🇬🇧 Situated on the outskirts of Gijón in the parish of Cabueñes, the Universidad Laboral de Gijón - more commonly referred to as La Laboral or Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura - is Spain’s largest building at a whopping 270,000 m2 and is one of the most creative and monumental spaces in Asturias. La Laboral was built between 1946 and 1956 and was declared a monument of cultural interest under the Spanish heritage register in 2016.
La Laboral was originally built in response to a tragic mining accident in the region. The authorities of the time decided to create a place that could look after 1,000 mining orphans. The children would have access to everything they needed to complete their education: accommodation, schooling, industrial workshops, a farm, sporting facilities and more.
While the project was under way, the Ministry of Work decided to set up what were known as the Universidades Laborales (an education initiative in Spain targeting working class children). Hence, the building became the Universidad Laboral de Gijón. It was run by the Jesuits with the help of Clarist nuns.
At its peak it was the second largest education institute in Spain with 3,000 pupils on its roll. However, by the 1980s it was almost totally abandoned. The Government of Asturias subsequently established the Ciudad de la Cultura (City of Culture) foundation in the 1990s and the building was overhauled between 2001 and 2007. Today, the city of Gijón can boast having a truly monumental space which provides a whole host of cultural services.

La he visto hace unos 15 días.
Si me ha gustado tu recorrido.
This is so insane!
Thank you very much for your comment. I am glad that you like it 😊
Hola! Well, this comment will be a quick 'take two' because the comment that I just wrote disappeared when I hit the 'shift' key and whatever else. 😒 Ugh, I hate when that happens! Since I forget exactly what I wrote, (and you'll never read it), let me just say it was brilliant, insightful, thoughtful, noteworthy, quotable, timeless and almost poetic in its linguistic beauty. I think future generations would have been inspired by reading it, but alas, it's gone. Poof! 😀
But anyway, very enjoyable tour, and the background about the origin of the building and the orphans was especially interesting. Hope it's feeling more like autumn there now. It's a rainy and cool Saturday here in New England, but at least the foliage on the trees is looking beautiful these days.
Take care!
Hola!
Oh! I'm sorry to hear that, especially since we have missed the opportunity to read your extraordinary message. Without a doubt, it is a sad day for humanity 😂
Jokes aside, I am sorry that this happened to you again, it is a pleasure for me to read your comments. Sorry that I responded so late but at the moment I am traveling again (although this time outside of Spain) and I barely have time to take a look at my channel. I'm glad you enjoyed the tour.
Fortunately, autumn has finally arrived in Spain. We have had several days of rain, which is a good thing after so much heat. Although I also hope that the days I film a tour look like a sunny day 😝
Thank you very much as always for your visit. I hope you are enjoying a beautiful fall there.
See you! Take care!
