the technical term is syncopation, he's alternating his rhythm which stops it sounding like a shred fest playing straight 8ths or 16ths

Philip Sayce is good but for some reason his playing and songs just don't quite do it for me...that being said I'm going to see him in a couple days so maybe a live performance will change my opinion :)

I think the thing about his music is that every time I listen I feel like I've been on a journey to another place. When the notes are dying down at the end, I realize I'm back. Saw him live in Philly, amazing. Watching his various collaborations, I feel like he is slowly changing music. He is so good, other artists on stage, really stretch themselves.

if you take the singing out you could quite easily rap to this,its the pace of the song that gives it that old school hip hop vibe
i cant see it but i'm not familiarized with the hip hop genre...
I've seen in an interview with Gary regarding this album that he tried to incorporate a lot of elements of hip hop into the style...it shows in quite a few songs from the album
