@@Furblesnert I think he has told us very time he uses outside devs, but the core game is totally him - and it's all better for it. I have always believed a good cRPG is when, 6 hours in, you are still finding new things. Just like Splat did...!
@@Mac-xo2zj I think it looks rather decent for an indy game. On this channel, we have seen other games, made by actual teams, that were not as deep and did not look better at all. This game has many systems, and a huge amount of details (planets, items, quests, etc.); I mean it is *not* a small project.
Easily one of my top three 'single developer' games out there. This game does it all. Reminds me of ancient games like the Traveller CRPGs, and unique games like New World Computing's Planet's Edge. I have forever wanted a triple A space and ground RPG. (and one that doesn't get lost chasing pie-in-the-sky)
@@TheEvilJade Avorion is basically minecraft in space meets X3/X4, you do missions in a procedurally generated 3D universe, and you can build your ships/fleets from scratch and use blocks to make armor, engines, weapons, and all other parts. And when you blow things up the bits left can be salvaged into their component materials. It's huge, with all the mining, and trading, research, and even diplomacy you can do in a triple A space game. There's even multiplayer. (It's technically not single developer since there is a sound guy, but the game is done by one guy.) Endless Sky is a top down space game like Star Sector, but much bigger and a stronger Original Elite space trading feel to it. It's got a decent story, but the sandbox is the most fun. You can run fleets and have carriers with fighters or drones to guard you. And it can be pretty difficult. Ship customization is surprisingly deep for a top-down space game and so is the trading. ...Have been on my top three; Banished and Stardew Valley (but I'm sure you guys already know about them.) Bonus! Star Traders: Frontiers by the Trese brothers. This one is two developers, but it's a really unique game so I thought I'd throw it in. But I am really looking forward to their upcoming Cyberpunk RPG, Cyber Knights: Flashpoint But yea, swapping between Avorion and Stellar Tactics, with some mad clickies going on in Endless Sky has used up untold hours of my free time. Oh, and one more thing about Stellar Tactics, I don't remember Splat talking about this, but when he said the loot system is like Diablo, that goes for space, too. One of the things I like most about the space combat in this game is it's like the Starpoint Genesis games, (except 3) and the first Rebel Galaxy game, but it has that same shooter/looter loot system as ground combat. so it's really fun just launching into space and then shooting up enemies just to see what they drop.
Nice. Space games always make me remember Starflight on Genesis system. I can't ever forget it. Anyone who hasn't played should do so on an emulator. ^_^
Holy Moly.... Planets Edge was an AMAZING game. I actually went in halfsies with a friend so we could buy a Roland Sound Blaster so his 486 could have sound JUST for that game. *sniff* I am so old.... :)

Splat, you normally are able to scratch the surface and demonstrate a game really well... but you have not yet even scuffed this one... there are procedural dungeons via quests through a 'star gate' like portal. I did a 'clear level' type mission, upon completion I was surprised to see a chest with legendary loot. make sure you pack fusion cells so you can recall out. fusion cells can also be used to travel along your very own warp gate network, because with 160,000 systems this map is huge. you can carry drones with you to exploit mineral deposits that you find in your travels; automate them for cash, leave them on manual if you want to refine the ore on your ship for crafting purposes. Once you set up a few warp gates you can use the Trade-Net to find those pesky crafting materials or making loads of credits. The loot system is great. Every time you run in to town you never know if what you might find. The upgrade slots can be pretty amazing! I found a laser sight for my shotgun that added +1 dex and +26% to hit. All ship equipment has different stats at the same level, there is a lot of shopping to do. ALSO! Space combat difficulty can be adjusted. Make sure you have your shields up ["G" key] and let them charge before the engagement. Press Q and E to rotate your shields towards the brunt of the fire and use T for chaff on incoming missiles.... I am sure there is more to this game.... i have been to 3 systems and have done 1 quest at the experimental station thing. I bought this game from your review - I am very happy that I did. I am running this game without problem on a steam deck with little issues
Hey splat. Just wanted to say thnx. Thanks to you I know what games to pass on or which ones to keep an eye on. So thnx for all the stuff you do and keep it up 👍
Love this game, its been in EA for a very long time but the Developer is very responsive and interacts with community a lot. Cant wait for this one to release.
