  • LCDR Monica Borza is the current Flight Surgeon for the U.S. Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels. A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, LCDR Borza was exposed to the Navy at a young age through her father’s service as a Flight Officer attached to an E-2 Hawkeye squadron. Living in close proximity to Naval Air Station Oceana, Borza’s enthusiasm for naval aviation grew as she enjoyed watching aircraft circulate in the landing pattern above her family’s home.
After graduating from Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School in 2008, Borza attended Virginia Tech University and began volunteering at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters in Norfolk, VA. Inspired by the Hospital’s staff and their efforts to medically change people’s lives, Borza applied to and was accepted at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned her commission as an Ensign in the Navy in 2012.
Graduating with a D.O. in 2016, Borza reported to Naval Medical Center San Diego, California for an internship before being accepted to attend the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida. As part of her education to become a Naval Flight Surgeon, Borza and her classmates participated in flight training alongside aviation cadets to better acclimate the physicians to the mental and physical demands placed on the aviators.
Borza received her Naval Flight Surgeon wings in June of 2018 and reported to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMAF) 314, the “Black Knights” at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAR) Miramar, California. During her tenure with VNAF 314, Borza attended the 2018 Miramar Air Show, where she met LCDR Juan Guerra, who was serving as the Flight Surgeon for the Blue Angels at the time and shared insight about his role on the Team.
With her interest piqued, Borza submitted an application for the Flight Surgeon of the Blue Angels and was assigned to the team for the 2021 and 2022 air show seasons. In her role as Flight Surgeon, LCDR Borza serves as the primary care physician for the pilots and crew on the Team.
The Flight Surgeon is also charged with being the lead ground safety officer for all Blue Angel practices and demos. As such, LCDR Borza observes the demos from the ground and listens to all communications, where she is able to radio feedback in real-time to mitigate any possible safety issues. Following each demonstration, the pilots will debrief the flight which includes an assessment by the Flight Surgeon.
LCDR Borza’s role also extends to community outreach, which she cites as one of the more fulfilling aspects of her job. On most Fridays throughout the air show season, Borza and other members of the Team make visits to local schools, veteran organizations, and hospitals around the country. “It is so special and rewarding to have that time on the road and engage with someone that may not be having the greatest of times and hopefully uplifting their spirits. It’s truly special”.

As a former Blue Angel in 1971-72, Monica is one very impressive Naval Flight Surgeon. She is articulate, dedicated, talented and has an excellent perspective on the demands of her medical profession, especially the Blue Angels. She is an incredible professional and is definitely a team player which is a crucial factor to the Blue Angels long history of success and admiration.. Monica is and will always be an inspiration to others to pursue their goals. It was enlightening to see her video and I wish her all the best for continued success! Striker

Does the Flight Surgeon get the ability to have a longer Duty with The Blue Angels? If there were 1 position that I could see being beneficial to allowing a career out of it, it would be the Flight Surgeon, ESPECIALLY someone like her!!!

@strikerswitzer8339 Were you in Threshold? Looking up the teams from '71 and '72, there are names I remember, including yours, from the movie so I figure that's when filming was done(?). I didn't see the Blues live until '98 (my first vacation to NAS Pensacola) but I've watched the Thunderbirds since the F-4 days and that's the most awesome demo platform.

@@KyleCowden - Kyle, I was the opposing solo in 1971 and Skip was the Lead. Most of the filming was done with the 1970 team and they did some follow ups on the 71 team. I’m guesstimating about 70/ 30. I agree with you about the F-4 being the most impressive but I’m bias and times have changed. The teams have done a good job with the F/ A 18 and the Super Hornet is really impressive. Glad you were able to make it to P’Cola. Hopefully, you had time to visit the National Naval Aviation Museum. Striker

One more incredible chapter of the Blue Angels day to day working routine and its actors behind the curtains.
It was a pleasure to listen to Monica's every word describing what she goes thru and goes thru her in fulfilling her daily duties with the team.
She seems to be that iron hand in a velvet glove probably more velvet than iron I'm inclined to think after watching her speak.
    Excellent video as usual.
Looking forward to every single upcoming release on my much- loved Blue Angels.

I love the fact that you are the chief safety officer. This bespeaks volumes to the level of professionalism and understanding you and your team have achieved. Great teams are only as great as their leaders. I am sure this is echoed by your commanders and the NAVY writ large. It also shows how much TRUST YOU HAVE EARNED! (Having worked with similar groups I can attest that is no small feat!)
My wish for you and your team is to be well, be safe, and most of all don’t forget TO HAVE FUN!

"Doc" if 130 flights are required for a Demo show, who was Solo #5 in 2021 whilst "Chewy" was getting rehabbed, please? I felt he was a little snubbed as "Chompers" called his overly nose down mistake, "gross" in 1st part of Debrief, he never really got any redeeming love afterwards? Watched it Monday at 5pm in Dallas, and again at 2:40 in Dallas yesterday, and I was grinning ear-to-ear for 93 minutes straight, twice, but I was a little concerned for him and his family when they go and watch it? Lastly, The Flight Surgeon, how long is your duty, it's a much more specific role, and just like Cmdr Woolidge getting 9 yrs in total as "Boss" do they allow you a 7-10 yrs Duty as "Doc"? Loved it so much, was shocked @GlenPowell got 1st of 6 Producers' credit, and JJ Abrams was with last 2 Producers' credits (I worked 3 ½ yrs in Motion Picture Industry before getting married nearly 28 yrs ago), was Glen the on site Producer then? Did he get to ride backseat at all or often? I'm to understand he'll be in Maverick 2 just announced, which is fantastic... but initially all that love usually first comes at a person's first time seeing The Blue Angels at a live Airshow, and its something you never forget! Lastly, Blue Angel #7 was Narrator, and #8 was a female closest to door during briefings, is that correct, are they both pilots that also practice and learn to cover in the event such as Chewy had??? That's all, just really enjoyed everything I took in, as soon as MGM releases on Prime, I'll buy it to watch again and again!!! Came home and watched Maverick again last night 😅 Be Blessed "Doc" be very blessed ❤

    • @siouxperb5570
      @siouxperb5570 12 днів тому +2

Just to answer your last question: #7 is indeed the narrator, and is one of the (usually 3) tactical jet selectees each season. Upon joining the team, the new selectees will be assigned their position for the next season, either 2, 3, 6, or 7. (2 may or may not be open, as it opens every other season). If assigned as 7, that pilot will narrate the show and serve as the advance pilot and VIP pilot giving rides to media, etc at show sites. That pilot serves a 3 year tour of duty with the team. After completing a year as narrator, that pilot will move into a demo position, where they will fly for 2 years. Tradition for the past 25 years is to transition to the opposing solo (6), but could be assigned to fly 3, as has been tradition in the 70s and 80s.
#8 is a naval (or Marine) flight officer, which of course is not a pilot, but a specific role applied for. #8 serves 2 years as events coordinator before returning to an operational squadron.
