I Installed an English Sash Window in My French Cottage... and It Was Easier Than I Thought!

- It's finally time to install the first new window at the Gardeners Cottage. I have never installed a window before, let alone a sash window... How bad can it be?
For anyone searching for the same paint as the window. Here is the link.
The colour is called Ambleside, and the finish I used is Toms Oil Eggshell
The colour appears different in real life compared to the website.

Yes it’s a new camera, I bought it last year. about the same price as the new windows 😭, but as they say… buy once, cry once. it will capture the beauty of the chateau in all its detail.

The window look stunnig. Love the paint on the outside and the oak inside.
My only suggestion, Michael, before securing the window frame into the hole is to put a wide bead of caulking on the surface of the brick, then insert the window and pressing the window into the caulk; this will help prevent water and wind infiltration around the wood frame and brick. Follow up with another bead of caulking on the outside of the frame and brick, forcing as much as possible between the wood frame and brick, again to prevent water and air infiltration. I'd suggest oil base caulking, NOT silicon (you'll get it off if you have to remove it later. Good luck.

It looks beautiful! What a solid wind that is. Just out of curiosity, do you not have flies & mosquitoes where you live? In America you have to have screens on the windows, and screen doors, or the flies will get in and annoy the hec out of you. And the mosquitoes will eat you alive. I love the color of the window, and door. I love that your dad & Billy both came to assist. It's hard to believe your dad is coming up on 80 yrs old. He's like the energizer bunny. Your family, though I'm sure are not perfect, are really a dream family. Good job on the window. 👍🤗

You may regret using cord for the sash and weights. When I re-did the windows in my 1900 commercial building I fortunately only had to replace the sashes as the window frames were still good, so I had replica sashes made (45 windows, 90 sashes). Instead of cord I used a brass chain. You would see the chain used in upper scale homes for the sashes - the plus for using the chain is that it never breaks like the cord eventually do, an added plus is that the brass chain just looks so much better and richer. I would think these window frames have sash pockets that can be opened from the window side to access the weights. My frames had sash pockets that you could open then I pulled out the weight (had to use fishing string and a small weight to thread and pull through the chain then attach the weight, pull up and hold at the pulley with a vice grip and then attach to the sash with short screws (no nails). I had parting stop pieces between the sashes (front and back) (three total). Anyway, those are nice looking sashes. Did you have double pane insulated glass installed? I used double pane glass in my new sashes, causes you to have to increase the weight to balance correctly.
The cord is a modern type with a strong nylon core, braided on the outside with cotton and waxed. Hopefully it will last longer than old fashioned pure cotton type cord. I looked at the chain, but it’s far too fancy for a little gardeners cottage.

The window looks great, and I love the exterior paint color. I can hear you, Florian. 😊. Perhaps you can get some goggles to protect your eyes the next time you have to use the grinder. Please keep in mind that led is very toxic. Make sure you clean up the dust made by cutting so that the dogs don't ingest it accidentally. Wearing gloves would also be safer, so that you don't absorb any lead through your skin, especially if you have cuts. Perfect timing with the rain!
I cleaned up all the lead so the doggies are safe. Next time I will definitely use gloves.

Hmmm, Beatrix’s would have been completed in 1/10th of the time and had far more whimsical charm and heartbeat . This is ultra boring .... could look so much better . I watch these channels because I like the people that are making these vlogs and sharing their lives. I enjoy them for what they are - and always come away feeling like someone, an ocean away, is out there trying to live their best life. It makes the world feel a bit smaller. I do like your writing - a good mix of poetic and snarky. I just think you may be watching a channel that doesn’t suit your tastes.
