honestly it's not that impressive when i've seen artists like Will Wood constantly applying stuff like this to their lyrics 'you draw a line in the sand where it ends and you begin' or 'but lately you've been focusing too much on yourself, so how many miligrams of you, are still left in there?'. More indie artists have different approaches. Doesn't mean Chromakopia isn't extremely ingenius though. It's great. I just thought it wasn't much to fawn about certain things.

This is such a good video. I'm preparing a video about how Chromakopia and Brat (and some other albums this year) are all about the anxiety of entering your 30s. I think that's a big reason for this retrospection of what Tyler's choice to living for himself has given and cost him, and wondering how he should move forward.
I’m wondering, and I would love to know more about this and if it’s just the music I’m viewing or if it truly is Pop music, about the implications of Pop music “aging” it feels like for at least 20 years prior to this pop music has always been about being young, like from Brittany to TSwift. Is it because the industry is so profit driven that these artists are holding onto their place in the market so hard but can’t make music about being 16 at 30? Is it because of consumerism flooding creative spaces and those with the artistry to stand out instead of working for someone else are just that age? I’m so curious about that I’ve definitely been thinking about it. It’s just, I’m 20, and when I was 10 pop music was about being 20, and now that I’m here it’s moved on, or is that just personal bias?
@@samanthafarace2233 Yeah, I've been trying to figure this out. On one hand, years ago in the 70's and 80's older artists like Phill Collins were more common. Back then if your music was good you could just look like an average 30 year old and people would accept it. As image became more and more important younger artists started being pushed more. But now we're seeing more older artists occupy the top charts. I think part of it is what you said, established artists are holding onto their spots. But also, I think it's tougher to be an up and coming artist right now, so it takes longer to have your breakout moment. It's become more common now to see artists like Teddy Swims and Jelly Roll who have been actively making music for years get their first chart placements in their early to late 30s, maybe in a different era they would have had a hit earlier.

I'm not even a Tyler fan, but I listened to the entirety of Chromakopia. The track about his mom aging and wanting a grandbaby had hit hard, because my own grandmom looked me in the eyes and expressed with a gentle, yet profound sadness that she'll never get a great-grandchild from me. I don't want kids. Don't even want to date and get married. Tried it, and the effort isn't worth the end result. I see other people coupled up with kids and it does leave a pang of sadness, but I know the cost. I'm an artist, and my mom had four kids and had to give up her own art career to raise four kids. Growing up and seeing her old art and what could've been if she didn't choose to have children sticks with me. Tyler's tracks spanning his struggle between "impressing the dead," satisfying his mom's wishes, romantic relationships, and retaining his independence and creativity while grappling with--not just his--but other folks mortalities speaks to me. It's a lot to consider, and I'm 30. I don't have much time left to even do THAT anymore. But Tyler lets me know that I'm not alone.

