I love how viruses are so polite...
They specifically attacked companies. That's why they gave "poor" people the option to opt out basically. It wasn't meant to go beyond these companies so if it did I'm sure it wasn't actually all that hard to get your files back after those 6 months (assuming the servers were still running). They even had a contact us option, probably so normies like us could cry to them and they can give you your files back, that way they're justifying their evil actions to themselves. Remember that most people aren't evil in their own minds and do have moral codes for the most part. Do one big, evil thing, then justify it by doing small things for SOME of the people you negatively effected, especially the ones with a good sob story. Must feel good to have "helped" someone who is a single parent with 3 kids and 2 jobs who can't afford $300-$600, while also having made shit tons of money off of other helpless people who may be in the same or worse position but didn't even think to try to cry to you. I honestly don't have much of a point to this, it's just really interesting to think about the psychology behind people who do these sort of things.

For max money: pay $300 to decrypt immediately or only pay $10 if you pass the virus to another machine (perhaps the virus generates itself with a special code. The person passes the new generated virus to a new computer via email, usb, or some other medium. The newly infected virus checks that the new computer is not a vm, maybe even check hardware id so the same hardware cant be used twice. The newly infected machine reports the generated code back to the server, and the server grants the cheaper price to the original computer).

I actually remember getting this ransomware. I remember that I went on my computer, and found that everything was the same as was shown in the video. Although, I was somehow still able to use my files. Yep, seriously, the ransomware didn't do anything. I think that my computer got the ransomware at some point, then 6 months later, the "free events" mentioned basically allowed my files to get unlocked. I was too lazy to change my background to something I wanted, so I kept it as the fucking ransomware background for quite some time.

A bit more information... first, not doing anything shady would not protect you from Wannacry. It spread by using exploits discovered (but not reported so they could be fixed) by the NSA. They were flaws in Windows that made it so that if you had file-sharing turned on on a computer facing the Internet without a firewall in between, anyone who knew how to use the bugs could get access to your machine. So the people infected had not been doing anything shady, they just had a poorly setup network.
Second, the way Wannacry was stopped is an interesting story. It would have been a MUCH bigger problem if not for some serious luck. A security researcher was poking around with the virus and noticed that it tried to look up an IP address for a certain domain name. The virus was doing this to try to figure out if it was being run inside a sandbox. A sandbox will usually just return fake answers when a domain name is looked up so that the sandbox can intercept the traffic instead of it going to its intended destination. So the program expected, if it was not in a sandbox, to get back an answer of "that domain doesn't exist." The researcher went and bought that domain name and registered it so that even outside of a sandbox it would get an answer. And that turned out to be the killswitch. That stopped Wannacry in its tracks and prevented it from continuing to spread because it thought it was being run in a sandbox and shut down to avoid detection.

Back in High School be and a buddy of mine had an upcoming English exam (it was a danish school) that was supposed to cover the subject of hacking & viruses... This video was a big source when it came to our knowledge, which we presented in that exam... I specifically used this virus as an example for our presentation.
I clearly remember our teacher was pretty convinced purely of the technical terms, which mutahar used in this video, that we also used ourselves... Anyway, my point is that Mutahar had a source so good that we managed to pass the exam greatly x)

I used to get into sketchy shit to get cracked games and stuff.. whenever I ran into Ransomware I'd just turn off the computer, pull the hard drive and plug it into a different OS and copy my files back over lol..

When you were talking about them being gracious, they probably are. Our business got hit with a ransomware attack because our IT guy set up a network that was connected with another business, and once that business got compromised, it came to ours. The guy that we were dealing with, despite us having to pay around $10,000 USD (multiple decryption keys were needed), worked NON STOP for literally 3 days in a row for 6-8 hours at a time. There was a bunch of issues during the decryption, so he was remote assisting to make sure everything was working. He had mentioned that he personally doesn't like using ransomware, but where he's from, it was either that or the opium trade. He had also mentioned that the reason why there's a high chance of people running away once they receive payment (which he could have done, since he had the money first and then spent 3 days, and like 20 hours total working with us) is because he and the other people that use the ransomware have to pay the developer of the ransomware for each decryption key that they get. Basically, they wind up with very little of the money you pay, since they have to pay the developer of the ransomware in order to use the 'service'.
Our housekeeper is from Venezuela, and we know how hard she works (she's like fam hehe); I've seen how cartels treat other human beings in videos and know that me being born in the West was lucky. Even though we lost a decent chunk of money and rendered our business inoperable during our busiest week of the year, I still can respect that the guy that gave us the ransomware actually treated it like a real job. It made me think of how hard of a worker he'd be if he lived up here in Canada.
So yeah, it's not out of the ordinary for them to be genuine people, since they're doing it out of necessity. The developers of the ransomware that sit atop of a throne, raking in millions, deserve to be summarily shot, though.
Edit:
I forgot to mention that the guy told us exactly what the passwords for our systems were, and went out of his way to change them for us and give us the password list as well as a link to the AV that best defends against ransomware in the future. He genuinely treated what he did like an actual job, and it made me feel like that he does that to kind of trick himself into thinking that he's doing the job of those guys that analyze system security.

It wasn't legitimately trying to downgrade my computer. It just changed the visual settings to look like windows 95 and slowed it down a shit ton. It was like 10 or so years back so I cant remember what it was. All I know is it also installed adware on my pc too.

Thankfully my father's PC had all the important files ,the games that was on my PC and whatnot so I wasn't that afraid to factory reset my PC ,now it is clean and fast

My brother so paranoid with his computer he keeps several different drives at the ready if something goes wrong with one of the others
Redundancy is great, but against viruses like this it won't do anything to protect your files if the hard drives are plugged into your PC. The best way to protect against ransomware is to have offline backups(meaning not connected to the network or your PC) that you update weekly. If your PC gets infected, at worst you'll lose a weeks worth of files. It's bothersome if you use your PC a lot but losing a week worth of files is preferable compared to losing all your data.