What i really like about Stellar Tactics, (and the reason i have over 600 hrs playing) is because as Splat mentioned, it wears several hats. You can focus almost entirely on space battle for hours, and never even do anything on foot except maybe going in to sell stuff you looted. Likewise you can spend hours and hours doing dungeon runs, only needing to fly to accept and turn in new missions, and hit the vendors once in a while. Then there is trading, and crafting, or salvaging ships to sell them. It's almost like 2 or maybe 3 different games all in one.
Since you have serious hours in the game, could I ask if this game has depth? I feel like games like these often suffer from very broad but extremely shallow as they can't focus on a single area, particularly since it is a small dev? It's the kind of thing that you can't really pick up from a 30 min video.
@@Orcrist I have not played much since the last couple updates where he added more story, so i cant speak to how deep chapter 1 is, the prologue was very short, just to get you out and playing. It's more of a sandbox. I'd say the gameplay loops themselves are fairly shallow, but there is depth within them, like different ships for space combat, but more depth with customizing your team for the dungeon runs. Best thing i can say is look for more gameplay vids, see if it meshes with other games you enjoy. I personally tend to weigh a game based on how many hours i get compared to the price. I've played Stellar Tactics more than just about any AAA title in recent years. No Man's Sky, and New World are probably the only other games i've played as much since i bought ST.
Played a few of the builds back when first went on sale, glad to see the progress in development. This game has lots of good ideas and it doesn't do them poorly.
Some tips for this game: Grenades. Good god use grenades freely. Gas grenades are fantastic and the AI is usually not developed enough to go around them. Your weapon's primary skill is free so don't hesitate to use them for that extra free shot. Splash damage weapons, particularly early game are king. Space combat has light and heavy weapons. Heavy weapons do great damage but can't be used to cause pinpoint damage to sub systems. Light weapons don't do great damage but they can target sub-systems. If you want to capture an enemy ship, you'll need to purchase beacons for a salvager to come collect them. Back to the sub systems, you need to taek out the weapons, shields and an engineering system. You can board when all three systems are down. From here, you can loot the ship and the crew. To actually capture the ship, you'll need to use resources to repair the damage you've caused to make it move. You can also salvage parts from these system so if you're not going to capture the ship, you can salvage the parts for the next ship. When out of combat Shift+R reloads all. Always put points into Intelligence. It increases the EXP gains of almost everything. If you have a numpad on your keyboard, you can use that for hacking.
Geez splat... Your timing is impeccable.. I just removed this from my wishlist cause I hadn't seen movement or updates on it, and here you are, making me all interested in it again! Darn you! XD

Also , general tip, the space-combat is pretty wonky but you can set it to "easy" in the options, at which point you should generally be able to win battles with your base ship if you're in the beginning area systems. Upgrading any ship you get is your main priority because it lets you make the money you'll need for everything else.
wow, can't believe you'd never done this one before. This game was the one that basically restored my faith in the prospect of Early Access games. Bought it like 5 years ago and play it hardcore for a few weeks periodically. Think steam says i have 600 hours or something, but pretty sure it's higher than that.

I got this game YEARS ago lol, and honestly the one developer is always active and the game has gone through a TON of overhauls for pretty much EVERY system the game has, from combat, to ui, to avatars, to ship combat, parts, skills, etc etc. This game needs more love and attention from sci-fi/crpg fans, but I understand the visuals and the gameplay isn't for everyone especially many more younger/modern gamers.
So happy to see you play this! I've had this game for a long while, and have played off and on, letting it cook longer. The escape opener gets old fast if your wanting to get to space. It is a single Dev. Doing an amazing job. Watching splat, I'm definitely going to jump back in.
