I cannot tell you how many times I gave up on junk journaling because I’m like, “why am I doing this when I don’t even write in them!” This video explains the reasons and I love it! Every single junk journaling beginner should watch this video. Also, I love your furniture and pieces in the background. Thank you for doing this wonderful detailed video!
I enjoyed your comment because at least you un-stuck my eye roll. While I'm all for recycling EVERYTHING (despite being told by the guy who picks it up, "It all goes to the same damn place!) there is nothing on God's green earth that would cause me to find a way to KEEP the junk when it is hard enough to find enough time for it to all hit the "Recycle" bin.
My quick and simple answer is, "I enjoy doing it!" No one has to understand another person's hobbies. Each person must find their own bliss. This is mine.
Exactly. I’m not creative at all but you do not have to be to junk journal. I made my first one a few years back. I have made several since. 2 were for weddings. I made part of it as a guess signing book and the rest was for the Groom & Bride to fill out about their wedding and the first part of their marriage. I was scared t death they wouldn’t like it because I love them to be gators mouth and dripping with goodys and full of ephemera, but they both loved it.
@@PennyJomany years ago I made a wedding card, which ended up being more a journal (before I even knew about journals). From that one card I got several requests for others. I was worried that the bride would think, “great, homemade, how cheesy”. Years later she still tells me that she looks at that card like she looks at her wedding pictures. And I still get requests for cards/journals.
I can truly say it is therapeutic. My home was destroyed in hurricane Laura in 2020 and we had to live in a small trailer for almost two years. This was extremely traumatic. This is when I learned about junk journals. I made one about our hurricane experience (We stayed and were in the house when the tree came through.) Junk journals kept me sane and gave me calm while we were going through all the decision making and rebuilding.
First off, I’m so sorry for your tremendous loss! I’m so glad you found a way to deal with some of the trauma through art. Thank you for sharing your story 💜
For me junk journal making unintentionally become a form of grief therapy after my cousin and best friend passed away six years ago. I made several journals and shared them with friends.
I think you nailed it right on the head as to why a junk journal. I have made several, my favourite is to my late husband where I have made a journal of all his work sheets; car licenses any piece of paper that has his writing on, photographs all kinds of bits that would otherwise be hidden away in a drawer or thrown away , is now safely in a book dedicated to his life with me, I love it
@@susannahleopold6788thank you for that, my daughter wanted a tattoo to her father so she could incorporate his signature in his hand writing because I had a journal of his writing now on her shoulder❤
I recently found a pad of aviation paper and put together a junk journal for my granddaughter who is going off to school to become a pilot. She absolutely loved it and I am so pleased! We are putting finishing touches in it together. Her own creativity came out, we copied her college acceptance letter to use in it and some lined paper to log her fly time. I used an old blue book for the right blue color and had an old atlas for maps. Rubber stamps and stencils too. Such fun!
How thoughtful & loving❣️ Doesn't sound like a junk journal as it sounds thematic -personalized to your grand daughter's exciting career endeavour & quite purposeful!!
My mom passed away a little over a week ago, and as soon as I got home, I spent the next 6 days making junk journals for my 2 sisters and myself to capture memories, prayers, gratitudes, and write about my mom. They both loved their journals. I am still adding to mine. 💜
My deepest condolences to you on your tremendous loss. I’m so glad you had this skill of journaling making to focus your energies and create beautiful books for your sisters. It’s really amazing you could do that for you and your sisters. Thank you for sharing! ❤️
I'm so sorry about your loss of your mother. I lost mine 6 yrs ago, and there are still a lot of times I want to call to just say Hi! Or to ask her something about life. I started a scrapbook about my parents 3 years earlier, after Dad passed, and it helped, but I need to get back on it.
My parents died within 48 days of each other in ‘23 and I needed to process my shock and grief. These junk journals saved me during the worst of times I’m so sorry you lost your mom ❤❤❤
It is kind of a healing process. I lost my second baby four years ago. I was devastated and beyond consoling but then I found junk journaling. Granted, I did have God but I needed an outlet. I have always liked paper items. To be able to manipulate images, painting and collaging is such a broad meaning to take away from.
I'm so sorry for your loss but you know your baby is happy with the Lord now. I have loved paper since I was a young teen. Maybe I need to get back into this. But I lost most of my art things on a house that suddenly got overwhelmed with black mold. I'm scared to go get any and bring it here to use as it can spread anywhere you take exposed items.
It's difficult to explain to a non-artist why we create stuff. In my case, my mental health tanks if I don't break out the paints every day. Junk journals are a work of art in themselves, and in my opinion the cost of not doing them outweighs the time, effort, and cost associated with creating them. As long as you are not neglecting your loved ones, don't let anyone put down your creative work.
I feel the same way. I need to be working on something all the time. My hands have to be busy. It’s fun & good for me, then others benefit from the things I make too.
I'm glad you've figured that out about yourself and the benefits to keeping creative. And I 100% agree with you: don't let anyone put down your creative work! 👏🏼💙🌟
Being creative is a blessing and a curse, at the same time. I have to be doing something creative when I'm home. I've got many subjects I love to do. Outlets!!! Have to do it! And, it's fun!!!

Oh how I envy all who are creative! I love junk journals have tried my hand at it but I just don’t seem to be able to pull things together in a way that’s cute and fun.
