What were DONUTS like in 1803? |Let's Make Them| Real Historic Recipe

- What if the best donut recipe was actually one from 220 years ago? You have to try these! Fried in hot lard and made from scratch, these donuts are one of the best historic recipes you can enjoy.
All spices used were kindly donated by our local tea and spice shop, Quientesential Riverfront Teas & Spices. If you ever visit Ste. Genevive Missouri please see our friend's store, which has been open since 1806.
Check out our 2nd channel ^_^ where we eat and review these historic dishes, for better or for worse.

At the end of my videos you will find an image of the original recipe (or reciept as they used to be called) as it was written in the cookbook published in 1803. For those of you at home please refer to the recipe below which I have translated into modern directions. Thank you for watching ^_^ !
Dough Nuts, 1803
3 & 1/3 cups of flour
1/4 pounds of butter, softened
1/2 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of dry, active yeast
1 cup of warm milk (More or less depending on however much will make up the dough)
Lard, for frying
Combine your flour, sugar and yeast. Warm up 1 cup of milk until warm but not scalding. To your dry ingredients add your softened butter and milk. Continue to add milk until you have formed a dough similar to bread dough. Set aside in a warm place to rise for one hour. After one hour gently knead the dough then tear off small chunks from your dough and roll into balls the size of walnuts. Be sure that they are not too big or when you go to fry them the centers may not cook all the way through. Once all of your dough has been formed up into your desired shape cover again and let rise for another hour. Once the hour is up fry them in hot lard. Be sure that the lard is not too hot, as we want the donuts to cook well all the way through. These cook fast! Check them constantly and flip them when one side is golden. When the donut is a golden brown it is ready.
Optional: While they are still hot you may roll them in powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar. These are delicious! Enjoy.
I cannot wait to try this!
And I thought that donut holes were a relatively recent invention!!!
Mmm
Thank you Justine
Thank you so much for a modern version of the recipe and congratulations on achieving 1 million subscribers!
I absolutely love that you don't add music to your videos. It's so relaxing to watch and to hear the actual sounds of everything.
I'm just the opposite 😄 I miss the music, but I like the non-musical ones, too. I wish it were 50/50. This video is one I wish had had music, because this one reminded me of a cool Fall morning making these donuts and the serenity of it all.
I love that’s there’s no music too. You can hear all the details of everything.
I love the videos without the music also. Real life sounds are the best
Unless the music fits from that era I wouldn't mind but I enjoy her videos without it.

