I love how Mileena feels in this game. Relatively easy to pick up, but does have some depth. I feel right now that she works well as a whiff punish character since standing 1, 2, and forward 2 all have great range.
Shes simple on paper but her gameplan is unclear for newer players, and they will struggle with her. You cant simply walk forward with her and attack shell get blown up. Once youre playing her high level, she requires a ton of conditioning for her overhead stuff since she has no low starter.
I haven’t played all characters but the ones I did felt like that. Easy to pick up but with some depth, and the kameos can really add to that depth. I’m loving this game
Don’t feel like you’re bad for maining an “easy” character. Most of the time when people complain about characters being too OP they just suck at the game and need to find an excuse for losing. MK usually never has an issue where one character is just leaps and bounds above the rest. If you play Xenoverse 2 you know what that actually looks like (FPSSJ Broly)
Also, a lot of people forget about skill ceiling! Just because a character is easy to pick up and get into doesn't mean they have no depth and complex stuff to work with. There's gonna be a world of difference between someone who's a newbie at an easy character and someone who masters them.

Generally, the easier the character the more obvious downsides they have. For instance, Reiko is really simple in his move set and had good tools, but he doesn’t have huge damage compared to the rest of the cast. However, his combos are pretty easy and he has great footsies with his kick range. Every character has ups and downs and the simpler characters generally are lacking somewhat in versatility. But something to note is that while there are characters that are easier than others, there is no “easy” character. All of them have a high skill cap and can be optimized and perfected at a professional level.
Yeah and in the end even a beginner eventually can learn a character it just takes more time and after that the real skill ceiling is all about game knowledge, reflexes and planning/adapting.

Mortal Kombat 1 is breathtakingly gorgeous. It's great to see the beauty of Outworld before the destruction. Hanging Gardens, The Great Hall and Sun Do are absolutely beautiful. The Wushi Academy gets my vote for the best looking stage. Sometimes I go back and forth between Hanging Gardens and Wushi Academy.
As someone who is new to fighting games in general, I LOVE Reiko, but his combos are really difficult for me. Reliably doing special attacks alone is difficult for me for some reason, and Reiko uses them a lot.
baraka and ashra were the only 2 characters that felt good when i played them in story mode. I still wanna explore ashra more, and try out tanya/mileena/scorpion/li mei, but i haven't stopped playing baraka since friday. Then his lvl 14 fatality is one of my top 3 favorite fatalities in the game.
After playing around with Sindel, I don’t think her Kameo moves are just a weird gimmick. I think she, more than any other character I’ve played so far, depends on her Kameo to formulate a specific strong gameplan. Different Kameos will help facilitate levitate air mixups versus zoning versus pressure/overhead-low mixups etc. The fact that she has such easy access to restand as well as a lot of meaty tools means you have more space to use Inspire without needing to worry about getting knockdowns as much, which obviously then allows you to make better use of your Kameo. She’s really interesting imo
3:39 Mileena is my main bc of how they did her story arc in MK1 while she is kinda easy & can deff kill Scrubs, if you wanna be good with her, don’t be scrubby lol bc she’s very punishable
Li Mei also has a Low - Overhead string that i've been using as a new player myself, and it has a pretty decent success rate against other new players.
I’m ngl I think he was right ab putting havik in hard. He looks super simple but tbh he plays differently than every other character in the game. His lack of launchers, no overhead/low opener, and slow speed make him very difficult to win with. I think new players that pick him up and hop online will feel like they’re getting outsped/outcomboed/outmatched. And that’s because he takes real game knowledge to win with
I'm playing Baraka and Reiko. Baraka because I always play Baraka when he's in, and Reiko because I love grapplers and his playstyle reminds me of Kano from mk11
I think they did a great job at making the very strongest characters harder to learn but also made the easier to learn characters still fun to play. And they made so many Kameos strong that even the easiest characters to learn are viable with the right Kameo. From who I've played so far, no Character feels as bad as the lowest tier MK11 characters.
If you just want to have fun, play Raiden. He does a ton of damage in relation to the amount of effort you need to put in to play him. Sure he has an issue oppening other fighters up, but for a beginner you'll have that issue with any character you play when you fight a player that's good enough at defending to make that Raiden weakness even noticeable.
And that's not even that big of a problem since I can get a full combo from Jax cameo on his back grab, and grab/mid pressure always works more or less.