I have many hobbies such as cross-stitch, knit, reading, wood crafting, refinished some furniture, crochet, puzzles and others but when i saw my first junk journal making video last year, I WAS HOOKED. The first one was The Paper Outpost. Pam turned me on to junk journal making with that first video and I've never looked back. I look at papers, envelopes, books, brown packing paper and anything close to paper in a whole different way. My husband will open his mail and had a place he puts all of the envelopes and papers with them in a special place so I can go thru them and get what I want. 😂
I love that you’ve got a constant supply of new papers to play with all the time 😉. How wonderful that you’ve discovered your love of junk journals 👏🏼❣️🌟
Love that I found this but I am going to add all the junk I have piled up around the house in drawers, files, boxes, albums, charts from cross stitch patterns I have stitched, book covers of those I have loved, maybe even put in a single earring of which I’ve lost the pair but adored. No order. Fabrics and wallpaper I love, etc. Just a place to reflect on my life at 65 years old!
@cynthia8022 I've been reading many of the comments left under this video and yours screamed at ME. So, to this BEAUTIFUL woman of a length in life of 65 yrs of wonderful LIVING, on this day I commend you for having an excellent beginning. Now you're choosing to journal your journey using stitched patterns, book covers from books you have loved on, fabrics of your choice, and perhaps adding an earring for a tassel because the other is misplaced. What a reflective journal your going to place into this WORLD 🌍
@@sonyacreel6600 Thank you! What a lovely note to find on this very hot and humid day. You took so much time to write that and it really has touched me. You must be a special young lady yourself. I send you blessings and hopefully, whatever brings you joy will touch your soul today and bring you peace and a smile. Now that I am retired, I do creative things all day long and I am at peace, where do you set form your roots? We live in Vermont, next to a private lake, waterfall and woods.🥰
Why make junk journals? Because it’s FUN to see all the beauty you can create with paper! And it’s serendipitous! “Junk” journal is not the best term (must be the alliteration that keeps it around), it has evolved and expanded over time to include many styles, materials and techniques. Anything goes! For me, it’s about being FREE from perfection.
I've been seeing junk journals around for a few years and I think they look amazing, but they've always been a mystery to me. I've never had the attention span to sort through videos trying to figure them out. Thank-you for putting all the info into one video and finally clearing it up for me!
Margarete: it is so clear to me why one collages in a junk journal, glue book or any thing else. Any time I get a chance to explain to someone about what it is all about, I use the words calming, relaxing, can’t make any mistakes, creative, free and cheap to do. That usually catches their attention. Haha. Carol from California
Caroltonzi29 I would not think it was relaxing and calming to make one of these books if I wasn’t allowed to make a mistake, lol. Would be in big time, anxiety, lol.
I'm always surprised when folks ask why or don't "get it." I think like many other hobbies or creative interests, you either love it or don't quite understand it. Great video Margarete!💙
I always loved paper crafts. When I saw junk journals, I dived in. While I love creating them, I find them a total escape when looking at them later. I’ve left a couple in Dr waiting rooms to help others take their mind off of the current situation.
I haven't made one in almost a year mainly because the antique store I sold them in went out of business. I finished the journal I was working on then went straight in to a funk. Watching this video has inspired me to start up my junk journal making journey again! I can't thank you enough.
"why would anyone do that?" that's not how art work folks, we just do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! art doesnt need to be functional or have a purpose. if you like how the idea sounds, try it and if you like you find your own reasons. nice video, i just LOVED IT
Making all these decisions is the exact reason why I love creating junk journals. I also have my son-in-law coming to me with his smaller empty boxes from his business. Once I showed him what I do with them, he got me and has been diligent about asking if I can use them.
How wonderful that you've got your own source for boxes (covers)! I love it when I hear of creatives who have family members who keep an eye out for materials. 😉 A good box is priceless, isn't it?!
For me making junk journals gives me a place to store ephemera, make collage and practice mixed media art. The Creative freedom you describe is accurate… especially the way junk journals allow you to use whatever you want as an “art supply “
Yep, totally agree. I love that anything is "an art supply", as you said. I love putting interesting papers in my pockets, like currency, for example. As long as it's flat, vintage, and pretty, I'll consider it 😉
I like your reasons. I prefer other creative outlets but at least I'm starting to get why they're called journals and what they can be used for, my limited exposure seemed like it was just about making it, not using it. Sometimes it's the journey, not the destination, but sometimes it can be both.
We are all different. I love waching people making junk journals, but it has to be functional for me. I am trying to make one now from a big paper bag and i am collecting the signatures now, but since this is the first time making a journal i find it really difficult. As they have to be functional, it is going to be my personal journal where each signature contains a topic i love, like autumn (photos, pictures from magazines, recipes for food to make in autumn), Christmas (old christmas cards, recipes, traditions, wishlists, photos of our christmas trees through the years, aso), education (copy of diplomas, class photos, friends from school, teachers that inspired me), one signature about my son, and so on. A book about me and my life.
The project is as huge or as small as she decides to make it! Also, she has as many years to work on it as she wants! We don’t have to be so busy busy in our lives. Another thing, if she does a book like this, she would have something to hand down to her children About herself and her life. I was the family historian among my brothers and sisters, so I got something like this right after my mom passed away. I learned so many things I didn’t know. I wouldn’t have ever known them because she got dimensions before she passed away and could no longer tell me anything. But when I got information from a book that I found that she had been keeping for me for after she passed away, I had a sweet treasure trove of hers. So the thing to remember is, don’t look for pages that have the categories on them that you want to write about. Write your own categories! Then put whatever you want on the page. You don’t have to be paid after page after page like a scrapbook. She could take one page that says recipes, and just put her favorite recipes on. Like her three favorite recipes, I don’t know and maybe which grandma started them. And maybe a picture you could still do this in a junk journal type of way. I know she’s got this! She doesn’t need to think of it as a project!
What a perfect video for me. I’ve wanted to understand the “how and why” of junk journaling and you did such a thorough job of answering my questions! Thank you. ❤
I don't make junk journals. I couldn't understand the point. But watching your video, I think what keeps me from enjoying something like this is that you almost have to have a collection mindset, gathering yhings that might one day be used in a journal. I like gathering pretty paper for card making. Other than that, if it isn't used promptly, out it goes! I have neither storage space nor mental space to gather little things like this. But if you enjoy it, great! 💛😊
Thank you for clearifying this topic. I love recycling things and using them in an unexpected way and I love paper and save and rescue every piece of it, I myself do envelopes with those papers, greeting cards and things like that for creative reasons and I do nature journaling. But I never got the point of making those junk journals and thought there might be some kind of "magic reason" for doing this. I got it now. There is a kind of magic to those people who do them.
So glad you are open to trying one. 👍🏻 They are a kind of magic, and they grow in meaning as you are assembling. The more time and effort put into them, the more special it becomes. 😉
Now I understand! I've been asking in the comments of other channels, "why, what's it for etc" and no one ever replied with an answer that clicked. You've explained and demonstrated it perfectly. I'm going to help my gdaughter make one. Thnx!
What an adorable little book! Junk journals got me through Covid lockdown. The colors, textures, and creative process is so relaxing and rewarding. My first was a large recipe book repurposed with pockets to hold my recipe cards, hand-written recipe pages and magazine clippings. I used long bookmarks to section it off so I could expand sections or move things around. Now I create them from food boxes, and use a hidden spine so the outer spine is smooth and hinged with fabric. Thank you for a lovely video.
I'm in the middle of making my daughter-in-love a Treasure Book (Junk Journal) as a companion to her Bible for study notes. I've made some for friends for all different reasons. One friend's an artist, so I made her one with plenty of pages for water colors, sketches, etc. When I gave it to her, I added a small travel water color set. Another was for a diary. The possibilities are absolutely ENDLESS!!! LOVE THEM ALL! 💖💖💖
Margarete, I thoughly enjoyed this video for lots of reasons. In a way it connected to your prompt for July "free". I find playing with journalling in whatever form, has a freedom about it. For my sanity I need to write about stuff, whether about events ( in what is basically my mundane life) or my feelings and moods. For me everything is connected to my faith and to include Gods Word is life giving. I hope anyone new to journaling will give it a go after watching your super video. Thank you. Pauline. Age seventy one and a half. X.
Thanks so much for your comments and kind words, Pauline❣️ You’re right. There is so much freedom in expressing yourself through this kind of art. I want to think about that more, but it’s a great jumping off point. Wonderful❣️👍🏼😉
Margaret, I resonate with your sentiments about creating journals. I collect so many items that I now need to begin construction. You have encouraged me to begin 🎉
My grandfather was way ahead of his time. He made lots of junk journals which I have inherited. I remember looking at these as a child and they always gave me pleasure. I must have inherited some of his talents as I love papercrafting, which is very therapeutic. I have yet to create a junk journal, but it is on my to do list. Thanks for video.
How neat!! How wonderful that you are the person to inherit them and appreciate your grandfather’s work. It makes me so sad when I go to estate sales and I see old family scrapbooks being sold.
I have a friend who LOVES to make them, and I LOVE to use them! I fill mine with scripture verses or other theological quotes. When I fill one it becomes part of my daily devotions or I give it to someone who needs inspiration in their life. Plus--they are soooo beautiful!
My reason for making junk journals is, WHY NOT ?...They are extremely fun to make and it's even more fun decorating them. I'm totally addicted to making big or small, eclectic or themed, it doesn't matter, if it gives you joy to create them, JUST DO IT.
Junk journals are thee best! You can put all your sentiments, fave sayings, prayers, concert tickets from past, movie tickets from a date, and it holds your keepsakes in one beautiful junk journal
I love the idea using the Priority box, brilliant. I'm always saving Amazon packaging. I like to repourpose the Little Golden Books. I made a scrapbook for my great dane that passed away, wedding albums, new baby. These sell, junk journals sell. Put a journal kit together and sell it. If you watch this video, Margaret knows what shes talking about and you still dont get it...watch more videos.
ADORABLE!! It's just so cute. I did a show last year and was totally surprised that most ppl never heard of these, and couldn't grasp the concept. If i had to explain them again I'd just tell them it's an updated form of scrapbooking. I think they would get that. I did sell 2. I've been a crafter most of my life and and I really think this is my favorite craft, I love anything paper. Hugs * L
They kind of are difficult to explain. It's a bigger concept if you've never heard of them before. I'm so glad you had some success selling some of yours 💜
This video has to be the best I have seen with regard to Junk Journals: the explanation, definition and subsequent examples on how to build one from nothing is superb. Thank you for the time you invested in making such a well thought out, informative and educational video. 10/10 with a gold star to match x
I love your explanations. I have been making junk journals since way back before I knew there was a name for them, it was not only the only way I could afford a journal, but rescuing trash and creating a useful item was therapeutic. Every page has memories before I even start writing, love them.
I love that idea of rescuing and reusing things that would normally get thrown out. I agree that every page has the potential to contain a memory. I love creating collages in my junk journals for exactly this reason. 💜
Really loved this video. Regarding your next theme, FREE, I got to thinking of so many ideas: free gift, free time, freedom, free thinking, free falling. I think you’ll have a blast with this topic. I can’t wait to see what you do!
Junk journaling is very therapeutic for me. It helps me to reflect and afterwards I have the energy to do all of my other adulting tasks. It’s fun, it’s energizing, it’s a creative outlet. For those that don’t find value in it, that’s okay. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
I call my junk journal "my joy journal"! Every time something or some experience brings me joy I write in it or attach mementos to the pages. Its so much fun to create them!
For me, it's an art journal. I don't write in them. I just enjoy creating each page. For me each page is a work of art. They reveal or reflect what my feelings are at that moment.
I love this little junk journal. Part of junk journaling is also using materials you love so that when you look back at the pages, it makes you happy. Thank you.
I was asked the very same thing today. I have made lots of them. I also made smaller ones at a class of kids who were going away to boarding school. My idea was they could have other kids leave their message as a keep sake to look back o. The girls were happy with their Little books.
Added thought: pages could be ZenTangle as art. I find this a superb method of relaxing. It blocks out all the noise in yr head, it allows the brain to focus, concentrating on what you're designing each stroke/line !!!
A junk Journal is bits and pieces of YOUR LIFE collected in a book. Tickets from a special event that you saved, a thank you note, a love letter, a random fun picture with a little history of the picture. Your favorite Scriptures, or small funny articles. ITS ENDLESS what can go into a junk journal. Not just meaningless pictures, that have no meaning. It’s about YOU, or the person you gifted one to. They are fun and fun to recap years later when you revisit your life with all your saved keepsakes. ❤☺️
This is a wonderful intro to junk journals! I will refer people who ask to your thorough and informative video. Thank you! I love the process of making a junk journal. Each one has its own personality, and some are just works of art in and of themselves that won’t be “used” in any way. I have purchased a few journals over the years just for their artistic (and tutorial) value! I had planned to include Junk Journal July in my current “memory-keeping journal,” but the thrill of creating a new journal specifically for July has changed my mind 😂. Really loved watching you make the small journal from the watercolor box and it turned out beautifully! Who can resist a good box?? Thank you, again, Margarete, for sharing your time and talent with the rest of us ❤
Loved your explanations and peeks at some of your beautiful books! Whenever I give a JJ as a gift, I include a note with possible use ideas: they can record passwords - important birthdays & anniversaries - a running list of events, vacations, milestones, etc. through-out the year…truly endless possibilities❣️
It took me a long time to do a junk journal but once I did, I was hooked! I love creating different things to put in them. I must admit mine aren't so junky, lol. I suffer from chronic pain, and it helps take my mind off of it (as much as it can) for a while.
Yes, and they can turn into a big project but it's okay because you do it a little at a time. I do, anyway. I like that I can spread out the tasks and squeeze out so much joy from working on all those pages. 💜
lol 0:17 this question is always asked with all paper crafts, they can’t understand, but crafts has always been fun for me. I’d like to know wer and who invented or started jj I think the best of it is seeing all the old vintage stuff 7:57so funny how we look at boxes, and what we keep, Rocky (chocolate sticks) lots of kool box’s
Thank you for this, I have people who still don't get it and I will send them to this video! Oh, yes... 'free' to me means using things I never paid for, found materials etc. Looking forward to seeing what you create!
I love making junk journals and then using them to explore different creative avenues. Stencils, stamps, inking, collage. At the end looking back at how I progressed is so exciting, very addictive!
Thank you! Recently I decided to make a junk journal to help me use up some of my scraps. Using a box as a cover seems so intuitive and easy and stapling too! So very helpful!😊❤
We do them to have fun and play with creativity and materials. To relax , yes. I look at them and they relax me just moving the pages. Furthermore I feel proud of the final result.
For someone new to the concept of junk journaling, the "messy" pages can be confusing. It takes time to process and appreciate the aesthetics of something new. We often take familiar things for granted. Junk journals have their own unique aesthetics, and not everyone loves them at first sight.
@@lechat8533 I get it . I’ m new as well and sometimes I don’t like the result . The point I wanted to make is that this is a hobby. And there is no need to be a reazon for hobby. 🦋
@@lole-21ruff63 Yes, I understood your point in your first comment :) I just wanted to add the view of those who don`t quite understand the idea of junk or art journaling. Happy journaling❤
I love using the junk journals that I make as glue books. I like to have a theme in each glue book. At the moment my theme is nature. Thank you so much for making this video. I love your videos 🇬🇧❤
I really enjoyed your video. It’s a great explanation of junk journaling. I especially liked how you took us through some of your completed journals and took a step-by-step in making a small journal. Thanks
Finally....someone has answered my question. My understanding is that a junk journal is a style of journal that has multiple uses (scrapbook, diary, etc.). And the purpose of a junk journal as opposed to other journals, is that one is supposed to enjoy the making process, and make it unique to their liking. Up until now, I thought that a junk journal was just a way to waste one's time and materials in order to create a book that is nothing more than....junk. Thank you for this informative video.
I love everything about junk journals, art journals, mixed media journals, and plain journals in general. I love making them and writing in them. Someday, hopefully my children, will read my thoughts at the time, but if the books get brought to a thrift store, perhaps someone might take an interest. I'm doing it because I love it and the end result doesn't concern me at this time.
