Probably one of the best tutorials I have come across to date, cover every little detail and make it so you understand how to do it properly. Many thanks.
You are a wonderful teacher. Several times you mentioned, "This may be obvious," but NOTHING IS OBVIOUS TO A BEGINNER. So many teachers skip things that they do by instinct at this point, but you lay (pun intended) it out. Great work.
Very true, been an apprentice for almost 3 years and the only thing that has saved me is the desire to learn. Just as you said there are so many things that have become almost second nature to bricklayers that they automatically assume is common knowledge it’s unreal. And when new guys come into the trade and get yelled at for not knowing things they end up quitting. Here in Canada. The trade has a ton of work but it is in some ways dying because not many new people are coming in
I’m likely never going to lay even 1brick in my life. That said, I found this video fascinating. As a professional trainer, I was blown away by your patient and detailed explanations. Loved your humble humanity vs so many who use training to inflate their egos and showcase their skills. Well done.
I remember teaching a young fella years ago, how to spread mortar. Pick up a brick. Lay it. Keep it true and clean, we finished the days work, then I told him, "Now for the finer points of bricklaying, lad!" As I held the Bar door open for him at the pub! Also Engineers will specify frogs up for load bearing work, so it good practice to always do it! If you use damp proof membrane on a footing, make sure the footing is smooth, not rough. Thermal movement will put more holes in it than Swiss cheese over time! Good tutorial lad, and as he says it's all about what your comfortable doing. If your a young guy labouring on a gang of brickies. Watch what they do, it's good grounding for when the time comes and you get a trowel in your hand.
Absolutely excellent tutorial, really perfect for the beginner who has no knowledge of bricklaying! Now the real question is, how did I get here, and why did I watch the whole thing when I have no need to lay any bricks?! 😅
Haha same here. I went to B&Q today and got lost in the bricks and fences section. Then I came home and the first vid on my UA-cam was this. I actually ended up watching the it twice. Very detail ordinary down to earth tutorial.
I’m 68 and in lock down because of the Corona virus never laid a brick in my life but always wanted to learn and you popped up out of no where, you are brilliant at teaching I loved every minute and I have subscribed to go and watch the rest of the lessons thank you and stay healthy 👍❤️
I hope you're keeping well too? It's never too late to learn something new! My dad is 84 and still gets his trowel out every now and then. Glad to hear you are enjoying the videos 😁
I started my bricklayers course in college just yesterday and I struggled as I’ve never laid a brick ever in my life and now I feel I know most of the techniques to make it easier for myself thank you soo much you are a true hero
I thank you Sir all the details in your teaching I've been watching many videos because I been thinking about building a brick fence around my front yard with some kind of metal fence on top, you're teaching has given me the confidence I need thank you again Sir may God Bless You.
Never laid a brick in my life, but the weekend attempting to build some step in my back garden down. This is an amazing video, so a massive thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I want to thank you for going slow and going over basics Steps. I’m on the roof ready to build a chimney and it’s a small project but I wanted to do this right and I prepared everything like you’ve shown but again I want to thank you I plugged in masonry for beginners and others, taught, but they went fast and skipped the rudimentary steps of the trawl. I want to say you’re very good teacher
I wanted to thank you for the fantastic and accessible training videos! I have never laid a single brick but needed to build a block wall to close off garage door, these videos gave me the confidence to try and even if I say so myself... the wall came out very nice and tidy. Keep up the videos, great job 👍
Good informative video, Rodian. Easy to follow for the would-be apprentices watching your channel.👍I remember my first couple of days on site as an apprentice in 1984 my journeyman just gave me a spot board full of mortar and had me loading the trowel and spreading a bed on the board over and over again for both shifts! I was thinking WTF have I let myself in for, but it was the perfect introduction to the trade, make the trowel an extention to your arm and it makes the rest of the job so much easier.