I think the best approach to art for yourself recently has been Porter Robinson. The most recent album being the farthest departure from what got him seen like "Divinity", "Sad Machine", and "Language". Smile :D ventured so far into the territory of his fears as an artist and how just like his fans who made his music their entire personality as a coping mechanism or not and points out that in a way on the other side he is the same and can't live without them. Songs about the struggle of success and how it smothers out you life existed in nurture already however the approach in "Picture Perfect Garden" feels more like he's having to chase normalcy with the line "somebody's gotta say the things I'm trying not to say." either referencing the inability to speak your mind or more likely in my opinion "please someone tell me to quit and live a normal life with my wife. This album however seams to take the opposite and less holistic approach while trying to seem like "I've got it figured out" while creating instead a sense of dissonance without direction or hint of a push and pull. What I'm trying to say is he's lost in the sauce and doesn't know it.
I feel like i really needed this video. I´m always struggling between having a proper career graduating from colege while at the same time trying my best to develop means of self expression, mainly making songs or playing the guitar. Great video! 7:26 true, and name Chromakopia and St. Chroma are from the book "The Phantom Tollbooth", which has a character named Chroma the Great, who is the "conductorof color", orchestrating the color brought to the world with each sunrise and sunset. Thats where the color shifts like in 7:19 reference too
After reveling in the light of Chromakopia on it's release, I watch this video and experience the deepness to the album again. Thank you for making this video!
This is one of the best videos I've seen covering this topic. I am grateful that this video brought me to your channel, I look forward to going through your videos! :)
Thanks for your insights, I find myself resonating to this. There’s irony in him centering his craft around capturing his own experiences, which has its selfish aspects, yet in the end that’s what connects us to him, and him to us. There’ll always be someone who connects with or relates to our art. So when we create for ourselves, we’re inevitably creating for others, too.
There's so much to be said for building your brand and showcasing your artistry as an icon, removed from your personal self but also entrenched in it's various qualities and emotions. Just as Tyler did for years with his characters, showing elements of his lived experience while maintaining the aura and mystery of a star. But eventually, the ego of being a superstar consumes the creator and many great artists either fall of the cliff or make an album which reminds them of their humanity and brings them back to reality. I feel like Kendrick/Tyler had to remind everyone (and themselves) that they're only human to be able to come back to the icon status which Kendrick has now done with GNX. Super interested to see where Tyler goes from here. Great video! Gave me a lot to think about in my own artistry and my path forward🙂
This is the only video ever that would make me actually want to listen to Tyler the Creator. It's well put, and your word choice is charming. Thank you.
I love when you can find pieces of the artist (and their passions and beliefs) in the art. An example that comes to mind for me is Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films, they almost always have references to aircraft which is one of his biggest interests, as well as anti-war messages.
Music and art in general are very different to content creation. Content creators are entertainers. Your job is to make your audience happy so you earn money from it and that's it. People's opinions do matter for a content creator. Art is by definition, selfish. Artisitic vision is usually self reflective, I'd dare to say it is most of the times. A true artist has the skill of looking inside himself and turn that into a song, a painting, you get the picture. If people identifies with what the artist created, they consume it, if not they should just move on. No artist owns people or fans anything, public is there to observe, not participate. Art is not a service, or a product, artists aren't workers. You can't call customer service if you don't like it and ask for it to be changed.
I hope that somehow we can all start coming together as creators to amplify each other's visions ... imagine if everyone started collabing with their talents and skills on projects together. Then we could all have access to high quality content!
Great video, although I do kinda disagree with one point. I do think St.Chroma is kinda a character. A character in a loose sense that Tyler is playing as sometimes but he removes the persona at moments.
I really mess with this video. It’s awesome that we get to live in a time where some of the biggest celebrities like Kendrick and Tyler are making an active conversation through their art about what it means to be in the spotlight and have such a big influence on so many people. From a content perspective these messages are so important for people to see that the people that they revere and hold to such a high standard are just as emotionally complex and morally ambiguous as the rest of us. But regardless of all of that, it is doubly important that this music that Tyler and a few others are making is so compelling artistically. It goes against the typical formula for generic and uninteresting music that makes up most of the top charts. The fact that music - which from a production and instrumentation sound point is so unique - is making its way to the charts is kind of a wake up call to the greater industry saying:“Hey. People like music that sounds interesting and new.” I hope that the fact this album was/is so commercially successful will lead to artists making more music that is unique and personal. All that being said, I think Chromakopia is such an amazing album and I already got tickets for the tour as a birthday gift, and hopefully this video does well enough for you to be able to go too. Much love.
@chimdot that's the thing, I don't revere or care about these celebrities like that, so this self indulgent ass shit from them like chromakopia or Mr. Morale and the big steppers is just pretentious bullshit to me. Those albums sounded like utter trash to me. I don't give a fuck what these people have got going on in their lives or emotionally, I just need the *music* to sound good thars what comes before anything to me. Like, that's what MUSIC should be. Something that sounds good and pleasant to hear. If you want some kind of window into someone's inner thoughts and feelings read some fucking poetry.
I don't revere or care about these celebrities like that so when they make albums like chromakopia or Mr. Morale, it's just pretentious ass bullshit to me idgaf about what they got going on in their personal lives or wanna hear them cry about their feelings or . .how hard it is to be rich and famous. I don't even care about lyrics. To me, the actual music comes first, I need the *music* itself to sound good. That's the whole point of MUSIC after all, to make something that sounds good and pleasant to the ear. If you want some kind of deep window into someone's thoughts and feelings read some fucking poetry. I'm just trying to hear something I can nod my head to while I'm at a party or in my car sitting in traffic I don't need any commentary on fame or any bullshit like that just give me something that sounds cool when I'm doing drugs.
Amazing read of not only this album but the zeitgeist in arts and public figures. I have mixed feelings about this reading. I really appreciate the authenticity of those figures (like Tyler and Kendrick) going for a deep introspection and sharing that they have struggles as any other, that they don't have the answers and that they have to solve their own problems as well. It fits perfectly with the times of over-sharing and it demolish the thoughts about successful people living a perfect life. But at the same time, I feel like lots of people who look at them as a guidance, can feel abandoned, not having a clear moral compass on what to do or what to think. And the right answer is just: There is not a clear answer about your problems, you should do as we do, check your life, think deeply and came out with your own ideas. But, I feel, many people need strong figures to look upon and follow their words. If the ones that have it right are sharing their struggles, the people will follow the advice of the people that are not so honest about what you should do with your life. Not sure if any of this make sense at all (and sorry about my english), but I'd like to think that artists like Tyler can have a deep impact on how people reflect on their lives and it's not just a "Selfish Art" for their own sake.
I am so glad I was able to find this video. Fantastic points and ideas in this video. People who underappreciated Chromakopia should watch this!!! Amazing work.

