I love how the no lady said large businesses pay their fair share in taxes by hiring employees....... ummm, they are literally firing employees and trying to get machines to do the job or make us do it ourselves (self checkout) and have been price gouging for years. Blaming covid and still refusing to lower prices after the pandemic. One thing is sure prices will continue to rise no matter what so might as well get paid just to pay the incease.
The other thing is these data centers, which contain 50,000 to 100,000 servers (per data center) only require a shift of two techs per 8-10 hour shift, so not many people work in that space that receives tremendous tax breaks. Meanwhile, our electricity bills are skyrocketing bc of the tremendous drain on the power grid. Let’s get our rebate if you will. Basically this money we would get would reduce their tax breaks, are you okay with that?
@MW97058 Oregon Measure 118 is being criticized by everyone, its not goi g to pass, it has very ambiguous language that is left for interpretation, enforcement challenges that will be difficult to do, and set up forunintended consequences, such as impacting small businesses and increasing taxes on certain items. It MAY benefit lower income families of 5 or more kids but everyone else will be paying increased rates on goods and services.
@jollysteffen Really? Small businesses will be hit hard and they have a more difficult time absorbing those hits. Seriously a bad idea. If large buisnesses are taxed it will be passed onto smaller businesses and the consumer. When a business buys materials, machinery, advertises, leases equipment from a large business, the tax is applied and felt hard, especially in our economy here in Oregon. Businesses WILL FEEL THE TAX X3. , It is estimated the tax hit will increase cost around 15 percent or more. So large buisness will be hit, but they'll not feel it as they'll pass it down and small buisnesses and we will. Like I said, this is a poorly written measure. The concept is great, the methodology and proposed application is ill planned and horrible.
Because their members own businesses and afraid of being taxes more. The truth is only 4% of all businesses will incur the proposed increase on a current tax.
Is the rebate taxable income? Would individuals have to pay additional tax on the revenue they receive? Up to $1600 a year, taxed, seems like a poor return for the average person, with a host of issues stemming from the measure.
I voted No on 118. I am encouraged though that conversations are being had on how the way we tax has unintended consequences. We need taxes, we need to fund our infrastructure and services we all enjoy as Oregonians, BUT we need to do it in a way that encourages flourishing while also being able to fund the services and infrastructure taxes afford us. 118 was a wild idea, to put it mildly, and crossed a line for which taxes are not designed to do; redistribute wealth. I think removing income tax and installing a flat sales tax is what we need to do in Oregon. This puts all of Oregonian’s hard earned money in their pockets and will actually make sure everyone pays their fair share. My family earns enough to get by (thank God) and we aim to be wise with our finances, we don’t spend a lot on “things”, but I know the wealthy do, and they will pay more on sales than my family would, simply because they can afford it. This also encourages each individual and family to keep pushing for the promotion and the overtime (when needed), without being penalized for their work ethic through income tax.
Um, what you are trying to support then, is an extra tax on the poorest of us. You admit yourself, that your 'family is doing well...' When we are taxed on sales instead of income, then the persons earning $100K per year - say - will pay the same amount for goods as they who only make $20K. How can that sound at all "fair!" it is rather, putting an extra burden on the poorest, like wealth shifting or something? I can only hope that OREGON never falls for this. PPL can "push" all they want for better 'pay,' but there are certain barriers already built in, that make such an near impossibility, things like sex & race, eg. No way i will EVER support a sales tax! But hey, you can move to WA for awhile & see how great that works, oh & they are constantly raising it, without even having to ask - we the People - with an Initiative on a ballot - even. To be clear: Flat sales tax places a much heavier burden on those who make less, til well, maybe they take a 2nd or 3rd job - to catch up to the higher income earners from just say - 1 job??