I was the same when I started. Just wanted to lay bricks but had to roll around the muck for what felt like weeks until I was allowed onto blockwork 🤣🧱👍🏻
Arrived at this video a few years too late…..but if you can’t lay bricks after watching this video, then it probably isn’t for you. Just about everything covered in an easy to understand way. I used to work for an old boy when I was a nipper and he more or less taught me the same things as this. I’m not a bricky but I’ve never forgotten what he taught me. So glad I watched this. Cheers fella…great video! 👍
You're a really good teacher mate; explaining and expanding on things as you go along as well as showing how to practice. Always fancied having a go at bricklaying - you give me the confidence to have a go now. Mucho Cheerzo!
Rodian Builds ill give it a go at my college as I’m a beginner on a construction level one course, just seen ur vid on how to make a corner, that information was well needed, keep up with the great vids because I wanna see more 👌🏻🤘🏻
Rodian Builds Joeybuilder0114 after I watched this yesterday I thought I can do that easy but then my neighbours had a party and got very loud and annoying so when they all passed out I popped into his garden and laid a few bricks of my own if you know what I mean I had a big shit on his brand new decking is what I mean that’ll teach em to not invite me I mean be too noisy oh yeah I need to mention I had explosive diarrhoea Hope this helps your query
I’ve been watching my albañil for years- Ufa. I’ve learned how to lay tile, roof, I still do plumbing, wiring, carpentry. Sew, crochet, knit, cook hahaha draw, brew beer, oh lord- now I am going to give this a go!
I just wanted to thank you for your posts! I spent a few hours last night going through how to mix mortar and how to true up lines and today I went out and rebuilt my chimney. Now, no one is going to recruit me for a brick layer's union, but the job is completed and I won't have to be ashamed to walk into my house. I also got compliments from my neighbor who is a retired contractor! Apparently I at least looked like I knew what I was doing! Thank you for making it doable.
Started general building just over 10 years ago, and, long story short, am retraining as a brick and stone layer, ad it's my favourite. Very informative videos, and am living the informative and professional content. Enjoying starting with new eyes and teachers. Thanks from Shropshire dude, and keep up the good work!
Great video. I love bricklaying and do regret that I never learned this trade. I'm stuck and bored in an office job whereas with bricklaying you get a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. It's hard work but I think it's definitely worth it.
Where are you now? I’m a gardener but fed up with the non permanence of it and everything being back to how it was a few weeks later. I am dying to change careers to brick laying but don’t know where to start. I’m 34 and have two young kids so can’t afford to be an apprentice
Thank you I started my course 2 weeks ago and the teachers dont really teach they just let you crack on and keep messing up, I think I have learnt more in the last 10 minutes than I have in 2 weeks Thanks again I will be watching all of your videos xx
For a guy who came through college and showing us what he was taught from the basics, he really turned his education into one professionally well explained tutorial for a beginner. I would love to teach like him. He does it in such a friendly way that I could watch, in fact I will watch, this again and again... Also, check out his cool clothing line and merchandise up close, it's really nifty...He's certainly got me subscribed to his channel...
hi guys. back to the daily grind? hope you enjoyed your holiday. just back from Tenerife. I been laying bricks for nigh on 40yrs and I still watch all rodians and your posts. only bricklayers will underdtand this mentality. ps - big push lads and its Christmas. ho ho ho.
harry godwinson . Evening Harry . We never even went in today it was that bad 😳. I’m sure I speak for Rodian too when I say it’s very flattering to hear experienced brickies enjoy our channels too 👌🏼🧱👍🏽
Congratulations to this young man, he is an expert in depicting all the important details of the dynamic actions needed to build a good brick wall. He is an honest man and he has the right logic, reasoning and rational thinking that is not always appreciated in classical education. Well done young man.
Its so difficult to explain like this, i can sense the struggling but it was explained brilliantly. When you have done something for so long, it just happens and when trying to explain it, its so hard right to explain how you do what you do, you just do it. As with many trades it is not the obvious, it is the tiniest little things that matter and those were all thought about here. Awesome and exactly what I needed for some younger people and in a way now, myself as a recap.
