I scrapbooked as a child. Captain Kangaroo was one of my first cut out images in the 50s. I’ve saved hundreds of images in various ways, but let’s face it- mostly big piles. Last winter I brought all my boxes and stacks together to sort or pitch. I used those 3 drawer Sterilite containers. I separated them into categories like animals, birds, garden, landscape, colors, holidays/seasons, people, places, things, miscellaneous, etc. I can label the drawers and just grab whatever drawer I need. I put all the drawers downstairs. Problem is, the weather changed, the season changed and I decided I didn’t want to go downstairs where it was cold. But, my journal was calling. I whined mentally and decided to skip the images. I had to be strict with myself since I had invested time and money on the sort and so much space over the years. I told myself if I wasn’t going down to get them then I would tell my son to pick them all! “Use them or lose them!” I put on a sweater and marched my butt to the basement and grabbed my fall/Halloween images and so much fun using them. Sorting them was such a help and made it more enjoyable. I still have a stack of recently pulled images. I save them until I grab a new drawer or have a few minutes. This way the task doesn’t take a long time. I love Daphne’s Diary, Better Homes, National Geographic, Ranger Rick, Birds & Bloom. I miss Oprah and Martha Stewart. Fortunately, I had subscriptions and have plenty set aside. I really like your videos.

I take any magazine or catalog I can get my hands on, my scissors (the ones I can find at the time), and a gallon ziploc bag to use while I'm "watching" TV. Keepers go in my bag and I have a trash can handy for the scraps. Sometimes, I do get that iffy feeling about some of the scraps and they go in the bag too!!!!!
I've found some photos I love in Country Living. And I love the colors in HGTV...they always feature different front door colors, which are a fun element!
One of the things that I use the most from magazines are color blocks on pages of advertisement where they'll be large places of beautiful colors and I put them in page protectors and in a three-ring notebook which I can go to when I need a particular color in a collage or a cluster or just to put somewhere on a page in my journal. I also cut out images and magazines that I like and if they're thin I back them and then I fussy cut them and again I store them in a three-ring binder with page protectors that I have sown on to make pockets of different sizes. It's just so easy to look through these binders to find what I need. Somehow I had quite a collection of architectural magazines and fashion magazines. I also use from catalogs especially there is one that has Victorian style things in it
I left out the Smithsonian magazine. It's wonderful for old photos of people and places. I can use them as vintage. This is a magazine I subscribe to. Also the Saturday Evening Post. 🖌🎨

I am a magazine junkie. My favorites are BH&G, Cuisine and food magazines, Travel mags, Victoria and Country Living, National Geographic and Daphne's Diary.

@@MargareteMiller I get Birds and Blooms. Yes, it is a gorgeous magazine. I often find it difficult to decide which side of the page I like the best though because both sides are so beautiful. Many of the pictures in this magazine are large so you need a larger gluebook for them, in my opinion. But I love this magazine. I also really like the HGTV magazines.
My town has little happy libraries where people leave books, magazines, dvds, etc., to share for free. I found a wonderful magazine there called Reminisce. Lots of vintage photos and ads.

Thank you for the inspiration as always! I have collected favorite magazine pictures for years. I have my work cut out for me literally 😅. I finally bought clear envelopes through Amazon and organized by theme such as flowers, animals, architecture etc. I needed to store them in something I can see through. I don't like boxes or anything solid I can't see through. It works for me!

My local Library sells old magazine's for ten cents, so I buy quite a few there. I always buy the Victoria, when I see it there. I use the flower pictures, especially the Rose's. Lots of architecture, castles and store fronts. Hats, gloves, all kinds of things. The Library has a large selection, so I always find something. I enjoyed seeing your glue books. My local thrift store used to sell magazines for 10 cents, then I started going in and buying a stack at a time and they quickly increased their price to 50 cents, then 2 months later to a whole dollar!!!!! I was not thrilled, but I still pick some up at that price because it's cheaper than buying them from the bookstores.
Love your style! I have been clipping magazine images for YEARS! I have been somewhat of a “collector” as I have yet to glue them down anywhere!! Because I probably have hundreds of thousands of images that I have clipped, I have a variety of ways to store the images. Some people store their images in baskets on their desk. I actually have a rolling cart that probably has 10 drawers in it that easily come out and sit on a desk. Each drawer is themed of course. So I have a theme for backgrounds, people, jewelry, interesting items, food, etc. Another way that I store my images that is a little more portable is in Ziploc baggies. Also at the dollar tree they have these clear vinyl inserts for three ring binders that have a zippered section and also a side flap for smaller images. I used to use a coupon organizer for my smaller images, but that thing got fat fast! Another thing I have images stored in are the very large plastic containers with lids that you can purchase at dollar tree. I’m not talking about the shoebox size, I’m talking about the size for food storage. They usually have a blue lid and are super stackable and lightweight. I would love to hear others ideas for storing images. But I’m sure more people use their images then store them! One of these days I will get to using mine also! I did just purchase several composition notebooks for $.50 apiece at Walmart. There is no excuse now! TFS

