I recreated Lindsey Stirling's violin harness! | cheap & easy DIY

  • I wanted to have a go at recreating the violin harness (or strap, if you will) which Lindsey Stirling wears when performing. And in this video, I'm making it myself, for less than €10. And it even works!
    If you'd like to make a violin harness too, you will need roughly 1.5 to 2 meters of (non-elastic) strap, a clasp and needle and thread. A buckle slide to adjust the length of your strap can be handy too, although there's actually only one size that works, and that size is TIGHT. So if it's tight, it's good. ;-)

    OMG! The timing of your video is perfect! I have been wondering about how to make a violin harness like Lindsey for my violins because I have been having left shoulder pain really bad when I play and I’m thinking this harness will help a lot and not to mention free me up for more movement like LINDSEY! My only prob is the electric violin that I have is called the NS Design NXT and it has a different shape and you can’t use a regular shoulder rest with it as it has its own. Any suggestions? You’re so creative and I’d appreciate the help! I’d rather get the Yamaha but it’s not in my budget right now lol and I’ve messaged so many other violinists for help but no one has yet to help lol. Any suggestions would be SO appreciated! P.S. I’m working on the Little Mermaid cola. And will be sending my video soon!🥰💖

      Ooh, that's great to hear! 😁 It's really easy to make and I hope it helps! I experience some left shoulder pain as well sometimes, but I'm not sure the harness helps for that because you're still holding your left arm up in the same way. I often do arm and shoulder stretches to help prevent it.
      I don't know about the NS Design violins, but I've heard they come with a strap too. I just looked up a video about it and I see what you mean about the shoulder rest. There is only one attachment piece in the middle, so I would make a short loop from a strap and sew it around that attachment piece, and than put the left arm strap through that loop before putting your arm in. Hope that helps!
      And great to hear you're practicing for the Little Mermaid collab! 😊🎻

    Singer-violinists will greatly appreciate this. Also those who teach all day long could spare their necks a lot. Nicely done! Will try adding some padding for the armpits.

    I tried a quick snap strap that goes under the chin rest/tail piece and under the right arm. For the other strap I cut button holes at both ends. I remove the shoulder rest feet and insert them into the button holes. Reattach the feet. This keeps the strap from moving. Insert the left arm thru the shoulder rest strap, then snap in the right shoulder strap.

    Thanks so much! I've been trying to figure out the best way to support a viola d'amore to relieve neck strain (it's got a long and hefty pegbox for 14 pegs). I've seen a different approach by Garth Knox, but he doesn't dance around or headbang :) I will definitely give yours a try!

    Marijke is Cute, Charming and Talented all simultaneously. What more could a woman ask for? Well, perhaps a morbidly, Obese bank account. I liked the background music too. I tried to find one of these Violin harness's on Amazon.commie. Unfortunately, not available. I might have to build my own like Marijke did. Thanks for the idea.

      Aaw thanks. 😊 And yes, definitely make your own, you're done in no time! Figuring out how to make the strap adjustable took the longest time (and was in hindsight not even neccessary). Apart from that, pinning and trying it on before you sew it is probably the most work.

    How does the shoulder rest stay on the violin without slipping off?

    • @MarijkeViolin

      Because it sits quite tightly on the violin. If yours isn't, you can make it tighter.

    i know this is not really the topic of the video but i actually hesitate beetween yamaha sv 200 and yamaha sv 250. The point is i really want the violin to work with wireless system and i don't find clear anwser. I thought it was necessary to hold the electronic separatly on yourself with yamaha 250 but i don't see anything like this on lindsey stirling's violin

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  10 місяців тому +1

      I once asked the same question to the guys at Electric Violin Shop, and they said the SV-200 was the better choice because of the built-in electronics. The SV-250 has that control box that goes on your belt which is just annoying. Lindsey has this box strapped to the back side of the violin.

      @@MarijkeViolinhi! Lindsey actually has a custom 9v battery box that screws to the bottom of her violin! It’s built to be flush with the instrument and I actually was able to get my hands on my own! They made very few and my friend at yamaha told me they don’t have any anymore!

    I wonder how many violins she's broken doing all that dancing. I don't think Yitzak Perlman or Jean Luc Ponty would try that. Check out Katherine Andrick playing Allan Holdsworth's Temporary Fault violin solo on UA-cam. If I played violin, I would want to sound like Allan but dancing at the same time would be a disaster.

    • @MarijkeViolin
      @MarijkeViolin  10 місяців тому

      I hope no violins were broken. 😋 The tailpiece gut is very strong and can easily withstand the force. The great players of the earth would ofcourse not do this, but luckily it's not my goal either to reach such a level. I want to play and have fun. And things like this are a lot of fun for me and get me super excited. 😉

    As John Lee Sanders said if you want to electrify a violin my not just play electric guitar. Better to put a violin up to a microphone as pugging into the body of a wooden violin changes the sound and the electric violins like any eg Yamaha etc have a different sound.
