I Make A Jewelry Box for my Future Wife.... I Hope
Вставка

- In this video I take an old TV stand a client sent back to me, and turn it into a beautiful jewelry box for my girlfriends 30th birthday. I use Wenge wood , which is awful, and white oak to make the hand cut half blind dovetail drawers. I use a router to make all the slides, and I take a hunk of solid brass and use basic woodworking tools to make custom drawer pulls.

Remember kids. Jewelry boxes are for day-to-day jewelry. Put your heirloom or expensive stuff somewhere anyone walking into your bedroom would never bother looking.
Yes, Or sell it for woodworking tools!
Hmmm sounds like you have experience in stealing jewelry.
11:36 Handy tip I ran across years ago, has saved many a finish for me: Keep an old toothbrush on hand. The bristles are perfect for raking toward any bit of debris in your wet finish, and scooping it right up out of there. Plus the lines they leave are so light, they'll usually flow and fill right in, or with minimal retouching. Give it a wipe with a damp rag (damp with water or whatever the solvent for that finish) to clean the bristles before it hardens, and you can re-use it for every project.
Love that you show the mistakes and how to fix them, I'll keep this in mind for next year haha
Turned out amazing!
Haha hell ya dude! get it
great job. Looks amazing, that's the reaction your after once you've put all that hard work in.
Yea ! Thank you so much
Very nice John. Great to see a project involving hand power and fine detail work like you did here. Just surprised there wasn't another gift inside the jewelry box to further surprise her. She had a wonderful reaction though. And don't you love those 4 words of "Did you make this?". Kudos dude.
Haha yea man it was great! She loves it!
Looks great, John. Love the inclusion of the brass! Also, I wish my mistakes were so easily fixed! Great video, brother
John,
I have made multiple gift for my wife in my journey as a woodworker. Isn't it great to see the reaction?
Beautiful craftsmanship in this project, and wenge itself is awesome.
Nice work.
Thanks so much JD, She is loving it and so am I!
Him mentioning brass dulling tools reminded me to sharpen my steel working tools 😆
The contrast between the wengé (that's how we write it in the Netherlands) and the oak is so beautiful!! My brother in law made two furniture pieces for his graduation with both oak and wengé. I think I will make some out of wengé and oak or maple or something as well! Keep up the good work!
Nice work buddy. Lovely reaction too, there's no greater feeling than your work truly appreciated by a loved one.
Yea she truly loves it
Love to see some one show genuine appreciation like the woman in the video did.. nothing motivates like gratitude
You’re lucky your girl likes you to build her stuff! Mine is always complaining about getting “stupid wooden stuff she doesn’t need” every holiday lmao
Flockin’ beautiful work! Love the handmade brass pulls.
thanks Blake !
Dude, that is gorgeous. And, you made your hunny happy. And you "Reclaimed" good wood from a South bound project. Win, Win, Win, Win, Win. Just awesome, my friend.
Yea we're super excited!
Nice build John, your girlfriends response was awesome, totally appreciative!! Thanks man!
I think your best project yet. I have made a ton of jewelry boxes like this and like to use shellac as well. If you are using the blonde shellac I think you may find using a rattle can shellac a lot more forgiving and infinitely easier. 4 or 5 light coats, sanding in between and you are done. You can literally apply the next coat in 20 minutes.
I can’t believe a client sent that thing back, I’m going to have to look for that podcast, I want to hear that story......Thanks again for sharing this.
Dave
So glad you enjoyed it David!
Great job on the build! Had a lot of fun watching it, i really need to do a project with dovetails. I'm glad she enjoyed the gift, although i'm not surprised, it turned out really great. Thanks again John!
ya dude you gotta try some dovetails, theyre awesome!
OH NO! You told her age! You better build a dog house now! You'll be in it lol. Just kidding. Good job. Love your videos and how you edit them. Keep up the great work!
Hahaha shes proud of it! I got approval haha
@@John_Malecki lol awesome! Wish ya'll all the best!
Who are the 4 sorry souls that disliked this video. That box came out amazing. Thanks for all the kick ass content John. Love the channel!!
Thanks MIke! im sure you can scroll the comments and find out some gems haha
Sara your a lucky lady good looking and works with hands !! Good job on the jewelry box love it..
Thank you i'll relay the message !
Perfect gift and the perfect reaction! You NAILED it! 🙌🏼
First you tell her age, then you finally make her the personalized jewelry box she wanted, so you make it out of scrap lumber. Oh my, you have chosen the hard path my friend. Lol, the box turned out beautiful.
Hahaha she doesnt mind at all
Phenomenal work John! Hopefully one day I’ll get to your skill level! Keep up the great vids!
Just practice! haha its not that hard! crush it
I don't think that could've gone any better! You deserve it. That was a really beautiful tasteful design
Great work all around! Really loved the simple design of the drawer pulls. At first I thought you would drill and screw them in. The angled design is so much cleaner. Might have to borrow that one. Congrats on the engagement!!
Yea the dovetail is quite clever!
Most appreciative wife ever
Beautiful build ...and congrats to you both!
Thank you so much !
This is so cute and the box is beautiful!
Thanks again for your craftsmanship and making this jewelry box for your wife.
That turned out awesome. When you were doing the first bit of routering I was thinking “ dude you really got to get Makita’s cordless router” but then you bust that out later on. I have one and absolutely love it.
Hahah ya i keep specific bits in each one and that one just happened to have the up spiral
That's flocking cool!!
Fantastic job - looks great.
Thanks so much !
It's extremely beautiful 👌wish I had tools and wood that you guys have 😊Thank uou

@@John_Malecki is that the stuff that splinters like crazy? Dart sized.

It turned out really nice! Glad she loves it.