Clearly this coverage was slanted in opposition of 118; from the opening graphics on. As someone who works in Eligibility it is extremely easy for us to determine how much any extra income costs a recipient in benefits when income is adjusted. Also 200 new DoR jobs would be great for those Oregonians! In the opposition's restaurant example, these owners could by their food from local growers and buy their supplies from local providers instead of huge corporations again keeping dollars in Oregon. In her example of grocery stores that are "just barely making it" this tax would not apply to them because they aren't generating 25 million dollars in revenue, This applies to the corporations that are taking advantage of us and prioritizing their shareholders. Every time we talk about taxing corporations, they try to scare us with talk of passing costs along. Maybe they could pay their shareholders a little bit less instead of passing those costs along. YES ON 118!
This is all true. However, local grocery stores don’t spin up overnight. I would like to see a different version of this initiative with text that more explicitly states that the rebate comes from only the extra 3% charged and excludes certain types of companies. Such as companies that have thin margins without creative accounting that have their primary headquarters in Oregon. And a disqualification from exemption for 10 years should the company participate in a stock buy back. Additionally, it needs to be optional to receive so people who rely on staying super poor to get federal benefits that are worth more than their $1 raise could choose to take it or to bank it for their income tax next year. Heck they could even provide an option to donate yours to the OLB so they can afford to prosecute wage theft. Right now it sadly seems that the policy isn’t super clear and I don’t really trust the legislature to fix it. Given the job they did with 110 for the last few years. Whoever decided that “create more inpatient rehab beds” could me pay private companies for their existing beds should be ashamed of themselves. Speed at ending the rehab bed shortage was key to 110 working. But they didn’t and look at the backlash we ended up with.
Agreed! The opposition doesn't even acknowledge that in Deschutes county alone this measure will bring in over $333,000,000. That new revenue will help small business and individuals every year. For them to say that it will take away benefits is so disingenuous. This is additional tax on giant corporations. It will pay for itself adding new jobs and help every day Oregonians. Are they insinuating that they are the only ones who can create jobs? With more money in people's pockets more businesses can create more jobs. Those against this Measure either have something to lose or have been gaslit to believe it's bad for the state. Every study on a form of UBI has improved the lives and communities around them.
Its not a revenue tax, its a sales tax. It has nothing to do with revenue. A lot of businesses including small farms are valued over 25 million. Do you know how few acres a farm has to own to be valued over 25 million?
@@KCWhoa Thank you for the clarification. I misspoke when I used the word revenue. This is not a tax on the value of the farm, but its sales. According to OSU, In 2022 the average acres per farm in OR was 430 and the average sales per farm in OR was $190,485. As with all progressive taxes this is only an added tax on sales at $25 million and above. The first $24.999 million are taxed at the regular rate. YES ON 118!
@@levimote Why do you insist on lying to prove your point? If a company sells $25,000,000 of goods or services, the entire 25,000,000 receives an additional tax of 3%. Thats nearly a million dollars that could be wage increases or reinvestment which creates more jobs. Regardless, we always absorb the cost and when so many industries support eachother, we could be absorbing as much as 12% on our end. Fuel will be forced to increase 6 to 9% immediately. Hospitals will be forced to increase cost by 12%. Grocery stores 9%. Retailers 9%. This would apply to most goods and services. that $1600 wont make up for the thousands you'll spend extra throughout the year. Medical insurance will be forced to increase. Car insurance will be forced to increase. Theres no good that comes from this bill. The government is wasteful. I dont understand how you think you'll benefit from this.
Very good to see both sides of 118. Remember, when we received stimulus checks, that was federal govt. 118 is a State initiative; so, yes I am guessing that the yearly check will be taxable, the amount of said check can be revised amended etc. No on 118 Bob
After the prices on products are raised by this bill you will feel like you received nothing. If we keep taxing each and everything prices will keep rising. This screws everybody.
