    Just came into the market for a board like this. I was at Retallack , BC, Canada and had my ass handed to me on a Burton 168 flight attendant. They loaned me a Nitro 154 Pow board. I thought NO WAY, I'm way too big for it. It ripped!! Conditions were pretty good powder but had to stay in the tight trees and on both low and steep grades. The tight trees is where the short board shined. I'm 55 years old, been riding sense I was 19. I'm 5'9" and 225lbs. I think I'm going to go with the 156, but also the 161 is tempting. I am also scoping the Pow Wrench 158. I've ridden long boards for so many years I'm behind the times on board length. Thoughts? Thanks for the reviews!!

      @TracySwenson Рік тому

      @@thegoodridesnow Thanks for the feedback. Size 10 in my Salomon's and 10.5 in K2 boots. . Quick turning in steep trees is what I want. I can make it work for the open slopes if that comes along. 161 to 156 is really only 2 inches after all though. Thanks ...!

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Рік тому

      sometimes millimeters matter in snowboarding so 2 inches is a lot. That being said I think you would like the 161 better. It is a very fast turning board. I'm a size 9, 185lbs and 5'10". The 156 felt a little small for me in really deep low angle pow and I was considering getting the 161. At 225lbs and a size 10-10.5 you might find the 156 even smaller than I did.

      @@thegoodridesnow Thank you. Just barely touching this subject still, can you recommend bindings for this board? I have not done the research and can if there is not an easy answer. But do I have to use Burton Chanel (EST) bindings? I will but wonder if there are other options. Will be ordering the soon (if it's in stock) to get some laps on it this season before 1st tracks at Retallack next year again.

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Рік тому +1

      No you don't have to use EST bindings. You can use Re:Flex or any other binding out there in the industry as long as it is channel compatible. I rode it with Union Atlas and that felt great. So would the Union Force, Union Strata, Cartel X Re:Flex, Genesis Re:Flex or Cartel Re:Flex or Rome Katana's and Salomon Holograms. Don't go EST. You are stuck with Burton channel boards then and it's always good to have a binding that works with the other 95% of the industry as well.

    Great review, thanks! I’m much more of a surfer than boarder and am always pushing to see how short I can go on my surfboards cause I like that feel. Makes me tempted to get the 151 but sounds like I might regret it? I’m 5’11, 163 pounds, size 10.5 boot. You’d push me toward the 156, correct? This will be strictly a proper pow day board.

      How you like your fish @ 156? I'm bang-on the same specs as you and was deciding between the 151 and 156. I have a Batalleon Surfer (154) for pow but wanted to try a non-camber pow board to see if I liked it more. I particularly want to ride trees more and see how it fairs once the powder gets more ski'd up. Hope you like it! Cheers!

    Hi James,
    Been an avid followers for years and really appreciate your reviews, looking to be a Patreon soon.
    Just wanted to get your advice as I'm looking for a surfey powder board that I'll be using in Japan in 2025.
    I've only ridden the non 3D fish some years back and remember it being very floaty and somewhat surfy during my first cat ski experience.
    Would you say the 3D fish is the same? I weigh about 200 pounds and have 8.5 Burton Ion Step Ons and a Step On Genesis RE:FLEX.
    If you could also recommend sizing for the 3D Fish and whether this is what I'm looking for or whether I should look elsewhere?
    Thank you

    Burton 3D fish is actually smaller than a 156, more like a 154. It’s measured/marketed as if it had a full tail. You might like the 160 more…Not sure why Burton does this

    • @thegoodridesnow

      Stand it next to a traditional popsicle stick shaped 156 and you’ll see that the fish is smaller. Also confirmed this with a friend that works with boards and bindings at Burton.

If you plan to ride less than perfect pow, see more steep terrain, and tighter trees maybe go with the 151 but it will feel small for you on deeper days. Fish turns faster in powder but the Dart, if sized correctly is close. On groomers the fish turns much faster but it's much more boring to turn than the Dart. They are very different boards though and aren't very comparable.

    Nice video. Considering a fish. Would you suggest Est malavitas or est cartel x?
    Also thinking burton freestyle board. I love my 2022 custom camber but recognize its limitations. My 2007 burton royal all mountain freestyle board is feeling crazy heavy and lacking some tech since i tried the 2022 custom camber Would you say process flying v?
    Also my custom camber vs a hometown hero what am i missing out on?

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Рік тому

      Thanks! I would suggest neither bindings. Don't limit yourself with EST. I would go Cartel X Re:Flex because they work with other boards and have a better set back range for super deep pow days.
      I don't think you would be happy with a process flying v vs. a Custom. Maybe a Process Camber or even better the Territory manager if one comes in your size. For all mountain also consider the Cardiff Crane, Endeavor Pioneer, Jones Aviator or Frontier, YES Standard Uninc or Basic Uninc and a lot of other boards. Burton makes great boards but you will miss out on a complete life/quiver if you don't ride other boards.
      CC vs. HTH - CC has more camber/pop but HTH is close, is way more set back, more forgiving and has more float in pow. You don't need that though with a fish though. I would go Territory manager if you want something in between the CC and HTH for a daily driver.

    I'm 5'10/7.5US/165lbs, I have a 157 Korua Otto but it feels slow to turn on uneven terrain. I'm thinking of going to the fish 3D for powder/trees. Would you recommend 151 or 156? BTW I have a 155 Yes Basic which works fine for me. Many thx

      Yeah that otto is really wide for ya. I would have suggested the 153 or another ride instead. The 156 fish will feel great/easier to turn in epic deep pow. 151 is better for your boots and most normal pow days but its kinda small. I would say the 156 turns easier than your otto 157 though. Very informative video! Thinking to buy this exact same board for pow and I'm not sure how to size it as this will be my first fish-type board. I'm 6ft/183cm, 195lbs, size 10.5 boots and I usually ride 158-162 boards. As I mentioned, I don't have pow specific boards but I do have an all mountain camber board that I have sized up to 162 in order to ride pow. Do I do the same with this type of board or going a couple sizes bigger isn't necessary due to the shape? Thank you!

    I'm a little late to this video; how does the Fish (and powder boards in general) help alleviate quad fatigue? i.e. when I'm riding an all-mountain board in deep pow I tend to lean back on my rear (right) leg which wears it out quickly. On pow boards is the weight a little more evenly distributed on each leg?

    • @thegoodridesnow
      @thegoodridesnow  Рік тому +1

      The Fish and many pow boards are super set back towards the tail so they have more directional float. They also have a much bigger nose than tail. On top of that the tail is not as wide as the nose (tapered) so it sinks into the powder allowing the bigger nose to float easier. That is what alleviates rear leg burn. Some, like the fish, are soo good you don't get rear leg burn at all.