Her ring will look good in that box :)
hahaha yes it will
This was awesome!!
Your skills are awesome that jewelry box looks mint
Great, informative video. Really like the project. I teach high school woodshop and would love to use it in my classes if that is ok. Thank you.
Sure show em all!
Gotta be honest, I fully expected her to open on of the drawers and there would be a ring in there. Great work, never heard of wenge but it's a beautiful wood.
reclaimed wenge?? Thats a first! Nice build brother!
Very attractive jewellery box very nice 👍
Nice work man. Happy wife happy life!
I heard that rumor somewhere
Those brass handles rock!!
Thank yoU!
Really great build, I've never actually watched anyone do the flocking before.
yea its a cool process
Curious to why the prior people didn’t like that tv cabinet
probably cause it looks like a walmart media center but instead of carboard is made out of hardwood
Nice work!!!
Thanks Igor!
So pretty. You knocked out of the park. Lucky girl.
Couldn’t tell from her reaction. Did she love it? Cool project!
As soon as I saw you as a metal worker you put on a sweet spin move into a woodworker... Jimmy Diresta 2.0! This box turned out amazing!
Hahah hopefully someday i can be 1/5 of what jimmy is haha
@@John_Malecki something tells me you have that spread covered already. Sand bagger! Well played!
In case anyone's curious... the black powder being added after the black paint is called Flocking Powder (or Flocking Fiber).
This was beautiful. I think I might try to build something like this for my wife. Her birthday is in July, so I have enough time to mess up 2 or 3 times first haha.
Hahaha for sure have enough time !
@@John_Malecki four kids and a full time job away from woodworking. Dont jinx me lol.
Nice build!
You killed it - well made!
thank you !
So much hard work ur doing bro
you know it !
interesting... I usually go with PINS first for through dovetail, but never seen this technique on half blind. very good job overall
Yea it was stupid. I completely regret that choice hahah
Cool stuff John,
Thanks Marcel!
Hi John, new sub and bell ringer here. Great looking project and great music too! Really jealous of your shop though.
Thank you! appreciate the sub!
great build!
Thank you Daniel!
Fantastic job! Was wondering if you might have a link to the flocking you used in the drawers? Thanks and as always, keep up the great content and work!
Good day John, I have to make a jewelry box for my mother in law. I searched UA-cam and found your video.
First, i love love love the classey brass tab pull outs as it really contrasts the dark wenge ! Fantastic work.
I have a question, the main box....do you remember how thick you made the walls ?
Keep up the great content !
It's clear that your wife love it and happy with it , and you know what they say , happy wife happy life .
Nice job man! Congrats on the engagement as well
Thanks Adam!
I've been watching these videos for about two years and I'm just about to attempt two jewelry boxes as christmas gifts, wish me luck
nice work John
Thank you Yusuf!
Beautiful!
Did you put the flocking right into the paint?
Great build! Love her reaction to it. What did you use to secure the glass to the wood?
BEAUTIFUL job, John! Really nicely done!!! 😃
For her own good it's better she's still with you!!! 😂
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
This woodworking book *TopFineWoodworking. Com* contains a great deal of details about woodwork. There are some designs in the book but it is primarily explaining the procedure of how to do various things and what tools to use to accomplish them. In general, this book fulfilled my basic desire to learn about wood working.?
John...You made something beautiful for the most special person in your life and you shared it with us. Thank you Sarah. John... wood glue, how does it work? Can you tell us about it some time?
I would love that band saw! Nine will only take a 1/2" blade and can only cur 5" high.
Great video!!! Love the details 2 questions when are you going to get a small mill for your brass work, and the second WHY DIDN'T YOU SING YOUR POOR LITTLE HEART OUT!!🤣 love your jig the songs sounded like Chris LeDoux!
hahah I dont know if i have room for a mill quite yet. and i was singing the whole build, it just didnt make the edit hahah
Hey, I change my mind again, I want that entertainment console now.
Nice flocking work!
Thanks Scott!
*Me who`s attracted by exotic wood and Handworking*
Oha! thats a really beautifull present! You´re a little bit like me, i show loved people my affektion too by making something with my own Hands and a bit of my soul. because everything you made habe some soul of you😊! I hope your future Wife like it as much as i like it.
LG Lara
I dig it.
Thanks Hazem
What in the heck is that flocking tool you used?! That's neat! Great job man I want to make someone like this for my wife. But in bed side table type of way!
Only found your channel recently and I'm watching your backlog. What episode of the podcast? I wanna hear the story!
Hey john, funny thing is i just picked uo a piece of 4 quarter wenge. 5" wide by 6' long. Cost me $98... i wasnt in the market for any. The piece caught my eye and automatically like 5 ideas popped into my head so i took it. So yeah, you're right saying it's expensive. And that piece you made had alot. I deal with just designers. No clients, and when they mess up its on them so they can watch there commission go bye bye!! Not my problem. You kinda have to be like that though. Especially in new york. Someone has to pay for my time and materials. I don't eat any of that unless it's from my own doing. Which has happened a time or two....lol great job on the box & congratulations with your lady.
Sounds awesome!
Nice work. How do you ensure that the drawer runners are exactly where they need to be?
What was the black powder you used for inside the drawers? Really nice job!
Great build as always! With a gift that nice, she might just marry you haha! Those dovetails look awesome too!
She said yes! So we’re on the right path gaha
Anyone know what the product is that is used for the lining in the drawer boxes? And how that product works/holds up?
excellent work, can I ask you something, what finish did you use for this job?
Do you add glow before joining the parts that looks like a puzzle ?
Nice work. What was the black powder you used for the inside, and how do you keep the powder from rubbing off?
What happened to the blog post for this project? It's not listed on your blog anymore, and in this video I'm having great trouble trying to figure out the thicknesses and sizes for each piece of wood you're using.
What did you mix in with the shellac?
