Aes is sitting in his car, outside his therapist's office, obsessively unpacking how he got to this point in his life, procrastinating because he doesn't want to go in. But he goads himself into doing so, leading into Shrunk, which details his combative dynamic with his therapist. Followed by Kirby, wherein he follows his therapist's advice, essentially. It's a trilogy, in the middle of the album.

I think it depends on how you approach it. Most of the time I listen to a "new" song for me, I don't really delve into lyrics, I'm just taking in the atmosphere/mood the music and cadence of the person singing, as well as the surface lyrics, it's only after a few listens that I tend to think about the actual lyrics and the deeper meaning behind them.

The video is just beautiful. Dancing with death.
I think "Skelethon" was all heavily about Camu, and Whiskers, his old cat ("Friend of man, foe of mouse"), who died about the same time. I really worried about him with the Whiskers vids, whether he was just coping in a disturbing way, or using Whiskers to process Camu's death, or seriously losing it. Camu Tao basically kinda held "Definitive Jux" together on some level. Check out the "King of Hearts" album that got produced after he passed by El-p. That was before he hooked up with Killer Mike and formed RTJ. Camu was a "genre buster", meaning he could rap, sing, produce, provide advice etc. He was an inspiration for many. Check out "night hawks" with Cage also.

The way this works in the context of the album is dope because this is his conversation he has with himself before going to see his therapist which leads into the next track which is shrunk about the actual appointment. Numbing yourself down and avoiding processing the situation to avoid pain, easier to do than open up and acknowledge the issue, but it stops you from truly living, knowing is not half the battle, but is required to enter the battle, the battle in this case would be digging into his own psyche and finding out why he can't process events and move on in a health direction, his current actions are damaging himself, he knows it, this knowledge doesn't make the struggle less hard, in fact knowing you are failing is harder than ignoring it, hence 8 years of self imposed emotional imprisonment in a muted experience of life.

The "Lost in the wake" line is actually a triple entendre.
Wake as a nautical term is disturbance from manmade vessels that create unnatural waves, a sudden change outside of one's power
Wake is also a term for an event in funerals, it's the viewing of the body before it's buried forever, where loved ones gather and remember, a last look at this person and the ideas and moments you shared
Wake as the simplest term however; opening your eyes, standing up, seeing and hearing the world, and having to be here

This song really highlights the magic of this record. Aes has always been brilliant but at times its hard to decypher his lyrics so on this record he really stripped back his word choice and was much more transparent about the pain that he was in and the self reflection he forced himself to do when he packed his shit up and moved into a barn in the boonies so he could clear his head and record this record. Every song is just so much more direct and personal than his earlier works and even when the beats are dope af theres still this sad yet hopeful tone to it. You can really hear the pain but tell that he's genuinely trying to figure out how to get his life back. It's a gorgeous record and really gave me a new appreciation for Aes.

I always thought "waiting for a boss key with a hat fulla bills" was talking about waiting for the opening manager to arrive and unlock a dead-end job just barely covering the bills - itself metaphorical to the stagnation of sitting in the car, not wanting to walk in the therapist's office - at least for somebody like Aes. A similar dread; anticipating the start of a rough shift - or the start of a therapy session you're not sure how to trust. Getting out the car is literal, but also metaphorical in terms of breaking one's own chains and barriers, whatever they may be.

    Amazing and astute insights!!!
    My own two cents:
Aes may have been reflecting on the cumulative disassociations (possibly derealization as well he chronicles both) coinciding with his not being able to process Camu’s passing. He observes his thinking as he disassociated (one day...) as well as looking back (...package of clogged up chakras). This process is hell on the conscience which also coincides with Aes chronicling his experiences and observations

"This album is dedicated to Camu Tao"
That break in $4 Vic...chills every time. Camu was doing some wild shit, sonically and stylistically. There's no telling what hip-hop lost when he passed. His collaboration with Cage, Nighthawks, is crazy underrated, as well.

It's seems like a personal struggle with depression as a result of the cancer related death of a friend. To the point he shuts down, becomes self destructive and alienates himself from his friends and the world. Which makes sense for an artist that is clearly unique and on an island of creativity during his good days. I can personally relate to this stance and more over I shut down for a decade almost as I swam into the darks waters. Thankfully it seems like both of us came out stronger on the other side. His new stuff has been fire and seems rejuvenated. Obviously my interpretation of this could be completely off base but it's how this track spoke to me. Thanks for video, love your break downs and input. Take care

Mu is Camu Tau. Aesop's best friend. He died of lung cancer. He touched on it in his album Skelethon. The Impossible Kid was very much an album he did for therapy. If you listen to the album it's such a story. But apparently he had friends turn on him during the whole thing.
I suggest listening to Crows 1, Racing Stripes, and Water Tower. He talks a lot about how he feels.

"You can own what you are
And still sit around stoned in your car
Not doing shit, halfway to nil
Cranky and waiting for a boss key and hat full of bills"
I read this very differently...to me it paints a picture of a person who, despite achieving personal knowledge, is still working a dead end job they hate that they have to get stoned to muster going to work while they wait for the boss to open the shop...and the hat full of bills is the meager wage they're sacrificing his short time left on earth for.

If you want more context there's about two more tracks to listen to. Aesop weaves the narrative of accepting he's not ok about his friend dying (get out the car) while in front of a shrinks office. He goes in but is skeptical it'll actually help .(shrunk) though he commits to it anyway. When he realizes the prescriptions and sessions don't work his therapist tells him to get a cat (kirby) really worth it to listen to these tracks back to back. It's soo good

Been listening to Aesop Rock since about 2005 or so. My favorite thing about Aesop Rock, is attempting to break down his lyrics. Sometimes he tells a story, and it's simple, like the song- no regrets, I have heard of it commonly referred to as "Lucy". Most of the time it sounds like he is on a heroic dose of mushrooms and somehow he has tapped into another consciousness lol. either way, it's like a puzzle.