I know few people have promised me lots of things. When i was in China, chairman Mao promised me that if we all helped him to overthrow the national party, he would give us everything, free housing, free medical care , free clothing, free food and ¥36 a month for everyone without working . Then it was Jimmy Carter in 1976, if I voted for him, he would give me $200 rebate. But he lied. Then it was Andrew Yang 2020, he Wants To Give me $1,000 a month every month as universal income if I vote for him .
Voted Yes. It's not a perfect bill, but Corporations are at record high profits, and record low taxes. In America's most economically prosperous time we taxed corporations up to 58%, back in 1968. In 2024 its can reach up to 21%. Keep in mind what a marginal tax is, and how not every company is paying that with other loop holes. It's boring but the money is not circulating to everyone, it's pooling at the top more and more every year.
This is not the solution… I agree Corporations should pay more in taxes but this is a horrible bill. It will prevent companies from coming here and force some to leave. Oregon needs to be more pro business so there are good jobs here. Also the 58% tax rate was a progressive tax it was only 58% tax on a very small portion of income not all of it… please people do not vote yes this will destroy our economy…
It wasnt properous. It was designed at that time to force growth because the economy at the time needed it to survive. They paid almost no tax though. Do you know why?? Because they were forced to reinvest or be taxed and they chose to reinvest leading to the business growing. This is not the same. This is a tax on sales wether the company profits or not. This means they'll be forced to charge more or pay you less to survive. you are conflating income and sales. theyre not the same. Theyre using this $1600 to fool you into think you're benefiting from it. Its $133 a month. That wont help anyone. It wont even make up for the additional cost or loss of income it'll cause.
New York City did something similar with the owners of apartments. All they did was raise the rent. To make up for the tax increase. In the end, it'll come back to us.
@@ericdeblauw2913 Incentivizing people to shop local. Seems fine to me. Reminds me of CA's fast food minimum wage increase, it was said it would all get passed to the consumer but to keep prices competitive they only went up a slight amount. Record profits aren't going to be donated, just hoarded.
What small business is making 25 million a year? Small business is like 1 mill to maybe 5 on the high end. Give me the $1600 and I'll spend it all on small business screw the big corporations. I bet most of our local businesses would love to make 25 million a year.
I’m voting No even though I’m someone who would vote yes. It’s too lose, and what large company wants to invest here if they lose 3% before profit. On a more human end my rent will go up because families will want to live here. lol Our Rent Sucks already 😂😂💯
What a silly thing to comment. The $1,600 will be spent on products and energize the market instead of being airlifted out of the state and hoarded by people who are already rich. You're simping for corporations.
@@KLADDKAKA1985 it’s not silly, I am a paycheck to paycheck person, I just work in a warehouse. I just think 118 was just thrown together and not thought through. Do your research before you give an opinion, I did.
Yeah, sorry for calling your comment silly. That was a bit much. It's not a perfect bill, but we desperately need more public funding and I'm sick of the tax burden falling fully on us. 3% isn't a whole lot unless you're Walmart, target or Fred Meyer, and they'll gouge us either way as we've seen the last year. I wouldn't mind if all $1600 was shifted to public housing and healthcare projects, but we need to elect good labor focused politicians for that. I don't think making Oregon less attractive to people is a good way to solve the housing crisis
@@KLADDKAKA1985 right on! I think we ultimately agree. I get why you would say that my comment is silly though. I believe in growing our community from the ground up, not trickle down economics, tax breaks for the wealthiest has never made anyone but the rich better off. So I do believe in the concept of measure 118, I just think it was quickly put together and it should be worked through more before we just say yes and hope our state is able to implement it properly.
@@dingdang3845 That's true. It sucks that it might take money out of the general fund and give $1600 to people that don't need it. A brighter future is bigger than individual ballot measures :)
Notice, not all Oregon residents are US citizens. All Oregon residents, it only takes 30 days to be a resident in Oregon. So, how many people do we want in Oregon?
This will result in massive increases in everyday goods due to the tax being present at multiple stages of the production processes. Food prices are expected to rise 11 percent if this passes.
