Lost Boys, Predator, No Way Out, and Hoosiers are legitimately good films. But please, don't EVER call the majestic 'Aliens" a guilty pleasure. That is a film everyone loves and has no haters.

I like these lists. Ranking the 80s by different criteria I think really gives a more wholistic view of what to look in to.
Some of my “guilty pleasures” of the 80s include: Batman, Ghostbusters, Evil Dead 2, Beer, The Great Outdoors, Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon, and Ator.

Great picks, Dr. Matthews. Especially enjoyed seeing Return to Oz, Tucker: A Man & His Dream, The Funhouse, Near Dark, and Body Double. While watching your selections these 4 movies came to my mind as films that critics panned or sloughed off when originally released, but blew me away when I first saw them: The King of Comedy, After Hours (could be a double feature with Something Wild), The Thing, and Videodrome.

OK, your list is highly excellent by placing near dark on it. I would absolutely recommend your list to anybody that didn’t know what the 80s produced because these are almost all bangers for me too.

The Legend of Billie Jean is top of my list. Despite its pacing issues and TV movie aesthetics, it has some moments that are way beyond the sum of its parts. Its really one of a kind. Also, I'm 100% convinced that this film inspired Thema and Louise.

Terrific list! A lot of these are free on Tubi, so I will be checking them out soon! I love Aliens and Heathers, and like Predator, The Lost Boys and Beyond Thunderdome a lot.
Here are twelve other films I would consider worthy of mention (in chronological-ish order)!
    -
Call of the Wild: Howl, Buck (1981), directed by Kōzō Morishita - Call of the Wild was my favorite book in middle school. What an adaptation this is, despite the dated animation and ugly colors. Somehow it just captures the spirit of the book, condensed down to a brisk 85 minutes; the beauty and brutality is there and feels authentic, or maybe it's just my nostalgia for the story.
Videodrome (1983), directed by David Cronenberg - Probably his most acclaimed body horror masterpiece, but in terms of mainstream and critical appeal, it still lives in the shadow of The Fly. Does that make James Woods the guilty pleasure version of Jeff Goldbum?
National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), directed by Harold Ramis - As a teenager, this was the first VHS tape I owned that had boobs in it. I'm not a huge Chevy Chase fan, but he's a riot here. The script is full of howlers, plus I'm always in the mood for a funny Randy Quaid (pre-2000s) or John Candy cameo!
Top Secret! (1984), directed by Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker - The forgotten 80s Z/A/Z comedy, which I actually prefer to Airplane! Val Kilmer gives maybe a career best performance, he's naturally funny and charismatic here and excels at the physical comedy. It's a lot of fun.
Vampire Hunter D (1985), directed by Toyoo Ashida - It's pulp. It's 80s anime. It's a gothic horror western with a hero straight out of Castlevania. Obviously not a masterpiece, but it delivers on the thrills and entertainment in a quick 80 minutes.
Parting Glances (1986), directed by Bill Sherwood - Some might be put off by the controversial subject matter and low budget (which at times makes the film appear tacky), but a young Steve Buscemi charms in this magnificent little indie LGBT drama, set in Brooklyn during the AIDS crisis. It's a sad but cute film, and it has some laughs too. I expected a bittersweet ending, but the way writer/director/editor Bill Sherwood ends this film is surprisingly uplifting. RIP to him. He passed away from his own AIDS complications a few years after the film was released and is his only film.
Macskafogó (1986), directed by Béla Ternovszky - One zany animated Hungarian adult sci-fi black comedy spy parody with lots of energy, memorable character designs, bright colors, catchy songs and clever jokes (though some get lost in the translation). I had a blast!
The Brave Little Toaster (1987), directed by Jerry Rees - Either a kids version of Blade Runner or a darker, more traumatizing take on Toy Story. It's a cult favorite for a reason. It drew me in as a kid and still intrigues me to this day.
Spaceballs (1987), directed by Mel Brooks - I love (George Lucas) Star Wars. Mel Brooks is a genius. Rick Moranis is a comic legend. It's so juvenile, but I'll always have a soft spot for it.
They Live! (1988), directed by John Carpenter - Welcome to 1984 by George Orwell, jacked up on 4 years of steroids and starring wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper playing Duke Nukem, ready to fight as long as it takes to get Keith David to wear the darn sunglasses!
Twins (1988), directed by Ivan Reitman - Here's my Arnie pick. He's got great chemistry with Danny DeVito (as long as he's not pregnant and in another movie). They're both very likable and very funny here. The main visual gag gets overplayed a bit, but it's hard for me to resist a fun, mostly light-hearted buddy comedy movie with big stars from the late 80s.
Meet the Feebles (1989), directed Peter Jackson - The Lord of the Rings auteur conjures a delirious symphony of non-stop puppet/costume madness on crack. Explicitly not for kids! But it has some of the funniest and most quotable lines I've ever heard in a movie. This desperately needs a Criterion Blu-Ray release, the DVD looks below VHS quality.