The one miss of this video is interpreting "Darling, I" as purely a song about infidelity. That's definitely a big part of the song (especially the "..till I get infatuated with a new b*tch" line). However, there's also an honest exploration of ethical nonmonogamy and examination of the flaws of traditional relationships ("I get different things from different people/I want you to explore too/I don't own you"). I found that aspect of the song to be super cool, complex, and introspective. It's a perspective I haven't heard explored in a lot of music and I think he pulled it off really well.
I'm not sure if Darling, I is about Tyler's infidelity so much as its about him finding monogamy to be against what he wanted. Although on Take Your Mask Off there is the line "How dare you try to ruin her marriage?" which might give credence to that angle. Why do you say Darling, I is about infidelity? it seems like an interesting take Thank you for this video. A lot of this, particularly the section on the LACK of a character in Chromakopia really helped the album solidify for me a bit. Also love that you're connecting this to Mr Morale since Tyler has been outspoken about it as an important level of honesty that should be seen more :). Gonna share this with some friends now!

When the videos so good you don't feel sleepy anymore and now you can watch the rest of your watch later playlist
This was such a good watch, well put together man
tyler the creator is just clearly awesome sauce
I feel like i really needed this video. I´m always struggling between having a proper career graduating from colege while at the same time trying my best to develop means of self expression, mainly making songs or playing the guitar. I want to make myself feel free by my own means, but most of the time i don´t even know what i want to be freed from
DUDEEEE this is so underrated!! I hope the algorithm picks this up, cause this is gold!
Bro, you did a really great job on this! Super video, keep going ❤
Great video! 7:26 true, and name Chromakopia and St. Chroma are from the book "The Phantom Tollbooth", which has a character named Chroma the Great, who is the "conductorof color", orchestrating the color brought to the world with each sunrise and sunset. Thats where the color shifts like in 7:19 reference too
this is hands down the best analysis of chromakopia ive watched.
I understand CHROMAKOPIA on a deeper level now. Thanks
Criminally, criminally, C R I M I N A L L Y under-viewed video. This was beautiful
After reveling in the light of Chromakopia on it's release, I watch this video and experience the deepness to the album again. Thank you for making this video!
2:06 this guy HATES judge judy.
One of my least favorite songs on the album tbh
@@BeastBoy557 i really like it
This is one of the best videos I've seen covering this topic. I am grateful that this video brought me to your channel, I look forward to going through your videos! :)
It's kinda wild that Tyler the creator is still getting acknowledged this far into his career
he’ll be here for quite a bit, like him gained him a LOTTT of new glazers
Thanks for your insights, I find myself resonating to this. There’s irony in him centering his craft around capturing his own experiences, which has its selfish aspects, yet in the end that’s what connects us to him, and him to us. There’ll always be someone who connects with or relates to our art. So when we create for ourselves, we’re inevitably creating for others, too.
this is one of the best videos I have seen this year
This was an incredible video thank you so much for the time you put into it!
I've never watched a video so beautiful
I love his album and learning about Tyler is so interesting because it shows so well that people are just people weather they're celebrities or not
this is awesome man! good stuff
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING, good job on making a goated video!!!
Extremely underrated video, this has gotta blow up soon
“kopia” in polish means copy, not struggle
idk where did you get that from xd
it’s just a small nitpick, you did a great job overall

