  • If you get an "The request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error." when trying to use a hard Drive or SSD that might have come from an enterprise storages system. This might just be how to fix that. (and using Windows this time!!)
When You have - 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐝 - this video, you have my permission to go and download the sg3_utils,, here : sg.danny.cz/sg/sg3_utils.html (files are prety far down the page)
And you will also need the "cygwin1.dll" file,, I got that form here : www.dll-files.com/cygwin1.dll...
There is an 32bit and a 64bit,, I used the 64bit for the Microsoft Server 2022.
    The commands I used..
𝙨𝙜_𝙨𝙘𝙖𝙣 -- for listing your drives and see what "PDx" you need to put in
    𝒔𝒈_𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕 --𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒕 --𝒔𝒊𝒛𝒆 512 𝑷𝑫𝒙 -- x is the number that your drive got,,like PD2 or PD1

They don't format these to 520/528 to "mess with you". This is part of the SCSI T10 standard for data protection information. Basically the extra bytes are used for checksums of the 512 bytes, etc. in enterprise storage solutions.

In fact it is quite attractive to have storage systems supporting T10-PI, it solves a lot of problems not easily solved otherwise.
I wish for linux to get proper support in the near future for the same reason.
For now i enjoy using 3PAR storage which uses 520b sectors - it is far superior to 512b.

Done on my HP DL380 G9 Smart array P440ar controller in HBA mod and on ESXI. Best way it worked for me: run win server vm,mount, wait for appear in Device Mamager, than Format drive to 512, With cmd diskpart clean and convert mbr, unmount, reboot ESXI(else its glitchy and broken) and done. it worked great even with truenas zfs. Tip: you can format more drives in multiple CMDs at the same time. I spend 2 days on it, so you dont have to :-)
Be patient, unformated disks may be pretty slow to initialize on the system.👍

Thanks for the video, the proposed system works for me.
Using an LSI 9211-8i card (Dell brand) it took 2.5 hours to reformat a 1.2TB mechanical drive on Windows 10.
Depending on the number of connectors on the controller it is possible to reformat multiple disks at the same time (in my case 8) simply by using multiple command prompt windows; the time required to complete the operation has not changed from 1 to 8 drives.

This is how I used to convert Netapp drives for repurposing, however the linux version :D
-The reason in the most part for the extra bytes here and there is for them to store additional data relating to needs of recovery in whatever form they require. Kinda get the same within standards like SATA verses SAS, like kinda..

@@MyPlayHouse if this ssd is a 400gb model then they may have set 25% op to make them into a write intensive ssd for more endurance so only 300gb ish available, I done it with enterprise Samsung ssds in the past usually you can reset it by passing max command but this is specific to enterprise Intel and Samsung ssds, this will erase the drive when you use the command (yes to more space if it has been set to a smaller LBA size before)
with Samsung and Intel usually the enterprise management DC tool
I actually believe the Samsung DC tool can use the LBA limit command with any ssd that supports LBA resize (sure I was using it on a micron and Intel and Samsung enterprise ssds)

It IS a 400GB drive, but has been adjusted to 300GB to increase endurance.
For example, 2TB SSDs are commonly sold as 2TB to consumers (low endurance), they are adjusted to 1.92TB for medium endurance, and typically 1.6TB for high endurance drives.
    This is common practice.
But a lot of the high-end enterprise storage systems lower the capacity even further to increase endurance.
This is common for EMC, 3PAR, NetApp, IBM etc.
For example, 3PAR 920GB SSDs, are actually 1TB SSDs
    3PAR 1.92TB SSDs are actually 2TB SSDs.

And, on the top end (3DWPD-10DWPD+ class), Micron 480GB SSD are actually have 1TB NAND inside! Some Micron enterprise SSD can be user adjusted using their public ssd tools (it uses common ata language "set max lba" or something) Some Samsung SSD does not have OP by default--they expose all NAND to the system. To set the OP size, just trim all sectors, and make a blank, unformatted partition at the end of LBA range. It will automatically use them as the OP, pSLC, and other housekeeping things there.