I haven't seen most of these but one I have is "Something Wild" and I find it wild as the kids say that you consider it a guilty pleasure when it's a great film. I need an explanation to your definition of guilty pleasure because everyone defines it differently.

    • @miguel167589
      @miguel167589 2 місяці тому

I wrote this before seeing the number 1. I just come from a viewpoint where guilty pleasures are films you think are objectively bad, flawed, or what not and you still like. You say then that your definition is that of a movie you're not supposed to like but still do which is kind of the same but why aren't you supposed to like Aliens, one of the most widely loved movies of all time. Do you think it's badly made? Or where is the guilt come from?

    • @LearningaboutMovies
      @LearningaboutMovies  2 місяці тому

I think I said that a "guilty pleasure" was one where if I told people I loved it, most of them would think I'm stupid or tasteless. A "flawed" movie could be another definition. Like I said elsewhere, there are plenty of people who think naming Aliens a top movie is tasteless. You don't see it named on the BFI by hardly anybody, so by that standard, it should fit on this list.

I agree with your list almost in total for the ones I have seen, but now I have to watch River's Edge. If you do a 90's list my first 3 were from then so I won't include those. More people need to watch Near Dark. I think you can add Bill Paxton to the list of people who are always great he has been in so many great and fun films.
Jaws 3-D - I know objectively this movie is terrible, but I have always loved it and I think the whole concept of the theme park was great. It was only out done by Deep Blue Sea.
Inner Space - This movie needs more love just like Jaws 3-D. Has a great cast.
The Blob (1988) - This is a perfect movie, but no one has seen it until I show it to them.
Running Man - Really all Arnold movies can be on a list, but I could watch this over and over and over.
Fifth Element - I make no apologies for this one. It is flat out terrific and weird as hell.
The Highlander - The pacing is a bit slow, but you have Sean Connery, Clancy Brown and some truly epic so bad it's good Christopher Lambert.
    The Last Dragon - Sho'nuff
Moonraker - This is the most out of control and one of the best Roger Moore outings for just pure insanity.

I love this list! Nice collection of lesser known movies that seem to deserve watching. I'll definitely check out some that I haven't seen.
Aliens!! I love it too. Check Those Corners. Over to Infra red. 10mm explosive tip caseless light armour piercing round, why? We learned probably 75% of the outrageously corny now but also cool in a fun way dialogue, back in the day. We played the pen and paper roleplaying game! I was an aristorcrat military officer bullying my friend's characters. I used to slightly prefer Alien over this but when I recently re-watched that a few months ago I actually found the pacing a bit too slow. (I used to appreciate the slow paced buildup and had it as my "hungover wake up" film)
Btw have you seen Blood of Heroes / Salute of the Jugger? It was one of my favorite "cult post apocalyptic films" for a while. But I haven't seen it in a while now so might have a rewatch. Its got quirks and an unusual shape. I used to like it for its 'roleplaying game' creds, among other things. Maybbe not an objectivly great film. But I liked it.

I don't think Aliens would be considered a guilty pleasure as it's usually thought to be a great film. Guilty pleasures are bad movies that you love. Some of my pics: Superman III, Police Academy, European Vacation, Cannonball Run, Stardust Memories, Nightmare On Elm Street 3.

I liked "Frantic" too. Haven't heard anyone talk about it since it came out though.
Ditto on "Return to Oz." I liked it, can't understand all the hate for it.
"Outland," another fun one that people don't talk about as much as they should.
"Heathers" is terrific. I love the humor in this movie.
"Tucker" is another good one that has been utterly forgotten. I liked "Garden of Stone" too.
I like "Funhouse" too, up to when the "monster" takes the Frankenstein Mask off.
"Predator" is terrific. It starts as Rambo, turns into The Lost Patrol, and ends as The Most Dangerous Game. Love how it ends in silence.
"Hoosiers" is so good that I liked it even though I don't like basketball.
"Pretty in Pink" is my favorite John Hughes film, and I don't like the rest of his films.
"Near Dark" is a terrific "modern" vampire film.
"Something Wild" is fun. Can't understand why it has been so overlooked over the years.
I prefer "Aliens" to "Alien." It is terrific.

Thank you for an enjoyable list, but these are not guilty pleasures! River's Edge is a modern classic. I was sitting next to Keanu Reeves before he went onstage to introduce the film. That was a thrill in itself. The Return of Martin Guerre is definitely a classic. And so are Peter Greenaway's films (though I must confess I fell asleep at The Draughtsman's Contract, but it was a busy festival day). Finally, as a Russian, I should say that EVERY Russian has seen Kin-dza-dza. It's a neverending source of quotes and memes, especially poignant in these harrowing times.

You're hanging around with the wrong crowd if you feel sheepish admitting you like Aliens, The River's Edge, Body Double, Hoosiers, Heathers, and Pretty in Pink just for starters. My fave '80's "guilty pleasure" is Walter Hill's Streets of Fire from 1984 with Diane Lane and Willem Dafoe. I LOVE that movie while loving Kurosawa, Tarkovsky, and Kieslowski at the same time. So shoot me.