I do use magazine pictures! I use travel magazines, women’s magazines and some vintage National Geographic. I also have cooking magazines! I store my images in a mishmash in a file folder. I drag it out and spill it everywhere!😆

Holy Smokes, Margarete, I've subscribed to do many magazines now, I don't know when I'm gonna have time to read them, much less harvest them!!! I love the Victorian ones, too. Food mags, birds and blooms, cats, fashion, architecture, travel, etc. It never dawned on me to make the junk journal out of magazines and then just layer with more magazine clippings. That's brilliant! What an artsy fartsy tome you can end up with! I think I really must DO this! 🥰🤣❤️

I loved watching your flips and your process. I do prefer matte photos and I get many of mine from Bella Grace Magazine or vintage magazines , the ones before they starting using glossy paper . Thanks for the tip about matte medium .
I especially love the tourist "guides" published by cities and states. I have made junk journals from them and they are fun to use and challenge myself to get creative using the variety of pictures and text. It is addictive.

At the same time I can gift out subscriptions with the offers I receive. I live in a tourist area so I am able to grab free bro. Finding unique words I can use in my Junk Journals. I always love your videos and your style! I use the same magazines and types of publications that you have mentioned. I've tried a variety of storage options, but what works best for me is several cheap but flat tray-like containers that can fit one on top of the other. For smaller images I actually use used clear veggie containers, such as what grape tomatoes come in. I can fit a bunch of trays into each other, which takes up less space when I'm not using them, but separate them and flip through all the trays when I'm in a collaging mood.
I love the idea of stacking trays. I think that sounds like a good solution. I have nesting trays, but just 3 of them. I'm thinking I need a few more 😉👍💙
I love travel magazines, Animals and Plants, Vogue and other model magazines, and Architecture magazines. Two years ago I recycled many magazines and I could have used them today. This happens all the time to me, if I get rid of it I need it a few weeks or years later. It is hard to get old magazines they are now expensive in thrift stores and my library gives old magazines to schools. Anyway, thanks a lot for your video.

I'm doing your weekly collage, Margarete, using only magazine images. The journal itself is made from two magazines that come with my Saturday Times newspaper. I glued the mags together, stuck two pages together throughout, as they're very flimsy paper, and added cardboard front and back for covers. It works a treat! Thanks for your ideas. Mx
I like to use the ads and images from Workbasket and Popular Mechanics magazines from the 1950-60s. I liked your video, Margarete. I love going through magazines and cutting out images while I'm watching TV or UA-cam videos. I find it very enjoyable. Currently, I just organize them into baggies by themes - people, trees, home decor, vintage, ads, etc... Thank you for sharing this video.
I love magazines. I also love all the junk mail I get. I get a lot. I like using the words in the magazines and junk mail. It is really good stuff, and the paper is really nice. I like your journals.
I've tried to cut out words, but it feels like a lot of work to me and so I go back to just using images. I admire your patience in cutting out words! 👍

My way of storing magazine images & words is always in flux...ever changing & adapting as I go! 😉
Very similar to what I do in my glue books, I even use food wrappers. Daphnes diary is great for images, garden magazines, I cut people out of clothes magazines, paper serviettes (napkins) are great for backgrounds and so are torn up book pages and postage stamps.
Thank you so much for this video. It's the very the answer to the question I sent you just a couple of weeks ago, about mixing magazine images with other papers and digital printables. I do have to say that when I use magazine pages in glue books, I use the matte medium first, let it dry, then glue it down. If I glue the piece in and then cover it with matte medium, I find that the paper bubbles. Again, many thanks for sharing your expertise.

I have a pile of pictures I'd taken when I was in a world-wide photo game for several years (so I have quite a few). @@51andhappy44 mags like Vogue and Cosmo, that are glossy , lend themselves to gelli printing very well, even if they are older. Try it, the graphics are great!

Hi Margarete, I tried to use a Life Extensions magazine in a collage. I used Beacon 3 in 1 glue to glue it down and used Matte medium on top and all the ink faded and ruined the image. Is that a particular magazine problem? Or did I use the wrong products? I've been afraid to use magazines in my art work since because I can't seal it or work over the top. I thought about trying to seal it with a matte spray sealer first then glue and use matte medium?
Hmmm. It sounds like the wet glues are some how effecting the magazine images. Have you tried any of the pastes? Yes Paste is popular. I have a jar and do use it. It dries very flat. I almost never put a top coat on anything. I don't mind if my collages age a bit on the top. Is there a reason why you want to seal them?
@@MargareteMiller I don't always seal my collages but if I'm putting paint or acrylic markers on top it's a safety so if I make a mistake I can remove it. It works with everything but magazine pages. I'll just have to make it my last layer them I won't have that happen. Thank you for responding
Hi, I'll bet it's the 3 in 1 glue! I've got it and it takes my nail polish off immediately because it contains acetone. It's some strong stuff!!!!! If you stay away from it you'll probably have better luck.

