After laying bricks for 55 odd years what am I doing watching this on a Sunday morning ! I'm Norfolk too and I lay my bricks pretty much the same as you. Back in the sixties when we often laid common bricks on the inside walls and in foundations an apprentice could do backing up with bricks or work in the foundations. And of course inspection chambers and ducts too. Mind you you had to watch those fishtail ties sticking out of the back of the wall. Towards the end I was the only one that didn't wear gloves too, never needed them. Glad to see I'm not the only one that breaks into a little song when I'm working. What's wrong with us why aren't we stressed to b****ry? to use a Norfolk word. Peace and love.

Hello from North America. This video brought back some memories. Forty years ago I took a job tending a couple masons. A father son business. Everyone called the old man mud slinger. At times it was all I could do just to mix the mud and lug the bricks. There wasn't any time to stand around and watch. Eventually I got the hang of it. I didn't stay in masonry I switched to ceramic tile and flooring.

Randomly mashing up bits of goofy tunes is the best part of working in the trades. I also strongly support the tradition of making up your own lyrics about whatever is in view. Spice things up with some good old double entendre, impersonations of pompous characters, trashy references and absurd humor and suddenly the workday is too short. Inferences towards the boss's romantic capabilities, the wife’s spending habits, and the meaninglessness of life are always on point of course. One of my all time favorites in the genre is the simple oldie but golden: “...I need a brick, perhaps a brick like you...”

Having taken a self-taught crash course (ok, with more than a little help from youtube!) in laying bricks and then blocks this summer to build myself an outbuilding, boy do I now wish I'd discovered this guy.
I mean... I learnt, I built, I'm happy with the result and my new found skills which will probably never be put to use ever again... but there's something about this guy even though he's technically not the greatest out there. I think partially the head cam helps, as you gain more feel for what he's seeing, how he's approaching it etc.
Despite wading through hours and hours of videos from the more celebrated channels of 'popular' brickies, in ten minutes I feel like this guy has somehow filled in a lot of the blanks that persisted in my understanding after the build.

Back in my day I would tend to two to three masons at a time. I've laid a lot of stone(and miss it so much), but I'm not a brick or block guy. Somehow I ended up setting, pouring and finishing concrete. I do however miss the shit out of a spade trowel, masonry can be so technical but it's so much different than concrete. If my day went south I'd come in with a hammer and chisel the next day and start over. Meanwhile if the pour goes wrong I'm working fast food tomorrow. Back when I was a mason we'd take two hour fishing breaks and work late to make up for it, stress free.
