6:32, Nor sure what you are doing here, the outer of the bearings should be glued in not greased ( Loctite 641), by all means grease the bearings up. You don't want that bearing spinning in the body. The "spacers" are called shim washers and are incredibly important. They determine the position of the helical gear and if you don't get it right the whole rack will jam up. Good luck with the rest of the build, Mal.

The bit that sticks out of the bottom of the digital vernier gauge is a depth gauge so no need for the tape gauge.

Be very careful using the multi grips on the rack shaft splines. Use the coupler or wrap the splines in old leather and then multigrip. You destroy those and it’s a bad day at assembly time and or not to mention a major safety risk.

As others have said, you’ve gotta pack the bearings with grease before fitting them. And as for putting grease / oil on the outer for ease of fitting, forget it. They are such a close fit into the housings that it just gets wiped off as it enters.

@8:20. The shims would be for bearing pre load. They add \ remove tension on both bearings. Ferrari would no doubt do a load test much like when diff pre loads are checked.

That reminds me of my first Ferrari, a Mondial 8, the pinion gear stripped when I was driving it and entering a roundabout it needed about 25 turns to get round! I managed to get home and I bought a new rack, which was chromium plated, and after drilling out all the rivets holding the fibreglass lining into the luggage area at the front, set about replacing it. A right challenge as it would only go in from one side and then needing twisting and turning to avoid the frame etc. just like something off the TV show The Krypton Factor. Love watching what you do, I rebuilt several damaged Ferraris before HPI started keeping records of so called "write offs". Imagine the problems of finding parts before the Internet. Luckily, nearby is the only authorised Ferrari service centre that is not a dealership, run by Bob Houghton, who was so extremely helpful and friendly and went above and beyond to locate things for me and photocopying pages from workshop manuals etc.

Iim sure you're aware of this, but car manufacturers don't make components like racks, shocks, bearings'and seal etc and can be bought from the original manufacturers for considerable less when not supplied in a Ferrari box. For example, I bought front discs for one of my wife's cars for around £30. These also fitted a Lamborgini Gallardo, but I doubt they would have the price I paid. Great channel, by the way. It's going to look great when it's all sorted.

I am surprised that you don't have a local industrial hardware store that stocks those dowel pins. You will need stainless ones and the length is not that critical, because you can get a half dozen or so that are significantly longer than you need and just cut off the correct length with a Dremel cutoff wheel. You can trial and error it.

  • @leeford6575

To measure the hole why not use the opposite end of your capliers.... the thin end that comes out when you move the caplier back and forth can be put in the bottom of the hole and the end of the caplier on the top of the bearing then the caliper will measure it.
