Colouring and texturing, are both on the "get to do in the near future" list, thanks for the demonstration Sam, very helpful and thought provoking. Take care Mike
I'm new to turning; but having held these two pieces in my hands one can only admire the artfulness (is that a word?) and detail in these pieces - Sam thanks for all the work and time you do to ensure we new guys learn and have ideas to increase our skills.
Sam, I love that you are so "real", mess-ups and all. I always enjoy, and am often inspired by your work. Keep turning and be safe...I had a nearly finished bowl come off my lathe the other day, thankfully in the opposite direction of my head.
Wow, thanks, Sam, there are some great inspiring ideas there. I've been putting off buying a texturing tool (I seem to buy tools before I've used the one's I've got!) This is a great idea to get into the art of texturing and thinking about what you're doing and making it individual rather than just buying the tool that will make every bowl look like everyone else's bowl!
my turning instructor just brought in his beading tools for me to play with, WOW they are awesome. didn't work too well on my practice poplar bowl so when I tried them on the maple...most excellent tool! what a difference it made to the bowl. another great video, I am so inspired and looking forward to doing some painting and texturing on rim soon.
I really enjoyed this video and the ideas you have given me. Thanks to your video on the Robert Sorby small texturing and spiralling tool I bought one a few months ago. Yesterday I spent half an hour practising with it on a paste of waste wood and today I decorated the inside of a box lid with it. Sure impresses my friends! I have bought some acrylic colouring recently so that's my next step. When I did my turners' beginners' course about 18 months ago I never dreamt I would get so far as texturing or colouring but it is immensely satisfying. Many thanks, Alan.
Alan, I keep telling people that things are not that difficult. There is always a learning curve.....but I think the hard part is just to try. I usually fail a little here and there. Thanks. Sam
I stumbled upon this video and loved it! Really creative ways to put the final touches on a piece. I was surprised at how simple these techniques are, but the end results are fabulous! Thanks for sharing Sam.
Zac Nick Agar is the master. Visit his web page. He does amazing wall hangings. See if you can friend him also on FB. He is worth following He also has a video on texturing tools put out by Robert Sorby. here is the link ua-cam.com/video/qEIbEQyTnrQ/v-deo.html Sam
I finally got around to watching this. Thanks for the ideas and tips! I will have to try and do some of this soon. I also thought about carving the outside of goblets and cups but that will take a bit more practice and time to get it just right. Thanks again, Brett
Your coloring on the bowls are just spectacular! I want to get a lathe at some point since I have a giant branch sitting in my garage that I've been wanting to do something with.
man, this video was suggested from another video and I clicked on it because the color scheme on the image was AWESOME! You've got a good eye for design brotha keep up the good work:)
Hell I dig the coloring, purple and pink are complimenting for each other.awesome, cool idea using the lacing maker(leather tool, I do leather work as well) Have you ever tried butcher block sealer for a coating? and then just plain carnuba or paraffin wax over the top on the inside thanks for sharing. =)
Simply amazing.Hopefully I get the capital to start off my own shop someday.. How much do you reckon should start one up with just enough tools? Thanks
Well, it depends on what you want to do. What kind of stuff you want to make or turn. I think you can start with sone hand tools certainly and build your shop. Power machines are great but working with hand tools is slow, quiet and it gives you time to think about what you are doing. I started woodworking 40 years ago with a block plane and a hand saw. I made it work somehow. Thanks for writing and for the kind words. Sam in Wyoming
Jim The gentleman I mentioned later in the video relating to airbrushing was David Nittmann. David was a wood turner who lived in Colorado. Unfortunately David passed away in August 2014 from cancer. This link should take you to some of his work www.google.com/search?q=david+nittmann+woodturner&newwindow=1&hl=en&biw=1440&bih=712&site=webhp&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=6Q_7VIbsBsmWgwTN14JQ&ved=0CFUQsAQ Thanks Sam
Hi Sam - great teaching video - thanks! Question == have you ever applied colouring a wet turned bowl or vase? What happened? Thanks Dennis Beamish Cambridge Ontario Canada
Dennis. Should that read? "coloring TO a wet turned bowl" I think a word was omitted. Anyway. I have never applied color to a bowl that was still wet. Sam
Sam - your assumption was correct - my apologies for the bad communication. Appreciate your answer. I may give it a try and if I do - I will send you a note and tell you what the results were. If I try - I will send a picture of the good - or the bad, just for some reference. Thanks again - love your videos, you are a great teacher to us amateurs! Dennis
If you get a smaller tip torch, like the vector nitro, and it works good with the large on. I use mine with the lathe on and it creates such an even burn. It's real clean, try it out
Dwight, good question. I generally seal w piece with shellac. And perhaps sand it back a bit. This way I am applying paint to a surface that is not totally porous as wood usually is. (But I am not sure if I did that in this old video). If i have done any other embellishment I would mask that area off. I would then apply paint with my airbrush. I would also seal the painted area with a spray of your choice. I don't think a real shiny surface is appropriate here. Sam
Ginger Thanks very much. This bowl is really more decorative. It is finished with lacquer. You could use it for dry foods, maybe peanuts or something. Sam
Jurgis Gurevicius I have not watched this video in a while. Do I have a problem with a bowl that is not stable? It is always a tradeoff between appearance and function. For art pieces, the base needs to be smaller-for a salad bowl the base should be larger. Thanks Sam
I would love to use colour but I'm very colourblind so everything would end up looking terrible. Only for my wife's advice I would end up leaving the house dressed like Coco the clown every day.
woodturning has been my new YT binge. so satisfying to watch!
Will
I know what you are talking about. One of my favorites is watching pottery being made. Very much like Woodturning. Thanks for watching Sam
WYOMINGWOODTURNER funny you mention pottery. after I showed my wife woodturning videos, she said I should check out pottery next.
Good morning Sam. Can't believe I haven't seen this until now. What a information and technique packed video. Thanks for sharing. Fred
Fred
I went over 200 videos a while back. I can't remember half of them. So I have lots of good ones (I hope) hidden in the pile.
Thanks Sam