Thx man for doing this. I bought the game years ago and thought it was dead, but they just keep working on it, haven't touched it for a while and I see now they did come quite a way forward so I'll be picking it up again...
Icons used also in Empyrion: Galactic Survival, it was for matrix elements or something, a pretty rare and expensive items used for some more advanced crafting. Most likely, the icons were used somewhere else also. Great coverage and the game looks pretty interesting.
the drawback to having a "return to ship" button though is if they want to add special twists at the end like, for example, you get jumped by someone on the way out (just as a random example) then you can end up getting advance warning something is up when it doesn't appear. Not saying they will, just that it kind of negates that possibility if they did. I think a good compromise if they do that, would be a "return to entrance" button that just basically tells the characters to start walking back so you can click one button and wait a bit.
There are a lot of assets packs for icons, UI elements and such that people primarily interested in coding or 3D modelling can buy if they can't be bother to do them themselves. It's cool because it saves small devs time and all, but then you have pultiple unrealted games with identical elements.
Ground combat has pretty varied weapon types, kinetic and various energy, snipers, heavy weapons etc. So, you can set up a versatile party to your personal preference.
I've played this on release and its come a massive way from day 1 to now, 1 guy making it (Don). Main thing that needs improving is combat flow (or combat speed option) other than that for a single guy team its a gem, inspired by Fallout, Sential worlds I, Jagged Alliance, Buck Rodgers and a little Eve Online.
Sentinel Worlds... that is name I have not heard in a long, long time... That was one of the first games I bought with a friend of mine so we could play it on his computer. 1988 was a GOOD year.
Warning: if the game freezes up on you, refund it within the Steam 2 hour window and wait for it to be fixed. I really like this game with a few minor gripes and one huge one. The huge grope is that I was unable to play it for long due to some issue that caused it freeze up and lock up my laptop, requiring a restart of the laptop (iirc). . The developer is pretty awesome and was in direct contact with me where he asked for more info because the glitch would affect some people and not others and he couldn't nail it down. So, he was aware of and actively trying to solve that problem along with putting out other regular updates. It's been about a year since I've messed with it. When it would give me a decent stretch before locking up, it was a really cool game with both ground (and boarding) and space combat. My minor gripes were an issue in the starting or tutorial missions where the quest broke or was so unobvious that it was impossible to proceed. I forget what solved that, an update or me finding the solution. Either way, if a player had to Google in the first 15 minutes, the game has something wrong. Lastly, the space has pitch up and down controls but you can't go vertical. This resulted in having to do a flying circular staircase to shoot at ships "higher" or "lower" (hello space vocabulary!) than you. The biggest issue was that there wasn't any advantage to the "3D" up and down. It seemed like an attempt to add space ambiance and realism but was just annoying and made some combat difficult due to the staircase and poor controls. A "flat" space like Star Trek: Starfleet Command (1999, Interplay) or the smoother, shallower up and down of Star Trek online would've been better. Hopefully he's fixed the freezing glitch that made it unplayable for some and rethought the "3D" and controls.
The worn turbo oscillator part that looks familiar to you is very similar to a part in Empyrion Galactic Survival that is needed to craft things in that game.
It reminds me of some old DOS game I played as a kid where you built a team of people and ran around on planets questing and then flying between the planets in space ships. The character creation was crazy in that game though, you would pick like career paths and random events would happen and the character would gain more money/starting equipment/skills based on decisions made. Different planets had different laws on what weapons you could bring on world through the spaceport and some characters could manage to sneak in certain weapons you weren't supposed to have.
Sounds a bit like Hard Nova, but I think you can only choose between male and female for the main character in that one. Now I am intrigued. EDIT: Ah you must be talking about Megatraveller. It has all of that and a really cool character generator. I almost forgot about it because of the godawful combat system and because 90% of all skills are completely useless.
