GNET Data Center yup! I actually hooked it up to my super micro 2U freenas box and am using 24 450gb 15k SAS drives in RaidZ3 for isci distribution on my network. Works great! Edit: i used an lsi 9200 E something card with a qsfp to sf8088 cable. Not sure what will happen when I have to reboot freenas though. Ill build that bridge when I have too. :)

This worked for me, to use Netapp SAS SSD: install a HBA (or a RAID card in IT mode). I used an LSI 9212i card, with a SATA-SAS connector to the drive. The following depends on card BIOS (and is from memory, steps may be inaccurate - just get to the drive list) Power on, await LSI boot messages. Press CTRL-C to access configuration manager Highlight the 9212, press enter Cursor down to the Direct Attached Storage entry, press enter Select the drive, press Alt-D that shows the drive properties. Select Format drive, enter, F Await format to finish Reboot, and use sg_utils to format the drive. Using a Netapp HD I was able to use the drive just using sg_utils, but with SSD needed to do a format within the HBA Something to note: despite this, I was unable to: - Use the drive as a boot disk: Linux installer could see it, install to it, but the system would not boot from it. It was the only drive in the system, and set to Boot in the HBA. A Netapp HD was fine as a boot disk, as was an HP disk (that refused to work until formatted with sg_utils) - Use Netapp SSDs as RAID members. LSI manager returned INC RAID in the status screen; apparently drive does not support extended SMART commands... I suspect its a proprietary firmware issue to lock enterprise users into using Netapp supplied drives, and re-using Netapp drives elsewhere. I do know that failed drives are often reconditioned and supplied as replacements for failed drives.
Good tutorial, this is helpful, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm doing this with a DS4243 disk shelf connected to my R610. :)
Sweet! :) did it work?

Can you do multiple drives at the same time or just one at a time?
SOU6900 multiple using the '&&' command between them.
Format unit command: Data protect, type: sense key; write protected media?
FORMAT UNIT failed
Hi - if the sg_format util is failing from the first part then it could be a sign of a faulty drive, or a SED (Self Encrypting Drive) ?
Thank you