You earned yourself a new subscriber and a new youtube rival, this video was top tier
Loved this whole.experience
how do you only have 8.5k subs, that number finna go up so fast
This is the only video ever that would make me actually want to listen to Tyler the Creator. It's well put, and your word choice is charming.
Thank you.
Amazing video. You've just earned a subscriber!
I love when you can find pieces of the artist (and their passions and beliefs) in the art. An example that comes to mind for me is Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films, they almost always have references to aircraft which is one of his biggest interests, as well as anti-war messages.
This was a really good video; great pacing.
What a great analysis of nuance in all things. This came at the perfect time for me. Well done on the video, needs more eyes!
Halation my beloved 😍. I love the self-shot insert footage rather than stock footage, amazing video 💯
Subscribed. Your editing, writing and analysis is absolutely outstanding. Thank you for this video.
A character in a loose sense that Tyler is playing as sometimes but he removes the persona at moments.
im pretty sure hes based on chroma the great from the phantom tollboth by norton juster
Spectacular video. Keep it up man!
beautifully made
this is a fucking banger
so well edited
so beautifully crafted
and filled with so much knowledge
good job
I'm just trying to hear something I can nod my head to while I'm at a party or in my car sitting in traffic I don't need any commentary on fame or any bullshit like that just give me something that sounds cool when I'm doing drugs.
i love the tomorrow soundtrack in the background
2nd tyler the creator video essay in one day (i cant survive another)
this boutta blow up. phenomenal video btw
Amazing editing, very well paced
such good deep dive analysis of his work nice editing too
I am so glad I was able to find this video. Fantastic points and ideas in this video. People who underappreciated Chromakopia should watch this!!! Amazing work.

"My drugs attention, I am an addict, but I get paid to indulge my habits."
a solid video worth all 8 minutes & 48 seconds
The one miss of this video is interpreting "Darling, I" as purely a song about infidelity. That's definitely a big part of the song (especially the "..till I get infatuated with a new b*tch" line). However, there's also an honest exploration of ethical nonmonogamy and examination of the flaws of traditional relationships ("I get different things from different people/I want you to explore too/I don't own you"). I found that aspect of the song to be super cool, complex, and introspective. It's a perspective I haven't heard explored in a lot of music and I think he pulled it off really well.
to be clear, besides that, this video had zero misses. exceptional work
Calling it now at 9.01k subs, this channel will blow up
"I hope you find your self"
I'm not sure if Darling, I is about Tyler's infidelity so much as its about him finding monogamy to be against what he wanted. Although on Take Your Mask Off there is the line "How dare you try to ruin her marriage?" which might give credence to that angle. Why do you say Darling, I is about infidelity? it seems like an interesting take
Thank you for this video. A lot of this, particularly the section on the LACK of a character in Chromakopia really helped the album solidify for me a bit. Also love that you're connecting this to Mr Morale since Tyler has been outspoken about it as an important level of honesty that should be seen more :). Gonna share this with some friends now!
@@someoneontheinternet4518 honestly it might be a genuine misunderstanding and the fact in my culture (US) (Dont know if it’s this creators as well) to some people polyamory and infidelity are closely aligned. Which is not the case if it’s communicated which honestly Tyler is clearly communicating in said song. While I think it’s possible for a polyamorous person discovering that they are while cheating could be a real thing. I don’t think that’s what Darling I is really about.

Wonderfully said. I appreciate the nuance in your takes and the efficiency of your words. also editing funne (:
