One other thing that's really helpful is watching replays of your own gameplay. It's crazy just how much you don't notice when you're playing an actual match once you watch a replay of it. It helps you pick apart all your bad habits and mistakes. I'd argue watching your own matches is one of the best tools available to you
It is obvious that you are a pro player and well established in the FGC, but, holy cow, it always puts a smile on my face to see how well you do in any fighting game.
Most videos from high skilled players about how to improve (in any game) dont really understand what its like to be new and what a new player should REALLY focus on. I think you really nailed it in this video and I greatly appreciate it!
Aside from not worrying too much about combos, I personally like to learn the basic strings for a character first. After that, I start to experiment with the strings and see what can be special canceled etc. I also do sometimes use the same combo starter occasionally but I'll add a different ender.
Very well explained and friendly for new players! Thank you for your tip brakedown, it actually made me think to play more characters so i can understand the game better. I rly wanna be good and enjoy the game more. I love your calm energy! Peace =)
Another good way to use EX meter is with skills that gives you +frames on block. Often times can catch off-guard newer players who still doesn't know when it's their turn to press buttons and you can start your new mix-up, ooh and extra chip damage. Do not underestimate chip damage.
i hope in the next update they add the ability to tag moves like in mkx and mk11 even if it’s just offline only it’ll be so helpful for learning combos
I got the game yesterday, they didn't launch with that? 😂 What an odd choice, it's such a good tool when you're learning, of all the features to ditch 😅 glad it's back
I didn't even know you can watch other people's replays and that tip alone is very helpful. The rest of the tips are also very helpful. Love this video.
Dude yeah I needed this, I grew up with street fighter so it’s very familiar but playing mk feels so with how they’re input system works. Doing moves before I see them come out feels wild😭
Yea MK's most unique mechanic is how much it emphasizes dial ins in my opinion. I think because of this and a lot of other factors like ducking highs, lack of cross up, MK is ususlly closer to tekken than other 2d fighters in terms of meta.
As a totally blind Mortal Kombat 1 beginner player I can 100% confirm that in game tutorials are really helpful! I completed not all of them, but that I could complete and that are interesting for me in the current moment. As a result I already start to understand what opponent does and it is not a panik anymore when opponent does something, it is more the question how I can counter that. The biggest problem I encounter is jumping opponents. I hear that the opponent jumps but I don't know what to do to counter it and prevent getting an overhead.

I was happy to see that the one or two kombos per fighter I've been doing are about what you prescribe (maybe less komplicated than yours because I kan't EX meter at all) and knowing you can kombo with a kameo after just one hit was a revelation. Hopefully it works for more than just Sareena but I definitely know I have options with her now! Thanks for making this easy to follow!

On your point on trying different characters and kameos. Went into MK1 set on maining Baraka, ended up really enjoying Reiko. Also found myself playing characters I’ve barely played before like Kung Lao, Liu Kang and Sub-Zero. Been really enjoying the cast in this one
Another great way to learn fundamentals is completing all the tutorials. One of the first things I do. Lil nugs of info sprinkled throughout. Great vid for beginners. Keep killing it.

Played PVP right out of story and got wrecked first fight. After which, I did invasions all the way mostly with Scorpion being year of the specter. After learning a lot of the combat along the way, I returned to PVP and won my second fight. This game feels great and I haven’t been excited for and enjoyed Mortal Kombat since MK9

The only thing that ever hurts my enjoyment of online in this game is the sheer lack of creativity in most players. Almost everyone online spam 1-2 combos with no uniqueness in play, no finesse. Even when they are beaten, they still do it. But it’s all raiden’s and smokes and li meis who just get 50% easy kombos lol
Not sure who I’m going to main yet, I still have to figure that out, but I guess I will definitely just have to play multiple characters while learning the fundamentals of the game plays.
I need advice, it seems like a lot of times when someone throws out an unsafe string, I always get poked out immediately trying to counter, and lose any chance I had at pressure, idk what it is
Hit confirms were huge for me. How I learned was waiting for the animation of the attack to happen or start then I know to continue with my combo. It's very necessary for some of Sindel's air extender moves or else it will drop.
I tried Sindel first bc i really liked her moveset in the kampain, but decided i need to learn an easier character first. Will def come back to her after learning the game some
@Bman6464 I learned Scorpion first then I learned Sindel. That will help for sure. Some of her air strings are done very fast and that's the hard part, especially having to do the db2 Or df2 special so that she levitates then you can continue the combo. You got this 🤝🏻🤘🏻
How do I know if it's an jnsafe move cause I am still struggling with ashra and j been playing mk 9 to 11 and now mk1 still can't seem to figure out the combos that are useful I could use some help cause I am mainly a casual player
Dude I’m playing Sub-Zero and struggling and I have the same problem, I’ve played and learned characters in Tekken, SF6, and previous MK’s I can’t seem to get it in this one for some reason, it’s becoming more frustrating than fun since I’m trying to figure out how to do combos and how to confirm hits without getting completely read, blocked and punished, not to mention Kameos haven’t completely clicked for me yet, so yeah MK1 is kinda rough for me rn
People that come from MK11 need to understand this game plays alot different to MK11, MK11 in most of the time was about Mix Ups and catching ur opponent with them to start combos or hit Crushing Blows. In this game however many Chars have no real mix ups except when u pair them with Kameos. In this game most attacks are High or mid eaven if u would think they look like overheads or lows. MK1 is more about pressuring your Opponent while trying to stay save with either save strings or help of Kameo assist to make unsafe strings safe. On the other hand ur defense plan is to wait until the opponent does something unsafe that hit them with ur fastet start up to punish him with a combo. This is really difficult cause u first need to learn all gabs in combos to find a way to punish your oponnent.
cool video my dude... I purchased premium mk1.. and I decided a while back that this will be the first fighting game Id try to get goot at and play ranked. I choose Reptile as my main for now. Im struggling to pick a good kameo, and something special moves dont come out... and still dont know a good strong combo... its kinda frustrating but Ill start by researching for a fiting kameo and practice basic combos and practice special execution.
My issue its that I can't keep up with the buttons during combos. I play reiko and I can't use the command grab when I want to. Doing "back, down, foward, squar" its too much 😭 Any tips?
Excellent video. I can totally vouch for trying other characters. Back in MK11 I got so fed up with sub zeros slide. I put it in lab. And practiced for several 8 hour sessions. On blocking it. It got to the point that I could fb it, once in a while. That move has a 7 frame start up. Basically, you must be ducking, and you must be blocking to stop it. But it was very punishable and lots of sub zero players would just throw it out there. The best one I got was finishing a set by jumping back with raiden, an procing his amplified lightning strike and giving that sub zero a brutality mid slide. That kid called me every name in the book. 😅🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣. Now, you don't need to practice that long. But I did. His slide in that game was kind of an overdose. Another tip. Do not play tired. If your a little serious about the game. Make sure your fully awake, and not hungry. Your guaranteed to have a losing streak if your over tired and or hungry.

Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Ezra Miller from The Flash movie? I have MK 1 on my Nintendo switch. A lot of people are complaining about the Nintendo switch version but the switch version is actually really good. Online and 2 player mode is awesome on the switch. The graphics is good as well. I can't compare MK 1 Nintendo switch graphics to the PS5 because the switch isn't a next gen console and Mortal Kombat 1 was made for Next gen consoles. But for MK 1 to be on the switch is really good especially the gameplay. GREAT VIDEO by the way 🎮🎮
I was so good at mk11 this game just feels way less lenient with timing, ironically I watched mad videos on easier characters for newer players. And I couldn’t seem to get it down, but I went and tried kenshi and something just seemed to click with his timing for me. Still got a lot to learn but it’s a 50/50 for me on which game is better
Honestly the thing that confuses me is that i play scorpion, and like him alot, and when i check tier list, videos whatever, some videos say hes bad some say his mid and other say he's top tier. Im not really someone to drop a character just because it's bad if i like it but damn it's confusing. Plus if i can find a character that i like AND is really good i feel like it's better to pick that, and it was a good surprise when i saw that both Kenshi and Cage were S tier Also great video! Really helped me haha
I love the color and look of this game so much. But i am dog water in this one. I was decent in MK11 and X but i just cant get my meter burn to work consistently and i cant figure out when its supposed to be my turn. I just get overwhelmed with pressure, and then i lose track of how to string my combos. Its a skill issue for me
The meter in this game is very different. You have to press R2/RT at the exact same time as the final input for the special instead of after the special input like the previous games
I think the best tip is actually so basic that people forget about it. Play the game and put in time. A lot of people get sidetracked landing too much or just watching gameplay and end up daydreaming about what they want to do eventually. Start the game and pick up a controller
Go to practice, setup the recording for these 2 moves, have it for randomized, then practice your reaction. Once you learn the initial move, then it's easier.
After spamming the one Liu Kang combo I learned through the entire beta and winning more than half the games, I can confirm the first tip is solid.
Nice. Which combo was that?

Plus if i can find a character that i like AND is really good i feel like it's better to pick that, and it was a good surprise when i saw that both Kenshi and Cage were S tier
Also great video! Really helped me haha
Why care what other people think? If you like the character and are putting in work then you GET OVER HERE all you want.
@@LJAndrews1986 Haha i like the way you think
I love the color and look of this game so much. But i am dog water in this one. I was decent in MK11 and X but i just cant get my meter burn to work consistently and i cant figure out when its supposed to be my turn. I just get overwhelmed with pressure, and then i lose track of how to string my combos. Its a skill issue for me
The meter in this game is very different. You have to press R2/RT at the exact same time as the final input for the special instead of after the special input like the previous games
Nice headphones I got a pair and they work wonders
How do you use the special attack input cuz I start a combo but then drop it by using a non special move that I’m imputing
Could you make a video on setting with the puttin input timing and why it matters.
I think the best tip is actually so basic that people forget about it. Play the game and put in time. A lot of people get sidetracked landing too much or just watching gameplay and end up daydreaming about what they want to do eventually. Start the game and pick up a controller
The game’s controls are complicated but practice makes perfect 👍
What about using the release check? I started with it then turned it off and now I drop my special inputs
Anyone have tips for beating smoke? It seems like his teleport is a 50/50 overhead or low, am I missing something?
If he throws a smoke ball before teleporting, it’s the overhead! If it’s just smoke it’s the low. Learn this to punish him
Go to practice, setup the recording for these 2 moves, have it for randomized, then practice your reaction. Once you learn the initial move, then it's easier.