RE FROG: When you mold a brick, part of the mold is called the kicker. The kickers in the mold help push the clay into position, it takes out air and makes the brick solid. The Dutch word for frog is "kikker". So you have an English person teaching a Dutch person (kicker), who then translates that to frog ad teaches an English person ..... Frog sticks,.
About to attempt to repair a low brick wall that a delivery driver knocked the corner off... Mr B is busy, so here I am teaching myself basic bricklaying 😁 Thank you so much for your patient, clear explanation!
Dang it, just saw one of your updates which included your beautiful wife Hollie's health and her veggies and sunflowers. Praying hard! Also well done re Macmillan, I organised a coffee morning a few weeks back. Wishing you both all the very best xx
I am an ex-teacher. You are a superb communicator. Very thorough and extremely detailed... a born teacher my friend. Thank you for your expert tuition.
I just looked for how to build with bricks I will be moving to a new home and want to be able to build a wall and a few other repairs to brick work Your presentation on tools and method are so clear I can’t wait to practice with sand and lime first 😊 am english but moved to Poland.
I'm an apprentice carpenter and we do a bit of everything. I've been helping build a brick wall and I'm so fascinated by the skill involved in bricklaying. Fantastic tutorial mate.
Great teacher. The importance of attention to detail and accuracy are a revelation and the results speak for themselves. Again I learnt a lot. Thank you!
I've watched all of the brick laying you tubers and whilst they are all great at their trade I've gotta say Rodian you are by far the best at explaining how its done.Who wants an extension built Im ready to start building ! Colin, Plymouth
Boy, I am from America and I have to look up half of your words HAHA , but damn I am happy. Thank you. I feel like I might be able to actually build these side steps myself.
Awesome dude thank you. I'm in my 40's and aiming to start a bricklaying apprentice this year. Your channel has been helpful and educational to me on this journey.
Thank you so very much, that makes things a lot easier for a beginner like me. That's very helpful. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. I highly recommend this to all diyers.👍
People who disliked it would not put muck on the middle bit! You should be teaching this - what you do is art! I would really like to try bricklaying once!
The actual term "frog" comes from the dutch word "kikker" Traditional brick making consisted of a wooden box which a "kicker" in the middle was used to force the clay out wards to form the arrises. Apparently 🤷♂️
Iv been told this too every 3 frogs back 1 brick and the used the kicker to do this and it was also to keep the weight of the brick down due to importation tax apparently 😂
I'm on my first trimester in my manual education. So we tried everything that my school offers. I chose bricklaying. And honestly watching these videos make me so impatient. I start my second trimester in 6 days where I will officially start the theoretical and practical work. As a young immigrant in my country there aren't many other that chose this line of work in bricklaying so im happy and proud to know I'm going to be one of the few firsts. The government is trying tog et more ans more to chose this path and it makes me so happy
This is great thanks! I have actually stood and watched a bricklayer building for me at my home and doing the 'PERPS' wrong, as you have pointed out last year and when I questioned it, he just shook his head and 'effed me off' ! I knew at the time it couldn't be right, but I trusted him as he is a friend. I am a plumbing and heating engineer, and my limit is some steps and walls in the garden and bricking up old balance flues when installing new boilers, but I always take my time to make a good job. Obviously this is your craft and you make it look easy, as I do with mine. I really appreciate the care that you put into the work, as there is obviously a degree of science involved as well as a lot of skill. Many thanks
Fantastic tips, I had not thought of much of this like getting plumb and in-line with the course two down. I might have a go at this for my raised beds in the garden. Many thanks.
The actual term "frog" comes from the dutch word "kikker" Traditional brick making consisted of a wooden box which a "kicker" in the middle was used to force the clay out wards to form the arrises. Kikker comes from the lowlands of Belgium and Holland and simply translates into English as frog and has nothing to do with leaping frogs!