People should vote for this as I believe it’s fair. I don’t think most people have any clue the amount of huge corporations in Oregon. Meta, LinkedIn, Google, Amazon….on and on.
You're clueless and mentally ill.. you will pay more in taxes than you will receive for nothing... taxing people into prosperity doesn't work dingbat...
Averages out to about 130 a month per person. For a single person, it's enough to knock you out of qualifying for services by pushing your income over the limit. I dont buy that someone came up with this plan out of the goodness of their hearts.
Small businesses might be indirectly affected by this but they wouldn't be paying the tax directly. An example of a business that might be adversely affected would be REI. They have 8 stores in Oregon yet last year they operated in the red. This would be a huge tax on a business that had a net loss. The idea is good...the execution is bad. Why Sales vs Profit? Somebody failed accounting 101.
I'm from Portland and I'm not voting for it. I'm also telling others not to vote for it. It is supported and financed by Californians so that is enough for me to know. It is a tax on "sales" ie a sales tax passed on to us, not a tax on the companies income. Let's talk to people all over the state t5vite against it. And it seems like we will have to pay taxes on it!!
Government has caused inflation by not regulating corporate greed. Stock buybacks and consolidation of industries has caused inflation and the government should limit these activities through legislation. Measure 118 uses one of the few powers the people have to control corporate greed by taxing sales on large corporations doing business in OR and putting that money back in the hands of the people. Even 1,000 new government jobs would not undo the financial benefits gained for a majority of Oregonians. Not to mention that a good paying job with benefits and pensions is something we should never begrudge our neighbors.

US Bank is about to leave. Ted Wheeler just announced they need to do 5 percent budget cut. Tina Kotek just bought farm land regardless of your opinion. It will get amended. But for those of us who don't live in Portland, but have been paying taxes to support Portland. This could be our due. However, the measure will raise the cost across the board. I would prefer lowering state taxes and let portland take care of itself
Cities are usually provide a disproportionate amount of tax revenue compared to suburbs and rural areas. In other words, net tax revenue flows out of cities and into the low-use infrastructure that maintains lower population-density areas. Look up the organization "Strong Towns" to find some nice graphics and data showing this. Of course, Portland is only one of a number of cities in Oregon, but I'm guessing it still does provide a disproportionate amount of tax revenue compared to the rest of the state (including rural and suburban areas).

Since when have companies ever passed a tax cut onto consumers in the form of lower prices. Oregon cut the corporate tax back in 2019 and haven’t raised it since. And yet all I see are price increases from there. It’s the same old story. How thin do you think the margins on the taxible income above 25M are for these companies? Because it is only 3% additional tax on the 25th million dollar and up. Everything below that gets taxed at 7.6% as usual. Which is lower than someone making only $20,400.00 a year. But here you are arguing “won’t someone think of the corporations and how they are just struggling to get by”

The reason most people in Oregon can’t cover their costs is because of massive regulation and anti-business sentiment. Also ridiculous building restrictions. How about making it easier so people can actually build homes?
The reason is because of private equity firms buying up single family homes which has caused the cost of real estate to skyrocket. With rates increasing, prices are FINALLY starting to come down-but way too slowly due to industry propping up home values!

When we are taxed on sales instead of income, then the persons earning $100K per year - say - will pay the same amount for goods as they who only make $20K.

It's boring but the money is not circulating to everyone, it's pooling at the top more and more every year.
thy pass the tax tho to you
This is not the solution… I agree Corporations should pay more in taxes but this is a horrible bill.

Yeah, sorry for calling your comment silly. That was a bit much. Lost my vote when they said it would need 199 new government jobs. Government caused inflation and should be losing jobs not gaining jobs.
Stop funding the postal workers!
Cities are usually provide a disproportionate amount of tax revenue compared to suburbs and rural areas. In other words, net tax revenue flows out of cities and into the low-use infrastructure that maintains lower population-density areas.