Ah yes, this game, I usually come back and jump into it around once a year before taking a break and waiting for another major update or two. Trying to avoid diving in too deep so I don't feel bored with the game when it finally releases.
That Icon you said looked like from another game. Empyrion Galactic Survival uses that icon for one of their CPU Extender crafting components it is an Large Optronic Matrix.
Ah, I loved playing Stellar Tactics. Memberberries those over powered combat exploits we had before they got 'fixed'. :) Looking forward to the story additions down the road.
I like the game idea as a whole but the visuals are not appealing to me. It looks full of mismatched bought assets. I understand why that is, but a more coherent asthetic would be nice. Also: Text font and text colour as well as size of some on screen events are way too tacky. But I guess those things are easy to improve if you get someone with an eye for design to look over it.

looked through the comments and didnt see anyone mention it - you get an experimental translocator device from House Halamis at the repeatable dungeon location that will warp you out of a dungeon and back to your ship for the cost of one fusion battery
I find it interesting that Star Valor and Stellar tactics use the same picture icons to depict missiles, mines, etc. If you play Star Valor, you will recognize a lot of the item frame pictures that Stellar Tactics uses.
I play this game, but when it comes to space flight, I think that there was a glitch, and I couldn't see the objective where I should flight to, and I had no idea how to control the camera to turn and see it.
Im happy this was reviewed. I been following it for years now. Its really quite unique. And defiantly deserves some spotlight. Only complaint i have is the overhead controls for when in character mode.. feels awkward to me. should really just have the party leader as the only sprite when walking around.

I've been playing this for years. Such a great game.
the drawback to having a "return to ship" button though is if they want to add special twists at the end like, for example, you get jumped by someone on the way out (just as a random example) then you can end up getting advance warning something is up when it doesn't appear. Not saying they will, just that it kind of negates that possibility if they did.
I think a good compromise if they do that, would be a "return to entrance" button that just basically tells the characters to start walking back so you can click one button and wait a bit.
Of the developer codes the quest, then it could be made so that you press the Return to Ship button, then you get transitioned into a surprise combat.
That definitely goes into my wishlist. Thanks for the treat Splatty.
A lot of the icons are shared with Star Valor. I had to go check if it was the same dev. Looks like a fun game.
There are a lot of assets packs for icons, UI elements and such that people primarily interested in coding or 3D modelling can buy if they can't be bother to do them themselves. It's cool because it saves small devs time and all, but then you have pultiple unrealted games with identical elements.
Eight mins in and the first dialogue is a Fallout 1 referrence
I love this game. I've been playing this since it first hit early access.
Ground combat has pretty varied weapon types, kinetic and various energy, snipers, heavy weapons etc. So, you can set up a versatile party to your personal preference.
Love how hacking is based on Dex, just like the movies where they mash the keyboard frantically!
Glad you mentioned Buck Rodgers, I was thinking the same thing. I loved that game, and wish that it would get a respectful remake.
@@phlogistanjones2722 i have all those games in original big box packaging, love the box art.
It is already on my Steam wishlist, most probably because of you :P, but I am excited at seeing it again. Will def. play it once it is fully ready.
When you started the game the first thing that came to mind was Homeworld series in a instant :) Good series and new game coming soon ish ;)
this has literally been in early accesses for like 10 years
5 years, and updated monthly throughout that whole time!
Lol
Love the game...several on steam recently bought it based on your stream.
I’m getting a “Planets Edge” vibe from this.
Man, I wish the guys that made xenonaughts would do for Planets Edge what they did for X-com.
Looks like a re-do of Planet's Edge, one of my fav games!
Love your work Splat
It's a labor of love but also a bit pedestrian.
Thank you for sharing this game, I'll definitely give it a try once it's finished.
Nice features review. Really enjoy this title.
Amazing Ty Splat. Open I liked and I bought on steam. Cool game. Great weekend play
That Icon you said looked like from another game. Empyrion Galactic Survival uses that icon for one of their CPU Extender crafting components it is an Large Optronic Matrix.