Well i finally lay 2 courses today for the first of our raised brick flower beds. The beds are only 5 bricks high but i didnt have the confidence until i found youe youtube channel by accident.. A big thanks for giving me the confidence.....👍🏻
Thats nasty of you to say that and bad mind. He did this video and I'm very grateful, everyone has their way suits them and we can either take or leave it. It shameful how others find it easy putting others down.
Constructive Feed Back Comment (hopefully) lol 1. If you like the background music in this video please hit Thumbs up in this comment 2. If you dis-like the background music in this video please hit thumbs down in this comment. Don't hit the level HAHAHA there are only two types of bricky when it comes to not hitting the level, those that do and those that lie and say they dont lol
Had a couple of people saying to cut the background music out. Interesting. Cant believe steve and alex had someone stop watching because you hit your level 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hello bud, just wanted to say thanks. I’ve just finished building a 3.5m by 1.0m retaining wall to raise our patio. Followed your instructions/ tips and had a crack. Bricks didn’t go down very quickly, but I took my time checking as I went. Confident to have a go at any garden stuff, but think I leave the house building to you professionals. Thanks again bud.
This man takes the time to check which side of the brick is nicer.... Thats what we call _craftsmanship_ and stories say people all over used to have it and took pride in it. Also, The actual term "frog" comes from the dutch word "kikker" Traditional brick making consisted of a wooden box which a "kicker" in the middle was used to force the clay out wards to form the arrises. 'Kikker' in dutch translates straight to 'frog' in english.
No way, thats awesome. Could you put a link to the website in a reply to this comment please? I'd love to see yhe website. Always interested to hear how people have found my channel. Glad to hear you enjoyed the vid 😁🤙🏼
Fair play pal. Things I can't do annoy me massively and you've inspired me to have a go at the activity right at the top of the list. Thank you so much for this informative and usable guide. It's just a matter of knowing how to pick up the trowel and get stuck in and whilst I'm not quick its looking pretty good. Massive pat on the back to you feller!
Incredible instruction. You Sir are a pro. Will be watching this many times. I have a project I need to do. I need to hire a Pro. Wish you lived close. Thank you
Thank you for the tutorial. Now I can build my first brick flower garden bed. BTW, your brick laying skill elevated to professional level and accent are hot!
Looking to add raised brick garden beds to our companies services this year. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain techniques. I feel far more confident watching your videos other than anybody elses. I am going to do my first trial this week at my home and will be using your videos to guide me. Thank you again. Be safe out in the field Sir!
Thanks so much for putting these videos out mate. They're exactly what I envision every trade training video should be; amazing video quality, showing all the techniques in every intricate detail, with full explanation behind everything. Thank you for not being selfish, and for sharing all your years of experience and skill with us in a format that evidently strives to teach people something and not show off. So many videos are labelled "How To", "Tips", and "Guide", but are nothing more than tradie-masturbation videos which start with some esoteric, self-congratulatory industry lingo with no clarification, which then cuts to some time lapse footage of the job sped up so it's impossible to glean any understanding from it, and then ends with a perfectly formed finished work that looks professional, and showboats the creator's skill, but offers nothing to the viewer.
Awesome presentation!! You take nothing for granted, showing all the little nuances of laying brick. Great job! I am confident I can do the job I have planned; just building a planter box, nothing structural but I feel equipped and am excited to get started.
Absolutely perfectly explained. Thanks so much. I just left you a subscription. I've already learned a lot from you. A great channel. Keep it up my boy. greetings from Germany
Excellent instructional video! Very well done and informative! Subscribed! Planning to do a brick staircase off the side of my brick patio. I've done some minimal bricklaying in the past on some home projects, but your video has shown me what I was doing wrong and how I can improve on my technique! Thanks so much for this! I'll be returning for sure!
Really loving these videos, I've been a concreter for 3 years because I can't handle office or any customer related jobs because of severe anxiety so I've been really keen on getting started learning to be a bricklayer
Thank you Rodian, just shows how things can be done to perfection - Great Video, I am not a tradie, but I have done brick laying for my garden bed, now m getting ready to start my front garden edge
Loved the way you broke it all down and gave names to all of the slang/trade words. Having a go at this on the weekend and feeling much better about it after watching your vid. Shout out to your Suicidal Tendencies hat too!
