I'm surprised there isn't a video called "1000 mysterious songs that can't be identified". It could be a series. Every recording studio that has ever existed is very likely to have tracks in various stages of completion that were abandoned by musicians for some reason. Customers of a music studio do not take ownership of their recordings until the studio has been paid for their services. Sometimes, a band breaks up before they pay the studio and none of the former members want to pay the entire bill themselves, so they just leave the tracks at the studio. Other times, the musicians decide they don't like what they recorded and choose not to pay. There are lots of other scenarios where a completed recording is abandoned. It could be years later, and an employee of a studio runs across these tracks and likes something, so they make a copy to listen to. Then, their friends get hold a copy, then some one plays it at a club, or uploads it to the internet. Now it is available for the whole world to hear, and everyone is trying to chase the ghost who wrote the song. When a music studio shuts down, they often sell their assets to another studio or an individual who inherits these tracks with no explanation about who made the original recording. There's also the bands who record and receive their recordings, but just doesn't do anything with them. With home studios reaching a point that a high quality recordings can be made a home, there are likely thousands of unreleased songs sitting on people's hard drives all over the world. I personally possess several hundred unreleased songs that will not likely ever see the light of day. If you have friends who work in studios, you probably know it is quite common for them to bulk download everything a studio has onto an external hard drive. This includes software and recordings. Then someone like me, can't let a goldmine of stuff like that cross my path without making a copy for myself. I have terabytes of data that I've collected, going back to the early 1990s. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

why is pretty much every mysterious song an 80s/80s-style song? like i'm serious, is there something about music recording and categorizing in the 80s that makes it inherently flawed and easy for songs to become so "mysterious"?
My theory is that technology was advanced enough to tape-record songs off of the radio, but because they didn't have the internet, some of the music got buried in time. This might be why underground music from the '90s and '00s are better tracked. It makes me wonder what the songs that weren't lucky enough to be taped off of the radio sound like. There are probably songs from the '60s and '70s that were played on the radio that haven't been listened to in 40-60 years, and have zero trace on the internet. In terms of mysterious music, '80s songs seem to be in the Goldilocks Zone.
I think it was a time of transition. 80s people, as CW Schultz said, had the means to record songs from the radio, play them again and again and make fondle memories. Also, they were young enough to use online communities to ask about and share them.
@@ivan4087 No. The Internet we know today was actually created at the dusk of 1980's (it wasn't called Internet yet though). Yes, the very first network protocols that were used to connect computers predate the Internet, the very first wide network in use wa ARPANET, dating into 1960's, and used FORTRAN language for communication. The Internet as we know today came in the second half of 1980's (although still not named Internet), and the very first protocol defined was SMTP (yes, e-mail predates the Internet). In 1980's you wouldn't actually find many people that even had a computer, let alone have a wide network connection for their computer. In socialist countries, computers really started to emerge at the dusk of 1980's (1988-1989), some sort of industrial computers were actually used in 1960's and 1970's, but these computers were so large that they were built into a whole big room where all the logic was stored, and operators were controlling it through a terminal. Computers that were common in 1950's and 1960's in USA. Typical average home definitely wouldn't use one of these.
I swear, someday I'm going to send my teenage years' band first unreleased demo wild on the internet, claiming it's some sort of mysterious song, sit back and with luck enjoy the following snowballing of it all.
Very well done video. It's hard for me to believe that you have less subscribers than me, considering your content is way more interesting and enjoyable. Let's correct that. Thanks for your hard work, my friend. :)
Glad you're enjoying the videos, Dan. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. New episode coming in March! Thank you for the kind words.
HUGE news btw! I'm waiting on a reply from a user at Discogs known as Cuttermachine. I contacted him about a release that was suspected to be "C.I.A" called "Coming Home" by 4th Floor. They were a Canadian New Wave band that self released a self tilted ep in 1984. Cuttermachine replied to me and said they were the same song! I asked him if he had an mp3 he could send to verify this and told him how the internet has been looking for it.
Apperently this isn't the first time its been said that its by 4th floor. An upload of the song from a few months ago even labels it as 4th Floor. For some reason, people in that comments section say it's not it. However i was told that it was. I don't know how they know it's not it. I'm still waiting on a reply from someone on discogs to see if i can get an mp3 of the song/album sent to me.
A lot of the problem is that these music groups don't get a record deal or they have one hit that people don't care about, they don't get enough radio time , limited vinyl release and no CD release making it harder to find the tracks. And because D.J.s don't tell you who performs them which is ashame because there are so many 80s and 90s tracks unreleased.
Same. Strangers, It's Alive, and TMMSOTI are now some of my favorite obscure songs. Edit: Dragon Ball Q and So Totally Insane as well, in fact, these two might be my top favorites of all the lost songs.
Has anyone ever contacted the boards of canada about the most mysterious song? Considering the song was played at some point on their mixtapes maybe they can help find the people they probably dont remember who the band is but might be able to help give clues
Hi, Dakota. Since many of my sources for that segment came from BoC's (Boards of Canada, as opposed to Blue Oyster Cult, lol) wiki, I figured that was all the information presently available. While wikis aren't always reliable and can easily be vandalized by trolls, contributors at fandoms have a tendency to do their due diligence and would likely have already tried to get a completed tracklist of the mixtape. In general, I'm a bit hesitant about reaching out to bands/musicians directly because there have been several reports of people getting flooded with emails about a mysterious song (such as DJ Paul Baskerville, who may have been the one to play "Like the Wind" on the radio back in the '80s-this ended up being a dead-end, btw). Furthermore, knowing how private BoC is, I felt like prying would be somewhat disrespectful despite intentions being good. It's my understanding (though I could be wrong) that admins on wikis and moderators on subreddits will be the best sources to confirm whether or not you're good to go contacting someone directly, because they're the likeliest to know if you're wasting your time with something that's already been confirmed as a dead-end. While I've been active in some searches, the majority of the information I gather is thanks to the good folks who are just as interested in discovering awesome music as I am; so, if you find anything along the way, please feel free to let me know. Thanks for watching!

