I'm on the fence with this one even though I support the general idea. I would like to see some solid evidence that this measure wouldn't hit the state's general fund like the analysis suggests could happen. On the other hand, I have no problem targeting the largest corporate leeches in the state like Nike or Kroger. Even if that whopping 3% tax drives them out of the state (unlikely given the business they would lose) that just means more opportunities for smaller, local businesses. Remember Phil Knight of Nike thought nothing about throwing away MILLIONS of dollars of his own money trying to influence the last governor's race for losing candidates. Millions he somehow "earned' paying sweat shop wages to workers overseas just to turn around and sell their products at inflated prices due to brand recognition/status. Remember Kroger is actively threatening many of our local grocery stores with their attempted merger, just so the new mega-corp can maximize their revenues in a less competitive market. They can afford it, and if they choose not to, we as Oregonians can do better without them.
Is it just me or does this seems like a loop hole to provide a “stimulus” check which will just cause more inflation in our state. Just because a corporation is charged more in taxes doesn’t keep them from passing the cost onto the consumer. It’s a NO for me
My concern is that if it passes and some of the bigger multi-million dollar companies decide they can just move out of Oregon, would Oregon State still be left required to find a way to pay out for this rebate?
