Jo: When we think about pianists . . . you seem to have long fingers.

Jo: You do have long fingers.
[Now Cho and Yu put their palms against each other]
Yu: My palm is a bit bigger, but your fingers are much longer.
Jo: How many keys can you stretch your fingers across?
Cho: I can reach an 11th note and manage a 12th.
Yu: You really do have long fingers.
Jo: Wow. . . Longer fingers may be an advantage in playing the piano, correct?
Cho: I don't know because I've never had them short.
[Laughs]
Yu: Hahaha. Honestly, as it is, your fingers are very long, your joints.
Just by looking at you, you are no different froum other young people of your age, but you are called "Cho-pin". You are literally an unparalleled pianist, Seong-Jin Cho. What an extraordinary person you are.
I'm curious about your first encounter with the instrument. When did you start playing the piano?
Cho: I started playing when I was 6 years old. My mother took up playing the piano as a hobby, and we had an upright piano at home. So naturally, I would play around with the piano and sing a song while playing it.
Yu: Do you have a musician in your family or in the music industry?
Cho: I am the first musician.
Yu: Then, neither of your parents were musicians?
Cho: My father worked for an engineering company. My parents like classical music but do not know much about it.
Jo: Still, when you first sit on the piano, you know there is this harmony between you and the outside world, did you feel that you and the piano become one? Have you ever had that feeling?
Cho: When I was young, I tried various things. I tried swimming and learned Taekwondo. I convinced my parents to take me to violin lessons. I think I only had fun with the piano. I felt I was better at the piano.
Yu: So you felt the piano suited you for some reason.
Jo: [Cho's parents took 6 year old Cho to a group piano lesson at a music academy for several months]. It's just tlhat when we were little, we had this 'grapes' chart to fill the colors in (to mark your attendance at school). Did you get some days off from the academy? You know, you skip classes sometimes. Have you ever ditched classes from the academy?
Cho: I was 6 years old when I went to the academy. It's hard to ditch school when you're 6 years old, LOL.
[Laughs]
Yu: Actually, this has gone beyond recovery. I apologize on behalf of Jo, LOL.
Cho: [in disappointed tone] You know my mother liked you.
[Laughs]
Yu: Generally, Bayer is picked for beginners when learning the piano. Bayer for Children Book I and II, and if you've made your way up to Czerny 100, you are there.
Jo: Czerny 30, 40, 50 . . .
Yu: Then Cherny 100.
Cho: I think I did up to Cherny 30.
Yu: Up to Czerny 30 . . . Good information for those interested in piano and want to learn it. Mr. Seong-Jin Cho just said he only went up to Cherny 30.
[Laughs]
I guess you obviously couldn't hide your talent. You were accepted to Seoul Arts Center for the Gifted and the Talented in third grade.
You deepened your understanding of the piano while studying under Professor Park Sook-ryeon and Professor Soo-Jung Shin.

You also did well academically.
Cho: Doesn’t everyone get good grades in elementary school!?
Yu: That's not true at all. What are you talking about?
[chuckles and asks] Why are you looking at him (Jo) by the way? 3:49 [as Cho turns to look at Jo for approval. The pretense here is if Jo was good in school, then everyone was].
[Laughs]
Cho: [smiles] I apologize.
Yu: No need to. Haha.
Jo: You do have your own unique sense of humor.
Yu: Yes, he does.
Yu: In your performance video, there is this comment where the person says he was a very close friend to you. He said you did so well almost every time you took a big exam, you would get 100, 100, 100, 95 in Korean language, English, Mathematics, Science, etc. You were really into the game MapleStory. Did you like MapleStory?
Cho: I liked MapleStory. [I read somewhere that little Cho created MapleStory characters and sold them]
Yu: Your friend said, "Thanks to Volume 1 of The Theory of Exorcism in the End Times that you bought me. I ended up buying the entire volume. It's great to see you succeed. Thanks for playing such beautiful music for me. [I think I saw this comment where Cho's friend said Cho bought him a book as a birthday gift and played the piano for him that day] Coming your way, I hope your days are full of good things. Stay healthy."

Cho: Hyung-sup?
Yu: You seem to remember.
Cho: Yes. The Theory of Exorcism, I was reading that book a lot back then. I think it's Hyung-sup. [Theory of Exorcism in elementary school, LOL]