I agree with you and think that’s the way to do it. Even if my kids have no interest in it and want to give it all away, I’m fine with that. This is for me 🌟
I've only watched the first of this video in which you have addressed questions from viewers concerning junk journals. You did a superb job. You did not glorify what a junk journal is. You spoke of creative expression but you did not mention art. I applaud that distinction. True art is not the making of something using art supplies. True art does not have to be a masterpiece. However, true art is not the act of making a product. Taking the time to make something is not creating art. Art is a product of talent, not the product of industry. Yes, a person can industriously work towards making a project. But, there is a difference between industry and talent. I've been making story books since 2019. Although I've been doing it for five years now, every time I sit down and start to work on a project, I learn something new. In my work flow, I may create a page and think I have completed it. After a day or so, if I revisit what I've made, I can almost always see ways in which I can improve and refine what I've done. The vast majority of UA-cam journalers I've seen work against the clock. In other words, they have allotted an hour for their video therefore what they make has to be completed (or almost completed) in that time frame. With that rule in place, so much lack of thought and attention is evident to the viewers. This is a negative thing for junk journalers. However, if one approaches these videos in a different mindset, you can see a value that is not at all connected to junk journaling. Reading comments given to popular journalers, one does not have to be a scientist to realize that for many of the viewers, the draw is not a concentration on the journaling process. Rather, the element of connection is the personality of the person making the video. I suspect there are a lot of lonely people who watch junk journaling videos because it is a way in which they can feel connected to the outside world. The person in front of the camera becomes a friend who is always there, always friendly, always reassuring. Let's face it, society throughout the world has become so disjointed, many people feel isolated. They long for connections, places where they feel they belong without judgment. Junk journaling videos provide a safe place where like-minded people can come together and feel welcome and appreciated. After five years of watching junk juornaling videos, the allure to watch these videos has diminished. Sadly, a great many videos made these days are just rehashing old ideas ad infinitum. The mechanics of junk journaling has replaced the creative expression. I don't see me giving up making story books, but I do fear that my days of watching junk journaling videos for inspiration are fast coming to an end. But, even at that, these videos do provide friendship and connections. These are just as valuable (if not more so) than the junk journaling aspect. I found this video to be thoughtful and well-informed, Magarete. You were objective and did not indulge in subjectivity. Thank you for your time, your effort and your caring attitude.
I am one of the lonely ones. But things are so expensive to add paint etc these days and I stopped mixed media and junk etc because of that. Goodness knows I wish I could nake an actual friend who woukd talk on the phone with me.
@@RepentfollowJesus Something I found to do that takes time but helps me get into the Word..getting closer to Jesus. Trying hard to remember that He is always there...Savior, Lord *and Friend. @@KJVwithMe thank you. I listen to a couple of preachers. Also, the audio bible. And have found a man who plays the harp and lyre too, I think, and sings the psalms. And I found another last night. It helped me sleep. They talk about when David played for Saul to help him.

I've always been interested in book making. I thought about taking a class but didn't know where I could go. Then as i was randomly going through UA-cam, I found videos about junk journals. I was hooked. I purchase digitals, I'm not that creative. There are so many people who are creative and sell digitals for a reasonable amount. i have enough to digitals to last me for years. LOL Most of the digitals have pages that are blank, or very little on them. I use these pages as you would a diary. I get the fun of putting a book together and have a journal with beautiful pages to write my thoughts in.
I loved this video. I make themed junk journals that are both a scrapbook and art journal that can also be used as a writing journal. I create them for myself and mostly others. This is a nice explation video. I shared it to my community. Thank you!
I essentially treat my sketchbooks as half junk journals lol, I love just sticking everything in them it's so much fun!! When I've drawn on a page and the ink has bled through to the other side I just glue things I've gathered on the other side, fun way to combine both hobbies
I agree! Combining the two hobbies is so versatile. I, too, like being able to cover over things on the other side if there are markings. It gives you the excuse to keep going 😉👍🏻💜
My 2nd video of yours and just loving them. You are an exceptional teacher with directional thinking. So encouraging!❤ I would love to see how you store your ephemera. Many thanks. Denmark 🇩🇰
Margarete - you have changed my life! Before watching this today I had never heard of the term "Junk Journal ". I like reste a journal for myself with calendars and dates and appointments and recipes and and journaling and sketches or notes of something I’m studying . As well as even shopping lists. This was the 90s Then about 10 yrs ago - I think - I fell into the wasi tape etc decorating as I’m retired and don’t need to keep track of everything in my phone. So that was fun for a while but kinda teenage- ish withe the stickers and stuff. NOW you have introduced me into Junk Journaling and we have a problem. When I was young my dad shared his love of some boxes with me- either the quality or image or size, they would always come back at Christmas with a pair of socks in them and then disappear again into a stash. So do I have boxes! I have beautiful boxes and handy boxes and oddly shaped boxes some how store in the little space Iive in. OMG I can do something with them! My mind is twirling! I now need to figure out the bones of the thing . I’m sure you’ll give me some tips and I can fall down another rabbit hole! Well - that’s what retirement is for…correct? THANK YOU! 8:53
I'm so excited for you, Maryanne! Yes, dig out your boxes and see if you can figure out how you can utilize some of them to create something new. What a fun adventure you are on now 😉💜👍🏻
Making it a diary or a memory keeping. That is what makes journal special. You can make it into something that suits your needs. Beautify it according to your liking.
Thank you for clearly up this issue for me, your new subbie!🎉 I enjoyed how easily you made that mini junk journal and I can’t wait to explore your other past vid and see what July brings! 🙏🏾🥰✨💜🤩👍🏾
Hello friend. I know it’s been a while. I have had a horribly painful year. I still cherish you and your videos, although I haven’t been around for a while. I hope you have a wonderful day. Thank you for what you do
Hello, my friend! I’m so sorry things have been rough recently. I still think about you and hope you have the time to take care of yourself among all the things happening around you. I’m wishing you the best 😘
Introspection is the best form of self-care. And journaling rewards you with something to touch - to love after you've unwound in the journey. Beautiful!
Junk journaling is an expression of one self. An expression of feeling and emotions. It is created out of love. A way to release ones thoughts in a creative way
I have always been a scrapbook maker, but it seems my kids like their junk journals even better! I did one journal to document my son’s years of training to become an airline pilot, and he was always excited to give me things that he had collected for me to put in it! Then I made a journal putting a story together of my daughter’s search for, purchase of, and move into her first house. I used some of her artwork from middle school, and parts of her planner from high school as pages. Great memories! I also used some of Cori Dahmen’s one-sheet wonders to make little booklets to give my kids and hand-wrote their favorite holiday recipes to tuck inside. Great gifts!
