    In South Africa you should never say "fork and knife" because it ends up sounding like "f***ing knife". We always say "knife and fork" instead. Thanks for your local perspective of Italy and your tips! They're awesome :)

    May I say, on behalf of my country the US, I apologize for some many of the commenters down below. I really respect and enjoy your content as I am planning on going to Italy in about a year (marrying a full Sicilian New Yorker lol). We are not all close minded and many of us love to know more about how to respectfully enjoy another country and or culture. It almost brought me to tears to read the hateful and absurd and unnecessary comments. Anywhoo, love the tips. Keep them coming please! xo

      Thank you very much for your words Darcy! :)
      Some people are not interested in other countries cultural rules and at the end it's fine as long as no one breaks the law.
      I still don't get why they get so upset if some people care though haha
      Sicily is stunning! You'll love it :)

    I was kinda baffled when u said that in Italy you don't eat bread with olive oil at the restaurants! In Greece we always serve the bread with olive oil or butter and a lot of times the bread is served grilled, soaked in olive oil and spices and sometimes tomatoes on top! Anyway, lovely and informative video!

      Yes! It's also the same thing in Spain and in Egypt. As well as a bottle of Balsamic vinegar. I would've sworn this would be a Mediterranean thing. How Italy doesn't do this is surprising. Maybe it's something only the Italians in Rome do not do?

      I've been to Calabria region in Italy 10 years ago and there was olive oil and vinegar on the table every meal in the pizzeria. Dunno. And what's wrong with wearing bright top and sandals that scream "tourist"? I am one, am I not? :D

      I think it's to aid cleaning the palette to be honest. It's like authentic italian recipes, there's a standard and it's there for a reason --- doesn't mean people can't go off "script" so to speak, but they don't come up with very specific ingredients or methods for no logical reason at all.

    I've spent a lot of time in Italia, 3 years on and off, specifically in and around Umbria/Tuscany and Perugia. I Had Pizza pre cut and shared between people many times, Had bread with oil at a restaurant, I have an Italian father but I speak English, Hand gestures have always been a part of my family comunication and I've never offended anyone using hand gestures in Italia, When entering shops I always greet in Italian and Ciao! when I leave, That's just basic manners and i always try to speak and learn from people around me. I drink wine whenever i want lol, I wear all my own clothes and what I'm comfortable wearing, Normally shorts and t shirt or vest and trainers. What I wear should not offend anyone, I Never entered a fountain, that would be quite unhygenic and embarrasing, respect the fountains people. Just my personal experience. The answer to really not offending anyone is the same all over the world, Be Tollerent, Be yourself, Be respectfull and embrace the culture. Ciao!

    When I first traveled to Italy I had the pleasure of visiting Torino, Genoa and Savona and I never saw any Italians talking loudly or using exaggerated hand gestures. Actually it was quite the opposite; most Italians I encountered were very reserved, quiet and calm. I asked my Italian friend about this and she said the loud talking and wild hand movements are a stereotype and most Italians aren't like that. Another funny story is that during my time in Italy I fell in love with "espresso" but I found out that Italians don't say "espresso" when ordering it they say "cafe". So I started saying "cafe" at the coffee shop but the server would recognize I'm a tourist and would confirm with me by saying "espresso?" or show me the small cup and make sure it's what I want. And the same with sparkling water; I fell in love with "acqua frizzante" but when I would buy a bottle in the shops, the cashier would recognize I'm a tourist and would say something like, "You know this one has gas?". And I would say, "Yes, I prefer it!".

    • @silviaconsonni586
      @silviaconsonni586 21 день тому

      Exactly. The big hand gesture thing depends on the context. You don't see ordinary people in relaxed situations throwing hands at each other. Maybe, in traffic, you see hands going "YOUR CAR LIGHTS, SUMMER CHILD!!!".

    Great video, thanks, everything you said is very true. I always say Salve, Palare Inglaise ? And most people are fine and helpful, and I will actually go on to say I found the Italian people amazingly nice natured and just want to help you, be fair, and try to get what you would like. The Italian people have feelings too, so consider them too by learning some words or language, and I had great fun, they think its cool and sweet.

      If there's something that WILL make you look strange is to have lunch or dinner drinking cappuccino. That's considered gross here. Cappuccino is for breakfast only, and, in ALL cases, never to be used while you're having salty food.

    Hey great vid!
    Haha when it comes to pizza, I've found some place do slice a pizza for you (and it seems almost more common if they think you're a foreigner) but most places don't..
    Where I live, there's a Naples style pizzeria.. on their website when you want to order delivery, they have a section for special requests and at the top of the list is "sliced" haha... however when sitting there I've never seen anybody order a sliced pizza. I recently went for a pizza with an American and he was shocked that the pizzas were individual sized.. from his perspective (and other Americans I've spoken with), it was too small to share but too big to be a "personal" size
    I've been in situations where I've had two people speaking next to me speaking to each other about me "maybe he speaks english" "should we ask him if he knows where XYZ is" or I've even heard some foreigners in different countries (not just Italy) saying horrible things about the locals assuming nobody understands... it really is horrible...
    Haha wine with pizza may not be the most appropriate meaning, but haha what's worse is when you see people order Pasta alla Carbonara with an espresso, oh goodness... I've seen this too many times
    looking forward to the next vid :)

    • @RomeInside
      @RomeInside  6 років тому +1

      I had no idea! Only for the delivery pizza I hope... But it doesn't make sense to me because the pizza cools down faster if you slice it!
      Haha it's not that big come on! Plus the roman pizza is thinner, so it's way easier to eat an entire one on your own :D
      Yeah it happened to me too! That's why I thought it was a good idea to include it haha
      I swear if I worked in a restaurant I would kindly suggest my clients to not have pasta and espresso together... How can someone even think about mixing the two!
      Thanks for the detailed comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! :D

We are REALLY concerned with the concept of “bella figura” and we’re judging a lot of people on that.
    But yes: no flip flops, do not bathe in the water fountains and most importantly: do not wear sweatpants everywhere you go. We don’t need to know how lazy you are. We all work our ass off and yes, we’re all tired, but dress appropriately and make an effort. Nobody likes a slouch.
