OMG... I was a tween when Xanadu came out. Always love Olivia Newton John. 💜💜💜
SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS! It's one of my all-time fave movies! It's got skating and Greek mythology and a great soundtrack (I'm such an ELO stan!) and Gene Kelly (who was dancing on skates WAAAY back in the day...seriously look up 'Gene Kelly dances on roller skates' or whatever on UA-cam AND MARVEL AT THE LEGEND HE WAS!) and and and....YEAH. This film is totally my jam and one of my biggest guilty pleasures! ❤
Always adored the soundtrack... ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) are an all time favourite
so excitedd, cause I actually auditioned for a role in the xanadu musical last week
Gene Kelly was great in it... he started skating when he was young along with his brother.
I think the random skating from Olivia Newton John's character was just a sort of 'Southern California trope' from the time period. I grew up in the 70s/80s and seriously, it was like every time a movie was in the LA area, especially by the beach, there was roller skating in it -- LOL! (I'm especially thinking of films like 'Roller Boogie' from 1979, which is a similar cheesefest!). It was just such a huge craze at the time! 😆
If you want more cheesy 80s skate films, 'Solarbabies' (1986) is a really wild ride. It's a post-apocalyptic skating movie (I think it was going for a Mad Max vibe, but fell short) -- LOL!
Even though I grew up in the 80s, I somehow didn't remember it from back then, but a few years ago when we were having a night-before-the-bout dinner with the roller derby refs and officials (I was an NSO at the time), we were at this restaurant that plays B-movies and that one came on and had us all engrossed with how unbelievably weird it was!
Definitely not a 'good' film, but on the campy end of things, it's a fun watch!
I'm a man and I do love that movie. I've heard that it's somehow a "Gay's or girls" movie. I do love it. I also love for example using rollers with led wheels. And?. Any problem?. I do have the vinyl too and I love to play it on my Technics player while having the cover in my hands.
It's not a rollerskating movie. it just has rollerskating in it
Oh, Zeus DEFINITELY had/has a wife (Hera), but he was someone who also slept around A TON in his time (especially falling in love with humans -- male and female). Though, interestingly, the wiki for the movie says that Kira's mother is not Hera, but the goddess of memory, Mnemosyne (which tracks, as she is the mother of the 9 Muses in Classical Mythology). But then Zeus fathered loads of beings outside his marriage to Hera.
And Kira's 'real name' probably is Terpsichore (the muse of dance), but they probably chose not to use that as it can be difficult to pronounce for a lot of people! 😆😆 (Also the film was supposedly inspired by the 1947 film 'Down to Earth' with Rita Hayworth as Terpsichore, so that also helps confirm her name).
Sorry, aside from loving this film, I'm also a Classical Studies nerd. 😃