Your journals are all beautiful, and with your detailed explanations, I learned a lot about junk journals, I've been saving and recycling magazines, and photos that I didn't know how to start.
I’m excited that you are using postage stamps in your projects. I do the same thing. in addition to this wonderful video, people have embellished it with their comments about why and how they make and use junk journals. This community participation is one of the best things about UA-cam, and really gives the viewers an enhanced understanding of junk journaling. Thank you thank you for creating this space.
I have 2 junk journals. One will be handed down to my granddaughter. The other stays in our camper. The camper journal gets filled with feathers and leaves. Also short notes on our trip. And some photos may get thrown in there. The one for my granddaughter gets all kinds of things stuck in it. My schedule from my bus route. One of her dad's pays tubs from the railroad. Birthday invites. Store recipes, cute cards. Feathers I find. Notes from me. Sayings I see. So for now, that may sound boring. But 20 years from now, it will be interesting.
Awww. Thank you for the kind comments! I’m so glad this was helpful ❣️🙂👏🏼
I would never journal in a j journal much orefwescrapbooking! With personal items and photos!!!
I feel the same
My quick and simple answer is, "I enjoy doing it!" No one has to understand another person's hobbies. Each person must find their own bliss. This is mine.
Nicely said. 👍🏼❣️😉
I agree absolutely!
I appreciate you saying that. I needed that reminder.
Storms can be very traumatic! I'm so glad you're ok, and found a very creative outlet for processing through that trauma ❤
Thanks that's an amazing story. Glad you are safe 🙏
We lost our home in Florida due to hurricane Ian. Lost everything...EVERYTHING. But crafting in general has helped restore my inner peace. ❤
I think you nailed it right on the head as to why a junk journal. I have made several, my favourite is to my late husband where I have made a journal of all his work sheets; car licenses any piece of paper that has his writing on, photographs all kinds of bits that would otherwise be hidden away in a drawer or thrown away , is now safely in a book dedicated to his life with me, I love it
Wow! What a lovely journal dedicated to your husband and you. Thanks so much for sharing this idea. 💙
What a beautiful thing to do
I can imagine the memories it brought back while you made it.

Such fun!
This sounds absolutely lovely, Pam. What a wonderful keepsake 💜💙❤️
A blue book sounds perfect for my gdaughter and I to use as the structure to make our first journal. Thnx!
How thoughtful & loving❣️
Doesn't sound like a junk journal as it sounds thematic -personalized to your grand daughter's exciting career endeavour & quite purposeful!!
Thank you,@@MargareteMiller 💜
Sorry for your loss,@@wendywilson1736. 💜
Thank you for sharing your struggles. My deepest condolences on your loss. I’m so glad you discovered an outlet to help you through. 💜
Tearing paper and gluing is great therapy. And to make something you enjoy is a bonus. Sorry for your loss! May God bless you with peace.
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss, I think junk journalling is a healing process and opens your mind to beautiful things to think about. God Bless xx
@@humblethriftcrafter9870 God bless you.

May you feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation

Yes, and you can take a sampling of all those things to be represented in your junk journal. It could be a way to show what you’re interested in ❣️👍🏼😉
@cynthia8022
I've been reading many of the comments left under this video and yours screamed at ME.
Sure wish I could edit those dang typos though!!!! 🥸
I will be 73 next month and am in the process of doing your very same thing and I luv the way you described it!!!!! Thank you!!!
Love your comments. Thanks for sharing!! 💜
My husband has dubbed them “Keepsake Journals” because he says they are definitely not junk.
Free from perfection... YES, EXACTLY! The more I do this craft the less perfectionist I become. It is so healing!
I've been seeing junk journals around for a few years and I think they look amazing, but they've always been a mystery to me. I've never had the attention span to sort through videos trying to figure them out. Thank-you for putting all the info into one video and finally clearing it up for me!
Super! I’m so glad it was helpful ❣️👍🏼😉
I loved how you transformed a box (which usually would end in the trash) into a tiny peace of art.
So glad you enjoyed it, Blanca 👏🏼💙🌸
Margarete: it is so clear to me why one collages in a junk journal, glue book or any thing else. Any time I get a chance to explain to someone about what it is all about, I use the words calming, relaxing, can’t make any mistakes, creative, free and cheap to do. That usually catches their attention. Haha. Carol from California
Sounds like a great list of reasons to me! 👍🏻😉💙
Caroltonzi29
I would not think it was relaxing and calming to make one of these books if I wasn’t allowed to make a mistake, lol. Would be in big time, anxiety, lol.
I'm always surprised when folks ask why or don't "get it." I think like many other hobbies or creative interests, you either love it or don't quite understand it. Great video Margarete!💙
Thank you! It's a bit of thought to get the concept, but once the lightbulb comes on, the ideas never really stop 😉❣️👍🏻
I think i like making them more than actually using them. I have some many different styles. It’s therapy for me. creative freedom.😊
Exactly ❣️Me, too
Agree. It’s the making. I’ve rarely known anyone who uses them to journal unfortunately
For me the purpose of a junk journal is to make me happy! 😃
Sounds good to me! 😉❣️👍🏼
:o the signature stitch INSIDE AN ENVELOPE is incredible
I loved that!!!
So true!!! such a super idea!
If I could remember who showed me that I'd give them a shout out. I love how neat the envelope makes things 👍🏻😉💜
I add my heart when I make them for friends
I always loved paper crafts. When I saw junk journals, I dived in. While I love creating them, I find them a total escape when looking at them later. I’ve left a couple in Dr waiting rooms to help others take their mind off of the current situation.
