I was there! with my good mate Adrian Pate. We were at Highbury when we won the league and outside the 'Council House' when we brought the trophy back. We did much the same a year later when the Villa won the European Cup. Happy days. Wherever you are Adrian Pate..thanks for those great memories which we shared. (John Goalby).

Great era in English football, the trophies were getting shared more in the 70s and early eighties, the F A cup was so hard to win. As a young lfc fan Gary Shaw looked the next best thing...bad injury.

Thankyou so much for taking the time to post this. I was 15 when all this took place, I went to every home game and went to some away, forest, stoke and arsenal. 58,000 at highbury that day 20,000 Villa and I still have the ticket stub with cost of £1,80p on it. Had to save for that game as juvenile standing on the Holte End was only 50p.

Thanks for putting this back up, it's a good one. They were a much better team than they were given credit for, Morley and Cowans were flair players and Shaw a great finisher. And every English team would've liked a Peter Withe the way the game was played here in the 80s.

Thanks v much for posting Olly. Chris Lightbown wrote a great article in the Sunday Times after the Villa win at Everton (I think) criticising the lack of recognition for AVFC and praising their flair and sportsmanship.

Winning the league was no fluke they built from a successful team in 77 and just got better with every season. 1980-81 season was their peak they destroyed most opposition with astounding football. Unfortunately injuries to key players in 83 after winning the European cup and super cup led to a slide in form but it was great period for villa fans.

I was a 10 year old arsenal fan at Highbury that day. I couldn't quite work out why Villa fans were cheering so much. Pele was there that day as well. Well done Villa, although I did have a big soft spot for that Ipswich team back then.

I'm a Manchester City fan, and I wonder what our 80s would've been like if Ron Saunders had stayed. Like this I imagine.

Goes to show much all these money rich Arabs with all their billions have ruined the game! Pushes teams like us into mediocrity when we were once a top team. UTV!

reminds me of the current champs, how the so called minnows have come through from time to time, every ten years or so!

Villa were nowhere minnows in 1981. They had been just outside the top five.
The league was much more open in those days and Villa were talked about as possible contenders before the 1980-81 season. With some of the best young players around at that time and that season they were the third best supported club in the country.