Congratulations on one million!
Omg I just noticed. Congratulations!
Well deserved ❤🎉
Love how Justine always smiles when she tastes the food she makes.
Me to she has such a sweet smile and personality
This is my favorite receipt you have done! My grandma would make donuts similar to this when I was young. She would get biscuits in a canister and make donuts with the holes in it and cook them in oil. Then us kids got to put them in a plastic bag that had sugar in it and shake the bag. It always resulted in the best sugar donuts I have ever had. Great memory!
Thank you Chris and thank you for sharing such a lovely memory! See you on the chew chat.
We did that too
Mmm! Looks yummy! There's a story about a frontier woman in Nebraska who was home alone one day when a group of Native American men walked through her door. She didn't know what to do, so she made them donuts, which they gobbled up. When her husband returned, the men tried to negotiate a trade for the wife. Donuts are that awesome!
In the Netherlands it is tradition to always bake these balls on December 31, to celebrate the old and new year. We call them oliebollen and sprinkle currants and raisins in the dough. We eat them all day with sugar sprinkled on them of course. Delicious!
My grandmother used to make these. It's nice to see you bring them back. And sugar is only bad for the completion of you over indulge in processed sugar.
I love watching Justine she's really calm and puts so much love in her cooking, she's an artist and she's also real funny always makes me laugh, she's amazing 😂😂
If I was 110 years younger, I’d ask her to marry me!😊
Congratulations on one million subscribers!!! You deserve it! Those doughnuts look delicious!
As a guy I greatly appreciate that you make these videos. I grew up in the Scouting program within the church we attended, we often would do a lot of old school pioneer projects the boys and men did in the infancy of America's growing up. These videos you make are a very respectful nod back to those early times that were extremely difficult to live and survive in. Thank you I look forward to watching your videos. Have a very nice day. ❤❤❤❤
Think I'll make some now. I'm salivating!
So happy you made it 1 Mil- this site has been a relief from the sites that are hard to watch or listen to!!
If anyone can't understand the quantity
1 pound =4 cups of flour
1/4 pound= 1 cup so take 1 cup sugar, 1 cup oil/butter
2 tbsp yeast and enough warm milk, or water to make a thin sticky dough
Keep for 1 hour till it rises then make balls and keep for another 1 hour then deep fry in oil
Serve with powdered sugar
The cabin and surrounding area is so beautiful in the summer!!
This is the best channel on UA-cam. I'm a published author and I write historical fiction novels following one family's genealogy from the 1600s-1920s. It's so cool to watch this video and picture my 1700s/early 1800s-era characters doing things like this. It has made my writing so much easier when it comes to the "everyday life" scenes where they might be cooking or doing laundry. And the sources you provide at the end are so helpful because then I can go look them up myself. Historical accuracy is important to me in my work. Knowing that my characters might have been enjoying "Dough Nuts" is so fun!
If/when I ever do include any scene inspired by this channel, I will 100% be sure to list your channel as a source in the acknowledgments. Thank you for all your uploads! My best to you and your husband
my great grandma used to dip them in maple syrup after she fried them on cookstove; my childhood favorite. I am 63 now and still remember making them with her as a little girl.
What a wonderful IDEA❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Here in Brazil we eat donuts this way, but we call it "sonho" or "dream" in English. The format is also a ball, and we roll them in sugar too. You can buy one of these in every single bakery around the country.
Love the way you cooked it! ❤
These look insanely delicious. Hope you made at least a million, we're all on our way over!
You had me at lard…😂🤤🤤
Fill them with Jam like strawberry, raspberry or cherry after frying and you technically have that what we call "Berliner" or "Pfannkuchen" in German. This also reminds me of "Quarkbällchen" (curdrolls) and "Muzemandel/Mutzemandeln" (fried dough looking like an almond). Both dishes are fried, too and look a bit like these donuts.
I always miss the feed because I have church on Wednesday nights, but I love to run home and watch!!!! These look yummy and if I wasn’t on a diet….. I’m putting this one in the save Column! Bless you Justine!!!!😊
I want to live there and cook with you. Omg! Those look so good. But the cabin is amazing.
I found your channel 2 days ago and I have been binge watching every one. I love your house and how everything is set up - so beautiful and calming and nostalgic. I love the content/lifestyle! 🤍
Congrats on 1 Million subs, you guys deserve it and more! 💚
As I watch these videos, of course I think about how much more arduous relatively simple cooking tasks were back then, but I also often think about how virtually impossible it must’ve been for some people living in remote areas to even get their hands on some of the ingredients. The ingredients in this receipt I imagine would’ve been pretty commonplace to have though. I wonder why the spelling was changed to donuts.
She’s a great cook, baking is no problem for her, everything comes out delicious everything 😊😊😊
I like how you go about your activities with the slightest smile on your face! Very endearing!!
Congrats on reaching 1,00,000 subscribers. I eagerly await that promised dance routine.
One of my favorite channels. Keep up the good work.
They remind me of dutch ''oliebollen'' which look the same, it literally translates to Oil balls 😂. We would mainly make these around new years celebrations, and they are sooo good.
Some even say the Dutch brought oliebollen to the New Amsterdam colony (New York) and from there the doughnut was born.
@@timodaret8716 yea i wouldnt be surprised if that was the case

After two months I came back to watch these videos and I'm surprised you did this recipe!!! 😱
In my country 🇦🇷 are known as "bolas de fraile" and the recipe is exactly the same you have shown here (well, maybe the milk and butter are now more commonly replaced by water and margarine because everything is more expensive to afford each day here) and usually are eat along with a drink like tea, coffee, milk or mate.
Delicious donuts!!! Congratulations!!!
Congratulations on a million subs!
Congrats on the million Subs! Love your donuts
Fantastic recipe Justine, you’ve reached 1 million…what an achievement!!!🌟🌟👌👌👏👏😁😁
Oh wow! One million subscribers! That's quite an accomplishment! Congratulations Justine and Ron!
Congratulations on 1m. These look amazing
These are like our Dutch 'oliebollen'. We eat them at New Years Eve. You can mix currants, apple, bigareaux, a touch of cinnamon, a drop of beer through the dough. I make them every year. I like them with fine sugar and cinnamon, but most Dutch people will dus them with poederde sigaar. I love them so much!
Congrats on one million
U guys deserve it
Awesome Video !!! Keep up the good work!
Love this!! My Mama and I used to make donuts this way. We also made Danish donuts called aebelskiver. I have her pan. 💗
Yay!! One million subs! Congrats!!
Sfingi! My grandfather used to make these Italian do-nuts all the time! So good! Thankfully, I have his recipe and have tried it several times with success! Thanks, Justine! Now I’ll have to make some! 😝
