When he recorded the tracks he wasn't even scheduled to sing that day but got asked to lay his vocals. An old man once told me a story of his father. His father was a German pilot in WWI. He had been struck in the engine earlier in the day on the 24th of December 1914. He never made it across the lines, and planted his "Crate" in no-man's land. By the time he had his wits about him and was ready to make a run for it, the guns on the front fell silent. Deafening silence. Finally pierced by a single man in song.
David Draiman is musically trained. In an interview he explained that he went into a booth and recorded the lyrics for this video for 3 hours, doing different things with it. Then this masterpiece was created. Is a thing of beauty.
An anthem for today's world. Listen to it using the filter of these interpretations: Darkness = Oppression. Silence = Apathy. Music = Action for Justice. Seeds = Ideas for change. Neon = artificial. Subway walls = The worker class. Tenement Halls = The poor. Disturbed's interpretation is absolutely the perfect arrangement to feature the message of the song. And silence is deafening to the ears. After Katrina, parts of New Orleans were so silent that it actually hurt a person's ears. No dogs, no air conditioner white noise, no running cars, no tv or radio blaring, no music, no noise at all. A very physically painful experience.
I love what you wrote. I would not be able to come up with something so Well thought out Descriptive and intelligent. I just think it's beautiful what you wrote

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel sing this song. I loved the words, but never liked the song. I felt that the words were powerful, but they were delivered to us in a very passive way. It felt very wrong to me. This was an angry song, why were they so gentle about it?!?! When I found this cover about 6 months ago, I fell in love with the song in its entirety. David gave this song exactly what it needed...RAGE! "Damnit people, you didn't listen to S&G when they warned you. Now I'm pissed and I'm going to MAKE you listen."
Exactly!!!! I never really liked the S&G version but this version makes you listen to the words! It was so moving that I listened to the song for days, and started listening to their other songs. I never realized how great a songwriter Paul Simon is until now. To write a song decade's ago that still rings true today is amazing! I can't really fault the way S&G sang it back then because they were hippies and were into peace symbols and flower children. David's rendition is perfect for today and it's amazing how many generations of people are enjoying it! 20 to 90 year olds. He has an incredible voice and I wish he would do more ballads (for lack of a better word).

So true! But David actually went from bass, to baritone, then to tenor. And he jumped up a full octave so naturally and with such ease! I'm just amazed. What a talent! But the REAL talent is his ability to connect emotionally. That can't be taught. Couldn't agree with you more, and much love to David for this song! Shalom Shalom!
Must say that getting the reaction to this song from a producer/musician was the best I’ve seen here…you gave insight on the visuals I’d never thought of…thank you for doing this…this song’s message is much more needed today than before…god bless.
Paul Simon wanted to meet David and when he did, he said to him: "This is your song now." Don't miss the live performance on the Conan show. It's nice to see the orchestra. And no, no auto tune was used even though David had a terrible cold that night.
Great review. The lyrics, written by Paul Simon, during the 1960"s assassination era. Were coloring the pain our Nation felt. Black, White, and head bowed Silence. Paul Simon is a lyrical genius and Disturbed updating to a new time and meaning, is also genius. It's spiritually assaulting and emotionally tearing music! Well done!
Best vocals ever! Love David. This interpretation of this classic is perfection! I still get chills and goosebumps and I’ve heard this version 100+ times! Check out his live version on Conan and know he was very sick at the time of this performance.
I just love this version of the song. It adds gravitas to message. David has such a powerful voice. Love your appreciation of it as well. Still here for the reggae though.😘
Another song of theirs you may enjoy is "Reason to Fight". It's very different from Disturbed's regular offerings, but has great meaning behind it. Thank you for this reaction video.
Your review was very detailed and had more interesting aspects, some of which I thought of myself and others didn't. You made a lot of good points. Your "intro and outro" words made me think of how I speak when I talk to others. Thank you for doing this reaction video. I am 78 and I thought it was a super video and have watched it probably 50 times by now.
I watch for this every time I watch a new-to-me reaction - about 1 or 2 bars in, the reactors eyes open wide. No one expects this from a metal singer. It's just wonderful.
I love love love your reaction this song took my breath away first time I heard it I couldn't quit playing it it just does something to you I apologize for no punctuation just throw some in where you think they need to be LOL you were actually very complimentary of the song and of the singer. I listen to these reaction people and they want a critique and down size you're a beautiful person for the comments you made. And I agree, why hadn't I heard this sooner. Have a blessed night.
You loved this so much, but I checked and couldn't find you checking any other songs. That's a shame, they're fabulous. If you just can't handle heavy metal, listen to The Light or A Reason To Fight. I'm a 70 y o grandma and I love all of their music, heavy metal included. The band is composed of marvelous musicians, the perfect blend with David's beautiful voice. Listen to the words of their songs, which can actually be heard and understand. As you can tell, I am a huge fan. The band has helped so many people struggling with addiction and depression. They care. Beautiful human beings, fabulous musicians. As someone who has struggled with deep depression, I can say they recently saved me.
Danke
An original by Disturbed that is a beautiful song what gives you hope is "Hold on to Memories. I prefer the official live video, but both are great and something they do at every concert and their fans love it. David is ranked in the top 100 vocalist of all time.
You are the first reactor to this song that has understood that silence has a sound. Bravo. You’re also one of the few that understand the increasing anger that David displays as the song progresses. Thank you.
What I love most is the way the song just keeps building and building never giving you a chance to catch breath. Touches the soul with the anger it needs.
I never get tired of watching this song or reactions to it. Every single time the final verse starts, all the muscles in my core and jaw clench. My heart hurts when the drums boom. Honestly I would have the same (literally) visceral feelings just watching it all, but especially David's face, with the sound turned completely off. Very nice reaction/interpretation. Check out Wooden Ships by Crosby Stills and Nash. OMG David would crush that into the ground too!
I've watched reactions from a lot of different people and I never get tired of this version of Sound of Silence. It IS magnificent! I also wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction... you had me at "sshhhh". I found myself smiling through most of it. Good job!
Disturbed has amazing vocals and musical talent. Try listening to Down With the Sickness, The Light, A Reason to Fight, Through the Fire, and Hold on to Memories. They also perform an amazing version of Sting's If I Ever Lose my Faith in You.

@@GlassesKingdom I watched this again, and your interpretation gives me chills. It truly is a perfect song. Everything you said is exactly how I feel inside. I can’t remember when a song has moved me so much.

I've lost count of how many times I've watched reactions and this is one of the best reactions I've seen period but especially from a musician or expert. I'm so happy he took the time to know the lyrics before hand. This was great, definitely subscribing
Wow, your words description was on point from the music sound & meaning to the video images. It’s too bad people have a lot to say & yet they keep silent when they are too afraid to defend themselves & other people around them. Every time I listen to this music it doesn’t take me long to get goosebumps. I loved your reaction❗️
Yes def the loudest silence is that of partners both being silent the silence speaks volumes....this is a dark version of this song yet it feels calming and the dark clouds feel like serenity to me...I really really loved this version of the song and if u chose it or it was recommended or requested it was indeed a great choice for a reaction especially for someone like u...I’m certain the clouds told a story to you 💯💯...thank u for this 🙌

I've stumbled upon your channel. Didn't expect to learn a lot from you just by analyzing the song.. And the way you explained the presentation at the end, as a musician myself, that is one of the most beautiful tips someone has given..
I watched this reaction strictly because I love when I get the reaction you just gave. For that reason. I'm now a follower. Fantastic and on the money reaction 👌 thank you 😊
I like the Conan rendition as well, but the video on this one gets me every time. Notice the end of the video. Music sheets on one side and the boat full of instruments going to join them. Without each other you have silence. Such a powerful song and David is such a powerful singer. Classically trained, beautiful voice. Listen to some of his metal too, like Down with the Sickness, different side of David and his group (the guy with the guitar and the guy with the big drum) but just as wonderful as they are in this song.
