Strange thing, I am German and as long as I lived there nobody ever greeted anyone with kisses ! Then I moved to France where its kiss-kiss all the time and I hate it ...
Everytime i watch your videos i think that your accent is very nice to hear and it made others want to learn italian immediately. Thanks for sharing your videos are very helpful ! 😍
GIIIIIIRL YOU LOOK SO CUTE WITH YOUR HAIR UP. Also, this is so useful because I friggen NEVER know what to say when I'm at the grocery store or something, it's really embarrassing sometimes
I'm going to Rome in August to visit my girlfriend Alessia for a week I'm very excited because it's the first time we'll see each other in person she's been teaching me Italian but I'm also watching videos too to get extra help so I could learn more quicker thank you for being so helpful
Very helpful! Coming to Italy (all over but including Rome) on June 1st for 16 days and this channel makes me feel a little more confident about my travels. Thank you!
Thank you very much, that's one of my goals! I mean to prepare people to what they'll find here so that they can feel more confident! :D Where in Italy are you travelling?
Rome Inside It is 17 day trip so we are stopping many places. Lake Como, Venice, Verona, Florence, Assisi, Rome, and Sorrento. Rome is June 12th until the 16th. I’m traveling with a friend and neither of us have travelled intercontinentally before. This should be interesting. Mostly nervous about language barriers but I’m trying to get down some basic phrases beforehand. I just found out I have some Italian ancestry though I don’t know who or specifically from where so it makes this trip more special.
Don't worry about the language barries, those are all pretty touristic places :D I'll try to upload a basic italian sentences video part 2 in time for your trip!
Thanks for the video. Very useful and helpful. My only comment is I've been to Italy four times now over the last seven years. And I stay for 3weeks each time. I always enjoy wherever I go. But the problem I find is my Italian not very good even though I really do try ...and when I try ..locals always make a big deal that I'm pronouncing something wrong. Even my ciao I get told its wrong. So...now I've just stopped because I get so embarrassed. Now I just apologize upfront and speak minor English now when I'm out. But the funny thing is when someone there speaks English...I am Canadian by the way....it's far from perfect pronunciation but I can can fully obviously understand them even with their accent, but I never say that they have pronounced a word differently or a bit incorrectly because there is an local accent in top of it so it's bound to sound different. It's not just Italy..most non English language places are like this. All I'm saying is that if someone is trying....cut them some slack for not pronouncing something in the perfect way that you do having been born and raised into the language.
Great video! the information you gave will be very helpful when travelling through Italy. keep sharing more informational videos like this. for now Ciao from USA
It took a long time to get Portugese women to let me do the double kiss while Spanish women are almost insulted if you don't do it on the second meeting. Cultural differences are so interesting to observe. Coming to Italy in a few weeks!
we are leaving for Milan in 2 days. stiamo visitando un'amica per il suo matrimonio. and have watched most of your videos! . they have been so helpful and entertaining. Grazie mille!
if you close your eyes or perhaps, scroll down and just listen to her voice, she sounds like monica bellucci , here and there, beautiful sound and accent.
Hi! I am Italian but from the North east. I think there may be some incorrect parts and I would like to discuss them with other Italian people but in English, so other people can understand the situation. 1) When do you say "buongiorno"? I say "buongiorno" until there is light outside. When the sun sets, I say "buona sera". I heard "buon pomeriggio" only in some tv shows, I don't use it, and of course"buona notte" implies the idea of sleeping. 2) Is "salve" formal? Professor Bombi (she teaches linguics in my university) says that it is not formal, nevertheless I heard many young people use it as if it was formal. Maybe Italian is changing? 3) How do kisses work? I use 3 kind of kisses: the "romantic kiss" the "chaste kiss" and the "social kiss". The first is the one I have for my lover, the second for my sister, for my mother, for my best friend etc. and the last one is complicated. Men shake hands and are cool with it, women are expected to kiss even at the first meeting. I don't feel very comfortable and I usually give a manly, strong handshake while smiling like an angel. Is it the same for you? Thanks
Hey Carmen! Thank you so much for this comment! Here are my thoughts to your questions: 1) I say "buongiorno" till after lunchtime, i.e. if I enter a small shop at 11, I will say "buongiorno" to the owner/shop assistant. I find myself often saying "salve" though, cause I feel like is less work for my brain haha 2) I think I read a book from professor Bombi in university. I respect her thought but if you look at the way salve is used you can say it's pretty formal. For example, I would use it with my boyfriend's relatives in a form of respect, but I would NEVER use it with my friends (they would all laugh if I did 😂). But languages definitely go under a continous evolution and changing process so maybe Bombi intends that "salve" used not to be professional... Now I'm curious to know how my grandma/great-grandma used it! 3) That's interesting! Maybe it's different in that part of Italy but here women are not expected to kiss on the first meeting :) And that's good cause I personally wouldn't feel comfortable in doing so and I'd probably do what you do haha
@@RomeInside I've been going to Italy for the last 55+ years and the use of formal versus informal has changed rather dramatically. I'm not suggesting that the formal way of speaking has disappeared, but it's definitely used less frequently.
I've had confusion for years when to kiss people. As an American I have never gotten fully used to it. Sometimes I find it a bit superficial but that's the custom here.
Super.
You have a wonderful channel. My Grandparents came from Italy, but I’m an American and I only grew up with faint traces of proper etiquette as they assimilated into American culture. Thanks for the help.
this kissing friends thing is a brazilian thing too lol, in Rio they give two kisses (just like italy), in São Paulo it's just one kiss, in the south of brazil it's three kisses lmao
In Italy is quite simple making friends Like just sitting in a cafe and talk with the cashier and having a nice talk is something that will make you a friend of him Like in my town I know the barber, some olds all day playing cards, a lot of teachers of the school which I used to go A lot of my personal friend Yes is quite easy If you want some easy lessons for Italian there are some courses online That may help Bye! -Federico Serri from Modena

The same in Egypt except that only girls kiss girls and boys kiss boys , the opposite sex just do the handshake ,but the same in everything specialy the thing with the adults

Since you live there in Bellissimo Italy ? You have already heard of him ? But i have a question or favor to ask ? Who would you suggest i listen to. You see first im a moble dj here in New Mexico and yes Im Italian, American. As i mentioned in a previous comment to you ? I have discovered the High Five quintet who ? I believe are in Bari Italy the drummer of the quintet? Lorenzo Tucci is kind of the leader ? Of the group. I also discovered Mario Biondi and a song i like very much by him titled? This is what you are. But i would love hear of some other great musicians that you also could suggest. I may even add them to my play list on my various dj events. Anyway ?, Grazie and i hope to hear from you soon with some great suggestions. Buona notte. Ciao. 😉
Is the initiative to kissing based only on age or is it also based on rank academic/ nobility and gender ? And how does all that Work in introductions in Italy ?

In Germany you start with the right cheek (girls only). When I moved to Rome I almost broke my nose on at least 10 occasions
Hahahaha some people start with the right cheek here sometimes too, so you could witness some embarassing moments even between italians!

thank u so much, very useful
My left or their left??
The left cheek doesn’t make sense to me since you shake hands with your right. The left cheeks seems like an awkward position
Whose left cheek? Mine or him/her?

So boys kiss on the cheeks every time they meet or leave?
I don't WANT to shake hands with People when meeting then for the first time!!!!NO!!And I feel that I must be very firm with My NO!!!

Yeah, just pick one and go with it. ;)