I’m having a blast with baraka I seriously love Havik he’s always been one of my favorite mk characters but he’s rough to use so I’d probably stay away until you’ve got some time with him
That’s what makes the game so interesting …..the challenge! It’s like a puzzle with these characters and once you figure out the right moves, there’s no stopping you
I thought Shao is pretty simple. His inputs don't change and most of his moves without the axe are very similar. Was looking forward to learning something new about him in the combo tutorials but then it just showed me stuff I naturally picked up from playing
shang tsung is super difficult to master. you need to know how most characters work if you are going to shapeshift into the enemy. you also got 2 movesets. young or old version. most shangs i've played only stay in old version and i can see why when i tried him out.
i play Mileena since mk9 and love her...she feels more like her mk x version and is just fun to use. i personaly have a quite casual approach when playing the first time a new fighting game. i randomly push buttons and see what is working and how it feels then i deep dive into the movelist. so far every character in mk 1 is fun to use and it feels better balanced (fu sareena kameo!) as mk11 (remember release geras easy braindead damage?!). great fighting game overall...PLEASE NRS BRING BACK MY BLOODY GIRL SKARLET!!!!!!!!
I just picked up MK1, and I always use Shao or Liu Kang. Shao's combos are a bit challenging, but they work really well. I already learned most of Liu Kang's and Raiden's combos too but the hardest characters are 100% on the money. Kudos to you if you main Kenshi or Shang!
Traditionally Scorpion and Liu Kang are designed to be the "Ryu" of MK, pick them up and learn the game. They both had a difficult cancel variation in MKX, but for the most part, they are the most beginner friendly ( and they do have a bit of a ceiling, rarely do you see them at the top of an MK tier list) Shang looks the most complex to me, lots of versatily but you gotta master both of his versions, a bit like Gen ( although less extreme)
Side note: I think Li Mei's a scrub killer in a unique way? Not because of her tools, but because her kit is instantly digestible? If you're an intermediate player who's used to learning new fighting games, you'll see her, pick her up, take her to a lab, and be like. "Oh!" "I'm gonna be a problem." Her kit is honest, but I think in the first couple of weeks you're gonna see this character make people feel like badly programmed ai.
My first mortal kombat im playing and ive started with smoke. Didnt watch anything just saw him and was like this guy looks cool. Been figuring him out and he’s awesome. The timing of some combos is tough and i haven’t figured out how to do the cancels right
I‘m new to the game and decided to learn Kenshi. It‘s super difficult but I enjoy his playstyle so much, I‘m having lots of fun which is most important to me. Gonna keep practicing and hope I‘ll become decent with him.
For people that wanna win, abuse the meta with raiden, and baraka, but if you want to have fun or feel accomplished I recommend playing harder characters
yeah i think K7 meant that you have to learn how to use her dark stuff early, get the buff on opponent and switch back to get her full potential. definitely a lot to manage but it's so worth it, she's so strong and fun.
I genuinely disagree with Scorpion being "easy". What he lacks is any mix, which in NRS games is an absolute staple for converting into any kind of damage and something he always used to have (which made him a great starter character). Scorpion has literally no threat of confirming off any lows. He can do a ton of damage but opening people up is genuinely a challenge and you don't have to think about defending against him. If Scorpion had any form of low hit confirmable starter I would say for sure he is a great starter but he provides a challenge, especially for new players that will get constantly mixed by other characters mix strings when he has none. Just my opinion.
I've gotta say that I first picked up Smoke and I love him. I can say that he's relatively easy to pick up. Mastering him is... well I wouldn't say hard. But something like deceptively difficult. Probably the hardest thing to do is to cancel his back forward 3 from a combo string. From neutral it's easy.
Every time I start playing a new mortal kombat (or other fighting games) I forget about all of the fine details and reaction times that make the game much harder than I think. I like the idea of playing fighting games, but I am usually only one stage above button masher.
I started out with Raiden and Scorpion but stuck with Kung Lao. I'm no combo master but i can usually manage to hold my own against some decent players.
Lei Mei is the most bread and butter character that anyone is going to get on mk1. Her strings are easy to remember and learn and chained together especially if you put a correct Cameo behind it and she is actually a somewhat respectable character because she takes some skill to play and she's not brain dead❤
37:00 I was happy to hear some good players say they though Shujinko was good. I thought he looked cool, but I also thought he might suck since I figured the charging might be a problem.