What a kind idea❣️ I know what if I saw one in a doctors office I know I wouldn’t want to put it down😉
That is a great idea!!
How wonderful!!!
I haven't made one in almost a year mainly because the antique store I sold them in went out of business. I finished the journal I was working on then went straight in to a funk. Watching this video has inspired me to start up my junk journal making journey again! I can't thank you enough.
Yay!! 👏🏼 I’m so glad 💜
"why would anyone do that?"
that's not how art work folks, we just do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
art doesnt need to be functional or have a purpose. if you like how the idea sounds, try it and if you like you find your own reasons.
nice video, i just LOVED IT
Thanks so much! I don't mind explaining when people have a genuine interest to understand why others are interested in a certain thing. 😉
What sweet memories
and special family bond...
Thx for sharing
As they have to be functional, it is going to be my personal journal where each signature contains a topic i love, like autumn (photos, pictures from magazines, recipes for food to make in autumn),
Christmas (old christmas cards, recipes, traditions, wishlists, photos of our christmas trees through the years, aso),
education (copy of diplomas, class photos, friends from school, teachers that inspired me),
one signature about my son, and so on.
A book about me and my life.
So interesting! That's great that you know exactly what you want to do with yours. It makes things a bit easier when you have a focus and goal. 👍🏻
OMG that sounds like a huuuuuge project. Good luck!
Thank you. ❤
Wonderful!! I'm so glad it was helpful 💙
Thank you. I am going to try and make my own. Wish me luck. Does anyone have any ideas to make it look Victorian??? Thank you, k
I see your point and it’s valid. Everyone has to decide what is their limit. It’s smart of you to set yours 👍🏼😉❣️
Thnx!
Wonderful! So glad it was helpful ❣️👍🏼😉
Neat!! I love that you are using food boxes for covers. They are so versatile. I love the different sizes and spine widths. 😉💜👍🏻
Omg I love your junk journal examples. Better than going to a class to create a journal that looks like everyone else’s. Now this I can get behind of.
Awesome! So that means you'll be starting one this week? 😉❣️👏🏼
That sounds like the perfect gift.
What a thoughtful and creative gift, Brenda! I hope she loves it and will use it! 🙂👍🏻💜

My journals are a form of therapy. ❤. Thank you
Really loved this video. Regarding your next theme, FREE, I got to thinking of so many ideas: free gift, free time, freedom, free thinking, free falling. I think you’ll have a blast with this topic. I can’t wait to see what you do!
Thanks so much for these ideas! I appreciate it 😉👍🏼❣️
I started doing glue books during the Covid lockdowns. It really helped with the anxiety and isolation.

I agree. It's not for everyone. Thanks for sharing your ideas❣️
I call my junk journal "my joy journal"! Every time something or some experience brings me joy I write in it or attach mementos to the pages. Its so much fun to create them!
I totally agree! How wonderful that you use yours to record memories. Good for you! 👍🏼💜😉
For me, it's an art journal. I don't write in them. I just enjoy creating each page. For me each page is a work of art. They reveal or reflect what my feelings are at that moment.
Yep, they are art journals for me, too 👍🏼❣️🙂
I love this little junk journal. Part of junk journaling is also using materials you love so that when you look back at the pages, it makes you happy. Thank you.
Yes! Thank you! 😉❣️👍🏻
I was asked the very same thing today. I have made lots of them. I also made smaller ones at a class of kids who were going away to boarding school. My idea was they could have other kids leave their message as a keep sake to look back o. The girls were happy with their Little books.
What a wonderful idea. So thoughtful of you to put that into practice. A great keepsake 💙
Added thought: pages could be ZenTangle as art. I find this a superb method of relaxing. It blocks out all the noise in yr head, it allows the brain to focus, concentrating on what you're designing each stroke/line !!!
Great idea! 🎉
I like to think of my journal pages, as if they were artistic magazine layouts. Not too interactive or busy, just tasteful.😊
It’s good when you find your style and groove ❣️👍🏼😉
Thank you, again, Margarete, for sharing your time and talent with the rest of us ❤
What kind comments! Thanks so much❤️. Yes, it’s hard to resist a good box 😉
Good idea to provide suggestions 👍🏼😉❣️
It took me a long time to do a junk journal but once I did, I was hooked! I love creating different things to put in them. I must admit mine aren't so junky, lol. I suffer from chronic pain, and it helps take my mind off of it (as much as it can) for a while.
I'm the same!!!😊😊😊 It's so relaxing and positive, it takes your mind off your troubles. I'm hooked, too.😅
Yes, and they can turn into a big project but it's okay because you do it a little at a time. I do, anyway. I like that I can spread out the tasks and squeeze out so much joy from working on all those pages. 💜
Junk Journals are......Unlimited!!!!!❤🎉😮
lol 0:17 this question is always asked with all paper crafts, they can’t understand, but crafts has always been fun for me.
I’d like to know wer and who invented or started jj
I think the best of it is seeing all the old vintage stuff
7:57so funny how we look at boxes, and what we keep, Rocky (chocolate sticks) lots of kool box’s
Pocky chocolate sticks? I love those boxes! Great idea!! 😉❣️👏🏼
Thank you for this, I have people who still don't get it and I will send them to this video! Oh, yes... 'free' to me means using things I never paid for, found materials etc. Looking forward to seeing what you create!
Great “free” idea. Thanks so much!! 😘
I love making junk journals and then using them to explore different creative avenues. Stencils, stamps, inking, collage. At the end looking back at how I progressed is so exciting, very addictive!