I got it to use when making my junk journals because the absence of water keeps my pages from buckling, which is very effective in that situation. However, as you've said, I did have it react in an unusual way with some specialty paper that I bought online. I'll try it with a PVA glue. Thank you for sharing

I store my magazine images in a bankers box (cardboard file box) in folders by theme…women, men, backgrounds, objects, etc.

I loved watching your flips and your process. I do prefer matte photos and I get many of mine from Bella Grace Magazine or vintage magazines , the ones before they starting using glossy paper . Thanks for the tip about matte medium .
I especially love the tourist "guides" published by cities and states. I have made junk journals from them and they are fun to use and challenge myself to get creative using the variety of pictures and text. It is addictive.
Thank you for the different concepts. I subscribe to magazines from other country. Such as Britain, Scotland. I did find a magazine from Alaska. Still waiting to receive. At the same time I can gift out subscriptions with the offers I receive. I live in a tourist area so I am able to grab free bro. Finding unique words I can use in my Junk Journals. I always love your videos and your style! I use the same magazines and types of publications that you have mentioned. I've tried a variety of storage options, but what works best for me is several cheap but flat tray-like containers that can fit one on top of the other. For smaller images I actually use used clear veggie containers, such as what grape tomatoes come in. I can fit a bunch of trays into each other, which takes up less space when I'm not using them, but separate them and flip through all the trays when I'm in a collaging mood.
I love the idea of stacking trays. I think that sounds like a good solution. I have nesting trays, but just 3 of them. I'm thinking I need a few more 😉👍💙

I love travel magazines, Animals and Plants, Vogue and other model magazines, and Architecture magazines. Two years ago I recycled many magazines and I could have used them today. This happens all the time to me, if I get rid of it I need it a few weeks or years later. It is hard to get old magazines they are now expensive in thrift stores and my library gives old magazines to schools. Anyway, thanks a lot for your video.
Thank you for the inspiration! I have so many pages from VISI magazine (South Africa) which is a decor & design mag. It has the most beautiful photos and the paper is recycled so it has a wonderful texture!
I'm doing your weekly collage, Margarete, using only magazine images. The journal itself is made from two magazines that come with my Saturday Times newspaper. I glued the mags together, stuck two pages together throughout, as they're very flimsy paper, and added cardboard front and back for covers. It works a treat! Thanks for your ideas. Mx

I like to use the ads and images from Workbasket and Popular Mechanics magazines from the 1950-60s. I liked your video, Margarete. I love going through magazines and cutting out images while I'm watching TV or UA-cam videos. I find it very enjoyable. Currently, I just organize them into baggies by themes - people, trees, home decor, vintage, ads, etc... Thank you for sharing this video.

I love magazines. I also love all the junk mail I get. I get a lot. I like using the words in the magazines and junk mail. It is really good stuff, and the paper is really nice. I like your journals.
I've tried to cut out words, but it feels like a lot of work to me and so I go back to just using images. I admire your patience in cutting out words! 👍
Fussy cutting is relaxing to me. Ya, I am surprised by that too, but once I started in, I enjoyed it.

Very similar to what I do in my glue books, I even use food wrappers. Daphnes diary is great for images, garden magazines, I cut people out of clothes magazines, paper serviettes (napkins) are great for backgrounds and so are torn up book pages and postage stamps.
I think my favorite is gardening magazines. I never get tired of flipping through them, even the same one again and again.

I do have to say that when I use magazine pages in glue books, I use the matte medium first, let it dry, then glue it down. If I glue the piece in and then cover it with matte medium, I find that the paper bubbles.

If you use the good old white Elmer’s glue it’s even better than matte medium to get matte images!

I have a pile of pictures I'd taken when I was in a world-wide photo game for several years (so I have quite a few). Hi Margarete, I tried to use a Life Extensions magazine in a collage. I used Beacon 3 in 1 glue to glue it down and used Matte medium on top and all the ink faded and ruined the image. Is that a particular magazine problem? Or did I use the wrong products?
I've been afraid to use magazines in my art work since because I can't seal it or work over the top. I thought about trying to seal it with a matte spray sealer first then glue and use matte medium?
Hmmm. It sounds like the wet glues are some how effecting the magazine images. Have you tried any of the pastes? Yes Paste is popular. I have a jar and do use it. It dries very flat. I almost never put a top coat on anything. I don't mind if my collages age a bit on the top. Is there a reason why you want to seal them?
@@MargareteMiller I don't always seal my collages but if I'm putting paint or acrylic markers on top it's a safety so if I make a mistake I can remove it. It works with everything but magazine pages. I'll just have to make it my last layer them I won't have that happen. Thank you for responding
Hi, I'll bet it's the 3 in 1 glue! I've got it and it takes my nail polish off immediately because it contains acetone. It's some strong stuff!!!!! If you stay away from it you'll probably have better luck.
@@janc6495 thank you, I had wondered if that might be it. I got it to use when making my junk journals because the absence of water keeps my pages from buckling, which is very effective in that situation. However, as you've said, I did have it react in an unusual way with some specialty paper that I bought online. I'll try it with a PVA glue. Thank you for sharing