I think he's really cool...but not very good lol. Not only is he extremely situational, but his normal summon attacks are pretty mediocre, and having no ambush attack means he can't cover your unsafe strings or extext your combos outside of special cancellable moves. Which is fine, Frost is in the same boat. But then you remember with Frost, at least you know you're always gonna get a low combo extender, a safe armored reversal, a mid attack with good chip that pushes the opponent fullscreen on hit or block, and a slow moving iceball with near unlimited utility. This isn't to say Shujinko sucks, just he's very heavily dependant on the matchup. Like, against Kung Lao, all you're getting is a standard fireball and his spin, which is pretty whatever. But then, you're facing a Smoke, and now your Johnny Cage with his bag of high/low strings can now turn invisible lol. That's insane! Or you're playing a Kenshi, and now anyone can become a puppet character. That could genuinely be game breaking! 😅
The only thing I desagree is that Liu Kang is easy for begginers. And this is coming from someone that did not buy Mortal kombat because was so bad that not even the AI on medium dificulty I could beat. I started learning in the MK 11 and went to Liu, and the thing begginers has the most dificulty is breaking through the opponent's defense and as Liu has no Low/Overhead that leads to a combo, doing this became an almost impossible job for me. So it forced me to learn the fundaments. So I my opinion, every character with low/overhead that leads to a combo is great for begginers, and champs Like Liu is only great after the player has the fundaments. Great Video!
As someone who is trying to learn Kenshi, I wouldn’t personally recommend him to new players since he is not only a puppet character but also a stance character with multiple completely different move sets. He is very strong but also very hard to learn and takes so much time

Even as a casual player, this was hella informative and a great video!
Great, so the two characters i wanted to learn to play end up being the hardest to learn. Fuck it, we ball.
3:39 Mileena is my main bc of how they did her story arc in MK1 while she is kinda easy & can deff kill
Scrubs, if you wanna be good with her, don’t be scrubby lol bc she’s very punishable
"So here's the final tier list."
"Wait. Is there anyone we're missing?"
"No. I think that's it."
Reiko: *stops existing*
Reptile/ shang main here, both are fire, I wanna pick Raiden nitara and kung lao up next
Li Mei also has a Low - Overhead string that i've been using as a new player myself, and it has a pretty decent success rate against other new players.
I'm a Li Mei Main too and although shes easy to pick up she can be very tricky with the lanterns projectiles and overhead air cartwheel
As a Shang Yung player coming from Mk11 to Mk1 I had somewhat of an aneurysm switching between but learning other characters also buffs my arsenal 😎
Baraka because I always play Baraka when he's in, and Reiko because I love grapplers and his playstyle reminds me of Kano from mk11
but reiko command grabs are so hard. a lot things are easier
Same here. Use Darrius as a kameo for Baraka too, which works will to extend his Combos. Probably gonna try Him for Reiko too ( as opposed to Sektor
love how he mains Nitara and doesn’t even put her on the list!
If you main Shang Tsung, you main the entire roster.
@@davidepanceri8192grab combos scale to less tho, Lui Kang with Kung Lao as Kameo also has a grab combo, but doesn’t even scale to 30%
Reptile , Havik, Ashra my mains rn
I suck as sf6 I’m bad at this,BUT I use characters that I think are fun so I always have fun playing and eventually get better.
I pick up kenshi as a new player to the series and I loving it so far 😊
Helpful info, guys. Many thanks!
I liked Raiden in this game at first because of his voice, and now he’s my favorite character to play as
*Sub Zero's only weakness*
"That which gives life"
I've been playing Nitara as a begginer, I love how she plays Dragon Ball Fighterz while the others are playing Mortal Kombat
Looking forward to the upcoming "How I became #1 Rain" and "How I became #1 Ashrah" video!!
I’m having a blast with baraka I seriously love Havik he’s always been one of my favorite mk characters but he’s rough to use so I’d probably stay away until you’ve got some time with him
Baraka, Mileena, and Reptile will be my mains
General Shao and kenshi were the hardest for me, they both have 2 move sets. Took me about 3 hours to figure out a decent combo with them
That’s what makes the game so interesting …..the challenge!
It’s like a puzzle with these characters and once you figure out the right moves, there’s no stopping you
@brandonfrye2902 don't see how 20 hit combos are bad
I thought Shao is pretty simple. His inputs don't change and most of his moves without the axe are very similar. Was looking forward to learning something new about him in the combo tutorials but then it just showed me stuff I naturally picked up from playing
shang tsung is super difficult to master. you need to know how most characters work if you are going to shapeshift into the enemy. you also got 2 movesets. young or old version. most shangs i've played only stay in old version and i can see why when i tried him out.
@@NeroNORirl I figured him out pretty quick. He's fun to play with and one of my fav characters
as i wait for mk1 to download. this is literally the perfect video for me to watch. thank you :)
i play Mileena since mk9 and love her...she feels more like her mk x version and is just fun to use. i personaly have a quite casual approach when playing the first time a new fighting game. i randomly push buttons and see what is working and how it feels then i deep dive into the movelist. so far every character in mk 1 is fun to use and it feels better balanced (fu sareena kameo!)
as mk11 (remember release geras easy braindead damage?!). great fighting game overall...PLEASE NRS BRING BACK MY BLOODY GIRL SKARLET!!!!!!!!
