but I think it's just a mental thing I need to get past.

That could be fun!
Re reading goals, I just posted a video about the 31 series I’ll be continuing next year
I would like to have a goal where at least 1 of the books I purchase every month comes from Enclave, a small publisher, or a self-published author. I'm thinking about other goals. I'll have a video up eventually.
I love that goal!
If you did start editing, I might be interested...