The game has me so husky I damn near strapped a sled to my back and ran the Iditarod.
Yo imagine this in the world of Warhammer 40K. You play as Orks and just go daka daka daka.
Well, its not orks, but Rogue Trader looks like it will be in a similar vein as this.
This sprite on item you saw, I think it's used in Empirion Galactic Survival
I'm getting space Wasteland vibes, looks hella rad!
Looks like the ancient _Sentinel Worlds I_ and _Hard Nova_ got an unexpected offspring 😄👍
Ah, I loved playing Stellar Tactics. Memberberries those over powered combat exploits we had before they got 'fixed'. :)
Looking forward to the story additions down the road.
It’s like old X-Com and Eve, and I grew up on X-Com and played Eve about a month after it released
It also seems to pull from Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday. Which was awesome back in the day.
Looks more like a EVE Online / Shadowrun crossover to me. Thanks for letting me know about this one. Looks very interesting.
Wow, these Devs managed to brilliantly fuse together 3 different classic good games into one. Love the visual appeal also.
@@kazumsvirtuelleeinode4067 like one cute Draenei once said "pff, details" .. can't hit every ones taste right ? .. It's always what you compare a small staff indie project to.. fallout ? D3 ? EO ? then sure - it lacks here and there. I would be proud if I could dream up such a game and realise it with a couple dudes and the support of the community. Cheers !
Game is created by one guy ;-)
Thanks for all of your entertaining work! 😁
Loving it!
But I will wait, the animations looks really rough.
But I have the faith that this game is gonna be massive and fun!
looked through the comments and didnt see anyone mention it - you get an experimental translocator device from House Halamis at the repeatable dungeon location that will warp you out of a dungeon and back to your ship for the cost of one fusion battery
Just picked this up in the summer sale. Excited to play it
I recognized the icon set right away from Space Merchant.
This ship kind of looks like a confessor, so you were spot on with the Amarrian corelation
Fights with a giant laser claymore…. Pictured me placing claymores giant claymores on the ground with mile long lasers.
I find it interesting that Star Valor and Stellar tactics use the same picture icons to depict missiles, mines, etc. If you play Star Valor, you will recognize a lot of the item frame pictures that Stellar Tactics uses.
Ship at the beginning reminds me of the Earth Crusers from Babylon 5.
I still pop in to grind this a day here and there. It's one of the better indy games, but I honestly doubt I will ever find the time to finish.
The first item you recognised, the damaged oscillator, looks like a small matrix from Empyrion, not sure if they are from the same icon pack though.
I play this game, but when it comes to space flight, I think that there was a glitch, and I couldn't see the objective where I should flight to, and I had no idea how to control the camera to turn and see it.
Might be a very cool baseline to something like a 40k game or mod added onto this.
Rogue Trader looks like it will be something like this.
Looks almost like Fallout 1/2 in space in terms of graphics. Definitely have to check it out.
Im happy this was reviewed. I been following it for years now. Its really quite unique. And defiantly deserves some spotlight. Only complaint i have is the overhead controls for when in character mode.. feels awkward to me. should really just have the party leader as the only sprite when walking around.
Ooooh I like games that wear multiple hats !
Very much like Fallout Tactics in space.
That item that looks a bit like a robot head is also from a game called Empyrion Galactic Survival 😁
There's one skull and its yours
Yeah let's go, more spaceship games
28:20 you killed him --- rather disintegrated... blatch!
Turrents look inspired by any tower defence game.. failing that, space engineers... probably could make that exact ship in SE too tbh.
Icewind Dale with guns is a yes.
I call this game 'Eve Effect Gate' from its big 3 influences.
I recognize a number of the icons from Star Valor, so they're using some of the same resources.
Some reason this did not populate on the UA-cam app... Happy to see it on desktop though! Looks good.
Its still around. Hell yeah.
Every third word is 'like', like this...and like that. like so constantly.
14:21 Where did I see that shield icon before> Hmmm....