Mileena was a beast on mk9
@@gooeseman8942 i dont know tbh had never the chance to play online because no german server (because of censorship)
They both had a difficult cancel variation in MKX, but for the most part, they are the most beginner friendly ( and they do have a bit of a ceiling, rarely do you see them at the top of an MK tier list)
Shang looks the most complex to me, lots of versatily but you gotta master both of his versions, a bit like Gen ( although less extreme)
Side note: I think Li Mei's a scrub killer in a unique way? Not because of her tools, but because her kit is instantly digestible? If you're an intermediate player who's used to learning new fighting games, you'll see her, pick her up, take her to a lab, and be like. "Oh!"
"I'm gonna be a problem." Her kit is honest, but I think in the first couple of weeks you're gonna see this character make people feel like badly programmed ai.
Rain is my favorite first time ever owning a mortal Kombat game after years of only watching it
Kenshi feels so good to use when you get the hang of his moveset
I use Li Mei, Johnny cage, and Ashrah
My first mortal kombat im playing and ive started with smoke. Didnt watch anything just saw him and was like this guy looks cool. Been figuring him out and he’s awesome. The timing of some combos is tough and i haven’t figured out how to do the cancels right
Never thought I’d be a Reptile main, but here we are. Holy shit is he good lol
As in every Mortal Kombat game she is in, I picked Mileena and I’m currently trying to memorize her combos.
I‘m new to the game and decided to learn Kenshi. It‘s super difficult but I enjoy his playstyle so much, I‘m having lots of fun which is most important to me. Gonna keep practicing and hope I‘ll become decent with him.
Always like jumping in K7 streams he always so chill.
Sonya is amazing with kitana. Since youll be keeping people in the air her square punch makes it easier.
Exact video topic I was looking for 😁
For people that wanna win, abuse the meta with raiden, and baraka, but if you want to have fun or feel accomplished I recommend playing harder characters
I knew I wanted to play Ashrah the second I saw her revealed. I have nearly mastered all her kombo strings. That said, I fuggin suck at this game.
As a new player. I jumped straight to Kenshi 😂
I picked up kenshi first day playing and was slaying tf out
Asharah is not too bad. I have been maining her day 1. Much more simple than a lot of others lol
yeah i think K7 meant that you have to learn how to use her dark stuff early, get the buff on opponent and switch back to get her full potential. definitely a lot to manage but it's so worth it, she's so strong and fun.
Thank you trying to really learn this game is a challenge I don't get to play it as much but having fun with it
36:05 playing Your Sunset from Tekken Tag Tournament 2 in the background Ugh Diaphone the taste you have.. you get it
I genuinely disagree with Scorpion being "easy".
Reiko reminds me of Jason so i’m gonna rock with him also can’t wait to us Omni man no matter how good or bad he may be
Sindel and Goro have been my main for a while now and its been so much fun but frustrating at times 😂
Thought I was doing well labbing, tried her tutorial and was like damn I’m no where near
ashrah looks sick. i want to try her in this game.
I’ve always played kenshi in the other games and it feels a lot easier than what everyone says
Every time I start playing a new mortal kombat (or other fighting games) I forget about all of the fine details and reaction times that make the game much harder than I think. I like the idea of playing fighting games, but I am usually only one stage above button masher.
Hi! Just got to know the channel very good work! Keep on keeping on.
Great video, thanks guys
Brut didn't know if chat was. Respect
he said no one is impossible for new players but i think shang tsung would make a new player cry 😭
I started out with Raiden and Scorpion but stuck with Kung Lao. I'm no combo master but i can usually manage to hold my own against some decent players.
I noticed the tekken songs in the background 😂 respect .. my mains are sub zero and scorpion for now
Lei Mei is the most bread and butter character that anyone is going to get on mk1. Her strings are easy to remember and learn and chained together especially if you put a correct Cameo behind it and she is actually a somewhat respectable character because she takes some skill to play and she's not brain dead❤
smoke is so freaking difficult for me but i absolutely have to play as him i need this😭😭😂
37:00 I was happy to hear some good players say they though Shujinko was good.
Picked up Sub and took to him like a duck to water. Then again, been a Chad Zero main since forever.
I suck SO much at fighting games but I´ve decided I´m learning reptile and geras at some point
I’d move Raiden in a tier above Great for Beginners called the brain dead easy tier lmao
The Smoke/Sareena team must be super easy cause every other match Online is Smoke and Sareena
Yup. Sareena for the win.
Drives me nuts.