Thanks for the great video. You explain it in a way that even the greenest of noobs can go out on a jobsite and look like he has a lot more experience than he really has, and get the job done right! The way people hold the tools and materials, certain movements and etc easily gives it away if you know what you're doing or not!
Blown away at the quality of this tutorial. Absolutely wonderful. Planning to build a small wall around a pump to keep noise down and I feel super happy with giving it a go myself. Well done.
Probably one of the best tutorials I have come across to date, cover every little detail and make it so you understand how to do it properly. Many thanks.
There is another excellent 5 part video,, the name is HOW I LAY BRICK.
Agreed
Seriously, nugget after nugget of how and why throughout! Thank you
You are a wonderful teacher. Several times you mentioned, "This may be obvious," but NOTHING IS OBVIOUS TO A BEGINNER. So many teachers skip things that they do by instinct at this point, but you lay (pun intended) it out. Great work.
Nothing is obvious to a beginner. That is a universal truth.
Very true, been an apprentice for almost 3 years and the only thing that has saved me is the desire to learn.

You're a natural teacher. This is easily the best basic tutorial on bricklaying I have seen. Brilliant.
75 years old and learning every day .. well done excellent skills and tuition .
Thanks Richard, I hope to continue learning every day myself. 🧱👍🏻😁
I’m likely never going to lay even 1brick in my life. That said, I found this video fascinating. As a professional trainer, I was blown away by your patient and detailed explanations. Loved your humble humanity vs so many who use training to inflate their egos and showcase their skills. Well done.

I really like the honesty of this tradesman , "there's a way i'm going to show you, that you should NEVER use " Quality content fella !
The way you teach/demo this shows you’ll be a great father someday. Respect.
Absolutely excellent tutorial, really perfect for the beginner who has no knowledge of bricklaying!

Im in college doing bricklaying and this has helped me out very much I'd like to say thank you for new tips and methods I've learned today

What a smart guy and an excellent teacher. One of the best tutorials I've seen on any subject. Get this guy a segment on Richard and Judy!

The frog is a term used for the indentation of a horse’s hoof. Great video by the way.
Great teacher. The importance of attention to detail and accuracy are a revelation and the results speak for themselves. Again I learnt a lot. Thank you!
So satisfying to watch. I appreciate the skills of the tradies.
Veg helpful for a bricklayer who has just done his first week at college- thank you
Thanks for taking the time to watch buddy, glad to help 😁👍🏻🧱
Thank you so very much, that makes things a lot easier for a beginner like me. That's very helpful. I can't wait to watch more of your videos. I highly recommend this to all diyers.👍
First Minute: That triangle stone laid into the background wall kept making me wonder why the play button wasn’t going away
J E me too ! 😂
😂😂
People who disliked it would not put muck on the middle bit!
You should be teaching this - what you do is art! I would really like to try bricklaying once!
The actual term "frog" comes from the dutch word "kikker" Traditional brick making consisted of a wooden box which a "kicker" in the middle was used to force the clay out wards to form the arrises.
Apparently 🤷♂️
Iv been told this too every 3 frogs back 1 brick and the used the kicker to do this and it was also to keep the weight of the brick down due to importation tax apparently 😂
Sorry but i don't get the connection between "frog" and "kikker"???
Google it
The Dutch word for frog is kikker
👍
@@az276 Klinker is a Dutch term for brick- being the sound it makes. Baksteen is the Dutch word for brick.
personal experience ok so why is it called a frog ?
A solid no nonsense tutorial. Thanks for the down to earth language.A great help.
Great video as always but please leave out the background 'music' - your description is so worth listening to without the 'tap tap tap' distraction.
A couple of people have said they dont like the music. Thanks for letting me know 👍🏻🧱
@@RodianBuilds Now three people have said they can do without the music. Thanks for the video and explanation.
