      @PhaythGaming 5 місяців тому +27

Don’t wanna write out a whole workout program but I think you have the skills to do this yourself in a few simple steps.
      1. Categorize all your favourite compound exercises into separate groups. I’d use pushing, pulling, and legs, but you could use upper, lower, or any other grouping that makes logical sense to you.
      2. Pair exercises from different groups together as super sets. One example is
      Pull: Pull up
Push: Incline bench barbell bench press
      Legs: Deadlift
That’s a killer super set. You will be dead as hell after a day of that and the only muscle you’re really missing is shoulders.
Again, this works with any combo of exercises and can be infinitely carried and evolved upon. Don’t wait for his video. Go out and make this program and do it. I believe in you, you got this.
      Another pairing I’ve done is:
      Leg: high bar squat
      Push: barbel shoulder press
      Pull: Seated cable row
Here’s an upper lower split for funsies too:
      Lower: Deadlift
Upper: under hand grip pull down (more bicep activation)
      Paired with
      Lower: Squat
      Upper: wide grip dips.
Done as two separate super sets on the day.

After seeing Doctor Mike's training I want to underline being realistic or even humble when you start training again or for the first time, proud or shame will get you nowhere but patience and consistency definitely will. I started weight training almost a year ago, at first only body weight, very light exercises 30 min. 6 days a week. Now 90 min 6 days a week, not much more than 3 lb weights and harder bodyweight training, but my muscles are starting to show and I'm 22 lb lighter. It has been a slow process, but good enough to keep me going without injury and with manageable fatigue. Of course diet was a great game changer, but consistency is still the main thing that keeps me going and makes me proud of myself. Thanks Dr. Mike and RP team for your work, wisdom and inspiration.

Thank you for this. I have a kid and a full-time job, so it's hard to find a training program that I can realistically cram into a lunch break. I can't quite do a set of push-ups so I do as many as I can on the bench then swap to chest press, but everything else is really accessible. Even 3 sets of each gives me enough time to do a warmup and get the whole thing done, in an apartment gym no less. Going to use this exact program to build consistency and then refine once I can do a bit more.

I've got a couple questions regarding this workout. First off, I love the style of supersets. I do the same thing for most of my workouts. But...
    1. Doctor Mike is a pretty big guy; I'm surprised he was so fatigued by this workout, even if it has been a while since he's pushed himself. Especially if he was a professional boxer. He clearly isn't extremely deconditioned.
    2. Those push-ups were gross. You actually lose quite a bit of chest activation the way his elbows were flared and at that width of hand placement. Get the hands closer, tuck the elbows just a little bit, and focus on the chest squeeze as you rise and at the top. Soooooo much better.
    3. For almost any goal, be it strength or hypertrophy, I recommend using a bench to rest your chest when doing rows. Especially if you haven't trained in a while. Really helps a lot when focusing on form and the squeeze. The hinge is great, but there are better times and places for it.
    4. For shoulders, I'd typically opt for the overhead press over lateral raises, but I think the latter is a fine choice for this workout. And I usually superset my shoulders with legs (typically squats), too.
    5. This kind of baffled me. First off, I'm not a fan of the flat/horizontal curl. You can't load very heavy without risk of tweaking your shoulder, especially if you're a beginner. Either way, just do an incline curl with a good stretch in the bicep. That'll do you just fine. BUT after Mike talks about how important the stretch is, he puts in skull crushers with NO stretch. I metaphorically facepalmed. Just bring the elbows closer to the top of the skull and do tricep extensions. A far superior exercise AND they're a perfect example of what Mike was just preaching. What the heck was this choice???
Mike obviously has an extensive pedigree and following, but sometimes he completely confuddles me with what he says and does. I really wish I could ask him directly, but if anyone has the patience to read this comment and answer any of these points, please educate me! : )

Aside all the great research based exercise tips, whenever Dr. Mike gets into his trash talk, it reminds me of several similarly nice Russians. Some academics, some not, but all were great at the self-deprecating trash talk and all around good and fun people to chat and discuss.
Really brings back some memories and I wonder if this is a common Russian thing.
Also fun to see how dr. Mike and Doctor Mike aren't that similar in many ways, but there is some deep commonality in their approach to things, deep and direct talk, willingness to discuss big problems, and also using similar ways of talking (eg, the rhetorical, self-answered questions).