The singer actually belted that out in one day and was high on marijuana and didn't know he wasn't doing lyrics that day.....that's real emotion...I'm sure they thought about the video...but the lyrics were recorded in 2 or 3 takes.....at least David Draimon said so himself
This song was famous 50 years ago, by Simon and Garfunkel. Paul Simon wrote it. I believe David Draiman and Disturbed wanted to respect the original song as well as put their own spin on it. The writer approved of this version.
In all fairness the song was written and originally performed by Simon & Garfunkel in the 60s. I grew up with them but OMG does David kill it here. He is an incredible vocalist who wanted to give the song it's proper justice and I believe Paul Simon said he certainly did.
When this song first came out by Simon and Garfunkel . They wrote it as a warning about how things have come with TV and music. People didn't take the warning and David draimen sang it in anger that people didn't take that warning and see what's going on now.
S&G did a good job on the lyrics, but Dosturbed to the level oh Holy Crap!!! David's voice makes it perfect! It starts calm and gets angrier and angrier, the way it should have been done back in 64...KUDOS TO DISTURBED FOR MAKING A PERFECT COVER OF THIS SONG!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
First time watching one of your videos and I must say I loved it! I thoroughly enjoyed to your interpretation and breakdown. It is always refreshing to hear someone who really gets the importance of music.
When this song came out in 1964 written by Paul Simon, that's all he had was a acoustic guitar, and I have loved it ever since ,but this remake brings it to a whole new generation and it is great!!!!
To add to other comments you may learn more about the meaning of this song by listening to Simon and Garfunkel’s version of this song (as Simon wrote it) and then listen again to this. As many have said the original was a warning. This version shows the result of ignoring that warning. Little did Simon know how prophetic his song would become in today’s world of technology.
Paul Simon heard David draimen sing sound of silence. It brought tears to his eyes and he said David was meant to sing that song. If you look up sound of silence in Wikipedia you'll see Paul Simons explanation of the opening line. Anton Chekhov says the role of the artist is to ask questions not to answer them. So regardless of What Paul says is the meaning of the opening line The true meaning is that which is true to the listener. David was raised as an orthodox Jew and went to school to become a cantor. A canta sings back everything the rabbi has just red from the torah. Cantors have very deep Melodic voices and can sustain low notes for a period of time. Their cover of Strong's If I ever lose my faith in you Is really good
When he recorded the tracks he wasn't even scheduled to sing that day but got asked to lay his vocals. When he heard it all mixed he couldn't even look at his band members or anyone as he was tearing up and didnt want his friends to see him that emotional. Says something if a singer that good could make himself cry listening to his song.
You haven't heard nothing , yet. ! Just listen on 🎉
Simon and Garfunkel warned of it on their song a long time ago. David is now emphasizing on it with a bang!!!!! We should listen to it.

Paul Simon is a lyrical genius and Disturbed updating to a new time and meaning, is also genius. It's spiritually assaulting and emotionally tearing music! Well done!
Flawless victory! I love Disturbed.
Best vocals ever! Love David. This interpretation of this classic is perfection! I still get chills and goosebumps and I’ve heard this version 100+ times! Check out his live version on Conan and know he was very sick at the time of this performance.
I’ve seen many reactions to this beautiful cover, yours is really extraordinary and brilliant 👏👏
Wow, thank you! I'm thrilled to hear that
Davids heavenly voice took this song to the cosmos
I just love this version of the song. It adds gravitas to message. David has such a powerful voice. Love your appreciation of it as well. Still here for the reggae though.😘
lol , ok i will give you lots of reggae
You’re right. He has intense eyes❣️
He ROARS - like a LION!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Lori - Iowa
Danke
Your review was SPLENDID! Brava Brava BRAVA! IM A Subscriber to you! David Draimen FOREVER!!!!!....your brilliant 👏!!!
Wow, thank you!
I loved your passion and interpretation sir! Draiman is an awesome, classically trained vocalist. "...And the people bowed and prayed"... 🙏✌
Best reaction to this great song!!
Excellent reaction! I loved hearing your view!
I really, really, really, really, really, reeeaaaallllyyy, really, really loved this reaction. I’ve always loved Disturbed and this song is so different from their normal music. Anyway ty ty ty…great reaction! React to Disturbed or anything else…we will watch it! ❤️
Oh gosh me too... I love watching them be awed
Loved your breakdown
This may well be the best cover ever! Really amazing!