Yes, they are great record keepers for all kinds of creative experiments, aren't they? 👍🏻😉💜
Eres una maga!!!! Me encantó tu proyecto, y adoro cómo explicas tus procesos creativos
Thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed it ❣️👍🏼🙂
Loved your junk journal show-n-tell...great answers & beautiful creations!! ❤️😉
Awww. thanks so much! 💙
Thank you! Recently I decided to make a junk journal to help me use up some of my scraps. Using a box as a cover seems so intuitive and easy and stapling too! So very helpful!😊❤
Wonderful! So glad it was helpful 👍🏼❣️😉
We do them to have fun and play with creativity and materials. To relax , yes. I look at them and they relax me just moving the pages. Furthermore I feel proud of the final result.
That’s exactly it. You’ve said it perfectly ❣️👍🏼😉

Yes, I understood your point in your first comment :)
I just wanted to add the view of those who don`t quite understand the idea of junk or art journaling.
Happy journaling❤
I love the little journal. You have great ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you so much! 💙
Beautiful work Margarete. Your comments on the process being as worthwhile as the result is true for me. Love your style with Junk Journals.
Thank you so much! 💜
I love using the junk journals that I make as glue books. I like to have a theme in each glue book. At the moment my theme is nature. Thank you so much for making this video. I love your videos 🇬🇧❤
I absolutely love this idea of a junk journal! ❤ i had never heard of it. Something like this is perfect for me to get lost in. Thank you so much! 🌼🌹💐
Wonderful!! I’m so glad you’ve now discovered them. Have fun exploring 👍🏼❣️😉
I really enjoyed your video. It’s a great explanation of junk journaling. I especially liked how you took us through some of your completed journals and took a step-by-step in making a small journal.
Thanks
You’re welcome!! Thanks for watching. I’m so glad it was useful ❣️👍🏼😉
Great summary. You've got it! So glad this was helpful 👍🏻❣️🌟
Thank you so much for your contemplative response. I enjoyed reading your thoughts and wise words. ❤️
I found a KJV playlist that I like, I listen to it and read along in my Bible but now have expanded and am listening while I exercise (walk in place, lol) etc. I really want to *know Scripture and *Him and this is helping : )
@@KJVwithMe thank you. I listen to a couple of preachers. Also, the audio bible. And have found a man who plays the harp and lyre too, I think, and sings the psalms. And I found another last night. It helped me sleep. They talk about when David played for Saul to help him.
@@RepentfollowJesus Several times I have seen a video come up that has a man playing the harp and singing Psalms. Just never have clicked on it. Guess, I need to do that. Thanks for the reminder : )
Fabulous tutorial on junk journals, especially since I’m a novice and have never made one.
So glad it was helpful! 💙
I love digitals, too. You’re right. They’re so inexpensive. You can explore to your heart’s content ❣️
I loved this video. I make themed junk journals that are both a scrapbook and art journal that can also be used as a writing journal. I create them for myself and mostly others. This is a nice explation video. I shared it to my community. Thank you!
Thanks so much for the share ❣️ Lucky you to be creating them with a fun supportive group 👍🏼💙🌟
So encouraging!❤
I would love to see how you store your ephemera. Many thanks. Denmark 🇩🇰
What kind comments. Thank you, Elizabeth 🌟💜👍🏼
Margarete - you have changed my life! Before watching this today I had never heard of the term "Junk Journal ". I like reste a journal for myself with calendars and dates and appointments and recipes and and journaling and sketches or notes of something I’m studying . As well as even shopping lists. This was the 90s
Then about 10 yrs ago - I think - I fell into the wasi tape etc decorating as I’m retired and don’t need to keep track of everything in my phone.
THANK YOU!

I'm so excited for you, Maryanne! Yes, dig out your boxes and see if you can figure out how you can utilize some of them to create something new. What a fun adventure you are on now 😉💜👍🏻
Great explanation. I’m going to have to come back and write it down. 🤔 on my journal
😁❣️👍🏻
Making it a diary or a memory keeping. That is what makes journal special. You can make it into something that suits your needs. Beautify it according to your liking.
Thank you for clearly up this issue for me, your new subbie!🎉 I enjoyed how easily you made that mini junk journal and I can’t wait to explore your other past vid and see what July brings! 🙏🏾🥰✨💜🤩👍🏾
Awesome! Thanks for stopping by. So glad you enjoyed this 💜
Hello friend.
I love the mailer box cover idea. Didn’t realize junk journals can be DIY journals from scraps!
Yep, they sure can 😉👍🏼💜
Introspection is the best form of self-care. And journaling rewards you with something to touch - to love after you've unwound in the journey. Beautiful!
Thank you for this video. I am feeling low emotionally and I need to hear this. I love this statement: You are giving things a second life...
Good! I'm so glad this was helpful ❣️👏🏼💙
Junk journaling is an expression of one self. An expression of feeling and emotions. It is created out of love. A way to release ones thoughts in a creative way
Love this 💜
I have always been a scrapbook maker, but it seems my kids like their junk journals even better!
My goodness! What creative ideas! You’ve created so many great journals. I hope your kids treasure them, or at least appreciate them. 🙂
Your journals are all beautiful, and with your detailed explanations, I learned a lot about junk journals, I've been saving and recycling magazines, and photos that I didn't know how to start.
Great! I’m glad you’ve got some ideas to play with 👍🏼❣️🌟
I’m excited that you are using postage stamps in your projects. I do the same thing. in addition to this wonderful video, people have embellished it with their comments about why and how they make and use junk journals. This community participation is one of the best things about UA-cam, and really gives the viewers an enhanced understanding of junk journaling. Thank you thank you for creating this space.
Thanks so much for your encouraging comments. So glad you stopped by 💜
I have 2 junk journals.
What an awesome idea, Nancy!! You’re right. What a treasure it will be for your granddaughter. I love that 🤩❣️👏🏼
