I have had a Kindle Oasis for years, and I love it! The screen is not bright, but does adjust the light a little bit, so I don't get any glares. That has always been a big plus for me.
I started reading kindle books on my phone on the free app. I found the screen created a ton of eye strain. A little over a year ago i got a kindle that has a screen that reads most like a paper book and my eye strain is amazingly lessened. It has helped so much.
Unfortunately, a lot of authors have had experiences similar to mine. I was "wide" on all the platforms (Amazon, Kobo, BN, Smash, etc.) for a while, but the problem was, my READERS were on Amazon using KU. I did a survey and found that 97% of my readers used Kindle in some form. That's a LOT. So... I went back to being Amazon exclusive because it pays the bills. That said, many authors are pushing for "going wide" again, and are doing their part. Kobo has a subscription model now. And with things like Everand etc... it's doable. So... I'm planning on a series that I'll test out again and see. Not sure when, but it really is a problem.
A happy Kobo user here...the one I have is my second one, it's a Kobo Nia. My old one was still okay when I bought the new one so I formatted it and updated the software and put books on it for my teenager who is happily using it sometimes. I use my Nia daily for in bed reading, and when I commute and carry lots of stuff the Kobo will always fit in my bag while a book sometimes is too big. I use the Calibre software to catalog my e-books and send my books to my Kobo via Calibre. For library books (I'min The Netherlands) and NetGalley books I use Adobe Digital Editions to transfer the books to my Kobo.
I haven't been interested in an eReader, but the more physical books I buy the less space I have... because of this, I bought the kobo clara colour and I've actually been enjoying it. It is extremely light and easy to hold. It's also user-friendly.
Your video came at the perfect time, Chantel! I'm really torn between my current Kindle Paperwhite and the Kobo Libra Colour I hoped would replace it. I really wanted a color e-reader but the Kobo seems underwhelming. I also had a bear of a time converting my ebooks to a Kobo-compatible format with editable line spacing and all that. It shouldn't be this hard... so I may just stick with the Kindle.
To get your Kindle books on your husband's Kindle you can reset it and load your account on it. When you return it do the same to put his account back on it.
Yes, that would totally work, I just wanted to also make sure the Kindle was available to him if he wanted to be reading books from his account at the same time. I felt bad enough for using it. 😬
I read all my Libby books on my phone and yes I get distracted!! When notifications pop up I get lost and wind up scrolling. My husband has an older Kindle so I may start using that. That Kobo looks really nice though. Thank you for sharing the pros and cons of each.
The newer Kindles have usb-c to charge. I think mine is a 2022? I also have 2 Kobos. The Libra 2 and the Clara. I got the Clara using PC Points at Shoppers Drug mart hen they have their points redemption weekend. I use it for my purse.
My husband didn’t like his Kindle so he gave it to me. Enjoying it so far as an option. Sometimes I accidentally touch the screen it turns the page. Thanks for the information on the Kobo. 😊
I use a Kindle Fire. I don't notice a glare, but I only use it inside. I also have it on sepia color. It would be nice to have page turning buttons. Overall, I'm happy with my tablet.
I cannot imagine not being able to get library books on my kindle-so annoying! 😩 Most of the books I read on kindle are via Libby, and same for my kids. Hopefully Amazon will get that fixed (I assume it’s Amazon and not Canada that’s the problem 😅).
I have a Kindle Fire HD 10 Tablet - I never have a glare on my Tablet hardly at all. It all depends where you are reading at. Sometimes I will read using my Kindle App on my Phone - No Glare and I will read using my Phone at night when I am in bed. I will always be a Kindle user - I love Kindle - I can read on my Phone - My IPAD - Tablet. I get Kindle Unlimited as well. I read my Thick Books using my Kindle - I don’t have to hold a thick big book in my hands. Happy Reading ❤️🤗🙏☕️🔰❤️
I really need to get a new e-reader at some point, and you might have sold me on the Kobo. I only have a Nook from Barnes and Noble that is about 10 years old. It still works, but the battery life is abysmal, so I usually end up using my phone and get so distracted! I used to read primarily physical books, but that's gotten pretty much impossible with two small kids and trying to hold them while I read 😂
I use my Samsung tablet with all the apos; Kindle, Libby, Everand and Audible. But not so much for out and about,. It's usually for at home use. My daughter has a Kindle Paperwhite which we chose because you can use it for Audible too. We do have some trouble getting the books onto the Kindle at times but that's probably user error.
Chantel this is exactly what I needed, thank you!!! I have been considering getting an e-reader and I am the same as you, I prefer physical and 'historically' (for me) e-reading is not something I like. But it would be so useful for (hopefully!!) saving space?? 😅 Also for travel too, but I don't do much of that! 😂
The Kindle (which version is up to the buyer) is the only one that attaches to Libby from my libraries. If my Oasis dies I might go for the new color Kindle once they've gotten all the bugs out of it.
I had a kobo and I kinda broke it but I just bought another one as I really want to try ebooks again! I refuse to get a kindle as I don’t support Amazon!

I love my Oasis for this reason as well. If only it had color, it would be perfect for me.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your kobo purchase!
Thanks for sharing!
I love my kindle, one of the biggest reasons is being able to read library books. I hope Canada does something about that soon!!

I use my Kindle to read in bed before I fall asleep. Getting library books on it is a big deal. I hope that becomes available to you soon!

I just got a Kobo Clera Color and I love it. It has the Overdrive so you can get books from your library.

I love that you specifically have a purse e-reader! #goals
The silicon cases for kindle , which are very cute, and versatile, have the power button and charger area nicely covered.

An e-reader is so good for when you've got littles, much easier to hold!

I've asked for a Kobo for Christmas. Hoping I can start checking out more library books that are only available as ebooks.
Im thinking of getting kobo color and then the remote page turner...found on anazon. Cheaper than the libra color.

Always and only a physical book for me!🙃
That was always me until this year too. Then I had to move hundreds of books . . .
@ I don’t think I’ll ever change ….lol!
How is it for taking notes?

I have been using the Kindle app on my phone but it is very distracting. I would like to get a kindle this year.
The newer fire tablet is much lighter, has a longer battery life, and uses usb-c:)
I had a kobo and I kinda broke it but I just bought another one as I really want to try ebooks again! I refuse to get a kindle as I don’t support Amazon!
Are you able to use the Libby app on your Kobo? I'd prefer not to support Amazon but I use Libby a ton with our library
@ yes I have gotten ebooks downloaded onto my phone then put them on a computer and import them to the kobo!