Awesome review, thank you. This song as done by Draiman always brings tears to my eyes.
Can I just say that I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, loved your review of this out of this world version of The Sound Of Silence.
Great review of the song and I love your interpretation. How he sung it is meant to portray the message that is written.
Love your interpretation! And I know exactly what you mean about “silence”. Sometimes, silence can be deafening. This is the most beautiful, powerful cover I’ve ever heard. I cried the first time I heard it. I was speechless.
Well said!
@@GlassesKingdom I watched this again, and your interpretation gives me chills. It truly is a perfect song. Everything you said is exactly how I feel inside. I can’t remember when a song has moved me so much.
When a song such as this is repeatedly interrupted it loses the power it has
Watch the original, the power is there , if I don’t interrupt UA-cam consider it reposting someone’s content, it’s against the guidelines, so if you want no interruptions you know where to find the original
🎉The best reaction I've seen and heard 'till now
Excellent!!
I've lost count of how many times I've watched reactions and this is one of the best reactions I've seen period but especially from a musician or expert. I'm so happy he took the time to know the lyrics before hand. This was great, definitely subscribing
Thank you 😊 I appreciate your participation and good thoughts
Brilliant reaction!!!
Yes def the loudest silence is that of partners both being silent the silence speaks volumes....this is a dark version of this song yet it feels calming and the dark clouds feel like serenity to me...I really really loved this version of the song and if u chose it or it was recommended or requested it was indeed a great choice for a reaction especially for someone like u...I’m certain the clouds told a story to you 💯💯...thank u for this 🙌
i choose this one... love it
Somehow I’m not surprised...I know I say it often but this really might be my favorite 🙌🙌💯💯🆙🆙🆙great great choice mi Rasta
Listen to the live version. Even more beautiful. I agree it should have received many awards. People are still talking about it. Many people are moved by it even today
Great reaction/interpretation. Rock on...
Just a masterpiece. Cried like a baby.
I've stumbled upon your channel. Didn't expect to learn a lot from you just by analyzing the song.. And the way you explained the presentation at the end, as a musician myself, that is one of the most beautiful tips someone has given..
I’m really happy I was helpful, I normally enjoy passing on any knowledge I have to whomever it will benefit. Blessings my friend
Yes, David Draiman is one of a kind!
Silence is also a sound.
Super good reaction really enjoyed it, thank you Sir.
Love this verson. This is now my favourite. He sing with so much feelings. Great choice GlassesKingdom.
You did nail the meaning the neon light was television but it now it still means social media after all these years..
I watched this reaction strictly because I love when I get the reaction you just gave. For that reason. I'm now a follower. Fantastic and on the money reaction 👌 thank you 😊
My pleasure always
I like the Conan rendition as well, but the video on this one gets me every time. Notice the end of the video. Music sheets on one side and the boat full of instruments going to join them. Without each other you have silence. Such a powerful song and David is such a powerful singer. Classically trained, beautiful voice. Listen to some of his metal too, like Down with the Sickness, different side of David and his group (the guy with the guitar and the guy with the big drum) but just as wonderful as they are in this song.
Beautiful acoustic guitar playing, my dear... 😘
This is my first time checking you out and your comments are right on point. This is the best cover I’ve ever heard. It’s truly beautiful!
Great reaction..Bonza.. one of the best.
thank you
Every time I hear it... It's been many times... I'm hit every time
The singer actually belted that out in one day and was high on marijuana and didn't know he wasn't doing lyrics that day.....that's real emotion...I'm sure they thought about the video...but the lyrics were recorded in 2 or 3 takes.....at least David Draimon said so himself
Loved your reaction...and your little jam section at the end!!
Beautiful commentary and such a meaningful deconstruction of the video
His voice is soothing. He would make an excellent country singer
The sound of silence is an emotion. It's a space there are no words for.
Yeah...David was really able to capture the lyrics..... That was almost more important than his amazing voice.
Their cover of Strong's If I ever lose my faith in you Is really good
Hauntingly Beautiful 💫