Those 'spirit stains' by Chestnut are supposed to be very good.
baconsoda Thanks Brendan, they also do a trial pack, which maybe a good idea, to get to know how to best use them. Thanks for that mate.
baconsoda I have used a little of the Spirit Stains. They are good.
Sam
Mike Waldt I saw 2 trial packs, one was more geared towards furniture restoration type colouring I think. They both looked like good value.

I only mess up......ALWAYS! I do think it is good to include what can happen, and stuff happens to us all.
Sam
Agreed!

Aosoth That is more than enough reason to get a lathe. Sam
Sam, thanks for sharing. Great video as always!
A lot of interesting ideas and well explained.

Thanks very much. I have worked with color a lot over the years and still have difficulty. But I think this one has a good combination.

Fun video, with lots of idea starters!!!
What a delight! It is interesting how so much can be done so readily.
Joseph, Of course I edit out a lot of footage. I tend to fuss a lot with coloring and texturing and do spend lots of times. Thanks for watching. Sam
that came out so nice
Thanks Pete
A lot of different and interesting ideas.

Nice egg there Buddy. you did a better job then I could do... Cheers Desmond.
Thanks Desmond
Great Video Sam, I have a Dick Blick close to my house and I am heading there today!
+Erik Anderson
I never thought about Dick Blick having a real store. I am 3 hours away from a Hobby Lobby . But I spend too much money there. haha Sam
Gracias por compartir, muy explicativo en el video el diseño.
Pedro
Gracias
Man, you are good!
It looks nice very very interested
Thanks
Sam
very interesting creative work

It is always fun to do these types of wood turnings. And I am still learning.
Sam
At what point would you do the air brush application of paint....after what , before what?....
Dwight, good question. I generally seal w piece with shellac. And perhaps sand it back a bit. This way I am applying paint to a surface that is not totally porous as wood usually is. I like that bowl that is funky is theses bowl use for food
Ginger
Thanks very much. This bowl is really more decorative. It is finished with lacquer. You could use it for dry foods, maybe peanuts or something. Sam
Nice!!
I recommend you to widen the bottom, so your bowls would be more stable.

Nice to know there are other turners in Wyoming. Can I ask where you are located?