Or, you could use Pink Floyd “Another Brick In The Wall” for your background tune.
That's awesome to hear! Hope you enjoy it even more when you start learning and get the trowel in your hands. Let me know how you get on 😁🧱👍🏻
When you watch the North American bricklayers on those competitions, they always tend to leave a void on the side of the brick when buttering up.
Many thanks
I cut with the tip not the heel it's faster and neater.
A big thanks for giving me the confidence.....👍🏻
think it's easier to just lightly tap the level 😂
That's how you break your level. Take care of your tools and they will take care of you
Thats nasty of you to say that and bad mind. He did this video and I'm very grateful, everyone has their way suits them and we can either take or leave it. It shameful how others find it easy putting others down.
You are a brilliant natural teacher. Very precise and thorough lessons. Thank you . PaperClip nailed it. Satisfying work.
Constructive Feed Back Comment (hopefully) lol

Don't hit the level HAHAHA there are only two types of bricky when it comes to not hitting the level, those that do and those that lie and say they dont lol
Albertdog101 😏 guilty .... I had one clown who refused to watch any more if my videos because I did it 😂😂😂🧱👍🏽
Had a couple of people saying to cut the background music out. Interesting. Cant believe steve and alex had someone stop watching because you hit your level 🤣🤣🤣🤣
HAHA did they take their ball with them when they went home in a huff lol. How childish can some people get lol
Love this! Brilliant teaching from a top bloke 👍👍👍
'Kikker' in dutch translates straight to 'frog' in english.
was linked to this video from a link on tarmac's website - nice to see a big company supporting proper advice from a youtuber
No way, thats awesome. Could you put a link to the website in a reply to this comment please? I'd love to see yhe website. Always interested to hear how people have found my channel. Glad to hear you enjoyed the vid 😁🤙🏼
Very clear and accurate tutorial. Will now go lay some bricks.
Without a doubt best beginners tutorial I've seen on UA-cam!
Hands of the master and a great teacher... Sir Winston loved to lay brick...
Wow wow what a brilliant teacher? Every detail explained thoroughly. Very impressive and well done. Keep up the good work
Looking to add raised brick garden beds to our companies services this year.
I greatly appreciate you taking the time to explain techniques. I feel far more confident watching your videos other than anybody elses. I am going to do my first trial this week at my home and will be using your videos to guide me. Thank you again. Be safe out in the field Sir!
Glad to hear my videos are helping you. Hope the trial goes well and you get the raised garden bed done soon 🤙🏼🧱
Really good tutorial. Every step is well explained and easy to understand for a beginner/novice bricklayer.
This video brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
Best tutorial ever for a newbie DIYer like me. Thank you.
Absolutely perfectly explained. Thanks so much. I just left you a subscription. I've already learned a lot from you. A great channel. Keep it up my boy. greetings from Germany
thank you for encouraging people like me who are no so sure how it can be done very informative and easy going
That play button made of bricks in the background is so cool!!!
Extraordinary skills with beautiful design Greetings, a hobby, my friend from Saudi Arabia
Thank you Rodian, just shows how things can be done to perfection - Great Video, I am not a tradie, but I have done brick laying for my garden bed, now m getting ready to start my front garden edge
Good information showing all the necessary steps for a novice
I’ve signed up for a bricklaying course and am a bit nervous. This has made it less stressful by seeing the simplicity behind it. Thanks!
Superb video! Great for me who only wants to rebuild 2/3 bricks on a garden wall. Very informative and say to follow.
Thanks
Great video for people wanting to learn bricklaying
Justin brickright 👍
So helpful, everything explained and made so simple to understand for someone that has never picked up a brick before !
Thanks for taking time to share. I’m planning to make a outdoor bbq and worktop. Your tutorial is very helpful
Blown away at the quality of this tutorial. Absolutely wonderful. Planning to build a small wall around a pump to keep noise down and I feel super happy with giving it a go myself. Well done.