Same! Before Sinking Ships was identified, a lot of people were like, "No way, it's not the same band", but they've always sound so similar to me also.
It may sound bizarre, but could Sinking Ships have been the ones to originally sing Like the Wind? This could put us one step closer to finding its origin.

No worries. That's gonna bug me that one, as it does sound so much like Nico's solo work, as it was very much inspired by medieval and more classical music and not modern at all. So I'm wondering if it could be someone influenced by her, like Diamanda Galas, she used a lot of more classical styles also, as well as having the vocal range to yodel (and scream!). Or perhaps someone like Dead Can Dance. Either way it sounds like it'd be exactly the sort of music I'd like, so now you've got me wanting to know lol.

8:25 - The issue is will the music find the audience it always deserved? All music will appeal to somebody somewhere. I have lived abroad for over 20 years and heard hundreds of good bands popular in their countries, but they were unknown in mine. And that's just the successful bands, what about the one hit indies? One musician I have listened to for decades is Jimme O'Neill, whose two Scottish bands Fingerprintz and The Silencers had little commercial success at home in the UK, never mind across the Atlantic. And yet they always had massive popularity in France, for unknown reasons. A 1990s Canadian band called The Boomers didn't do much at home (despite being fronted by Ian Thomas, writer of "Hold On" which was recorded by Santana) but were huge in Germany. I only learnt four years ago of Polish "Cold Wave" band Seikeira and their only album, "Nova Aleksandria". It's a f~~king masterpiece.

@@CWSchultz "they" have internet. it was invented in 60s

2021: "Like The Wind" aka "The most mysterious song on the Internet"... still not.
I’m sad that the song “It’s coming alive” from the top ten unidentified songs wasn’t found
The song you are looking for is "It's Alive" by Sketchpad
It's found! Thank the maker! That's a pretty awesome song for Halloween

Dude the sinking ship song sounds exactly like the mostly mysterious song
What about "Superman" from Iron maiden, Black Sabbath, etc?
@@CWSchultz oh I didnt mean me to begin with I aiukdnt even know how to begin to contact these people not even a clue so that's best left to someone who knows what they're doing anyway

Same! Before Sinking Ships was identified, a lot of people were like, "No way, it's not the same band", but they've always sound so similar to me also.
Oh my God, the vocals on the Sinking Ships song sounds EXACTLY like the vocals on "Like The Wind".
It may sound bizarre, but could Sinking Ships have been the ones to originally sing Like the Wind? This could put us one step closer to finding its origin.
Sadly they confirmed that they did NOT make "Like the Wind".

i have been looking for a song that i heard in summer of 1987, its an old Goth song but its played with organ pipes and a lady yodeling ...kinda like a waltz i have been looking for this song since i heard it back in that summer day ...the radio station was a college station from Austin Texas and it was dark and erie...i only last heard it by suprise in the spring of 1991 once more ( i was in AWE...) it was show cased in a Spanish Show called Occurio Asi and the show theme was about Vampires its a rare Cultish Song ...from my research i have been told it could be a one of a kind but i know its a Waltz like beat but the instruments are not electrinical or no guitars ...nothing modern ...its Gothic Alright....can any one help
Old goth song with organ instantly makes me think Nico, perhaps the song Janitor of Lunacy, that's quite yodel-y in parts.
@@kittyvomit thank you for your response but not quite the sound its not a modern song..by means of saying that is that the song is almost a a cathedral type song morbid in style and the yodel/chant is of a classical type ...thank you so much for your insight tho
@@kittyvomit yes i agree i have been looking for this song for more than 30 yrs and no luck ....its a waltz .. like a carousel pipe organs ......eerie tones and the its a lady ...kinda like opera yodeling in a cry like stylistic but its played with classical instruments ...once i was told it could be a specific "sect" hymn or priest ...it was used on the televisied skit about Vampires where they interviewed a woman that would sleep in a cemetery this debuted in march or april in 1991 in a spanish show called Occurio Asi....its Ultra Rare

Great song. I have no idea. I'll post it on Reddit to see if anyone else knows. For the lyrics, here's what I heard:
She was some kind of wonderful
Treated me like a king
But she gave me just a little too much freedom
For I could get away with anything
From her eyes came…
Bullets
She shot me through the heart when my back with turned
Bullets
When I crossed a lover, that's the lesson that I've learned
Bullets
If looks could kill, oh whoa oh
Her eyes were blazing fire
Woman jealous, burning hot
Then she took one look at me, and then my lover
She turned around and shot
I was mortally wounded
Oh, what a fool I've been
Don't take this dame before your lover
You could be next, my friend
From her eyes came…
Bullets
She shot me through the heart when my back with turned
Bullets
I crossed a lover, and got nothing in return
Bullets
If looks could kill, in Hell I'm gonna burn
