I like the idea of Imbued Hunters being disempowered post-Gehenna. It suggests a few possibilities, like maybe they were never meant to eliminate the supernatural but to be agents of balance, and once “balance” or equilibrium or whatever is restored they are no longer needed. Or maybe like the Time of Troubles in DND, Gehenna has fundamentally changed the nature of metaphysics and how their powers work, and so the Imbued need to essentially relearn or reprove themselves to get their powers back. Also interesting is wonder how Imbues who tied their powers to love of family reacted to the loss of those powers.
I would combine the more Imbued hunters clashing with regular powerless hunters that might have the opinion that EVERYTHING that is more powerful than regular humans are abominations and need to be hunted down. Cuz when all the monsters have been killed, are the Imbued really needed or do they become a potential threat?
I like Hunters Hunted best. I like the idea that you're more likely on your own. Even with the SoL, the characters seemed more isolated, the situation more hopeless, and therefore the need for heroes more vital.
I know you dislike the reckoning version, but I managed to run a full chronicle with the backdrop of some of the Gehenna/Apocalypse happening now and then. I did use some of the vigil's one off plots that they used to make back in the day. A gluttonous gigantic spirit feeding off the suffering happening in a hospital comes to mind, and something which easily slotted into my reckoning game with the characters having to deal with that situation.
I hardly know the official hunters, I made up my own types and kept them pretty mysterious. I like the idea of these global superfactions, illuminati, templars and dragon (from a game), the primordial forces of the wyrm, weaver and wyld and a lot of combinations of them. These global networks of (wannabe?) puppeteers all infiltrate each other, double and triple agents breaking off setting up their own organizations and fights within any organization becoming more important than its actual mission. In my main gehenna campaign metaplot that I'll tweak later, the antediluvians either ascended, merged or left a legacy. The war is ongoing in the (middle) east but left a power vacuum everywhere. The camarilla elders (4th and 5th gen) may have created their own niche inside these metafactions. I'm thinking of hybrid curseborne horrors, metaphysical but with ties to hidden chantries or tomes. Guiding future mages against their enemies, to promote a certain worldview or to corrupt them (perhaps some where baali all along?) What remains of hunters everywhere will be a mix of loremasters, spies and holy warriors, all of whose world will be upside down. Losing powers, gaining others, but most of all figuring out who to trust and who to fight. Time for weird alliances too.
@TheGentlemanGamer Awesome you read my long comments now after all. 😁 I was struggling with how the Masquerade would eventually fall and what that would mean for the supernatural. Wouldn't humanity unite to eradicate them? But reading the bit about how everyone kinda knows about magic and curses, like everyone knows raccoons exist is a very strong concept. No secret Harry Potter ministry to keep everything secret from "muggles", people don't really want to know. Even if they see traces of magic or of raccoons, what does that have to do with them living from paycheck to paycheck... You can tie all conspiracies together, but wouldn't it be even scarier if magic and curses just were everywhere at random? What can you do? I might change some huge and global plots to more regional and less orchestrated. More mysterious that way too.
Personally I enjoy the Chronicle of Darkness games, as it's easier to run cross line games. I have a group that is comprised of 2 vamps, 3 wolves, a mage and a changĺing. That party in og World of Darkness is a migraine.
I want you to know that Vigil is the better Game. And the new Edition 5 is just a lazy copy of Hunter the Vigil. And I liked first Edition more than Edition 5. But Vigil blew my head away, and I mixed it with Precinct 13. And Precinct 13 was so unbelievably good.
Vigil hit that Hunters Hunted vibe I liked so much from oWoD. It always felt like the Imbued were...it's hard to put it into words, but even _more_ ignorant of the supernatural world than others? Hunters Hunted and the Vigil hunters didn't have that same problem. And yeah, Hunter 5E is something I've heard very little positive about. Weaker than the Imbued (which is just appalling as the Imbued IMO needed a ground-up rework), lacking the options that Vigil characters could get for powers or edges or whatever, and explicitly stating that all Compacts are bad and wrong so it's just your cell against the world. Good luck with that in a world where Pentex exists!
